    Simple Questions - October 28, 2019

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Just a random reminder to clean your computer equipment

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 05:58 AM PDT

My cheap computer keyboard died so I got a mechanical keyboard. That made me want to clean my mouse, desk, monitors, and PC.

I've only had my computer setup for almost a year and a half, but a deep clean needed to be done. Have a great day!

Edit: Here's a guide on how to clean your pchttps://reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/12kmdx/my_guide_on_how_to_clean_your_entire_computer/

Build Help: Friend's First Gaming Desktop

    Posted: 27 Oct 2019 08:55 PM PDT

Edit: Thanks so much for all the help! I'm basically useless when it comes to this stuff which is why I always try to check with you all! The only reason I got my pc built in the first place is because I had reddit tear my build list a new one so I could get something that was actually usable!

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

About 700, but flexible within reason

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Provide any additional details you wish below.

My friend is asking me to help him since I built my PC before (with help from this subreddit!), so I figured double-checking my work to tell me if I'm way off base with my ideas won't hurt anything, but my pride.

My friend is flexible on the budget within reason. Long story short is that he has been gaming on a laptop that wasn't built to handle games and it has been slowly dying on him over the years. I'm trying to get him set up with something stable that he can enjoy his games on.

PC for running CFD, CAD, and similar simulations using programs like Solidworks, Comsol, Ansys, and Altium

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 10:42 AM PDT

I have been tasked with building three computers to run some mildly intensive fluid and heat simulations. The budget is about $3000 for the three computers. I'm thinking about having one more powerful and more expensive with the other two less expensive to make the $3000 budget. The build below would be the more powerful computer.

I'm not sure if I should keep the 12 core CPU or downgrade it to make the three computers all equal/upgrade another part in the more powerful PC. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Monitors are 24" 60hz with two monitors per tower.

Noob question: are gpu fans constantly turning on and off a normal thing to occur?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:17 AM PDT

Built my first pc over the weekend and started to hear a clicking noise this morning. After some investigating, I determined that it was the gpu fans turning off and on every few seconds. Is this normal? GPU is evga 2080 super xc ultra.

    PC under $2000, questions

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 06:47 AM PDT

Hi, I'm looking to build a new PC with a budget of around $2000.

It was a long time ago I built my current PC and I'm not sure if I have missed or forgotten something.

This is the build I'm leaning against: Pic of parts

I'm still undecided between 32 GB RAM and the RTX 2070S or 16 GB of RAM and the 2080.

I feel like I've forgotten something obvious so any comments or suggestions regarding the build would be appreciated.

Any suggestions on a case with good filters

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:42 PM PDT

I'm going to be building an office box for someone who smokes and has a dog. Dog likes to sleep right next to the tower and he smokes at least one an hour while working. Any suggestions on a case to keep the crud outside with removable filters would be greatly appreciated.

Do computers accumulate more dust when they are placed on ground or when placed on a desk?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 01:33 PM PDT

So kind of a weird question and thing that I thought about. I wanted to know what you guys think, I currently place my PC on the ground, however it is standing on a wooden plank to avoid direct contact with carpet. Is this a stupid question or have I uncovered the biggest news yet?

Friend is upgrading his pc and selling me is current one for $1200, jw if it's a good price and specs

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 02:33 AM PDT

Specs: CPU: i5-8600K 4.5GHz GPU: EVGA 1080 Ti SC Black MOBO: ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming-ITX/Ac Ram:G.Skill Trident-Z RGB DDR4 16GB 3200mhz SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 1TB (OS) installed SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 4TB HDD: Seagate Enterprise 7200RPM 10TB PSU: Silverstone 600w SFX Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i CPU cooler Case: Silverstone ML07B OS: Windows 10 Pro

    In all $1200

Update: so unfortunately he has decided to keep his 4tb drive which tbh isn't a deal breaker and yes $1200 is still the price which eh, for everything still included I'd say is fair. But I did learn he has warranties on all parts with invoices still kept. So I'd be covered in case something goes wrong.

First PC build for 1440p gaming.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 04:38 AM PDT

So I'm a complete beginner in the field of PC building and wanted some help in getting the correct parts. Here's what I have come up with so far:

CPU: AMD RYZEN 5 3600x 3RD GENERATION DESKTOP PROCESSOR

    RAM: G.SKILL 16GB (8GBX2) DDR4 – 3000 MHZ TRIDENT Z RGB SERIES RAM

GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2070 Super Windforce 8G Graphics Card, 3X WINDFORCE Fans

    SSD: Crucial MX500 500GB SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5-inch 7mm Internal SSD (CT500MX500SSD1)

PSU: Antec EARTHWATTS GOLD PRO 750W

Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX MOTHERBOARD

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C White-TG Tempered Glass Case

HDD: Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200 RPM

I will be playing mostly singleplayer AAA's, though I might venture into nultiplayer territory eventually. I want the build to be relatively future proof and want minimal upgrades for atleast the next 5 years. I do not care about rgb lights right now, so if you could help me find a mobo that had minimal lights and was cheaper than my current one that would be nice. Also, I do not have any idea about the cooling units. That's about it. Thanks for your time:)

Edit: I would also like to know if the 3* fans of gpu is overkill and if i should use a 2 fan gpu.

