As many of you here on r/HomeNetworking know my video series about Networking Theory has been posted on multiple occasions and has become somewhat popular. I do now finally have the time to continue the series, so I would like to ask thoese who watch my videos on what kind of direction I should move the series in. I'm personally thinking about either Networking Hardware or in-depth Network Security. I would like to hear what you think and if you got a third direction whish you would like to see do also feel free to share it.

To does who do not know what this is all about, you can find the series below and maybe opt in on the direction this series should move afterwards.

iPhone 8+ no longer working well with previously solid network.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:15 AM PST

I'm at my wit's end here, about to start replacing hardware.

My wife and I bought a house this summer. At our old place, we had a fiber line, which went into my Ubiquiti Edgerouter, into one of their access points.

When we moved, I unplugged it, brought it to the new house, plugged it in (same town, same isp) and now my wife's iPhone 8+ is constantly dropping wifi. It only does it on this WiFi network. Her phone is fine at work, at friends' houses, businesses, etc. Only her phone is having trouble. My phone, my Xbox one, all our various smarthome crap, all work fine.

Her phone shows a strong signal, and just.. stops working with wifi. The only way to fix it is to turn off her wifi, and turn it back on. Then it'll work for another five minutes. Resetting the network gear does not help.

Location in our home doesn't seem to matter. 5 feet away, clear line of sight, ten feet, upstairs, backyard, doesn't seem to matter at all. Strong signal, quickly unusable.

As I said before, no other devices are having any problems whatsoever.

When she got a security update in.. July? That seemed to fix the issue for a week or so. Then right back to not working well again.

I can probably convince her to wipe her phone, but only if the only other option is to spend a couple hundred bucks on new network hardware.

Anyone have any ideas at all?

    Poe cameras need protection

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:10 PM PST

    Thoughts on this?

    http://www.l-com.com/tabbeditem_mobi.aspx?id=64596

Installing ubiquiti gear, dahua cameras, stp solid, shielded patch panel. Do I add a rack mount surge protector? I know it's only as good as the low impedance ground path I provide, but if it's between this or nothing will it be worth it?

ISP Gave me list of modems ... not sure which to choose?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 01:06 PM PST

So I got a free speed increase recently and unfortunately I can not utilize that speed unless I upgrade my modem, due to some kind of network jargon the rep explained to me.

Anyhoo, they emailed me a list of modems I can purchase (from them or elsewhere), but gave absolutely zero context on which may be right for me.

I am on a 250Mbps plan and I am looking to get whichever modem will have the greatest chance of being forward compatible for any potential future upgrades.

    ARRIS TG2472G (TS9.1.103U)
    Hitron CDA3-20 (6.1.3.31)
    Hitron CDA3-35 (6.1.3.31)
    Hitron CGNM-3550 (4.5.11.8)
    SmartRG SR808ac (1.0.0.14)
    Technicolor TC4350 (50041.1.19.0)
    Technicolor DPC3848V (dpc3800-v303r2042162-160620a.p7b)

Right now I have a TC4300, which does support the speed but not the network infrastructure or some such. *shrug*

Thank you for any help given!

    Hotspot, phone or dedicated?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 01:04 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

Curious... Nowadays... Is there any difference between using your iPhone X as a hotspot vs. a dedicated hotspot device?

Specifically, will the dedicated hotspot device typically allow connecting more devices than using your iPhone X as a hotspot?

Will there be any difference with speed using phone vs dedicated hotspot?

Thanks so much for the feedback.

