    Simple Questions - April 30, 2019

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I have an old setup i need to resuscitate with a graphics card

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:27 AM PDT

I have 250$ planning to get a used graphics card but i don't know how much it will bottleneck. Read about the 1050 ti, RX 570, RX 580, GTX 970, GTX 1060, R9 290. It's all confusing!

Here are my specs: 1. CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 555 (unlocked to Phenom II X4 at ~3.4 Ghz) 2. Motherboard: msi 870-G45 gaming series 3. RAM: Adata 6 GB DDR3 @ 1333 Mhz 4. Graphics Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 5770 SOC 5. Power Supply: Gigabyte 450W (Peak power 550W) 6. Storage: 500 GB 3.5" HDD 6. CPU Cooler: Cooler Master V6 GT

I don't have an 8 pin connector. Maybe a molex to 2-pin...? Was planning to get new dimms and a cheap mouse if i am to go with lower cards.

What do you think I should do? Which graphics card? Is it worth it altogether?

P.S. I can't afford a new PC. Not for the next 2-3 years.

Edit: [Update] Thank you so much reddit and huge thanks to /u/thefalleord18 for his giveaway i have accepted his ridiculously generous gift: 1. intel core i5 4590 2. HyperX Fury 1866 MHz 16 GB (2x8) 3. msi Armour MK2 RX570 8GB OC It came as beautiful surprise to me I couldn't be happier and I'm very grateful for this!

What do you think will the specs required for the upcoming Halo MCC on PC?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:49 AM PDT

Helping a friend with a new build. He doesn't game much so he doesn't use a 144hz screen but uses a 4k 60hz screen and would like a to play at high settings.

Which nvidia graphics card you guys think would be suitable for the upcoming Halo Master Chief collection on PC?

CPU wise he'll be getting a 9900k for video editing purposes.

Should I upgrade my CPU or buy another stick of ram?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:05 AM PDT

I have just switched to GTX 1070 from a 1050 Ti so my other hardware started bottlenecking my GPU. When I asked around some people said I should upgrade my CPU some said ı should upgrade my RAM. Which one should I do? (i cant do both btw.)

    specs;

    GTX 1070 i5 7500 8GB DDR4 2600Mhz Single Channel ASUS Z270H Motherboard.

EDIT: Also is it worth upgrading from i5 7500 to i7 7700k? or should I save to buy a new motherboard?

Two questions about the 2070 RTX!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:13 AM PDT

    1. Which edition is the "best" overall (price and features)? I'm mainly buying a new rig for gaming.

    2. Is it worth paying more for an OC version of the 2070 RTX card? I never OCd before.

    Thanks!

    9600k + 2060 = good enough for 1440p@144hz?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:08 AM PDT

Im building rig for my 1440p monitor, high refresh rate ofcourse and freesync. My question is, for titles like dota & pubg, maybe gta V will this combo be good enough? Im not interested if future AAA titles, I will do programming, amater video edit and web development. Also, if I want to clock 9600k @ 5.0ghz, will Gigabyte Z390 UD (entry gigabyte) will be enough with arctic freezer 34 duo?

Cases with Cat And Coffee-Safe™ top airflow?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:35 AM PDT

While spending way too much time looking at cases for my new build, weighing the options etc. etc. I have come to the conclusion that top vents are, after all, near indispensable for proper airflow given how little room there generally is at the back (usually no more than 1x120mm). OTOH, that doesn't solve my cat issue and coffee paranoia which is the reason I was avoiding top airflow in the first place, so the question is:

Are there any cases which have a solid top, venting the top airflow out to the sides, just as cases with solid front take in air from the sides?

Ideally without windows, please, those are silly. <50 Euro (not counting fans) would be nice, but it's not a hard limit. Full-size µATX, 230mm GPU (which is shorter than the board so don't worry).

Otherwise I might just have to go with a Chieftec Gaming Cube CI-01B-OP, place it at a coffee-safe height, and install some of these.

EDIT: I could also forget about top airflow and get a midi tower instead. I also considered just drilling holes into the top of the side panels, but aside from cases with PSU on top, there's just too little space.

