    Gigiabyte Aero 15X Impressions

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 04:09 AM PST

When I was looking at getting this laptop I had a hard time figuring out if it would suit my needs from the handful of reviews online. Now that I've had it for almost a month I want to give my two cents to help any others who like me are wondering if this is the right laptop. Please keep in mind that I am just giving my impressions, I have not run thorough tests on any aspect of this machine. The only point of comparison I have is my last laptop, the late 2015 13" MacBook Pro. Also, there are some great video reviews that have come out since I got mine, namely LinusTechTips, which I highly recommend watching for a proper look of the thing and also an actual review.

    TL;DR

For me, a uni student who loves to game but can't rely on a desktop at home, the Aero 15X is almost perfect. It's blazed through every game I've thrown at it, yet despite all that performance, it can still last me a day of everyday usage at home or at uni with its 5-6 hours battery life. The keyboard and trackpad aren't the best, but with a bit of tweaking and a bit of time, you'll have no problems with either. On top of great performance, the Aero 15X has a solid and attractive build, that make it portable enough for school, uni or travelling.

    Design

The Aero 15X looks and feels great. Its professional looking with the simple, all black design, yet still has a touch of 'gaming' with the subtle carbon fibre finish near the hinge of the laptop and the RGB keyboard. The build quality is also awesome, apart from some hinge issues I'll talk about in the next part. On top of that, it's quite small for a 15" laptop, so it still fits snugly in the fairly small backpack I've been putting a MacBook in for uni. It's also much lighter than I was expecting, considering the performance and battery it's got packed inside. It's got all the I/O I will ever need; 3 x USB 3.0 ports, a USB-C port, SD card reader, LAN, HDMI, mini display port and of course the headphone jack. Some may find the upward facing web-cam to be a disappointment. However, since my only use for the web-cam is video chats with friends, I think it is a worthwhile sacrifice for the miniscule bezels around the screen that make the laptop so small.

    Screen

I am very happy with the 1080p TN panel on this laptop. There is no noticeable colour shift in normal usage, colours look great, and I prefer the anti-glare coating over the normal glass of the MacBook. The only problems I have with the screen on this computer is its hinge. Firstly, the computer detects the screen as closed when its at about 30-35 degrees, often putting the computer to sleep when I just slightly close it to talk to somebody or reach over it. Secondly, when the laptop is closed, the screen and base don't stay fully shut, so when carrying it you can hear a small rattle which is the laptop opening and closing ever so slightly. This is a bit of a nit-pick, but after having the perfectly built MacBook for so long, it was something that annoyed me a little. Keyboard and Trackpad The keyboard on the Aero 15X is a great size and layout (my typing is much more accurate now), however the keys take a lot of force to press. It just doesn't feel as nice to type or play games on compared to the keyboard on the MacBook. My fingers even get tired after an extended typing or gaming sessions. Despite this, it's not a bad keyboard and I am sure I will get used to the actuation force after some time. The trackpad on the other hand, is terrible. After using a MacBook trackpad for 2 years, the one on the Aero 15X frustrated me to no end. It doesn't have support for two-fingered right clicks, gestures and just tracked extremely poorly. Luckily, I found a video from Dave Lee on YouTube where he showed how to improve trackpads by updating the driver to Windows Precision drivers. The trackpad initially had ELAN drivers, but after updating them to Precision drivers, the trackpad became so much more usable. It still isn't as good as the MacBook, but it works just fine for me now.

    Performance and Battery

I use the Aero 15X for everything. That includes: taking notes at uni, watching videos (YouTube/Netflix) and gaming (from Overwatch to Witcher 3). The Aero 15X excels when it comes to gaming, yet still does well at everything else. Considering just how powerful this machine is, I find the battery life on it very impressive. When it comes to games, the Aero 15X has run everything I've thrown at it with either max or very close to max settings. The most demanding titles I've played are Witcher 3 and PUBG, both of which run buttery smooth (>60 fps) at ultra settings. This is of course when connected to the power supply. When doing everyday tasks like streaming video or typing stuff up (like this review), I get about 5-6 hours of battery life. This is easily enough for a day of use at home or at uni for me, so it suits my needs just perfectly.