    Can't decide between 3600 and 2600

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:23 AM PDT

Hi, I'm upgrading my gaming PC, and until now I've got:

    -Asus TUF x470

    -Rx 5700 (pulse)

    -Vengeance 16gb 3000mhz

I can't decide on the CPU. Obviously the 3600 is better for gaming (about +10fps iirc) but in my country is about 200€ now, while the 2600 is 130€.

Point is, I have 150€ at the moment. It's not like I can't find the money, but saving 70€ wouldn't be bad.

I'm kinda stuck, just wanted to hear someone else's thought on this...thanks

Someone please help me come to my senses

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 04:12 PM PDT

It has been many long months of me going back and forth between building a PC vs buying a supp'd up iMac. I haven't had a powerful machine is over 10 years. I just absolutely can't make up my mind. I think it is time for some outside perspective and input

The reason it is so challenging for me is because when I ask myself what I need the computer for, the answer is pretty much everything:

    1. My profession is cinematography, so I need to be able to use Davinci resolve which is entirely GPU dependent. (Windows wins here.) HOWEVER, the 5K iMac panel is one of the best I have seen available for color accuracy (Apple win)
    2. I tend to use premiere for mild editing tasks: (CPU dependent)
    3. I haven't gamed on a PC in over a decade, and would like to have the option of that again: (Windows)
    4. User upgradeability. I am quite sour to the idea that if I drop 3.5K on an iMac that I am absolutely stuck with the internals until the machine runs its course. I owned a macbook pro 2011 that still is kicking because I could upgrade the ram & hdd: (BIG windows win here)
    5. Clean, minimal, and efficient workspaces that help me focus on tasks:
    • Unless I am ignorant to it, I haven't found a better equivalent to so many Mac experiences on a windows machine such as airdrop, preview, screen shot-ing, tagging, the photos app, and the efficiency of finder in general. To put it bluntly, I am not a fan of the windows 10 OS interface at all... (Apple win here)

The clean, all in one experience of an iMac is overwhelmingly appealing to me especially considering the retina display for my profession, but is it worth the tremendous blow to GPU power (Vega 48 vs what could be a 2070 or 2080), and being locked into the hardware forever? I don't really know. In a perfect world, I could have both machines but my budget is 4K at the absolute most.

    What's the internet think?

Is it bad that I never turn off my computer?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 06:02 AM PDT

I have a costom built PC while running 2 27in monitors and a lot of power, but the problem is I never turn my computer off. I am still in high school and I leave it on overnight, when I leave for school, and even when I'm home it's always on. Will this harm the computer?

Wanna make sure this works before buying

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:34 PM PDT

    Hi all!

I am about to buy this PC for gaming, programming and just regular use. I was stuck on the RAM, motherboard and PSU for a while, but I think it is fine now. I just would like someone else (with more experience) to take a look at it.

I know the PSU is more Watt than I should get, but the motherboard has an extra power connector for the CPU, which gave a warning on PCPartPicker and only 750W PSUs are compatible with this + I just want to be safe.

    So, here it is:

    Help with GPU upgrade

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:30 PM PDT

I've been using a GTX 980 for the past 4-5 years to play games on a 1080p 60hz display. Recently, I upgraded to a 1440p 144hz monitor and now my card struggles to keep up. It's been a long time since I've done any research on the topic of GPUs, so I'm looking for advice on where to begin (especially on newer technologies like G-Sync/FreeSync and RTX). I typically play single-player action/adventure or FPS games and I'd like to be able to run them on High or Ultra settings. The monitor I have is an Asus MG278Q. Any feedback you guys have will be much appreciated!

    1080ti or 1080 SLI

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:29 PM PDT

I'm being gifted some old tech, but I have to choose and get first dibs. I can either score a 1080ti or I can get 2 x 1080's for SLI. I game at 1440p, currently with a 1070 that I wasn't considering upgrading until the 3070(?) comes out and has been out for a while. I tend to keep my hardware for a long time, and being a bit skint on cash I don't see myself being able to buy another 1080ti to SLI that.

What should I take? I think I'm leaning towards the 1080 SLI for the performance. I know that the old adage it to get the best single slot you can, but I'm already content with the 1070's performance at 1440p so my thoughts are to get as much pure horse power as I can. Not sure if it matters but the 1080ti is an Asus Turbo (single blower fan)that was added to a Dell machine previously and the 1080's are stock Dell single fan blower models, that look quite similar to the 1080ti I mention here.

UPDATE: OK, I'm convinced. 1080ti it is. Thanks for the info!
