Malaysia, ~USD 1,200, 180 degree hinge, Light, Good keyboard, Dota 2 - Many thanks!

    Posted: 12 Sep 2019 03:17 AM PDT

Thank you SO much guys, I really appreciate it!!

Total budget and country of purchase:

Malaysia. About USD 1,200 (RM 5,000) with some wiggle room.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Important: Would like hinges that can open the laptop to 180 degrees. This so can stand up against a wall, for better ergonomics (hopefully this is not bad habit). But, I don't actually expect to use a touch screen much.

Am one of those compulsive chargers, I don't expect to use the laptop far from power source often.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Extremely. 2nd computer for mobility, desktop at home.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows by far

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Minimum 12" probbaly

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Casual gaming, as below.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Dota 2 only. No specific targets, would much appreciate smoothness.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Compulsive tab opener. I (in/correctly?) assume 16GB RAM will help with that? Not sure if processor is important.

Am a writer, good keyboard is extremely important.

That said, for prolonged use, may occasionally try to stand the laptop (180 degrees, as above), and plug in a keyboard and mouse. So, do also appreciate USB-A ports.

SD card readers would help with space constraints.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Models I have been looking at:

    Acer Swift 3 and 5

    Lenovo Yoga 730

    Asus Zenbook Flip 13

    Thanks again!!

Was about to purchase an XPS 13 with 16gb of ram, then they stopped making any versions with more than 8gb. Suggestions for a similar sized, similar specced machine?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 10:04 AM PDT

    Hey r/suggestalaptop,

I was about to purchase (literally was trying to get the order fulfilled online) an Dell XPS 13 with 16gb of Ram then their sales rep told me they no longer many any XPS 13 (besides the 2-in-1) with more than 8gb anymore. I am (well, my company is) buying this to be an AutoCAD drafting station and I don't think 8GB will cut it.

I pop my laptop in my bag and go all the time, so I really want to keep things small. I currently use a top-level Surface Pro 4 that was great from a portability perspective, but is a bit underpowered for the work I do (it did get by, just not ideally.

The XPS 13 was PERFECT, except I need more RAM and can't get that anymore. Also the ram is soldered in and isn't upgradable. Is there another computer that would fit my requirements that's roughly the same size/weight as the XPS 13?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Money's not a huge deal; less is always better. I'd prefer around the $1,200 range but can go up to $2k if there is a good value to be had there. In the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No need for a 2 in 1. I need to be able to run AutoCAD Civil 3D and 3DS Max. i7, 16gb ram, and a decent video card preferred. I personally have no use for a touch screen, and hate how shiny they make screens, but it's technically not a deal breaker.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. Would like something about the size of the Surface or xps 13.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 pro

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, AutoDesk Civil3d, Autodesk 3DS Max

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? USB C or thunderbolt docking would be a big plus.

    Thanks!

Looking for a general purpose laptop

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 09:59 PM PDT

Right now I have an Acer Aspire E15 and I like it but a bug is in the screen. By this I mean the actual living creature died inside my laptop screen and it's stuck. I'm not in a big hurry to buy a new laptop but lately I've been looking at laptops. A couple caught my eye, the ASUS Vivobook F510UA and Acer Aspire 5 A514, but I hope I can get a little more direction from others in case I'm looking for the wrong things in a laptop.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** USA, $400-$600

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I like good battery life and at least a laptop that is a step up from my Acer Aspire E15 575 33BM

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not important

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.6 inches preferably, but smaller is okay

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Sometimes I make gifs on Photoshop, but not often, and sometimes I play Pokemon games on an emulator. I also make T-shirt designs using Gimp.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I currently like playing Pokemon Sage, and I'd rather it run smooth because it looks glitchy, like it's flashing and slow, but I'm not familiar with how it can play better...

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I do not want a touch screen, but since I make designs using Gimp I'd like the touchpad to be easy to use. I don't use a mouse when making designs so I like the touchpad to be sensitive enough for me to draw well. The other stuff doesn't matter much to me.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Since I graduated recently I've become a couch potato and right now I use my current laptop 90% of the time for watching TV shows. I usually have Firefox and Itunes open and spend my time browsing the internet. As I have misophonia, I really like to be able to quickly open itunes or youtube so I can block out sounds with music. I like good, loud audio and a good matte screen for watching shows.