Router is dying, I know little, what's the best attainable bang for reasonable bucks?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 03:27 PM PST

So my Netgear r8000 router, which I foolishly bought upon release, is dying. Latency has gotten really inconsistent, one of two 5GHz radios is super wonky to connect to with any device, and even with the computer connected to the router with cat 6 cable the r8000 has never really delivered decent throughput. I'll lay out what I am working with below:

    • 1,300 squarefoot single level house with drywall and 2x4 interior wall construction.
    • centrally located, wall mounted router and i would like to keep it this way.
    • (2) PCs with Asus PCE-AC88u wifi adapters
    • Two laptops with intel ac9260 wifi adapters
    • A wired PC via Cat6 shielded cable that is 6ft long
    • 2 TVs with wifi streaming
    • A half dozen android devices to connect at most.
    • 1 Gigabit ISP connection that consistently delivers 1Gbps if a device is wired to it's ethernet port... except the R8000

Signal strength has always been good. Spectrum in the neighborhood is uncluttered. Both Asus wifi card machines see 1.1Gbps connection speeds in the Wi-Fi status window, the laptops it varies on where they are at but it is always solid. Throughput has always been disappointing with this router and I am happy it is dying. When I wire any device to the modem's ethernet port, I'll see nVidia's drivers download in excess of 100 megabytes per second. If the r8000 is serving up the data wired or wirelessly holding 30 megabytes per second download rate was rare. To me, this drop off seemed extreme but I previously had only 200Mbps from the ISP and have had 1Gbps only for the past two years. File transfers across the network, rarely sustained more than 70 megabytes per second. I have no mechanical drives in service fwiw and that, too, seemed odd given the connection speeds Windows reports and it didn't really matter if I was going wireless to wireless or wired to wireless. Always disappointingly slow.

So, I transfer large files across the network on the semi regular and otherwise would just like speedier throughput than what I experienced with the Netgear r8000. What do you suggest?

Edit: I can't believe i didn't mention this initially but I have both reset the router to factory settings and reflashed it. After both diagnostic steps it immediately behaves in the problematic fashion described

PLEASE HELP! - WIFI ROUTER QUESTION - URGENT

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:07 PM PST

    Hi,

A family member who no longer lives in our home came over and mentioned something about changing the wifi password for my mom. I find this odd.

Could she be doing something to try to track data through our wifi router? It is a FIOS router.

Could she be trying to become the wifi admin and track?

Do FIOS routers have web history saved?

Would it be legal for her to do such a thing without consent?

Also, I have tried to log into the wifi router using the router number but the site it takes me to is not secure and I do not feel comfortable entering the password.

    PLEASE HELP!

    Ethernet Cables Go Bad?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:02 PM PST

I have a 6 camera security system setup where the Ethernet cable keeps going bad every 6 months or so which means I can't access the cameras remotely or get any notifications from them. As soon as the Ethernet cable is changed everything works just fine again.

Is this a normal thing for ethernet cables to go bad from constant use? Should I be using a certain kind of Ethernet cable since it's transmitting data almost 24/7?

Can ethernet to router and ethernet wifi adapter work at same time?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:59 PM PST

My bf got a security system and had to get an ethernet to wifi adapter to connect the security system to wifi via ethernet through the adapter. He also has his playstation connected directly to his modem via Ethernet but after setting up the wifi to ethernet adapter his wired connection to his playstation doesn't work anymore. The security system is working fine with the ethernet and the playstation will connect wirelessly but he doesn't know how to get both to work. Is it possible or can it only be one or the other?

DOCSIS 3.1 modem that actually works?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:25 AM PST

Looking to upgrade to Comcast 1gbe. No fiber is available in my rural area and won't be for quite some time.

Anyway, I was doing my due-diligence and looking at the top DOCSIS 3.1 modems on Amazon, but they ALL seem to suck.

    • Surfboard SB8200 is plagued with a faulty Puma chipset?
    • Netgear CM1000 constantly drops?
    • Motorola MB8600 also disconnects

Some reviewers also love each of the above. Its like 80% 5-star, and 20% 1-star. I was surprised at the disparity for EACH device.

    Anyone have any advice?

    Can you use 2 routers?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:23 PM PST

I've been having issues with our google wifi system giving packet loss. The rest of the house loves the google wifi so I don't want to get rid of it.

