Posted: 31 Dec 2017 10:13 AM PST So, I have a valid Windows 7 key and am trying to recover a computer with a dead harddrive. I received it second hand as a gift and do not have the install disk (if there ever was one). For information's sake, let's say it's a CyberPower Inc pc (not sure who they are honestly, but it's on the label). So here's my problem---on the Windows site, it won't let me download the Windows 7 install file because my key is, "From a third party company. Please contect them for reboot information," or something to that effect. How the bleeping hell am I supposed to install this? And no, for my purposes, I am not interested in Windows 10. Any help would be much much appreciated! Happy New Years [link] [comments]
HELP: My hard drive space quickly disappears every time I turn my computer on Posted: 31 Dec 2017 03:56 PM PST This morning I started with 70gb available on my C drive, and within two hours it diminished to 0. My computer freaks out after that happens and crashes windows explorer, and then it takes about 30 minutes to boot back up. I've defragged, I've compressed the files to clear space, I've ran disk clean up, and I've uninstalled all of the apps that I don't use. I haven't been able to find a fix because all of my searches come up about disk usage in task manager and that isn't what my problem is. Don't really know where to go/how to recover so any help is appreciated. [link] [comments]

Changing settings from an external device? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:17 PM PST I essentially want to make a device that has a slider that changes mouse sensitivity through USB. The mouse is a Bluetooth one if this helps and I will do it through an Arduino most likely. Any way I can achieve this? Edit: I'm on Windows 10. [link] [comments]

OneDrive crashing, can't access files Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:13 PM PST It has been several days, and I have seen some talk about it on Discord, but I haven't seen a post about this. OneDrive currently refuses to open on my Windows 10 computer. I did upgrade to an Insider Preview and then downgrade back down to the September Creator's Update, but unsure if that was the cause. I get errors such as "A device attached to the system is not functioning", Explorer says Sync Pending, and when I open the OneDrive application, it crashes. Anyone care to discuss? Trojan conimx.exe detected by norton. How to remove? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 06:32 PM PST As stated in the title, each time I turn on my computer, conimx.exe will be detected by my antivirus but it has no remove option. Instead, it is only blocked. Any idea how to get rid of conimx.exe once and for all? [link] [comments]
Win7 Startup Loop Fixes Not Working, Possible HDD Label Problem? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:28 PM PST Usually, I wouldn't come here scratching my head like this, but I am so confused by what my computer is doing that I'm not sure how to proceed. Anyways, I am running Windows 7 and after putting off some updates for a while, I installed them. Lo and behold, a day later, my computer is caught in a startup loop, giving me the reason that my OS loader could not be found. Startup Repair finds the problem, can't fix it, and bounces me back to the beginning. I'm kind of used to this by now, so I go about my normal procedures to try and fix it. However, nothing seems to be working. So I ventured into the territory of repairing the bootmgr manually. However, I am running into some problems. I booted from a flashdrive that has the Windows 7 Ultimate that I'm using on the comp. However, upon clicking "Repair Computer", the subsequent page doesn't seem to be able to locate my Windows installation. Odd, whatever, let's see if I can brute force it a bit. I open the command prompt and begin to plug in the commands to repair to boot files. This is where I start to see more problems: my computer memory is split between three hard drives. Two SSDs and one HDD. The first SSD is the one that has my OS on it. The problem is, my computer seems to think that that disk is labeled "C". Which, normally it would be, but on my computer, the SSD with the operating system on it is labeled "E". Anyways, I keep running into various problems with trying to repair the boot files. For example, bootrec /fixmbr works fine. However, bootrec /fixboot kicks back an "Element Not Found" error. Bootrec /rebuildbcd identifies the Windows installation, but when I attempt to add it to my list (pressing 'A'), it also displays an "Element Not Found" error. Wires are clearly getting crossed somewhere. A fresh reset wouldn't be the worst thing on the planet, since I have my files on those two other disks, but I am still trying to understand what exactly went wrong here. If someone is familiar with this issue, and might be able to lend me their beard to stroke, I'd appreciate it. [link] [comments]
Two hard drives, two Windows installs, want to ignore one on boot. Posted: 31 Dec 2017 06:15 PM PST Hello! First off, a big thank you to anyone else who's in on New Year's Eve answering dummy questions like mine :) I have two SATA hard drives with Windows installs (one is a salvage from an older unit). When trying to boot up, the computer freezes at the initial BIOS screen. Unplugging the one with an old Windows install (or moving it to USB, so it has decreased boot priority) solves the problem. I was hoping to figure out a quick and easy way to have both hard drives plugged in via SATA, but to mark the old Windows install drive as "not bootable, don't even try, yes I know there's :\Windows, but trust me just pretend it's not there". Unfortunately, my BIOS doesn't let me select individual drives in boot order - it's just "Hard disk / Optical Disc / USB / Network" levels of granularity. Thanks again to anyone who can lend some quick assistance! [link] [comments]
Trouble activating Windows 10 Pro Posted: 31 Dec 2017 09:05 AM PST First off, I'm not entirely tech illiterate but I'm no expert so forgive me if I sound dumb as a stump. Long story as short as possible, I got fed up with Apple's OS so I asked a friend of mine (IT guy) to install Windows 10 on my Macbook Air. The install was with a legitimate copy of Windows 10 Pro (sourced through his workplace as I understand it). However, he forgot to activate Windows before returning my computer. When I got home, I tried to activate it however the key he provided didn't work. He's a busy guy and hasn't had a chance to really work with me on this yet so being the DIY guy I am and being determined to learn I attempted to figure it out. I tried a couple keys I came across online (bad idea??) to no avail. Now, I know I can run Windows 10 without activating it however I don't like being limited in my settings and the watermark bugs the hell out of me. Questions: The last key I tried seems to have changed the windows edition to Windows 10 Education despite Pro being the one installed. Did I fuck something up or is that just connected to the key itself? If my friend is unable to find the correct key, can I simply buy a copy of Windows Home ($100 cheaper than Pro) and install it easily since I'm currently running Windows? Here's what I see in the activation window now. The product key on there is not the one I was originally given. It's one I tried after searching around online: [link] [comments]
Why are my Windows 10 libraries defaulting to OneDrive? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 06:26 AM PST I just noticed that my Windows 10 libraries (documents, pictures, etc) all default to OneDrive. Why? I don't use OneDrive. I don't want to use OneDrive. I will never use OneDrive, it serves no purpose for me. Anyway, I try to change it to C:\Users\Me\Documents (for one example), and it won't let me. It gives me an error saying "Can't move the folder because there is a folder in the same location that can't be redirected. Access is denied." So, what should I do to eliminate the involvement of OneDrive in my libraries? [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:22 AM PST My computer froze about once every other day after the Fall Creators Update, I have to hold the power button to shut off the computer. After reinstalling Windows and keeping my files, it kept happening. So I did a clean reinstallation yesterday and my heart sank when it still froze, earlier today. One time after the computer froze, the last eventviewer log under "Setup" said "Package KB4058043 was successfully changed to the Installed state.". Based on the timestamp, it seems to have caused it that time. Other times, there's nothing in the event log that seems to indicate what causes the freezing. So I've tried to uninstall update "KB4058043", but it keeps coming back. Question 1: Is there a way in Win 10 to disable automatic updates? Question 2: Any ideas what's causing all this? How come when I aggregate all the GBs on my comp, it doesn't add up to my SSD size? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 08:09 PM PST I've already made sure to turn on hidden folders and system files, and when highlighting all the stuff on "This PC" I get 132 GB of data, with 91.4 free, which adds up to 223.4, but my SSD should have 232 all together. What gives [link] [comments]
Windows Hello sucks. Am I using it wrong? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 08:04 PM PST Unlike iPhone X FaceID, Windows Hello seems incapable of recognizing any change, whether that be glasses, hats, or even wet hair and different lighting conditions. Do I just need to train it more? [link] [comments]

