AUR-missing dependencies "Exist in filesystem" so can't install - trying to install grass gis Posted: 04 Nov 2019 07:31 AM PST Hello, When I try to install any of these independently from the AUR, I get a list of 50+ files (...) "exists in filesystem." On manjaro forums and arch wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman#"Failed_to_commit_transaction_(conflicting_files)"_error%22_error)) I found some things, but not that helpful. So what I understand is that these files already exist, so why is this a missing dependency?? I checked their ownership via pacman -Qo which results in "no package owns (...)". If I follow arch wiki, I would then delete these files and reinstall. But manually do this for 3 times 50+ files?! I also used pacreport --unowned-files and no such things as python-gdal listed there. So I don't have a lot of experience with packages in AUR so if anyone has insights, that would be nice! Thanks a lot [link] [comments] |

What am I doing trying to learn Linux Posted: 04 Nov 2019 09:03 AM PST You see, last week I got pretty excited about learning Python and learning to use linux. I read that it's useful to know in bio research, plus they're useful to know if you want to tinker with Raspberry pi which seems cool to me. But now that I've cleaned out my computer in preparation for installing Linux in a dual-boot system with Windows, I've started questioning if I'm just wasting my time. You see, my end goal is medical school. I want to be a doctor. Maybe my time would be better spent learning philosophy, French, or reading. I do like all those things. But then I think, in all likely hood I will just start getting into those things then the same thing will happen: I will lose motivation. Part of why I feel like this may be because I need to be looking for a job. Obviously, that is important. I hate my current job and need to quit and find better work. Maybe that is what's causing me to be so indecisive about how I'm spending time. I feel guilty for wanting to distract myself with hobbies instead of submitting more job applications. Now that I write this all out, that might be exactly why. Perhaps I should have wrote this all down in my journal hah. Anyways, any thoughts about how rewarding your linux journey has been would be nice to hear. [link] [comments] |

Dual Boot with Linux installed first Posted: 04 Nov 2019 06:42 AM PST Hey, so I'm pretty new to Linux, but I decided to go with it since I started uni not too long ago. Now, I've read some articles with instructions on how to dual-boot, but pretty much every article said something along the lines of 'It's recommended to dual boot with Windows installed first.' and didn't go into further detail on how to dual boot with Linux installed first. I'm using Pop_OS 19.10, if that changed anything. Any advice will be very much appreciated. :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:33 PM PST I'm playing around with Linux since a few months on my secondary Laptop to test it out. Since a few days i run the Manjaro GNOME Version and i like it so far. In the next weeks i'll install Linux on my main work-laptop aswell and i'm debating about using Manjaro again or Pop! OS as my Distribution of choice. I know Manjaro is more 'cutting edge' because it's built on arch, but is that the only real difference compared to Pop! OS? Is Pop OS more 'stable', since it has longer update-cycles or does that not matter? I searched online for some answer, but couldn't really find anything that shows an easy overview of the pros/cons of using either of those. Thanks in advance for helping a Linuxnoob! :-) [link] [comments] |
How to compile android app and run without virtaulbox or any emulator Posted: 04 Nov 2019 09:39 AM PST Hello everyone, As the title says I want to compile a android app .apk and not rely on any other software such as anbox or vm . [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 09:05 AM PST I am working through "The Perfect Media Server 2017" guide and ran into this error when mounting a few non-empty NTFS and exFAT external hard drives. Any advice how to fix? [link] [comments] |
Messed up while trying to move a partition Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:54 PM PST So I did an oopsie while trying to move a partition. It was my fault, I got impatient and made a mistake. Now the partition is still there but it's shown as empty and I can't mount it. I'm guessing my data is still there somewhere but I don't know how to access it. Is there a simple file recovery app that can help me recover the few files from the lost partition I actually need? Preferably something easy to use with a GUI because I don't have the time or patience at the moment to fiddle around with the CLI. [link] [comments] |
[elementaryOS 5] Decrease OS loading time after boot Posted: 04 Nov 2019 05:30 AM PST When I boot my eOS, it boots, there is text flowing saying that everything is ok (normally its eOS logo, but I prefer terminal) and then I wait 15-30 seconds on black screen, then mouse cursor shows up for 5-15 seconds and then my desktop shows up. For me it's too much waiting. Sometimes desktop wont show up until I press power button. I have only 2 services starting at boot. How can I speed up this process? My specs: GPU: Intel HD 4400 (I plan on buying RX 570) CPU: Intel Core i3-4130 3.4 GHz RAM: 8 GB [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:51 AM PST Newbie Hey I'm new to coding relatively speaking.I do must of my coding in python and c+ and a little java. Cannot update Kvantum Theme Engine Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:42 AM PST I am using 0.11.2 version for a while and today I checked the GitHub page for the updated version - which was 0.12.2. I followed the installation file instructions and it was a success, so I restarted my PC but it still shows as 0.11.2 version. Did this process twice to make sure I was not doing anything wrong but no luck. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:13 AM PST Hi all, I am very new and inexperienced in Linux scripting and command line. I am currently writing a script which does the following:
Now that the problem is clear, here is my current solution which only halfway works. The makeDirectories and unzipFiles functions work but I have been struggling with getting the movingFiles function to work properly. Due to movingFiles not working I am unsure if permissions is working or tailLastTwo is working Keep in mind that the solution should be as simple as possible as I am only doing an introductory course to Linux. The .zip file and the .sh file are both in the /Downloads directory. Any help is greatly appreciated, especially with moving the files from the folder to the other folders. Thank you in advance. If any more info is needed I will gladly answer as soon as I can. [link] [comments] |
MATLAB, Gstreamer and video codecs Posted: 04 Nov 2019 09:15 AM PST Hello, I'm trying to get my MATLAB installation on Linux Mint to support MPEG-4 videos. According to https://de.mathworks.com/help/matlab/import_export/supported-video-file-formats.html I need to make sure my gstreamer supports it. From what I can tell I have gstreamer set up with the right codecs, but MATLAB only shows the default codecs that are always supported. How can I get this to work? [link] [comments] |

