    Battery permanent failure

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:03 PM PDT

My Dell Inspiron 7559 started popping up this "your battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced" error about a month ago, however I did the Dell system checks and it showed the battery was healthy. Then I didn't mind it for a week or so, until the error started to pop up every time I unplug it, turned it off and turn it on again. So I was under the impression that the battery has some problems, and purchased a battery online to replace it on my own.

The first two weeks with the battery replaced everything went well, however the same error starts to pop up today with the new battery installed. And again by system check the battery is healthy. So could this be caused by some other problems? I have been using this laptop for around five years now, could the age also be a likely cause for the problem? I use the laptop to play games and do assignments mostly, and if it was for assignments the battery usually lasts for two hours and a half without plugged in.

I'm not very knowledgeable on laptops, so I would be grateful for anyone offering suggestions, and should I purchase a new laptop or maybe could still carry on a bit with this one?

    Thanks in advance!

Is it worth upgrading / will it help

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:33 PM PDT

I have an Acer Aspire E 15 E5-512-60R2 Everything in it should be the "default hardware" except the RAM, because I had installed Two 8GB sticks I had lying around.

It is pretty slow even after the RAM upgrade and now I am thinking about putting a new Harddrive in it because the current one seems pretty slow, Task manager always reports 98-100% usage while idle.

    (Current Harddrive TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100)

I will probably buy an HHD because it is just for occasional use of Microsoft office or maybe some very light gaming while traveling (some older games like Fallout). I am not quite sure if an SSD will "keep the data" if I just let it sit somewhere for weeks without use and therefore I will buy a less terrible than current HDD.

Now I am not sure if upgrading the Harddrive will make it any faster. It seems reasonable to me that it will, but the CPU (AMD A6-6310 APU) also seems very overwhelmed by idling

Is a backpack or a messenger bag “safer” for a laptop? (Petty concerns)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:29 PM PDT

For a long time a carried my laptop in a backstop with a semi protective sleeve. Recently got a new laptop that I'm trying to take very good care of.

I could either get a backpack with a dedicated sleeve that also allows me to keep my camera, or a messenger bag that is extremely snug. The only reason I ask this is that I wonder which one is more prone to bouncing around (via against my back or my side). Also not sure how bad it is for a laptop to be flush against your back in a (padded) laptop backpack.

    Should I get this laptop?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 08:02 AM PDT

Canadian here who might be starting a new job soon. I need something I can take notes on, carry around easily, and do research (using Chrome, word documents, etc). I just want a computer that won't lag and fight me. But I won't be doing anything heavy duty.

    Will this thing run poorly?

Reliable Lightweight laptop for 3d work?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 11:14 AM PDT

Hi! First post on Reddit. Was hoping you guys and gals can help me with suggestions.

I'm a Character Artist in the game industry, with the need to go mobile. I will heavily use zbrush and mudbox for hi-rez (hi-polygon) sculpts, Maya for hard surface modelling, and substance painter and/or Mari for texturing, and unreal engine for presentation purposes. I'll be trying to push for high end models in real-time.

Essentially (I THINK- I'm not tech savvy) my needs are a gaming machine (need fast cpu for zbrush, lots of ram, and a decent gpu, preferably RTX so I can have models presented more realistically inside UE4).

I have looked at the aero 15, msi gs65, and razerblade 15, and debating between these 3 (which are gaming laptops essentially) OR possible other options (not sure if I need a workstation laptop????). Again, i'm not tech savvy, so i am hesitant diving into any of these 3 because of known issues (razerblade battery bloat, aero driver issues, msi least reliable chassis and hard to access ram slots).

I plan to bring this on a trip to the Phillipines (I'm from Canada), but I will try not to use it in the country-side heat, just mainly in hotels with AC. Basically I need it to be reliable in terms of longevity and stand being brought around in backpack in some hot weather. I do want it to be less than 5 lbs as well, if possible.

    Any suggestions will help! :)

    Launch windows from HDD?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 09:25 AM PDT

    Hello

I just ordered a better SSD (M.2 NVMe PCle) for my laptop. The current M.2 inside is my boot drive, this is the one I'm replacing. Can I clone my current SSD to my HDD, boot from that HDD and then clone to the new SSD? Or what are the alternatives?

    Kind regards

    Best Ultrabook/Notebook

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 08:39 AM PDT

So I've been searching for months for a good ultrabook or thin and light laptop that's around the $1000 mark, and I can't decide which one to buy, so I want to know your guys' recommendation.