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:23 AM PST So I got a new, rather small SSD that has 126gb. I added it to my machine, and saw that my C:\ is using around the same size. I realized that moving the entire C:\ drive would eventually fill the SSD up and figured I should only move my Windows folder- without Users or Program Files. Is it possible, or are those folders must stay together? I tried reading online, but had mixed answers. Thanks and happy new year! [link] [comments]

Unsuccessfully trying to install Windows 10 Home, to overwrite Windows 10s Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:00 AM PST Hi Guys I have been doing my best to rid my laptop of Windows 10s I made a USB for this, with the MediaCreationTool and Windows 10 I have then rebooted my laptop from the USB and installed this. The result is that I have found myself staring at Windows 10s still. Where could I be getting this wrong? When I made the USB files the only option was "Windows 10" - no mention of home or s or pro. I have actually tried installing it twice, once from the boot menu, once by directly clicking the files in the USB Please help, Microsoft Edge will drive me absolutely bonkers otherwise! Keyboard not working during Windows Hello/Main Login Screen? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 12:09 PM PST Ever since I got the most recent update for Windows 10 I have been having all sorts of issues with my device. I have Windows Hello on my laptop yet when I do the initial login screen after waking from sleep mode or turning the device on, sometimes I just press a key and rush to put in the passcode (sometimes it is more convenient). After this last FORCED update, the keyboard does not work at all during those logins so if the windows hello doesn't detect me I have to restart. Outside of the login it works fine. I have also noticed some suspicious stuff with my camera which may just be a virus, although it started immediately after I updated automatically (again, fuck these automatic updates). This only happened for one day and when I restarted the device and disconnected from internet (reconnected soon after) it went away, but I had the camera light come on for about 10 seconds intermittently (every hour or so) a few nights ago without me using it. May be some bug with the new update related to the Windows Hello issue or maybe I have a virus despite my stringent security, not really sure on that one. Anyone have solutions for that keyboard problem, and advice on making sure I'm not being watched by the camera? [link] [comments] |