Getting RTL8723DE bluetooth and wifi working at the same time Posted: 04 Nov 2019 07:39 AM PST For the last week or so I've been using Pop!_OS 19.10 as my first distro on my laptop which has a rtl8723de as it's wifi and bluetooth card. Out of the box, the card is not supported and I've had to install the drivers to get it working. Wifi works perfectly but bluetooth is not working in any way. Any tips? [link] [comments] |

Can't boot liveusb on old Win7 PC Posted: 03 Nov 2019 09:29 PM PST I'm wanting to try Linux on an old HP PC that has Win7 on it. I boot it into the BIOS, and go to the booting part of it, looking at the booting priority section. It in, it only has 4 sections for booting: HDD, CD/DVD, floppydisk and network. Even though the LiveUSB is plugged in there is virtually no option or recognition to boot from the LiveUSB. I've tried multiple USB ports and it doesn't detect it from either. What can I do to install Linux on this system? [link] [comments] |

Laptop doesn‘t go into sleep mode properly Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:37 AM PST Hey, I'm using Pop_OS 19.04 on a T490 and sometimes it seems to not enter the sleep mode properly. When I went to bed yesterday, it had 80% battery left, when I woke up today the battery was depleted, which normally shouldnt be the case... But it's just sometimes the case. Any ideas for a fix? KeePass2 crashes whenever I type long entries on the "Notes" field Posted: 03 Nov 2019 09:23 PM PST Hi, This is kind of a cross-post, just wanted to hear your ideas. I have yet to run tests. -- I don't do it often (stated in the Subject), but it crashes and loses everything that's not saved. Before, the Notes field would freeze as I typed (wasn't a biggie). I would just need to click OK and then re-open the database entry in question, and then it would display everything I typed, including those past the freeze. My backup solution goes like this: All in all, I have 3 KDBX databases in each of my PCs: in Dropbox (my main and daily folder), in a second "Cloud Server 2", and in a local folder. (Dropbox is my main folder because I have 2 PCs but can not manage to use Syncthing or other self-hosted solutions.) Whenever I update and save my main database in Dropbox, the ones in Cloud Server 2 and in the local folder automatically sync with it. This is "sync by triggers," a feature of KeePass2. The one in the local folder goes to my external backup devices. I've set up my triggers exactly by the procedure in their example here. I don't want to use KeePassXC because it does not have the "sync by triggers" feature. It's been keeping me from jumping ship. On Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon. Downloaded KeePass2 from the Software Manager and is being updated through jtaylor's PPA. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Many issues with an Ubuntu VPS, see list in post Posted: 03 Nov 2019 01:16 PM PST First issue: "To many files open": So far, I have attempted to use this tutorial to fix this issue using *, user, and thedeafcreeper, and so far they have all lead into the second issue I'm having; VNC Grey/black checker pattern with black x crosshair: Whenever I attempt to fix "To many files open" it results in VNC no longer working and spamming "Buffer overflow detected" in the terminal. As soon as I undo the steps to fix "To many files open" vnc starts working again, however after starting the server I run on the VPS the "To many files" issue pops back up. Another issue I have run into is not being able to open any non default Gnome programs, such as Visual Studio Code. I can still open programs like the File explorer, Firefox, and the default Terminal. The VPS is currently running Ubuntu 18.04.3 XFCE. Help with one or more of these issues (preferable the top two at the very least) would be appreciated. If Im just cursed the VPS provider does allow free windows installs, altho I would prefer to stick with Ubuntu so that I don't have to re-setup everything. [link] [comments] |