[UK] Looking for a media laptop

    Posted: 12 Sep 2019 01:32 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      Budget: £300-£400
      Country: UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Best price/performance ratio with an eye towards durability.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Fairly important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
This is for a friend who probably doesn't much care, but as I'm the dedicated IT guy... Windows. It must be Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
The larger the better, but not overly picky.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Just watching TV and video calls.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Must be able to run Crysis at Super Max Ultra settings! J/K

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Build quality and reliability are the most important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This is for a friend in the UK, they just want something to watch TV on and that will last them a while. They aren't terribly fussy about things outside of durability and longevity. They are fine with 1080p for example. They would prefer something thin and lightweight with good battery life.

I am for the US, and am only really interested in enthusiast grade gear personally, as such I'm not really sure what's available on the opposite side of the spectrum in the UK. Four years ago you guys helped me pick out a wonderful gaming laptop that is still going strong today. Can you help me find something for my friend?

Which one should I buy - Acer vs HP

    Posted: 12 Sep 2019 01:10 AM PDT

Hi I'm currently trying to find a laptop that I can use for university and I've found two but I don't know which one to buy. I know they're not the best laptops but I'm on a very tight budget right now!

    Laptop 1 - https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-14-dk0599sa-14-amd-ryzen-3-laptop-128-gb-ssd-silver-10193335-pdt.html

    Laptop 2 - https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-3-a315-42-15-6-amd-ryzen-3-laptop-128-gb-ssd-black-10193932-pdt.html

The HP one seems to have better specs in terms of battery power and time, plus it has an SD port and is cheaper however I was worried bc HP has a history of over heating. I would be using the laptop for uni in terms of writing reports and stuff plus Netflix and watching shows. Really appreciate your help!

    Asus: Intel core I7 - 9750H. Gtx 1650 /w 4gb DDR6 VRAM, DDR4 16gb Memory, 512GB SSD, Windows 10 pro, 15.6" screen
    $1799.00

Macbook pro 2017: Core I5 7630U, 8GB memory, Intel iris plus 640 graphics, 128 GB SSD, mac OS high sierra, 13.3" screen
    $1597.00

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1900 AUD all up with a carry bag

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I want a reliable system for university work, and game development in Godot and unity. Also music composition, but not to a great extent

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I don't mind either way. A lightweight unit is nice but not essential.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I prefer either windows or mac OS, I enjoy both.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? As long as it is not less than 13"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Yes I will be gaming. I want to play titles I make in unity and godot, but also older titles as well such as minecraft, two worlds, dwarf fortress etc

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** At this stage I will be playing new AAA games on my desktop gaming pc, but when I play older titles I want decent performance, at least 60 fps

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I want a solid, comfortable unit that will be reliable for years to come that is resilient and can be knocked around in travel.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** -fill here, remove dashes- I really enjoy the nice user interface, aesthetics and touch pad of a mac unit, but I am reluctant to purchase one due to the small SSD size, and I am not familiar with the quality of their processors or graphics cards. My new laptop has to be tough as well due to the fact that I will be travelling with it five days a week.

Hard Cover Laptop Sleeve under $30

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 11:35 PM PDT

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a 15.6 inch hard laptop sleeve for under $35.

    I currently own a MSI P65 Creator whose dimensions are 357.7 x 247.7 x 17.9 mm ( 14.08 x 9.75 x 0.69 in ).

I am also looking for a case for my P65, however I have been unable to find any of those.

    Thanks for the help!

ASUS TUF FX505DT Gaming Laptop worth it?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 11:33 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I found this laptop that is $700 on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/R5-3550H-Processor-Graphics-FX505DT-AH51-Keyboard/dp/B07VBK4SYS/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

It looks really imo considering what I'm looking for as a incoming college freshmen who wants to do work, bring it around in my backpack, and do some decent gaming. It has a GTX 1650, 120 hz, 3.7 GZ processing speed, 8GB of ram, RGB keyboard, and is a little less than 5 pounds. This is pretty much as high as I want to in spending money for a laptop and was wondering if this laptop is good, is there any problems, other people's experiences and opinions on it, and if there are better one's that are roughly the same price. I'd appreciate any feedback, thanks!