Again, please keep in mind this is just an owner's impressions. There are plenty of great technical and professional reviews out there online, but I hope some of you find this useful! Thanks for reading! 😊

edit: I know there's a typo in the title but this is my first reddit post so I don't know how to edit it :3 pls help

Laptop runs faster when on battery saver

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 09:46 AM PST

Whenever I run a game such as CS GO or Paladins, I get a jittery mess of about 15fps whenever I use high performance mode, but it becomes a bit smoother when on battery saver, about 25-26fps. This is all while plugged in.

If you know how to fix this and make it run faster on high performance, or why it is running faster in battery saver (I have not changed either of the plan settings) it would be much appreciated.

I am running an a8-7410 APU with R5 graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB HDD.

    Here's a link to the product: https://www.thesource.ca/en-ca/computers-and-tablets/laptops/all-laptops/hp-15-ba036ca-15-6%E2%80%9D-laptop-with-amd-a8-7410%2C-1tb-hdd%2C-8gb-ram-and-windows-10---silver---open-box/p/108065517

Looking for a laptop for gaming/software dev.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:05 PM PST

I'm about to go into another semester for school as a computer science major. Up until now, I've been using an Acer Travelmate that's got a whopping 2gigs of ram, runs 32-bit win 10, uses an i2 intel processor, about 13 years old, and is in general not a good computer (it was free, so that's why I used it.) It got me through C++ 1, but those were just basic programs. I imagine C++ 2 and data structures will be much, much more taxing, so I'm looking for a new laptop.

I don't have a ton of money, so I'm trying to keep under 900 for now, but I want the computer to be of lasting value. At least to get me through school (about 2-3 more years.)

I like to play games a lot in my free time and I mainly use emulators to do so, so a computer capable of running graphics at a decent level with no frame rate drop would be awesome, but not required!

Here's one I found on Newegg. Is it any good? I'm not too familiar with what parts/specs are the best right now. (Working on that currently.)

    https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16834154733/specs

    Thanks for your input!

For a general purpose (YouTube, Microsoft Word) laptop, am I missing any key specs here?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:42 AM PST

    • 8GB RAM
    • 256 GB SSD
    • Aiming for an i5 HQ CPU
    • 1920 x 1080 display
    • Windows 10

Won't be doing any gaming or editing

Feel free to laugh at me for missing something, provided you do say what I'm missing ;) Also any laptop recommendations in the UK for these specs would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

Gigabyte releasing a new Gigabyte Aero 15 at CES 2018?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 06:25 AM PST

    Hi guys,

Do you think Gigabyte will release a potential new « Gigabyte aero 15 Y » or something at CES? There are some rumors saying they will.

    • on their YouTube video presenting the 15 X, they pretty much confirmed they were working on a 120hz version.

It could have the 8th generation of Intel's CPU + 120hz monitor / or 4K I would be kinda pissed of as i just ordered the aero 15 X.

Moderate use, Light gaming. Acer Aspire 5 or Swift 3?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:52 AM PST

So I've been looking around and these are the two laptops I liked so far, but I'm open to other options.

    Aspire 5

    Swift 3

Here is my form from a previous post-

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $800-1000, Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't really care too much for a touchscreen/2-in-1 etc. I would say value for money is my most important criteria.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very, since I don't intend to carry it around much, maybe a few times a year. However I do want a laptop that doesn't look clunky.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 or 15

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Game: Dota 2 occassionally. Other than that I plan to use my laptop for streaming, Twitch, Netflix and Youtube about 6-8 hours a day.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play dota 2 casually, so whatever settings work best with my new laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build-quality, since I can be a little heavy-handed with my devices. My previous laptops lasted about 3 years each. Back-lit keys would be nice-to-have but not necessary.

    Thanks!

My mom keeps trying to force me to fix my broken laptop motherboard for $410 and I don’t know what to do

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:12 AM PST

I am currently short on money since I'm a student, and recently she keeps angrily telling me every day to fix my broken Samsung ATIV Book 8 motherboard for $410(REFURBISHED MOTHERBOARD). I keep telling her that the old Vaio I'm currently using is totally fine, and refurb boards can go wrong, but she defends me by saying "That laptop fucking costed '1400000 korean won' when you bought it. Considering the amount of money that laptop costs, shouldn't you fucking fix it for '410000 korean won'?". This is has been going on for like a month, and I still haven't fucking decided whether to fix my laptop or not.