Is it possible to hook a separate router up, plugged into the modem, and then hook the google wifi puck up to the router plugged into the modem?

    Thanks!

Home networking problems with video games

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 10:40 AM PST

Okay guys this has been driving me crazy for months, i cant seem to figure out what the problem is and what the best set up would be for my home. Looking for pointers and any help!

So i have 350mbps internet. I have a duel band Modem/Router combo provided by my ISP. I have a fairly large house. I have two cat5e ethernet cables connected to my modem/router combo. One is hardwired to a gigabit switch in my basement that is then split and hardwired with cat6 to a 2.4ghz AP and my gaming PC. The other Ethernet cable that is connected to my modem/router combo is connected to a philips hue hub ( i have 10 philips hue light bulbs connected to it) I have 3 google home minis and 2 smart Tvs connected to my 5ghz WIFI. I have a NEST video doorbell connected to the APs wifi on the other side of the house ( that is why i have an AP because the modem/combo wont reach the front door). Last night i was playing video games with my gaming PC that is hardwired from the switch in the basement and getting very high pings of 150+ with choppy lag but my connection was still 300mbps. So i knew something wasn't right. I disconnected the AP and unplugged the POE injector. My pings went back to normal and were in the 20s again and i had no lag.

Is there something that i'm doing wrong? is there a better way to set up my home network?

    Any help is appreciated!!!

    Get Orbi or WiFi AX?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 03:02 AM PST

I am running an old TP-Link Archer C7 as my primary router with a TP-Link extender and the WiFi throughput as well as coverage is very less. My apartment is approx 3500sqft single floor and thick walls. Can't stream 4K or 1080p from Plex properly. File transfer to NAS is slow unless i sit next to the router and transfer via 5Ghz.

I almost bought Netgear Orbi AC3000 (RBK50) as a WiFi replacement but then saw the new AX standard. Should I go ahead with Orbi or get a AX8 router? I do not have a WiFi6 device at home as of now. Using iPhones, iPad, Macbook, AppleTV, SmartTV, Shield, Smart Speakers, Soundbar, etc.

What should be the right purchase for me?

Building untangle router to replace ISP's gigabit (crappy) modem. Need help selecting DAC cable to connect Dell N20KJ NIC to the MikroTik switch.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 12:56 PM PST

Noob alert! Need help with figuring out what DAC cable will work with intel FTLX8571D3BCVIT1 transceivers.

    A bit of backstory:

I just got gigabit FTTH internet last week and the modem provided is rather lacking in features (can't do NAT loopback, create my own VLANs, etc.) It's a basic modem meant for the general population that don't thinker around.

I'm new to Fiber so I don't know hardware or terminology at all. I've been on dslreports where there are multiple guides on using the right hardware to replace the modem provided by my specific ISP.

The router I'm router I'm building has the following specs:

From from N20KJ, I'll be connecting to a MikroTik RB260GSP switch, which will further connect to a ubiquiti toughswitch.

My question is about connecting the N20KJ NIC to the MikroTik switch. I'm assuming (perhaps wrongly) that I can use the Intel transceivers in both the NIC and the switch. But what kind of cable do I use? There are too many kinds of fiber cables out there and I don't understand.

Again, apologies for the noobiness and thanks for reading.

TP link router as access point

Ping is at an acceptable rate for online gaming (ps4) via powerline adapter, will it be the same all over the house?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 12:40 PM PST

    Hi peeps.

my Ping is at an acceptable rate for online gaming (ps4) via powerline adapter, will it be the same all over the house?

On the PS4 browser I did a speed test for my ping, and it was showing between 30 to 50 during most tests with the powerline adapter on same floor as the router.

We havw tested with powerlines upstairs and they work.

My question is because there is further to travel if I moved my ps4 upstairs away from the downstairs router, will the connection/ping take a massive hit, or will it have no effect.