Looking for Gaming laptop for school and gaming

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 05:14 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1100 and USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specs for money/good battery

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Medium to large I guess

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just games on a higher end

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Again no specific games I would just like to be able to run games on high if possible. I don't expect THE MOST INSANE laptop for $1100

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build seems to be the most important out of that to me. A good keyboard would be a bonus since I'm using it for school.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Again I'm using the laptop for school but gaming is definitely what I'll be doing in my downtime so something that would help me in the "best of both worlds" wat would be awesome. Appreciate the help!

Edit; forgot to mention I need this ASAP. Shipping to NJ quickly is appreciated

USA ~$1000 Work Laptop for Work Travelling and Gaming Laptop for Fun After Work

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 06:34 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

USA. I'd like to stay around $1000 if possible.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

I want good battery life that will last me through the work day. Specs are also top priority.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Lighter is preferred due to travelling with it.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Windows, but I can go without an OS as I have my own key from work.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    15.6" and smaller.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

HyperV VMs, Visual Studio for coding, and gaming after work during work travel.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Apex Legends, League, Albion Online, Far Cry 5/New Dawn, Division 2, a couple of indies, and newer stuff that comes out as well. Though I do have a primary gaming desktop so this is mostly for travel.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Good keyboard and trackpad are a must because I don't want to have to travel with extra stuff if I don't have to.

USB C would be appreciated. Same with finerprint, though less so than even the USB C.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Basically want an all around laptop that can be used for work during work and then for fun back at the hotel with some gaming. I would love all recommendations as I know there are a ton of other brands these days besides the basics of Dell and HP that I am used to.

    Thanks in advance!

Looking for a light, affordable, creative-enabled laptop

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 10:02 PM PDT

    Hello all!

I already have a laptop (ASUS GL552J) that I use for heavy lifting, programming, and gaming.

However, I have now found myself needing a laptop that's light and portable, has a good battery life, and handles Adobe CC Programs (InDesign, Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator) well.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, $500-800

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    I need:

    • Good battery life (6-8 hrs)
    • Light form factor (13", around 2-3 lbs)
    • Powerful enough to smoothly run Adobe CC programs and MS Word.
    • No touchscreen needed. I'm honestly not a fan.

The "best specs" don't matter to me as much as being able to run InDesign and Photoshop without my computer lagging out or crashing.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

After lugging around my 5 lbs laptop with its 8 lbs of charger cables for 4 years of college, I am done with having a heavy backpack. I need a light-ish laptop with a small and thin form factor. I need something that is the antithesis to my current gaming laptop.

    Again, small, lightweight, good battery.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows. Definitely. I need my customizability.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13" is a happy medium for me. It does not need to be my workstation, just a portable productivity and creative tool.

I would like the screen to be as color accurate as possible. Brightness and matte is a plus. I'd prefer it to not be oversaturated as well.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

The most important programs for me are:

    • Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, Illustrator, Spark
    • MS Word
    • Google Docs/Drive

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No gaming required! Maybe Terraria occasionally, but nothing more than that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would like a good keyboard with medium travel, and good build quality so it doesn't shit out on me in 2 years.

For I/O: a USB 3.1 A port, and possibly a Thunderbolt 3 connection would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Repeating myself for the umpteenth time here, I don't need anything too fancy or expensive.

I am pressing the importance of those Adobe CC programs working at lightspeed—as well as it being reliable and not breaking down in a couple years.

I would also really like it to have at least a 6 hour battery life, while being light and portable.

    Laptop for School

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 06:14 PM PDT

Hello everyone. Any advice would be appreciated as I'm trying to find a laptop and I don't really have that high of a budget.