    My laptop has a i7 4700hq and a gt 750m DDR3.

It has a broken keyboard that I would diy fix it for $30, but since she is a fucktard she won't allow me to diy repair it and tell me to fix it on samsung service center for $130. She also won't allow third party service centers.

What the fuck should I do?!?!?!?!?

Also, do bga repairs work on broken motherboards caused by drop damage?

Impulsively jumped on a sale. How'd I do? What do I need to buy next

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 06:49 AM PST

I snagged a Dell XPS 13 yesterday from the local Microsoft store. $749 for this model -- https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/d/dell-xps-13-9360-xps9360-5203slv-pus-laptop/91pm69zkf1k2/34r1?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

A decent deal? They've since marked it back up to 999.99.

Aside from me needing to decide whether I can live with a 13 inch device, I'm suddenly realizing I that connecting my 2 external monitors is going to be more difficult than I thought. I have both an HDMI and DVI/VGA monitor to connect via that Thunderbolt 3. Yet, I don't seem to be able to find any reasonably priced adapters to easily do this? Am I missing something?

All said, I need to upgrade the SSD to at least 500gb ($150-ish), and if I have to buy an expensive adapter ($$100-ish), I'm looking at a total investment of about $1,000 to get the machine usable. That makes me wonder if this is such a good deal after all. Would I be better buying a $1,000 laptop that's ready to go out of box? Anything with comparable specs for that price?

Any guidance or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

    Samsung 960 Pro 2TB Compatibility

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 06:44 AM PST

Hey, so I got a new Acer laptop with m.2 slots, I was wondering if the 960 pro 2tb version will be compatible with it, as I havent seen anyone actually try that and I dont want to spend money on one that doesnt actually work. And I talked with an Acer Sales Chat representative, he told me they only tested the laptop with 1tb drives, not 2tb drives so they are not sure about it. It should be able to work right? I just want to be sure before purchasing it.

Is it bad for the laptop battery to always be connected to the charger?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 03:35 PM PST

I know this is a noob question, and for that i am sorry

I just got a new laptop for Xmas (Asus UX430UA) and i always heard that it was bad for the laptop's battery to constantly be connected to the charger. Is this still a thing? Is it better for the battery to go to 0% and then charge the laptop again?

    Thank you for your help!

Dell XPS 15 vs ASUS ZenBook Pro UX550VE

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 07:37 PM PST

I need a laptop in the ~$1500 range and I have came to these 2 as my current picks. I need good graphics(1920x1080), I would prefer an i5 over an i7 to save cost, but not needed. I want ~15 inches. I want at least 500gb of storage. What do you guys think? Which of the two listed laptops is better? Would you recommend me a different model? Thanks! Edit: I probably should have said this earlier, but it is for mainly school, and some light gaming.

[Advice] upgrading my laptop HDD -> SSD

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 08:55 PM PST

I have a Dell Inspiron 3542. Bought newish 3 years ago, HDD no longer working, a friend who knows this looked at the laptop and said a drive replacement would fix it. What size SSD do I want, 7mm or 9.5?

    It's a 2.5".

I'm looking at buying a ~500GB drive, anything I should know about SSD selection? I only plan to use it for online browsing / writing / study. No image / video / audio editing and limited / low graphics gaming. I want 500GB space for comfort.

Wait or buy now? Acre Aspire e15 (i3 core)

This is the laptop in question: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01K1IO3QW/ref=mp_s_a_1_3/143-6622004-2843715?ie=UTF8&qid=1514949887&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=acer+aspire+e+15+e5-575-33bm&dpPl=1&dpID=41HfDkXXyeL&ref=plSrch

Originally I bought it w/o tax from a different seller, had to return it however since it wasn't the same laptop - same CPU, GPU etc. but vastly different screen reso, less ports, worse battery (I swear they were trying to disguise it lol).

Question is, should I wait for another seller within the next month in the hopes that I can get it for cheaper?
