    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

After using years of shitty laptop for gaming, I finally couldn't bear it and completed my first pc build!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:23 AM PDT

I have been using Lenovo Flex 14 for 4 years for gaming since my old pc won't boot. It takes ages to open any game and when I play CS:GO. It usually won't be able to load into the game before the warmup time ends (5 minutes) unless I force close the game and reopens it. Most of the time I cannot do anything else when I have a game open and I have to force close all the background software whenever I want to play a game. It drove me insane and finally, I decided to build a pc.

    Userbenchmark of my laptop

My budget was $1000 and here is the build I have gone for. I tried to choose parts that get a lot of praise here for their build quality and performance. For the CPU, I went for 1600 since I heard it has a better cooler than 2600 and don't need to update BIOS with a ryzen CPU like the 2nd gen.

Unforunately in my country, everything is a little bit higher in price so I ended up paying $1100 for the build. I bought a Cooler Master Universal LED Strip RGB for $25 as well because it looks cool.

I definitely made a huge newbie mistake of choosing parts that are overkill which makes the build much costly than I need. I aimed for smooth gaming experience and don't mind playing with low/mid setting but ended up with a build that can run most games at highest settings. I could have chosen a cheaper motherboard and PSU now that I think of it. I should get one more 8GB Ram as well but it is just so damn expensive right now so I guess I will wait for the price to drop a bit first.

It was so thrilling and scary before the boot as I always imagine I would fuck up something, especially because the stock cooler's screws are so damn short. I had to apply a lot of force to get the screw in. I was so scared the motherboard would break but thank god it is fine. Everything else was smooth and after the boot I can say I enjoyed the whole process.

Overall I am really satisfied with the build and thank you /r/buildapc for all the information that helped me finish this build!

Edit: Since so many people asked about the puck that my headphone is hanging on. It is a NZXT Puck that comes with the S340 elite case. You can buy the puck directly on amazon!

The power supply in that list is incorrect. I am using a Corsair RMX650. I have also added an extra SSD and a 4TB 7.2k RPM HDD.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Title says it all. I have used my current build for about 6 months using it for gaming and some programming. Lately, I have been using this computer a lot more for programming/development and have been noticing 100% CPU usage when working. I work as a full stack web dev and it is common for me to have many many programs open at once, which takes up all of my processor. I have also noticed this in certain CPU intensive games such as R6S, where having one other program opens loses me about 20 fps.

I know that I have a 1060 and a 1060 would be a bottleneck for gaming with this processor, but would it be worth it to upgrade to the i7 8700k purely for productivity sake? I am not sure if this would solve my problem or not. Thanks for any replies!

Why are older used CPUs so expensive?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:26 AM PDT

So I'm using a haswell i3 socket 1150, looked at local listings and ebay etc.. thinking I'll pick up a cheap upgrade to an i5 for the extra 2 cores for photo editing and video rendering. The prices are.. insane. Am I out of touch or are people selling these things out of touch? At that price I could pay a little more and swap my mobo+cpu out for a current gen budget build with possibly more power. What gives?

hi guys, my pc started to go to 90-100c latley. i changed the cooler system. and applied new paste, and it didnt work. i re-installed the cooler to face the pc fan, and i sew the cooler fan wasnt spinning so i twich the bios to highest voltage and the fan started to work. when i checked temp is started to downgrade from 100c to 50c, but after less then 30 minutes went up tp 100c when the fan was still spinning.

i restarted the pc and went to bios and sew:

    temp: 91c

cpu fan: 1036 RPM sys fan: 0 RPM (that was the second time in the bios, first time is was 505 RPM

Here's how the fan + cooler looks from inside: https://streamable.com/npz5s

i checked multiple times that the paste is in place.

any tips? im lost here... thanks.

