Introducing ARAW: An Android Reddit API Wrapper

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:09 PM PDT

    Hi,

I present to you ARAW or Android Reddit Api Wrapper, written for the android platform using Kotlin, Moshi, Retrofit, OkHttp.

I started working on it for a pet project, since JRAW was no longer updated, and I decided to polish it and publish it so others can take advance of it.

It requires the use of Java 8, but so does the new androidx libraries, so I don't think it's going to be a big deal for most.

I'm going to continue to update it, if you want to jump onboard.

    Tell me what you think.

You can look at it here (it has a sample app):

How do you keep up with Android Development technologies?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:39 PM PDT

It feels like Android development, as with other tech stacks, is constantly evolving (which is good as things are always improving).

Android development has gone from MVC to MVP to MVVM to MVI, architecturally. We have LiveData vs RxJava. Architecture Components which includes MVVM, Room, LiveData, etc. We've now got MvRx which combines Epoxy and the MVI pattern. RxBinding. Dagger 2. I mean I can go on and on.

My question is, how do YOU keep up with all the trends?

The way I try to: I follow a lot of engineering accounts from big name companies like Spotify, Netflix, Uber, etc. I also have a lot of their engineering blogs bookmarked. And, I'm subscribed to some AndroidDev podcasts such as, Lyft Mobile, Facebook Mobile, and Fragmented. However, this is information overload and it's hard to keep up with it all.

I'm curious how other people keep up with all of this.

    Cheers!

Looking for a good Android app shielding tools

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 12:25 PM PDT

Curious to know what tools Android developers are using to shield their apps from reverse engineering hacks. Ideal functionalities would include obfuscation, anti-tampering and device attestation checks. I found a tool called ProtectMyApp by Verimatrix but I'd like to compare it to a few other options. I will share my findings on Reddit once my evaluations are complete. Thx!

Looking for examples of no-gui games.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 06:51 AM PDT

I want to create an game that does not have graphics. I mean it will have lists, buttons, etc, ui like in an app. I am inspired by old school text-based browser games, like this one for example (http://img.scrolls.combats.com/ph/1165403878/src/JQD0aIwZggt2vxKuw49wJrzfHCVQgO0SgLOEVImwQ.jpg)

I still would like to show some creativity, so im looking for existing android games with similar designs. Does anyone know of such?

    Questions regarding Android Verified Boot

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:37 PM PDT

    Hello!

I'm very interested in using custom kernel on my smartphone, but since new android phones use verified boot, it is a slightly harder task. I know that magisk installs "empty" vbmeta and removes signature from boot, but I'd like to figure out a way to make it without magisk installation. So, the questions are:

    • Is that "empty" vbmeta generic? If not, how do I make/edit one? I tried to compare vbmeta from lineage (patched) and stock (both for another device) with avbtool, but I could not find what makes vbmeta to disable verification on boot.

    • Is it really required to remove signature on boot?

    • If so, how to remove signature on boot?

    Recommendations for a payout API/service?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 10:42 AM PDT

I need a way to send payments to users at a relatively small scale. Less than 100 users per week, and less than $2000 per user. I'm currently doing it by writing checks, but that's a security risk and inconvenience.

These users aren't tech savvy, so ideally they wouldn't need to use an app to retrieve their payments, especially if that app is only available in English.

I like the way Postmates, Door Dash, etc gives users a credit card for payments, but I don't know how to do that, and whether it'd be cost effective.

I've used Stripe in the past for unrelated projects, but never for payouts, so idk if that's good or what. Basically just looking for some reviews from people since it's pretty much impossible to find that on google nowadays.

I'm about to purchase a PlayStore license... anything I should know?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 02:50 PM PDT

I'm about to get a Google PlayStore license so I can publish my apps to the PlayStore. Are there any thing I need to know before going ahead to make the purchase? If you've successfully published a Flutter app for Android, I'd love to hear your experiences.

Also, I'm thinking of creating a secondary mail to use rather than my current primary email address, are there any caveats to this?

    Thanks a lot...♥️

How do you determine the price of a freelance work?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 04:04 AM PDT

If you were asked to do something you never have, how would you estimate how long it would take? I've recently been asked to develop an app to interface with a specific device, and they are asking for an estimated price for it. I have no idea how long it will take. Have you ever made such apps? How do you calculate development time for such cases?

The never ending cycle of app update..

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 11:26 AM PDT

The never ending cycle of app update..

So.. with the new changes to how much time it'll take to update the apps, I've been in sort of endless loop of updates because I'm not able to get the latest update approved in time.

