Posted: 27 Oct 2019 06:04 PM PDT It's Monday, you've not yet had coffee and the week ahead is gonna suck. Lets open the floor for a weekly Stupid Questions Thread, so we can all ask those questions we're too embarassed to ask! Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Serious answers are not expected. [link] [comments] |
Norther CA fires, power outages, and data systems losing signal Posted: 28 Oct 2019 08:19 AM PDT I'm in Northern CA and we've been without power for a couple days and I've noticed I'm starting to lose signal to cell towers. Normally I have full 4/5g, but that fell down to low signal, and now is basically no data at all and only text and call. So I have a few questions: (I'm at work now were we do have power) [link] [comments] |
Looking for a 4G LTE modem that can be used in bridge mode - any advice? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:17 AM PDT Hi We're looking for a 4G LTE modem that can be used as failover connection in a company network. I need one without routing, so that the downstream device gets a public IP. Any suggestions or good experiences with hardware? Cheers Yves [link] [comments] |
Need Suggestions: National Cabling Vendors Posted: 28 Oct 2019 07:51 AM PDT Alright guys... I need suggestions for a nation-wide (USA) low-voltage cabling vendor. My current process is to open up the "phone book" and award a job to the first company that calls me back and doesn't have crazy prices. I'm tired of juggling multiple vendors and having to explain who Vendor XYZ is every budget season. It would be much nicer to work with a dedicated Account Manager for all orders and let them handle the logistics and quotes. It would also make my life easier from a budgeting perspective as I would be able to actually follow a true trend in spend from year to year. Although I'm fine with a company that sub-contracts to achieve that national footprint, it can't just be labor. I need this company to provide both time & materials. I'm not going to order and stock cable, patch panels, etc at locations when I need an ethernet run made. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
DMVPN/ADVPN Interoperability with Other Vendors Posted: 28 Oct 2019 10:49 AM PDT With DMVPN (ADVPN on some vendors) being proprietary, is there any "DMVPN" like solution that works across multiple vendors? I'm hoping there's some sort of industry standard dynamic spoke-to-spoke standard out there (or in the works) that can get multiple vendors on the same page. [link] [comments] |

Cisco routers in HA, like ASA's, NOT HSRP. Possible? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:29 AM PDT Hi All, Firewall engineer here. I need to implement a Cisco router to act as our BGP peer point, which will be in front of the ASA's, and will BGP to two ISP's from my ASN. It's going to be a Cisco router. Management wants it to be high availability, and I agree. I know with ASA's you can do an HA pair of primary and standby. Is that possible with routers as well in any configuration that is NOT HSRP/VRRP? I don't want to use any sort of IP SLA tracking in this redundancy, which kind of goes hand in hand with HSRP to trigger the decrement value. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2019 12:50 PM PDT If I have, say a three-floor building and my MDF with the demarc is on the first floor and I have a single IDF for horizontal cabling on each floor, what is the backbone wiring scheme to connect the IDFs? Do I need to run backbone just from MDF to second floor IDF and then from second floor to third floor IDF or do I run separate cables from MDF to each IDF individually? This is purely theoretical, by the way, if that wasn't apparent. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:15 AM PDT Hey folks, I am trying to get a rpcap live capture from a device to fill up my ELK Stack with data, but it turns out, that wireshark (to this day) only supports local interfaces on linux, no remote capability sadly. Most online forums mention "libcap might on day support remote capture", but they are from 2013 or earlier. Did we really accept that the defacto best Packet-Sniffer does not support rpcap on windows? This is pretty depressing to be honest. Anyone found a way or a voodoo libcap version that supports rpcap? Thanks so much! [link] [comments] |
Looking for a better understanding between an IP address and a MAC address Posted: 28 Oct 2019 09:55 AM PDT This isn't really a homework question but if I'm asking it on the wrong subreddit feel free to tell me which one would be the right one to go ask this thanks. I'm currently going through the Introduction to Networks class on Cisco's netacad and have difficulty on grasping the use of MAC addresses if every device already has a unique IP address. I can understand that if the frame stays on the LAN that it has been sent from it might be easier for the switches to find the corect destination device but in the end if it's the IP packet that knows where it's supposed to end up and every end device has it's own IP why even bother with the extra step of adding the MAC? I also understand that if the end devices destination is not on the same LAN as the source device, the destination MAC address becomes the one of the router that ships the packet to the other network and not the one of the