No sound on HP detachable pavillion x2.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:25 AM PDT

I recently installed Kubuntu on a HP Pavillion x2 10-p007na laptop. Most features worked but I simply could not figure out how to get the sound working. I'm having an issue where the only sound output 'is dummy output'. Neither the built-in speakers or a pair of wired headphones make any sound. I tried using it with Bluetooth headphones and somehow the sound worked, so I believe it might be an issue with detecting the hardware.

    Dual booting

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:01 PM PDT

Hi, I am wondering if it is possible to dual boot windows and linux while only having access to two(internal) hard drives. I have one hard drive running windows and another that has unimportant documents etc on it, I'd like to run kubuntu on the latter. I don't have access to a usb drive at the moment so I cannot boot it the usual way, just wondering if i could do it without one and if so how would I go about it? Cheers.

Notepad++ with Find All in Current Document

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 09:24 AM PDT

Hi. I'm using Pop Os 19.10 and I'm looking for an alternative to Notepad++ with a feature called Find All in Current Document. Whenever I search for a phrase with this option, it should show all hits in the current document. Does anyone know of any software that has this?

I'm using it for checking log files.

    Problem During Grub Recovery

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:09 AM PDT

I've had to do Grub recovery a few times, for whatever reason, to start up my computer. No problem, really, it's just a few lines I have memorized. Except now even this isn't working.

    ls (hd0,gpt3)/boot

shows vmlinuz-5.0.0-23-generic exists in that folder. However, when I try:

    Linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.0.0-23-generic root=/dev/sda3

I'm told that vmlinuz[...] is not found. I've tried the same with 32-generic with the same result.

Unable to install VirtualBox Guest Editions in new Ubuntu Budgie 19.10 VM?!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:53 PM PDT

I'm trying to install Ubuntu Budgie 19.10 in a VM, especially to show my dad when I visit him (that's what he is getting on his [soon to be] new Tuxedo machine). Everything worked fine on my Ubuntu and Ubuntu MATE 19.10 installs but I get the following message with Budgie:

    "Could not mount the media/drive '/usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED)."

Not sure how to solve this as nothing I've tried is working.

Host machine: Kubuntu 19.10 VirtualBox version 6.0.14

Accidentally deleted pacman, what should I do?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:57 AM PDT

    Hi,

I've messing with my arch installation and in the process of reinstalling yay to solve some dependency issue I think I accidentally deleted both pacman and yay. At least if I try to pacman or yay something I just get a command not found response. So what should I do? Should I do a base system reinstall or something else? If not, what specific packages should I download for pacman?

    thanks in advance

How to record podcast interviews on Linux?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 04:12 AM PDT

Are there any Linux tools to record podcast interviews remotely? This is basically me talking to someone in another location and recording the audio for both of us. It would be unreasonable for me to ask anyone I'm interviewing to record locally so it has to be something very easy for them to either just call a phone number or I call them or run an application. Not a single person I will be interviewing runs Linux so they will either be on Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android, or calling in from a phone. I can call them from my Linux desktop through my softphone setup using Zoiper.

I'm currently using Zoom but the audio bit rate is only 125kbs and I need higher quality than that so I need something that will give me 256kbs or higher audio quality.

Skype now has built-in recording but it's only 56kbs audio quality.

I'm running Manjaro KDE. Thanks for any advice.

Stuck in Boot menu after clean install Pop OS 19.10 on Thinkpad T490

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 06:22 AM PDT

Hi, I received my new laptop (Thinkpad T490) today and I wanted to install pop os on it. After booting from my usb and following the installation it tells you to restart the laptop. After the restart, the laptop is stuck in boot menu on startup and will not do anything. Changing the boot order does not help either. Any advice?

    EDIT: Solved

General question: what exactly is a shell?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:37 AM PDT

Hey, so this isn't exactly a linux specific question, but I figured I'd ask here. I want to learn more about what a shell is (and which shells there are) and what it can do. The thing is whenever I googled „shell" or „what is a shell" the information was always very surface level like „You can give commands to your OS via a shell command line.", but I'd like to learn more + I'd like to be able to maybe use that knowledge on my own machine to have a better experience overall :)

    Best kernel for Ryzen Laptop?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:15 AM PDT

I've tried Pop OS and Elementary OS, both with no success.

Pop OS came with kernel 5.1.3 and it just showed black screen after login. Apparently it's an issue that also occurs on another Ryzen laptop.