    Here's what happens:

    1. I worked on a new feature in the app, but didn't add it in the app, but fixed some bugs and submitted update on 22nd October. Update wasn't approved till 31st October.
    2. By then, the new feature I worked on was already done, so I said f-it, and submitted an update with that new feature on 31st October.
    3. Waited another day, but by that time I came across a bug in the new feature, and had to submit another update to fix it.
    4. Waited another day, but by that time I came across another bug, and submitted another update to fix it.

So by the time they approve my app update, there's something I fix, and the waiting period resets.

Here's how the release history looks:

    Release history

Sorry I forgot to add October 22 update in there.

But I'm blank as to how I should manage my updates? Am I supposed to stop development when the update is submitted? If you know that there's some bug which you can fix in the app before it gets approved, wouldn't you submit an update with fix?

Like if there was some update which was approved in time, and even if it contained some bug, I'd have totally let it slip without worrying about it and would've fixed it in the next big update, but now that I know there's a bug, and the update hasn't been approved, I'm trapped in this loop. And I fear I might find some bug tomorrow and I'll have to do this again, resetting the timer.

How would you deal with this? I know this is partially my fault, but this update timing is driving me crazy because I know once this update gets approved, I'll have to wait another 7-8-10-12 days to get update with the fix approved, so submitting a bug-free update when the bugs are found seems better than having to wait 7-12 days waiting.

How to handle IME events like a pro.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 09:21 AM PDT

    Hello guys,

I'm new to Android and started to make a messaging app, there is one things that I'm struggling to find a solution for a while. I noticed that many messaging app, chat client that can handle keyboard/emojies/ attachments sheet transition smoothly: Google's Messages, Slack, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger. But I could not find a way to completely apply this to my messaging app without a lot of issues.

When IME open, I let it push application layout up. then user try to open attach sheet, IME is hidden and whole layout moving down, then when attach sheet fragment (which positioned at the bottom of screen) is attached, it's moving up again.

In other applications, they are able to hold the upper fragment stay still.

This is what I have until now:

    - IME height: I can gather this from window insets change (correct ...?)

    - Other apps are not drawing below IME, at least for the first time open IME, and let IME resize application window sizes.

    - I tried to create custom view to wrap upper layouts and give it fixed height during onMeasure if IME/AttachSheet is changing. But this causes a lot of issues for inner views in upper layout since they are quite complicated nest.

Could bottom sheet be a solution in this case?

I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks for reading.

My app gets negative reviews because for some features you have to buy the premium version. What can I do?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 02:55 AM PDT

I feel lost. I mostly get positive reviews but occasionally get these negative feedbacks and it affects my statistics really badly.

My app has lots of free functionalities and it's completely usable with the free version, so it's not like I'm trying to force users to pay. I also checked my competitors and they are way more paywalled, I offer more functionality for free than they do, but they still don't get these negative reviews. The fact that some features are premium is written in the description and when the user first opens the app, a message pops up and informs them about it just to avoid future confusion, so it's not deceptive. Maybe I shouldn't inform users about it so early?

It's just really disheartening that after 1 year of hard work I get these 1 star reviews from people who are too cheap to pay that optional 2$ for the premium version.

    How to learn Android NDK?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 04:26 AM PDT

I have 2 years on Android experience. I consider myself below average programmer. I want to learn Android NDK but could not find any courses on Udemy or Udacity for it. I find difficult to understand the docs. Any good video reference for learning Android NDK

What's the best way to get started to learn android development for a complete beginner?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:12 AM PDT

Some have suggested Udacity and Udemy courses. Udacity ones look nice and they are made by Google, so I have been thinking of going for it.

And should I learn native app development (Java/Kotlin) or go for something like Flutter?

I prefer learning from videos rather than a book, but will pick up books if they are good.

My goal is to become a good enough app developer so that I can develop apps like Instagram, Netflix or YouTube.

My alarm app stopped working on android 10 due to new Google's stupid background limitations. How to fix it?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:40 PM PDT

Android 10 brought another batch of pointless limitations:

    https://developer.android.com/guide/components/activities/background-starts

Now you cant launch an activity from background service.

This completely breaks my alarm app, which allows users to set simple alarms. I do not want to display notification - thats not how alarms are supposed to work. I want and I need an regular activity, playing regular sound - a normal, full functioning alarm.

Is there a way how to achieve this?

I found in documentations there are couple exceptions when we can launch activity from background:

The app has been granted the SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW permission by the user.

This doesnt work even if I add it in manifest. Anybody knows why?

The app receives a notification PendingIntent from the system. In the case of pending intents for services and broadcast receivers, the app can start activities for a few seconds after the pending intent is sent.

I do not understand this one. What kind of system PendingIntent?