end device itself but with that comes my confusion of why is there not just a single fixed IP address for each network and then a unique MAC address for each receiving device instead of having a unique IP and MAC address for each device? It gets a bit more confusing to me when I think about the fact that there is only about 4 billion unique IPv4 addresses and there is about 7 billion people on the planet (even though probably more than half of them don't even have access to electricity let alone the internet) plus all the servers and other devices that exists, if IPv6 has been in rnd since the 90's how has it not become standardized by now? I hope this made sense to some of you, it has been bugging me for the past couple of weeks and since it's an online course I don't really have a teacher that I can go ask these questions to. The teachers from my actual classes might be able to help but the few times I did asked things somewhat out of their fields they seemed almost as lost as I was so since reddit has been helpful in the past I figured I might give it a shot. If you made it all the way through thanks for trying to help it means a lot :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2019 09:39 AM PDT So I have a new Cisco switch (Uptime – 6 weeks) that seems to be denying POE power to a specific port. This just happened in the last few days, all other ports are identical in settings and are operational. The end device is a Shoretel deskphone model 530. I've read about deny-power bugs in earlier versions of iOS (12.x), but this switch is currently on version 16.6.6. So far I've tried resetting the port, trying different devices, but still no power. No other changes to the port have been made in terms of PoE settings. I'm going to reboot the switch tonight to see if that helps, but in the meantime was wondering if anyone has come across this yet. Switch model: WS-C3650-48PS iOS Version: 16.6.6 sh power inline… Switch#sh run | begin interface GigabitEthernet1/0/45 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2019 01:44 PM PDT I'm trying to prank a coworker by messing with his network connection. Per the rules of engagement for the prank, I can only mess with the physical objects in his cubicle, or access his computer if he left it unlocked. I have already managed to reduce the speed of his network connection to 10/100 full by placing a sliver of post-it note over pin 8 of his existing ethernet cable. O wise networking gurus, is there any way I can modify his cable further, or make a new cable that will reduce his network speed even more without modifying the config on the switch, or the config on the computer itself? Edit: This has to be non destructive to his equipment. I like my job. The port has PoE, but if someone can find a really good idea that requires no PoE, it can probably convince my boss to disable it on that port. [link] [comments] |
interconnecting N9K-C9372PX to N2K-C2232PP-10GE Posted: 28 Oct 2019 05:59 AM PDT Dear Reddit r/networking community, A customer of mine wants to interconnect some N9K-C9372PX's to some N2K-C2232PP-10GE's. According to the following datasheet he will need to use 4X10G Breakout cable. To make sure that I fully understand this, are these cables plugged into the QSFP ports (N9K) and afterwards plugged in into SFP+ ports (N2K)? and if possible, could you point me in the right direction partnumber wise for the breakout cables. Any extra info on connecting these two I will gladly read through. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
My home is a labyrinth, my me upgrade my wireless network. Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:40 PM PDT I have a hodgepodge WiFi network in my home. The house is about 5,000 sq/ft and consists of two "wings" (it's not a mansion, not trying to suggest it is). But seriously, the second floors of the two wings are not connected, access is through the first floor and basement only. The main wing has most of the living area while the second wing consists of two garages stacked on one another and a living area above them. As you can imagine, WiFi propagation from the main wing to the garage wing is terrible (air gap between the two wings on the second floor plus a concrete floor between the two garages). I have been pulling cat5e to various locations in the house and using cheap router and access WiFi extenders are APs. I disable DHCP, assign a static address (rather reserve one on the main router), connect to the main router/modem and go. This works but handoff is terrible at best. Also, managing WiFi channels and tracking down problems is terrible. I want to add an outdoor AP or two but figure I should probably migrate towards an all-in-one solution indoors first. Suggestions on replacing my random APs with an all in one system? Keep it reasonably priced. I'm spending about $60 per AP at the moment and am reasonably content. [link] [comments] |