Elementary OS came with even older kernel, which was 4.1.6 I think and it wouldn't let me change my resolution. The resolution is stuck at 800x600 and the display is showed as "unknown display". I tried updating the kernel to 5.3.8 and it became even worse. I couldn't boot into eOS. It gave me AMD-Vi IOMMU error. I had to use recovery mode to boot into it to be greeted with the blurry screen resolution again. Not to mention the stupid slow wifi on Intel AC 8265. I'm on the verge of giving up on using Linux on Ryzen laptoo now.

I still considering to use Ubuntu, though. Do you think Ubuntu 19.10 or TLS would fix it? And what is the best kernel for Ryzen for now?

My laptop is Asus Vivobook Ultra X412DA Ryzen 5 3500U Vega 8 8GB RAM 240GB WD Green SSD

[HELP] Sound not working properly in freshly installed Ubuntu.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 04:11 AM PDT

So I just finished installing Ubuntu in my laptop but when I booted into it I was greeted with a loud pulsating noise from my speakers. I quickly opened YouTube and sure enough the sound isn't working. I then booted back into windows and my sound works just fine without any annoying noise . What should I do? I looked around online but none of the links seem to match my problem...

How to add a special character with sed before a pattern ?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:51 AM PDT

    Hello,

I've a lot of file and for each 85 last lines, I've missed the special character ";" :

Here an extract from the 85 lines :

    2019-10-30-06-00/dev/xxxx;3072.00;1296.33;/xx 2019-10-30-06-00/dev/xxx;3840.00;1176.35;/opt/xx/xx 2019-10-30-06-00/dev/xx;3200.00;808.01;/var/opt/xx 2019-10-30-06-00/dev/xx;20544.00;14722.3;/xx/xx/12201 2019-10-30-06-00/dev/xx;20544.00;14797.4;/xx/xx/12201

I would like to add an ';' before each /dev/ for the 85 last lines and for each files in my directory but I don't know how to do that.. I think I should use sed...

Can you show me how to do that ?

    Thank you ! :)

Wifi keeps asking for password/encryption and not connecting even though it worked before reboot.

So, I installed some gnome extensions via the website. After that I tweaked some stuff and restarted my laptop. Now, my laptop won't connect to the wifi it was just connected to and keeps asking for password/encryption again and again even though I'm 100% sure the password is correct.

How to disable the dedicated AMD GPU on my ASUS laptop?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 06:46 AM PDT

I have an ASUS laptop with the FX 7600P (R7 Graphics included) and a R5 M230 dedicated GPU. The dedicated GPU is rather weak (lol), but the laptop is bandwidth limited to hell since it only has a single 4GB DDR3l RAM. Now the dedicated GPU has 2GB DDR3 which I won't use since I'm gonna use the integrated GPU exclusively to save on power consumption and heat. How do I disable the dedicated GPU? I'm on Ubuntu 19.10 for your information

    Specs:

    CPU: FX 7600P

    GPU: Integrated R7; R5 M230

    RAM: DDR3 4GB

    OS: Ubuntu 19.10

    ASUS X550ZE

I got a separate SSD and I'm planning to install Windows on it, how do I not make it eat my openSUSE install

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:20 AM PDT

So I don't want to get too far into it, but muh games. I got an existing openSUSE install on my primary NVME SSD, and I got a secondary(regular) SSD to throw Windows on it for one or two games, every now and then. Problem is, my current openSUSE install has a bunch of shit I don't want gone. Steam games, that would take days to reinstall, configuration bits I've forgot about etc. I've heard about removing the NVME physically before installing, but I'm kind of scared about doing that, as that would require me to take out everything but the motherboard.

Is there any way to prevent Windows from eating my existing install without removing disks physically?

Using virtual machine for windows apps without separate VM window?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:49 AM PDT

So essentially, can I run a windows application like Hearthstone or Word in a virtual machine while displaying it as just another Linux window, instead of opening VM window and then running the application in there?

    Random marker movement when typing

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:23 AM PDT

I have an issue with my system, after updating to ubuntu 19

While typing, i have noticed that my marker will jump around so that i end up completing my sentences further up the text or it will put my text in the search field, url etc. Its really annoying and happens pretty often!

I suspect my mouse sends unwanted sugnals so that it clicks away from where i am typing, but this does not explain all issues, like it popping up the ctrl+F search field of my browser and continue typing there.

I didn't have this problem before updating. Any tips or suggestions?