I'm a college student and I commute, so I'm looking for something portable with relatively good battery life. I don't want a chromebook or anything with Windows S as I can't stand that. My primary reason for getting the laptop is for writing, so it would be good if the keyboard wasn't abysmal. It needs to have a USB 2 or 3 port for flash drives. But, I don't have much other needs than that. I don't plan to play games on it or anything than that. I already have a good PC, but it's a desktop, so obviously it's not portable. My ideal budget is something in the $300 range, but I can push it to the $400s if need be.

    Thanks in advance!

[USA] - $400-600 - General Purpose convertible laptop w/light video editing.

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 06:13 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    Country: USA / Amazon.com preferred

    Budget: $400-$600, lower is better

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Convertible w/touch screen form factor preferred.

Long running battery (for YouTube/Facebook) preferred.

(Video Editing expected to be on wall power)

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Medium weight, thinness secondary to weight. No behemoth please.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    15in

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Light gaming and light video editing. (most more intense VE tasks on a bigger system)

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

The Sims, Bioshock series. Decent, but not super-ultra-hairs-on-a-fly settings.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Good build quality, touch screen, and accurate touchpad.

No preference to processor as long as x86_64 windows applications work as expected.

At least 2TB storage on primary drive.

Field upgradeable (storage and RAM) and field serviceable.

    Decent audio with headset/mic ports.

    Wi-Fi and Bluetooth available.

At least two USB ports (three if using USB-C).

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

This laptop is for my wife, she wants a good general purpose machine for couch-side operations or on-the-go work(hence the convertible). Facebook, Youtube, some gaming (not often), and some video editing but nothing crazy intense. Goal is a good processor that has power when she needs it, but not a monsterous rig and a good battery that will last for a while but not kill her to pick up. Upgradeability is a must, I want to be able to add RAM and upgrade the hard drive/SSD in the future.

Y'all did such a great job recommending me the Asus G751JT that's still rocking five years later so here I am in need of finding a laptop for my wife. She has been limited to using her phone and has been prodding me to get her a laptop for $WINTER_GIFT_GIVING_EVENT so I figured I'd finally get it taken care of and using something better than her phone to do things.

If you have any questions, or need some more details, please let me know. Thank you!

Risk it or nah? ASUS FX505DT (help me out)

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 09:33 PM PDT

So basically I'm planning on getting a new budget gaming laptop for a very cheap price:

    https://www.amazon.com/R5-3550H-Processor-Graphics-FX505DT-AH51-Keyboard/dp/B07VBK4SYS/ref=sr_1_14?keywords=gaming+laptop&qid=1568261847&s=gateway&sr=8-14

I live overseas so that's the cheapest and reasonably price/performance (also 120hz display) laptop that ships to my country. Even though the laptops seems cheap ($699USD), the price would jack up up to (800USD+) after all the shipping and import fees. The reviews seems to shred the laptop to pieces and I'm wondering if I should risk it?

Or is there any other decently priced laptop or should I just settle for a 1050ti 4* average review instead around that range? What should I do? Also no "dude just slap in $150 more and get xxx instead", I am on a REALLY tight budget.

    MacBook Pro 13 2019 or Dell XPS 13 7390 (2019)

    Posted: 11 Sep 2019 03:34 PM PDT

Hello! After some research and a lot of watched reviews, I'm again stucked between these two laptops. Shortly, I'm interested about something light and pretty powerfull. I'm a student who working and learning pretty much in Illustrator and Photoshop and I'm also interested about learning new programs from Adobe suite. If I will buy the Mac I want probably the one with i5 1.4 quad core, 16gb ram and 512gb storage (~1928$) and for XPS 13 the one with i7 10th generation, 16gb ram and 512gb storage (~1961$). I never had a MacBook and recently I switched from iOS to Android so I'm not familiar with the ecosystem. I'm not sure if the difference between the processors is that big and I also know sometimes the MacOS can make the difference even if the specs are better on Windows side. So, which one you guys think it's a better choice for me? Thanks 😇

P.S. I also heard a Mac has a longer life than other laptops. Is the butterfly keyboard that bad? P.S. 2 I'm not an Apple fan because of their phones but I heard the laptops division it's another thing and I'm ready to try if a Mac it's a good choice.
