    Simple Questions - October 30, 2019

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I built a site to track the prices of PC parts

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:04 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

Like a lot of you, I've been lurking on /r/buildapcsales daily for a while now waiting for the best deal. To save some time, I ended up coding a script to watch items that I was interested in, and notify me when they fell below a certain price. I've saved a fair amount of money doing this, so I thought this is a tool that some of you could get some use out of too. Right now it's only got a couple of the big sites, but I have plans to add a bunch more.

    Here it is: https://www.shopsleuth.io/

Let me know if there's anything you all would find helpful to add!

    ryzen 5 vs 7

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 10:32 AM PDT

    i can get a ryzen 7 2700x with 8x3.70 ghz for about 180€
    a ryzen 5 3600 with 6x 3.60 ghz will cost me about 195€

is the ryzen 5 still better ? because most games are optimised for 6 cores ?

    Stuck at 60hz

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:36 PM PDT

So I recently bought a new pc with a 2070super in it and i noticed that it has only 3dp ports and 1hdmi one, while my 144hz monitor has 1hdmi port, 1dvi port and 1vga port, I tried all sorts of cables between them to see if I can get it to 144hz but no luck... Is there anything I can do to get it to 144hz? Or do I need to buy a new monitor as well?

What motherboards are Ryzen 3rd gen ready out of the box?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:06 PM PDT

I'm currently putting together a new build. I'm coming from intel and trying out AMD for the next build. What are some solid motherboard options that support Ryzen 3rd gen out of the box? The only one I know of at the moment is MSI b450 tomahawk MAX.

I won't have an AMD processor to use to upgrade the BIOS on boards that don't support 3rd gen out of the box. Thanks in advance.

Edit: x570 boards are a little high in price for my budget. I'd like to stay under 150

Building my son's first gaming PC--last minute decisions and validation

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:09 PM PDT

I'm a 40 y/o father with a 10 y/o son. I used to be absolutely HUGE into gaming. Huge as in our clan used to run a lan party facility with 150+ seating with a PC pro shop and trophy tournaments in the 2000s. Life happened, I stopped gaming, but now I have a 9, soon to be 10, y/o son who is firmly failing to even play roblox with mods on my old hand-me-down 2010 macbook pro. The last gaming PC I built was for BF 1942. Since then, I've built maybe 3 computers. I just threw a 1070ti in my i7 workstation I built in 2017, played some games, and damned if I'm not building my son a gaming PC now instead of buying a pre-built gaming laptop.

So, this old dog has been doing TONS of research, comparing CPUs, single threaded performance, core count, overall benchmark scores, cost/value comparisons, intel vs amd, bla bla bla, chipset features, heat generation, bleh. It's funny how the same arguments can be had nearly 20 years later.

Here's where I'm at. I don't want bleeding edge over clocking. I want stable, not super elite latest frame rates and detail levels, good mid to approaching high end equipment that can be run without stressing at 1080, play basically anything today at better-than-potato quality, and offer opportunities for my son go grow and upgrade the system as he learns. I've already told him I'm not buying him any fancy cases, LED nonsense, or liquid cooling, that he can spend his own money on that, and if he's smart, he'll turn his detail down and save up for a car anyway, but I digress.

To this end, I have elected to go with the following two very similar setups:

    Common parts

    • SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W PS
    • Antec Performance Series P7 Silent, Mid Tower case
    • HP EX920 M.2 512GB PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD
    • ASUS PCE-AC56 802.11ac Dual-band Wireless-AC1300 PCI-E Adapter
    • GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1650 OC 4G (GV-N1650OC-4GD)

    AMD Setup

    • AMD RYZEN 5 2600 6-Core 3.4 GHz w/ factory cooler
    • GIGABYTE B450M DS3H AMD Motherboard
    • Patriot Viper Steel 16GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200

    Intel Setup

    • Intel Core i5-9400F Coffee Lake 6-Core 2.9 GHz w/ factory cooler
    • GIGABYTE Z390 UD LGA 1151 (300 Series) ATX Intel Motherboard
    • Ballistix Sport AT 16GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2666

To be abundantly clear, I was building an intel system without a second thought but kept seeing the cpu value charts showing older Xeons, newer I3s, and Ryzens all above my original I5 choice. I quickly figured out that I didn't want to go with an I3 because I wanted the cores for modern games, didn't want the old Xeons because their single thread performance was not there and they were just core city, but the Ryzens were actually right at what seemed to be a sweet spot. So, I built an AMD version that is $70+ cheaper and according to every benchmark I can see, is just over 10% quicker. The only down side I can see is that the Ryzens tend to generate more heat and have a higher operating cost, but... that seems to be picking nits to say the least.

So, I'm really not trying to get an intel vs amd thing going, but is my reasoning sound here? I'm leaning toward buying the Ryzen system, but my gut tells me the Intel system will go together like butter and that I have no experience with AMD since freaking 1997. Also, I'm assuming the 3200 ram will step down to 2399 for a 1:1 with the Ryzen 5? I'd also like opinions on the selection of the 1650 card-- I feel completely clueless on the graphics card front these days.