Clearpass and Chromebooks best setup. Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:18 PM PDT Right now our chromebooks use the iap ssid to get on network. Only techs have the password to place on network. I would like to transfer this to the Clearpass we have but not certain how to proceed. Does anyone have experience with this or can direct me where I can find information? Edit. We dont have onboarding. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Eve-ng or GNS3 on Lubuntu (lightweight ubuntu) Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:13 PM PDT I am planning to install Eve-ng on Lubuntu which is lightweight version of Ubuntu. Did anyone tried that if yes how it goes? I am planning to install because of hardware resource and to keep OS lightweight Do you think it will work or should just go with Ubuntu (Core) CLI based server. [link] [comments] |
Installed new Cisco 2110 into FMC and now Chrome loads webpages like its on dial-up? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 02:33 PM PDT Not 100% sure where to even start investigating this. A new pair of Cisco 2110's were installed as our new firewalls, and all of a sudden browsing on chrome is a nightmare. Youtube especially. Webpages will either fail to load, or partially load. It is like we are back on dial-up. If you use IE or Edge all is well and webpages are snappy.....dark days I know. Before this we had 5510's and everything was working fine. We didn't change any of the rules (to my knowledge) between deployments. The biggest change was going to FMC and a new model of firewall really. Has anyone run into a similar issue? Routing to/from China Telecom (AS 4134) elsewhere in Asia? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 10:33 AM PDT So we've ran into an issue where there's a site with a DIA provided by China Telecom. Traffic between that site and other sites in Asia is being routed all the way to the US and back. Obviously that's not desirable, so we looked into it and it seems that ASN4134 doesn't peer anywhere in Asia. There's gotta be some part of this I'm missing. The obvious thing folks around the office are suggesting is "something something great firewall" but I don't see how that would preclude peering inside of asia... if anything I'd have assumed that would make it hard to get to them from the US, not that traffic inside of asia would HAVE to go to the US first, etc... Is there some other carrier sites in China that expect to talk to the rest of asia should use? (to be clear, I'm not directly involved in the procurement here, this is a service provided to one of our customers by some other carrier, so my interest here is mostly curiosity) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2019 02:07 PM PDT Hello, I'm new in the IT industry and I for the life of me, can't find a good crimper to buy. I've scoured the internet but the negative reviews are enough to not buy. I would appreciate recommendations for a good and reliable crimper, as well as a stripper and punch down tool. Posted: 28 Oct 2019 02:03 PM PDT Hi all, We are getting a /29 public IP block from ISP out of which one is used by PE and other by my router on site. Is there any possibility to use the leftover 4 public IPs towards the LAN side of my router without any NATing involved? Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Is MTP/MPO-24 backwards compatible with MTP/MPO-12/8 Posted: 28 Oct 2019 12:00 PM PDT Basically I want to use transceivers that use MPO-8 with an MPO-24 cable. Is this possible? I know a 12 will work and it just won't use the 4 inner fibers, but I can't find any information on if the MPO-24 connector will line up with an MPO-12/8 device. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
802.11ac wifi USB dongles - recommendations? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:40 AM PDT I'm trying to convince the local IT folks at several of our remote locations to use 5Ghz for any critical networking and quite trying to tweak their hopelessly congested 2.4Ghz spectrum into something usable. Some of the locations still have a metric butt-load of laptops that only do 2.4GHz. They are asking about USB wifi dongles. I see that there are lots to choose from. Does anyone have recommendations for devices that are reliable and perform well under windows (mostly 10, but some 7 no doubt)? [link] [comments] |
Juniper Pearson VUE Email Address Posted: 28 Oct 2019 12:52 AM PDT Can I create a person vue account with my Gmail email and not use my work email. Is there a problem with this? will this still reflect in my juniper account which is based on my work email [link] [comments] |
Aruba/HPE Networking Certifications Posted: 28 Oct 2019 10:19 AM PDT Anyone on here have experience with Aruba/HPE networking certifications? I've recently moved into a role where I deal with Aruba switching and Wireless more than in my previous role which was primarily Cisco. While I'm not required (yet) to have Aruba certs, I figured it would be a good idea to start with the ACSA to get some switching experience, then move to ACSP. After that probably the mobility track. So far i've not seen much in the way of 3rd party self study materials (books and videos). The official study material is very expensive :( *Time to rant* I thought Cisco's certification pages were confusing, but that is nothing compared to the HPE site. There are several different pages and links to click on to get the information I need. So far i've registered for the "fast-track" because I already have CCNP, but I'm not sure where to go from here...? Any advice and training material for ACSA, ACSP, or ACMA would be greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |
