Should the motherboard be hot to the touch near the RAM when turned off?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:08 PM PDT

So I was booting up my PC for game time when suddenly it shut down and refused to turn back on. I gave it an hour, thinking that something may have overheat, and still nothing. I popped the case open, felt around and noticed the hot spot. Like, can't even keep my finger there for more than a second hot. And its directly to the right of the RAM. Nowhere else is that hot though. I have an OMEN 870-224, it's close to two years old, I transferred it to a new case and added a Corsair Vengeance LPX 8gb stick as well as a 1 TB SSD last year.

I'm thinking my motherboard may have been fried.

    Cloning issues

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 12:37 PM PDT

I'm having some trouble cloning a hard drive. I have a 500gb source trying to clone to a 240gb ssd target.

So I shrunk the windows data partition on the target and copied using Clonezilla each partition over to the target. When it was done, everytime I boot up it shows that there is no boot device but when I boot in to a live cd of Linux I can see the windows data. I made sure to copy the boot partition. What did I miss?

My pc doesn’t boot up, what can i do?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 09:53 AM PDT

    This is the pc.

Yesterday everything was working fine, today it's not even starting up. It is connected to power, i can even see a led under the ethernet port. Monitor/cables work. I've already tried it on a different outlet with everything unplugged. Reseating components didn't help. The motherboard doesn't have any speaker so no beep codes. Resetting CMOS didn't help either.

HDD Failed, any way to see past file directories?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:37 PM PDT

I recently had a HDD fail, two clicks then a power down. the user isn't too concerned about the data on the drive as they forgot what was on it.

From research, unless the user wants to spend money of data recovery, there isn't any way to save the HDD or the data.

They would however like to know the names of the folders that were stored in the root of the drive.

I originally thought this was impossible but thought there might be a way that Windows might be aware of past file directories.

Say if it was associated with G:\, there may be a text file containing a list of some of the folders that were located there.

For instance, opening up a program that used to exist on the HDD would show 'Cannot Load G:\Programs\Photoshop etc'

    Anyone have any ideas?

    firmware/bios virus? or paranoia?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 04:14 PM PDT

so yesterday i went to the dark web for the first time for educational purposes i didn't buy or download anything the only thing i did was open like 3 different links for like fake IDs(which i dont need as im 25) or something on one of the hidden wikis just to see what its like and like I said i didn't download or install anything just opened the links and didn't even click anything else on the 3 web pages i opened just the links to open the 3 different web pages and i had a vpn on which i have on 24/7 and i used tor to access onion links and then i closed tor when i was done now the weird thing is after i closed tor task manager was being weird like ghosting and icons in task manager wouldn't show for a sec so out of paranoia i scanned for viruses with malwharebytes and kaspersky and it showed nothing and then i shut down my computer and got a usb and put a windows 10 1903 iso on it then cleaned my disks with disk part and did a clean install of windows, now i did it 3 times but the first two after i was done with my programs and drivers some programs would hang and not even start up like steam or chrome and some of the rgb software and the 3rd time i did a clean install of windows it was through a different usb with the media creation tool thinking i maybe had a corrupt iso installation and after installing everything some boots and restarts it would hang and others not and this time only two software one being iCUE and sound blaster connect two so is it possible i still may have a virus even tho i did 3 clean installs and didn't download or install anything from the dark web just viewed the pages? or am i being extra paranoid and have nothing? because other than those two programs there is no other weird activity and everything else works fine and neither malwharebytes or kaspersky picked up anything during the 3 installs either. Also programs have hung on me before in the past but not to this extent in a row. I also have newer specs like the asus z370e and an i7 8700k.

    Thank you!