Starting my first PC build from scratch. Looking for help avoiding dumb mistakes.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:38 PM PDT

I'm looking for some advice on my first ever PC build for a gaming PC likely for RPG games like Far Cry/the Witcher but also FPS games like PUBG/fortnite maybe some COD etc (although I'm not great with mouse and keyboard so probably not that competitively). What I mostly need help with is looking at my list of part ideas to see if there are any obvious bottlenecks, any parts that I'm overspending on, or if I have any unrealistic idea of prices one way or the other.

I'm looking to be playing games on pretty high settings particularly the RPG games and I initially was trying really hard to keep it around the $1500 range but understand that given my expectations I will likely end up in the $2000 range (buying in the United States).

I'm starting completely from scratch (all I really have is a mouse) and I have a PC part picker list set up so everything I'm looking at should be compatible, but I'm also willing to wait for a few months trying to find deals to bring the price down a little so I'm not locked in on brands or anything like that. Here's the basics of what I have so far and what I expect to spend on each part:

Main Components: CPU- Intel i7 7700k ($310) GPU- GTX 1080 ($615) Monitor- 34" 1440p 144GHz ($610) (A big monitor is important for me as I plan on using this monitor when I work from home as well as for gaming) Memory- 16GB ($150) Storage- SSD 480GB ($110) Motherboard- Any ATX size compatible with the rest of the build ($90) Case- Any ATX size compatible with the rest ($25) PSU- 750W Gold certified ($80) Cooler- Cheapest reasonable option ($20) Wireless card: 802.11 a/b/g/n ($40)

Peripherals: Keyboard- Mechanical ($60) Headphones- Something comfortable over the ear with a mic ($50)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Again I'm not necessarily looking for specific parts more of an overview of if I'm missing anything obvious or if there are any serious flaws with my expectations in terms of price for the specs I'm looking for.

I plan on trying to nudge the price of some of these down by actively looking for deals for this stuff over the course of the next month or so.

    Thanks!

I could've gotten a new (used) car, or this. I chose this.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 06:41 PM PDT

    Pre-build post

    pc-partpicker list

    The journey:

    Additional Notes:

3 27' monitors is a lot. I'm going to give my neck a work-out. Its long enough that I (6ft tall) could lie down on 'em as a makeshift bed.

The tri-stand was a pain to get up, and the stand takes up too much central room. Were I to do this over again, I would either get a different tri-stand, or just use 3 base stands.

Microcenter saved my nearly $600 'cause everything there is cheap. nearly $400 saved on the predator monitors alone.

To those of you looking for 1080TIs, your welcome. In a few weeks, prices will go down now that I got mine.

144hz is totally worth it. 3 monitors are totally worth it. Its a shame you can't have both at the same time.

    Can't decide between i5 8400 and Ryzen 1600

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:47 AM PDT

Main purpose is gaming (AAA games, Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed) at 1080p with a 580/1060.

    The Ryzen 1600 costs 146€ right now. Plus motherboard (Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming, 50€) and RAM (2666mhz, 80€) I'm at 276€.

    The 8400 costs 160€. Plus motherboard (Gigabyte B360 HD3, 82€) and RAM (2400mhz, 75€) I'm at 317€.

I can't decide because the 8400 should be better in games but the 1600 with mobo is way cheaper. The B360 ATX motherboards aren't much cheaper than Z370 ones. The AM4 motherboards are really cheap right now.

Also a minor point but the stock cooler of the 1600 performs and looks much better.

So if someone could help me with the decision or point out if I missed something I would be grateful.

[Troubleshooting] Classic RAM troubles on a Ryzen build

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:43 PM PDT

So I built a PC thanks to this sub a few months ago and it's been running great. Here's some relevant specs:

    -R5 1600 (stock wraith cooler)

    -GTX 1080

    -Asus ROG B350-F Strix

    -G. Skill Trident Z RGB 3200mhz cl 16 F4-3200C16D-GTZR (yes it's hynix I know)

-I forget the specific BIOS version but I updated it to the lastest that was out when I built it back in December.