Is the speed test site even a accurate showing ? www.speedtest.net.

Security & Updates: ASUS vs. Synology

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 04:08 PM PST

Am looking at these two options:

    ASUS AX6100 (RT-AX92U 2 Pack)

    VS.

    Synology RT2600ac 4x4 Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router with mesh Wi-Fi and MR2200ac Mesh Wi-Fi Router

The ASUS costs $392 and features 802.11ax support, WAN aggregation, tri-band for wireless backhaul, etc.

The Synology costs $340 and supports WPA3.

Both seem to be class leading in terms of supper, FW upgrades, security, etc. The Synology seems to offer a lot more add-on. I currently have a Synology NAS and remain impressed with how much support it receives.

    What do you all think?

How would I “program” my router for this new Fiber Optic service?

Explain to me like im dumb. Cuz i am.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:24 AM PST

Ok so ive finally gotten around to learning about pfsense and network switches. Easy enough to understand, just never enough time to actually do anything about it. So now, what does everyone do in each room?

Lets say you have a kid or yourself that has a playstation, computer, smart tv, and phone. Lots of stuff connected. Now 3 of those are better off hardlined, so do you run 2 lines through the wall? Or do you have a router to branch off lines? Or, would it make more sense to have your computer hardlined and a network card to run to those other items?

Will my ping/latency double if powerline adapters are connecting on separate floors. (gaming)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 02:41 PM PST

I'm at the present, on the ground floor with PS4 and my router, they are connected through powerline cables.

Getting about 30 to 50 ping which is fine.

I'm moving my ps4 upstairs soon, so the powerlines will need to connect on two separate floors.

I've checked upstairs via laptop with the adapters and the connection works, though I'm sure how it will effect latency even though they're on same main consumer unit.

Will the ping/latency double when its upstairs on ps4?

How do I connect my phone to my 5ghz channel?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 02:40 PM PST

I have 11 devices. All but two are on 2.4ghz while one Xbox and my TV are on the 5ghz channel.

I simply want my phone on the 5ghz channel but when I log into Xfinity/router settings there's no option to change it over and I can't find it on my phone. If it matters I have a Razer phone 2.

My router has 2 5ghz channels. How should I split up devices?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 02:19 PM PST

I know it's common to have both a 2.4 and 5g channel, but my router has 2.4, and 2 5g channels. I've tested the speeds on both 2.4 and 5g, and 5g wins out everywhere, so the plan is to use only 5g.

But does it matter how I split devices amongst the two 5g channels?

If it helps, we have like 5 phones, 2 main TV's (5 total), a bunch of Amazon Alexas, and 3 laptops in the house.

    Thanks for the input!!

    Using router as switch

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 01:17 PM PST

    Hey

I have purchased a new modem: bbox 3. It is connected to the WAN and creates network 1.

At this moment the old sitecom x4 n300 modem is used as a router connected to bbox 3, this creates network 2. Which means that I cannot see other computers and printers on network 1 when I am on network 2.

    This is the configuration at the moment;

    BBOX 3 - MODEM:

    IP: 172.168.1.1

    DHCP:

    DEVICES: 172.168.1.2 - 172.168.1.67

    TV: 172.168.1.68 - 172.1.127

    x4 n300 sitecom - router ip: 172.168.1.4

    RANGE: 172.168.1.x

    subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

    x4 n300 sitecom - Router

    must become a switch

    IP: 172.168.0.1

    DHCP:

    DEVICES: 172.0.100 - 172.168.0.200

    RANGE: 172,168.0.x

    subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

I would like to use the sitecom router as a switch (with wifi). And get the DHCP configuration from bbox 3 when connecting to the sitecom router.

I have already tried to change the range and switch off the DHCP server. and to change the ip from the switch to 172.168.1.2.

But this doesn't work. Could it be that there is a problem between the two ip ranges?

How can I best solve this?

    Thank you for any responses