I know some people that skip an HDD and use a 1TB or 2TB SSD for their storage. Since SSD's are so cheap now, is this the way to go?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:02 AM PDT

I've been out of the PC game for a couple years and was astounded to see SSD prices are so cheap. Is it worth it to just use SSD as your primary storage? Especially if you aren't going past 2TB

Need to increase ssd size. Dell 5810

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:30 PM PDT

The 256gb ssd I have in this Dell is too small for the cad work I am going to use it for. I would like to have at least 1tb minimum. Is it smarter to replace the current ssd or just add an internal 1 tb ssd? Windows 10 64bit with 128gb ram

An external drive is not what I'm looking for. It would need to be internal.

    First draft of first build

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:39 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yup.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mostly solo gaming, with a bit of competitive gaming if I get the itch.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'd like 4k capability at reasonably high FPS (72+) at max settings for most games for the next few years.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Shooting for $1500ish or less, but with a couple hundred dollar wiggle room. The build I have is close to the max I'd want to spend unless I have a compelling reason.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

I feel like this is potentially overkill, but I'm not sure where to improve. I started with the 144 FPS Ultra build and did a bit of tinkering from that starting point. I'll be shopping for a 4k TV soon to use as a monitor; since I mostly play single player games slightly lower response rate isn't a big deal to me.

There's a couple of compatibility notes about SATA 6.0 ports being disabled, but as far as I can tell that wouldn't be a big deal since I think I've got more than enough.

    Upgrading: Please Review

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:36 PM PDT

TLDR: Please review and let me know what I can do for $350 (range) worth of upgrades.

    Current Build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/p7nb3b

    Projected build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wTHdLJ

    --------------

    Background:

A friend got me back into PC Gaming after almost a decade of playing consoles. He was generous enough to give me his old rig (minus graphics card). I am by no means a building expert, but I'm learning. My thought process was to buy components that would last a few years and then upgrade more in the future. After playing a lot of shooter games, I got tired of only getting 30-60 FPS. Long story short, I purchased a Gigabyte GTX 1070 and a 244 hz monitor thinking that would do the trick. Now I realize that I need to upgrade my motherboard and CPU. I'd like to maximize my 1070 while staying under $350 worth of upgrades if it's possible. Please, give critique.

    Thank you for your time.

Problem with AMD Wraith Prism Cooler Software

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:04 AM PDT

I recently built a pc with the Ryzen 7 2700x paired with the Wraith Prism cooler, and want to control it's lights with the accompanying rgb software. A quick google search and I was told to go here to get the software : https://www.coolermaster.com/amd-ryzen-wraith-prism-rgb-software/

But after clicking on the link, I get the famous 404 error. Any idea what I could do to control the fan lights?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

EDIT : u/nick_cm from CoolerMaster has come through, and fixed the link. It now works. Thank you to everyone who tried to help. Ya'll are awesomesauce.

    Upgrade from R9 290X. Help?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:37 AM PDT

My daughter wants to give her fella a surprise for his birthday, and she's asked me to help. He's currently got a R9 290x, and I wondered what would be a decent upgrade for him. I've looked at telliing her to get him a RX590, and I wondered if that would be a decent enough upgrade? (Tried to compare the cards on GPUBoss, but the 590 isn't on there)

    He's got a i7 3770k and 16GB ram on his board.

    Thanks.

Is it time to upgrade from the i7-2600k for 4k gaming?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:46 AM PDT

    I have a gtx1080 and a 2600k OC'd at 4.7GHZ. I get about 50-60fps in most games at 4k resolution @ low settings.

Would an upgrade to 9900k be meaningful as far as value? I would be upgrading motherboard and ram also.

    Looking for a Router

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:55 PM PDT

I have pretty weak internet being 10mbps but there are a lot of people that use it. If I try to play anything precise like a fighter game when people are messing around on facebook my gameplay gets absolutely mutilated. Is there a router that would be able to isolate bandwidth enough to not interfere? Or through some means of QoS save me from this hell that the internet has become? Upgrading speed isn't an option since it is a grandfathered program and no better speed in my area.

Building a gaming PC. Thoughts on this build. Budget is $1,500 or less. What do I need to fix? Want to play most games, given the budget. Computer will serve no other purpose.

What is the best 27" IPS monitor I can buy around or under $300?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2019 08:21 PM PDT

Monitor will mostly be used for work. IPS and 27" are must haves.

I am a little price sensitive, but I need a new monitor more than anything right now.

I am negotiable on 1440p vs 4k, price is more of an issue, but 4k would be nice.

Not sure Freesync is necessary, I haven't seen it in person, so I don't know if it is needed/worth it?