I was debating between the RAM kit I got and the 3200mhz cl14 B-die Flare X kit which was the same price. I decided to go for the RGB thinking I'd be able to work around the worse compatibility. Regrets.

    So to the issue:

I ran the PC at stock speeds for a while before I decided to overclock. Set the CPU to 3.8ghz with the voltage left at the stock auto setting, which surprisingly was stable after running Cinebench and testing with the Realbench stress test. The RAM was running at 2133 by default so I tried to enable the XMP profile but that wouldn't even boot. So I set it to 2933 with 1.35v and everything else left at auto setting with the timings left at 16-18-18-38 and left it that way for the passed few months and it was perfectly stable. I recently decided to bump it up and used the Ryzen DRAM calculator, but none of it's suggested timings and voltages would even boot the PC. I tried the safe settings and it still did not work. So I put everything back to auto and set the speed at 3066mhz and the voltage at 1.355v with 16-18-18-38 timings. It passed the Realbench stress test at these settings but occasionally it will fail to boot when I turn my PC on and boot into safe mode. All I do then is exit BIOS and it boots perfectly with my saved OC settings.

    My questions:

    1. The occasional failure to boot, despite the lack of any other signs of instability, is something I don't understand. What could be the cause? Does it need more voltage? Loosened timings ( these are already too loose for my liking as it is)?

    2. How could I push this RAM to 3200mhz without setting it to even worse timings?

    3. I've seen comments about the newer BIOS updates for the Asus B350 strix actually making RAM issues worse. Is this actually the case or would a simple BIOS update make things easier for my specific MOBO and RAM?

Sorry for the wall of text.

TLDR: R5 1600 @3.8ghz auto voltage (fluctuates ~ 1.25-1.38v). G. Skill F4-3200C16D-GTZR @ 3066mhz 1.355v 16-18-18-38. Passes stress test and runs PUBG, etc. fine but occasionally fails and boots into safe mode when powering on. Never fails to boot up when exiting BIOS. What gives? Are the latest BIOS on my specific board any better? I'm hesitant to update because of negative comments I've read about the newer BIOS.

    Computer boots to bios

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:06 PM PDT

Stuff: I5-8400 (brand new) + stock cooler B360M-ds3h (brand new) GTX 1050 TI 8gb RAM HyperX 2133Mhz 500W EVGA PSU CRucial MX 250gb SSD

EDIT: Yup both hdd I've tried have win10 installed.

Okay, I'm at a loss here fellas. Just built this computer (not my first time) and it continually boots into BIOS. OK, fine. The trouble is that it can't find a bootable device even though my SSD is plugged in. I've also tried another hdd. Same result.

I have reseated the cpu cooler, ram, video card, power supply cords, etc. to no avail. What's going on?

EDIT2: Rufus usb bootable drive not being recognized either. Still boots str8 to bios. Faulty mobo?

My build is getting expensive. What can I do to lower the cost without sacrificing performance?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:02 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, programming, possibly some video editing and 3d modelling. Needs to be compatible with some common Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and Debian.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p at 60Hz for now. Looking at running most AAA games on ultra. May upgrade to 1080 144Hz later.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Trying to keep my budget close to $2100 CAD with 13% HST included, I can go higher if it's needed. Just looking for some things I can downgrade or remove from the list.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

The ram is being given to me for free, which is why it's only 8GB-2400Mhz. I'll upgrade that later, but for now it'll do and keep the costs down. Unfortunately, the graphics card is already purchased. I realize that I overpaid but what's done is done. I don't want to return it because it received some pretty good reviews in terms of noise, thermals, and build quality (I don't think it's even possible with Newegg's replacement only policy). I'm new to pc building. So I'd like to know what kinds of parts can be downgraded/removed from the list without sacrificing performance. I'm looking to overclock, which is why I'm going with liquid cooling and an unlocked processor.

