This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

Opinion: screen ratios should stay below 18:9

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 01:12 PM PST

I have a OnePlus 7T, and as much as I like the performance of the phone, I constantly wonder why anyone needs or would actually want a 20x9 display. This screen layout (the height being more than double it's width) makes one hand use a pain (literally) without much benefit. Plus YouTube videos and many tv shows look atrocious (you get 0.5" of black bars on each side.)

The few times I do enjoy the 20x9 is when watching feature films, but phones are obviously not the go-to method for watching movies.

Coming from an 18x9 phone, I thought that was an okay ratio despite still being a little too tall for my taste. But now with many 20x9 phones popping up I'm just asking why? With bezel-less displays phones could be shrinking into more usable 16x9 or 18x9 formats, but instead they just make the screen bigger and arguably harder to use than the equivalent phone WITH bezels.

Enable Android 10 Rules/Routines on any Rooted Pixel Phone

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 10:49 AM PST

I was able to manually enable rules in my Pixel 3 running Android 10. Not sure if this would work on other Pixel Phones(Ideally it should). You have to be rooted in order for this to work. Don't edit these if you have never edited data files below as you might end up doing something else. Below are the steps:

    1. Using any file explorer(which supports navigation in rooted folders), go to /data/data/com.google.android.settings.intelligence/shared_prefs folder.
    2. Open the file SettingsGoogleIntelligenceSharedPrefFile.xml and change all flags value containing RoutinesPrototype in its name to true. (Except for the debug one, which you probably don't need). Save the file.
    3. Now force stop Settings and Settings Suggestion app from Apps & Notifications menu.
    4. Now open Settings and search for rules. You should be able to see the rule menu over there.

    Screenshots: Settings1 Settings2 Settings3 Settings4 Settings5 Settings6

Edit: To start showing them inside settings under System, run the below commands from a terminal:

    1. First enable superuser by running "su".
    2. Then run "pm enable com.google.android.settings.intelligence/.modules.routines.impl.settings.RoutinesSettingsActivity"

    (Run the commands without quotes)

Sending calls to phone from Chrome browser

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:08 PM PST

Pardon me if this is something old, but I was tracking a package using the web version of Chrome and found something cool. When I right-clicked on the tracking number, I got an option to call the number from my S10+. Granted, it wasn't an actual number, so I did an example Google search for '9999999999' and when I right-clicked on it, I got the option again.

When I clicked on 'Send', in the URL bar on Chrome it said 'Sending call', and I immediately got a notification in my S10+ asking me to tap on it if I wanted to place the call. Thought this was cool and wanted to see if this was something new.

The option I see on chrome: https://imgur.com/a/1txHRhX

The notification I saw on my phone after tapping send: https://imgur.com/a/8JXkF3c

    Pixel 3 v Pixel 3a v Pixel 4: A stream of thoughts

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 04:39 PM PST

I couldn't find any posts comparing the Pixel 3, 3a and 4 directly (surprisingly), so I'm making this post to hopefully rectify that. I've only owned the 4 for a few days, so these thoughts are premature and will be updated if anything significant comes up.

My usage pattern is pretty boring. My most frequently-used apps are Play Music, Slack, Chrome, WhatsApp and various travel apps (American Airlines, Delta, Marriott, etc.). I also use Bluetooth extensively via Fitbit (Bluetooth LE + Bluetooth 4.2 for music controls), all sorts of cars (Bluetooth 2.1-4.0 with audio streaming via SBC codec) and my wireless earbuds (Bluetooth 5.0 with audio streaming via AptX codec). I also use the personal hotspot feature extensively; if I had to guess, I probably push

100GB/week through it. Lastly, I take a ton of photos but don't really use video much.

    Pixel 3 vs Pixel 4

The Pixel 4 feels like an upgrade.

I usually zoom in to take photos, so the telephoto lens works for me. Portrait mode on this phone is really, really good. My wife has the iPhone 11 Pro, and my selfies are better than hers. Portrait on the rear camera is impressive as well. It feels better than it was with the Pixel 3, but that might be bias talking. I am sure that her phone can take better video, though, since iPhones are better at that.

Face Unlock is INSANELY fast. It's faster than using fingerprint. This is what Face ID should have been. It might be slightly insecure (I can unlock it with my eyes closed), but it's not as insecure as the older implementation of Face Unlock was, so I'm not mad at it. Surprisingly, I don't miss Fingerprint ID at all. Based on my time using Face ID on the iPhone XS, I thought I would.

I love holding the 4 more than the 3. Loving that glass back. Reminds me of the Nexus 4 (great throwback if Google intended that). My only beef with it is that it feels fragile. This is where the 3a shone, IMO. It being plastic made it easier for me to deal with the possibility of it being dropped.

Battery life has been fine; largely on par with the Pixel 3 for my use case. I'll have more of an opinion on this as I use the phone, however.

When 90Hz is on, the display is BUTTER smooth. This is my first 90Hz screen, and it is addictive. However, it turns itself off whenever it gets hot, which has been often. I wish I could keep that feature on all of the time. Response time aside, the screen is about the same quality-wise as the Pixel 3.

Live Caption is AMAZING. This alone makes it worth the upgrade. I don't watch videos that often, but when I do, I prefer turning the audio off so I can do other things. Live Caption is perfect for that.

The motion sensor doesn't work that well. I tried to swipe tracks while I was driving but deferred to my steering wheels controls instead since it didn't work at all. I also tried using it at the gym, and it worked, but it was way more effort than it should have been.

Apps feel faster than the 3a, but this may be due to it being in its honeymoon phase. Android devices tend to become more sluggish over time.

    Pixel 3a vs Pixel 4

I absolutely LOVED the 3a. It was very close to the perfect phone for me. I missed wireless charging and waterproof-ness, hence why I upgraded to the 3; had the 3a had these features, I would have gladly kept it.

Battery life on the 3a was better than the 3, so I suspect that it will be better than the 4 as well.

The only advantages the Pixel 4 has over the 3a are:

    • Dual camera lenses
    • Waterproofing
    • Wireless charging
    • 90Hz screen (when it works)
    • The Soli motion sensor

If the 4a has most of these things, I will probably get that instead.

    Android Comparability Feasibility

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:48 AM PST

I just had an idea, and want to know weather it would be possible or feasible, and it is to have a standard android compatibility connection to the firmware so that when a smartphone maker produces a phone they just make it compatible, and then Google supplies android to be compatible, so that you get the latest version of Android as soon as it is released, maybe with two versions, android and android lite (to improve performance on older or slower phones), and then different skins (MIUI for example) can be downloaded afterwards, along with phone specific apps. (I have no idea if this is even a new idea, or something that would work)

Why are there no niche phones any more?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:49 AM PST

2011-2016 (it seems) was full of new android startups and experimental phones that filled a niche: From Blackberry 10 OS (Which I actually LIKED, BTW, it was so much more productive than Android and iOS), to keyboards in phones, to smart pocket watches, there was so much expermentation and phones catering to niches, such as OnePlus. The closest thing we have now is the Galaxy Fold: OnePlus stll makes really good phones (OP6T owner here), but they seem so much more afraid to go against the grain and bring flagship features down. The Essential Phone was an utter bust, they failed to include like 90% of their niche wanted. The r/Android checklist for a perfect phone (which isn't that much of a niche), has not been satisfied by any one phone: Clean software, minimal bezels (no notch or hole punch), large battery, 1080p 90hz FLAT Amoled display, three decent cameras, Headphone jack, no gimmicks. Closest is the ZenFone 6 or the ROG Phone 2, but the ZenFone 6 has LCD, and the ROG phone 2 is embarassingly ugly.