Please be gentle! I was ready to pull the trigger on the I5 system and started getting frisky.

Is there a white RTX 2080 Super?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:23 AM PDT

As the title says, is there an RTX 2080 Super? I've just bought all my new parts and went with a white theme, I didn't get a 2080 super because there wasn't a white one, I got a 2070 Super instead. Is there a white 2080 Super available in the EU? If so please link it.

    Thanks

    3700x or 9700k? 2070 super?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:29 PM PDT

I had a similar question before but that was over the 3900x and the 9900k. Lowered my budget as I'm not doing any drastic workstation stuff. Might do light editing and rendering. But I'm primarily trying to decide on either a 3700x or the 9700k, as the title does say. I plan on streaming and gaming majority of the time and want something to last me a couple of years. I'm hoping for 1080p at least 144 hz, possibly 240. Do you also recommend the 2070 super? Heard mixed reviews of.

    Haunted hardware story: let's share

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:58 PM PDT

This seemed like an appropriate story to share the day before Halloween. It is not technically PC related, but I do hope the mods allow it. You see I am being haunted... by printer hardware.

The last week or so, while sitting at my PC, I have hear the faint, but unmistakable sound of an ink jet printer printing out a page. Obviously, the first thing I checked was my actual printer. Not a peep was coming from it. The lid was closed so it couldn't be doing any actual printing... but the sound was there. It seemed to be coming from farther back in my house, not the living room where the PC and printer are set up. And the last two mornings, at 3 a.m. I have been awakonen to those same sounds: The page being drawn in, the printer head moving across the page and then the page being spit out when it's done. Only this time the sounds seemed to come from the living room. When I investigated, the sounds stopped and I had no answers.

    1. Mom had purchase a really cheap desk printer from one of those dollar store place for $20. As the resident IT guy, it was my job to fix it and keep it running, and it was a problem child from the get go. The thing almost never worked, printed out horrible photos on expensive photo paper (I warned her) and was overall a pain my ass because of my mom's inability to see the sunk-cost fallacy. So I finally convinced her that I could not repair it and that it wouldn't even be worth it. Rather than take the thing to get the e-waste recycled (like I said I was going to) I took it my friend's place in the country and we went ape 💩 ( I mean Grape Ape on steroids) on that thing, Office Space-style . I'm talking aluminum baseball bat, a crowbar, a sledgehammer. We set the big chunks up on a stump and fired off a few rounds of buck shot from a 12-gauge. Then we raked the remains together, I set a big bag of Thermite on top, lit it and watched it all get reduced to molten slag. Then we built a bonfire on the embers, got really drunk and watched Scooby Doo episode and Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter on DVD (10 out of 10 would recommend just for the ninja vampire fight scene). Long story short, it may be haunting me as revenge.
    2. Almost 3 years ago I went on a buying spree during Black Friday and picked up a sweet Epson all-in-on wireless printer for $90. It has all the bells and whistles. Problem was that I didn't have an actual PC to hook it up to. For forward to just a few months ago. I no had a computer, I was planning my personal gaming rig build. I realized I was going to need to print something eventually. So I walked over to where that Epson printer is stored... and got my keys, drove to Best Buy and bought a nifty little HP Tango all-in-one wireless printer. Maybe the sounds are coming from inside the house 😱 Maybe, they are coming from inside that still unopened box with a perfectly good (if slightly pissed) printer trying to haunt me.
    3. The final theory is a little more mundane. I have my headphones connected full time and hanging on an NZXT puck. If there a video or audio file that played this sounds, it could come out of the headphones, reflect off of the glass bookcase doors across from it making a spooky sound . At night in bed, any sound coming from headphones would sound like it is coming from the living room... because it is. That's where the headphones are locate. That doesn't really explain what video or audio file was being played to make that noise. Or how that noise could be made at 3 a.m. when the browser and all the programs are closed and the computer is in sleep mode.

Please, if you have a hypothesis as to why this happening, or why theory 3 is more likely, feel free to comment. Also, if you got your own haunted hardware story, please share.

Is this a good router for 50$?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:57 PM PDT

Basically my internet is 30 mpbs down. My current router just died (Netgear WRN2000)

Currently I have 4 PC's connected through ethernet and we game and stream with no problems.

Would this router be a good replacement (Archer C60)?

    https://www.amazon.ca/TP-Link-Wireless-External-Archer-C60/dp/B01N23UOE2/ref=asc_df_B01N23UOE2/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292952161850&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3305833021391363848&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000462&hvtargid=pla-439331999732&psc=1

Keep in mind my download speed is only 30 mpbs so I would just like to know if this will suffice with my current setup.

    Thanks!!