I just got a brand new hard drive and I went in to plug the SATA cable in, at first it worked. So I put the back panel of my case on and booted my pc up. Nothing showed up in that sata slot. So I took the panel back off, and saw that the sata and power fell out. I went back to plug the sata in and no click was heard nor felt and the cable didn't stay in place. Anything I can do?

Which GPU option would be better? AMD r9 290 Crossfire VS. Rx 480

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:12 PM PDT

My Current specs on my PC are:

    CPU: i7 870 overclocked @3.52GHz

    GPU: AMD rx 480 4gb

    RAM: 8gb DDR3

    Windows 7

I got a new computer in a trade with the following specs:

    CPU: i7 5930K

    GPU: AMD r9 290 Crossfired

    RAM: 24gb

    Windows 10

I know that this new cpu probably blows my current 870 out of the water but how do the graphics cards compare? I use my computer for gaming and schoolwork. I play mostly AAA games like far cry 5, Dirt 4, and Witcher 3. My current rig plays these games pretty wells but I'm looking to get a third monitor soon and maybe a VR setup.

I used this site to compare the two card setups and I'm not sure what to make of it. https://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=3575&gid2=2398&compare=radeon-rx-480-8gb-vs-radeon-r9-290-crossfire

    GPU downgrade questions

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:49 PM PDT

I currently have a Ryzen 5 1600 rig witha GTX1080. My mother asked me for a desktop so I am going to give her the Rig minus the GTX1080. I already bought a 2700X and plan to use the GTX1080 there. She is only going to use the rig for web and MS office use. My old rig that died in the summer was OLD. It has a working AMD Radeon 5770 in it. Can I just use that in the Ryzen 5 rig until I find a deal on a modern GPU? Do I just turn on the Ryzen 5 rig with the GTX1080 in it, uninstall all the Nvidia software, shut down, then install the 5770? Any help or opinions is appreciated.

    Lets get started

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:00 AM PDT

    Hello friends,

Today i start my journey on building my first pc. After a couple of years of using my macbook Air for everything ( playing league and wow all the way to doing my school work ) i ave officially decided i want to make the transition from my mac to my very first pc. Instead of buying i have been advised by multiple friends and other to actually build my own. So the task i come to you with today is : help me create a good list of items or atlas help me get on the right track to getting started i am comfortable with spending a maximum of $700 but I'm pretty sure it can be done for less from the research i have already done . I will be using this pc mostly for games i.e. league, wow, fortnight etc but will also be using it to continue my practice in learning python as well as continue my school work and any other day to day usage. and good website references to get parts from or any useful information is a huge help !!

Small build with an awesome upgrade path?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2018 10:19 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm trying to build a sweet rig for my friend that allows her to use her current graphics, or sell it and sit on ryzen until she can afford a new gpu.

The idea is that monitors last the longest, and this one would basically never need to be replaced. There is room to upgrade the ram and add at least a 580 sized card into the case. Decent amount of wattage, fast ssd with more room for upgrades.

    What do you think?

    Monitor Upgrade

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:06 PM PDT

Hey guys, so i bought a new PC a year ago but i kept my old monitor (which is a 2007 1440x900 LG 19'' 60hz monitor, very old) cause i never really cared about the monitor, but many people told me it is totally worth to upgrade to 144hz, so i started to search for prices and i found these 5 monitors:

    AOC G2460PF// LG 24GM77-B// MSI Optix G24C (OPTIXG24C)// LG 24GM79G-B// Viewsonic XG2401

They're all around $320. I guess they're way cheaper in the U.S but that's the price here in my country.

Which one would you pick? Here is my build:

    MSI M/B AMD A320M GRENADE (AM4)// AMD Ryzen 5 1600X// G. Skill DDR4 8GB 2400MHz// EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB// EVGA 600W W1 80Plus// Toshiba 1TB Sata3 7200 rpm 64 MB// Deepcool ATX D-Shield

    Thanks!!!