Laptops I've considered: -Asus zenbook 13 UX333 -Lenovo ideapad 730s -Lenovo ideapad s940 -Mi Notebook air -razer blade stealth -Dell XPS 13

What I'm looking for is: -Good battery life -i7 CPU -13.3" screen -preferably not a glossy screen -good build quality -nice design (not gaming laptop designs)

What I don't want: -I don't want it to be a touch screen -camera on the bottom

And if I'm too picky on a laptop and there is no such thing as that kinda laptop, I would like to hear your suggestions of good ultra books, pls no MacBooks

    +/- $1200 College laptop

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 07:50 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: +/- $1200, The Netherlands

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer good battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you? Just not too heavy. Thickness doesn't matter that much, just so it's easy to put in a bag or something.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux The latest version of Windows (Windows 10)

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A Screen size preferably between 13 and 15 inch.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If anything, just some (really) light gaming. It will be mostly for College.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Probably some older stuff, like Spore or even older games I have. FPS 60 is fine to me.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I definitely need reliable build quality because I will be bringing it everywhere. I hate touchpads, will mostly use a mouse.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So, I have looked around for a bit, and the things I found so far are Lenovo Thinkpad and HP Spectre, but I haven't looked into the above listed things I want in these laptops. I just want a really smooth running laptop.

    Dead USB ports

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 07:46 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have a 6 year-old Acer Aspire. A few years ago an unfortunate accident damaged my screen resulting in what was a small dead corner a VGA port which was fine but after a while the keyboard and touchpad also died which means I have to use an external K/M. Other than that what remains of the laptop is functional.

I have 3 USB ports (1 blue one on left, 2 black on right) but since last week the 2 ports on the right side have been very glitchy. Sometimes it would work fine, then the keyboard LEDs would be on but keyboard unresponsive but would be fine again after a reboot, sometimes no power at all for a few days...

My questions are as follows: 1. How do I, if it is even possoble, diagnose/fix the power problem at an efficient cost? 2. Is the broken screen somehow causing this or is it completely unrelated? 3. If I get a USB hub/splitter on the remaining port, will it be able to handle the charge for 3 devices? And what would be a recommended device?

I apologize if I haven't provided the right information, I'm not an expert but would very much like to keep this poor laptop in use for at least another year. Thanks for any help!

How configurable is the trackpad on the Lenovo IdeaPad 330s? (Ryzen model from walmart)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 07:46 AM PDT

I'm hoping it can do two-finger scrolling and two-finger tap for middle mouse button.
My current Lenovo can do this but I know they use different trackpad hardware/drivers/software.

    Replace Laptop Motherboard

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 07:38 AM PDT

So guys, I have a Acer Aspire 3 with 4 gb DDR4 ram, 1TB SSD, AMD Ryzen 7 2700U with RX Vega graphics and a Radeon 535/AMD Vega 10 graphics but you know it's pretty midrange and can't handle the latest games so I had this crazy idea that what if I replace my laptop's motherboard since I cannot replace my GPU since it's embedded in my laptop's motherboard so I wanna hear your thoughts about it? If it is legal to do or not and would it damage my laptop?

Best gaming laptop for below $1069 aud?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:35 AM PDT

So I've just got my old hp computer refunded for the price above ^ and so I've been looking for the best possible gaming laptop I can get with this money alone and perhaps a bit more if I have to.

I'd be using it mainly for editing videos, not so much for playing games as I use my PS4, but for games like LoL, a good FPS and graphics would be great.

P.S. I'm a noob with pc specs so I'd love some info and description ty xx

Looking at a 2in1 laptop such as the surface for uni

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 04:06 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    UK - £500gbp

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Would like a 2 in 1 as I use one note a lot. I take all my notes in OneNote, and i'm enjoying the "ink to math" feature, where you write some equations with the pen and then digitise it to the math equation - however i'm doing this with a mouse which is super cumbersome, hence requesting a tablet like PC.

I like the high res screens offered by the surface book

I've started a data science degree, and we do week long 9am-6pm workshops using python, data visualisation, programming etc.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

I'm planning to use the tablet pc a lot on my 3 hour daily commute, so portability is huge.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Win 10

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

~13inch due to using on public transport (train / bus)

I like the high res screens offered by the surface book e.g. res size like 3000*2000

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    Uni suggested i5, 8gb RAM.

Used for programming, power BI, and if light gaming, then classic WoW / Sims 4.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

light gaming, then classic WoW / Sims 4. Have dedicated desktop PC anyway for gaming.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Touch screen and maybe a low end dedicated GPU

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Been told I need a minimum of i5, 8gb laptop. Would a (preowned) surface pro / surface book be suitable? My budget is ~£500GBP, probably looking to buy on ebay.

    Laptop GPU equivalents

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 03:49 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I'm shopping for a laptop right now that will mostly be used as a couch surfer, however, I also like to play Magic: Arena. It has pretty low spec requirements, but I'd like to at least hit the recommended hardware of a GTX 560. Of course, that's not a laptop GPU, and I'm struggling to find information about what GPU would give me equivalent power in a laptop.

I know the 560 is a pretty old GPU, so I assume many laptop GPUs could handle the same workload these days, but does anyone have a ballpark idea of which NVidia, AMD, or Intel graphics cards would match its performance?

    Thanks!