Want to upgrade from R9 380, but not sure to what. Help!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:52 PM PDT

    Greetings hive mind,

I recently upgraded to Ryzen 3600, a Gigabyte x570 Pro and 16 delicious GBs of Corsair DDR4 3600. Changed quite a lot on my build with the exception of two things: my Gigabyte R9 380 and my PSU, a 600w Corsair.

GPU is up next (I tend to upgrade these every 4 years roughly) and to be honest, I have no idea what to go for - hence this post / plea for help. I will be gaming at 1080p for the foreseeable future, but it's always likely that I may upgrade to a 1440p monitor a couple of years down the line.

Any ideas? RX 590s are on sale at the moment in the UK (can get most of them at around £180) but I'm not sure I want to stick with Polaris for the next 4 years or so...

Intel 9900k or AMD 3900X cpu (VR enthusiast and CFD engineer)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:49 PM PDT

I recently got out of college and have gotten a job offer for engineering that will involve CFDs (complex fluid dynamics) which I hear is a very intensive form of CAD. I know that this job has some options for working from home on occasion which means my rig needs to be able to simulate these CFDs.

I also recently got an Oculus quest and am in love with VR and would like to prioritize this over the CAD modelling. (eventually upgrading to a valve index)

My first question is, should i go with the AMD 3900X or the new Intel 9900 KS (released today) [both overclocked]. The main reason i ask is because AMD 3900X is compatible with PCIE 4.0 (which i believe allows for faster ram and faster storage but PLEASE correct me if I am wrong) if it hadn't been for this it would have been a simple answer with 3900X being better for cad and 9900 KS being better for VR.

My second question is whether it is worth it to invest in a 4k 120hz monitor today (overkill) and use it also for my next rig (presumably 3 to 4 years down the line) or should I look for a more reasonable monitor and just buy a new one when I replace this rig. I hope to stream 4k Netflix to it and also play the occasional (non-VR) game at 1440 120hz 4k if she can handle it.

Assumptions: money is no issue, RTX 2080 ti, I will be buying this in about 3 months after i earn the money

Using Dell Tech provided Windows 10 Pro license on a custom PC?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:09 PM PDT

I work at a university that has a contract with dell that warranties machines for 3 years. Recently we had machines die and they came to replace the mothers boards and left behind a stack of Dell labeled Windows 10 Pro license keys to reactivate the replaces motherboards.

These keys are useless to us as we use Enterprise and have an activation server. The Dell tech still needs to leave these behind.

Would there be any issues with using one of these keys on a home PC?

    Helping replacing CPU fan/cooler

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:05 PM PDT

    Hello!

I am looking to replace the CPU fan/cooler on my AMD Athlon II X4 650 processor, running on a Biostar A880GZ motherboard. The current one is rather loud.

I've installed CPUs before, but never sourced and replaced a fan. I'm not sure how to go about making sure the fan I get will fit, whether I need thermal paste, etc.

I'm considering a Noctua, as I know they have a reputation for being quiet, but I'm open to suggestions for other brands.

Can anyone link to specific models that will work? I'm in the US. Budget is around $50-109 or so, I'm not overclocking or anything, just concerned with volume.

    Thanks!

PC reboots when I move it or hit the desk

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:31 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

I've just completed my first build (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZwNFtp) and I've run into some issues lately. Each time I bump the table wher my PC is or move my case a bit, my PC reboots. Sometimes it takes several reboots before I can get an actual image showing on my monitor.

I had previously put my stuff into a Corsair case SPEC 05, but it was a tad too small for my CPU cooler and I replaced it with an ICUE 220T (https://www.corsair.com/eu/en/Categories/Products/Cases/Mid-Tower-ATX-Cases/iCUE-220T-RGB-Airflow-Tempered-Glass-Mid-Tower-Smart-Case/p/CC-9011173-WW)

I might have damaged the PCIE holder when I removed my graphics card from the slot when changin cases. Could this be the cause?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Fans and overclocking`

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:17 PM PDT

I have a pre-built PC and it came with a warranty. The PC needs more fans and I want to possibly add a M.2/SSD and overclock.

With the fans, can I just plug them in and they'll work or is it more complex than that?

With the SSD and overclocking, if I were to do this, would the manufacturer be able to tell that I did if I removed the drive and put the computer out of overclock and back to the factory settings?

    Thanks guys

    Rx 480 Says its overheating

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:15 PM PDT

My PC is shutting off immediately after trying to open a game. GPU TWEAK II software shows that my GPU temperatures rise to 80 degrees in about 1min after playing the game and shuts off. Although it says my GPU says it's 80degrees it does not feel hot to the touch. My monitor goes all black with no windows error. I have upgraded everything in my pc except my graphics card and in my old pc, my graphics card ran about 65 degrees in-game and worked fine. My Cpu runs around 45-65 Degrees so I do not think the CPU is the problem. I have not overclocked my GPU in my new PC and I'm very concerned about what is going on. Could someone please help me, please.

Don't want it to be TN. Using it for gaming and watching videos.
