How do I progress beyond being a "surface-level user?" Posted: 27 Oct 2019 09:17 PM PDT I've been using linux on my desktop for a year or so (windows-xubuntu dual boot installed by a friend). I love it, but as the title says, I want to "get into the guts" and understand it more. My general plan is to buy a cheap laptop (don't want to mess with the delicate balance on my work-recreation machine) and learn by messing around, but I'm beginner enough that I can't really judge where to start. Any ideas? edit: Wow, went to sleep and woke up to a lot more than I expected. Thank you all so much! [link] [comments] |
Given project involving Drupal turnkey website, can't access hosted files with http Posted: 28 Oct 2019 09:29 AM PDT Total noob, I am sorry. I was handed a drupal turnkey website project. I've worked through most of the functionality. The roadblock I'm running into now, is that I have put documents and pdfs that need to be displayed, but when I try to access them through http (e.g. cool.pdf stored at address.com/var/www/drupal/site/cool.pdf), it doesn't work. And I'm not sure how to get it working. I've spent a couple hours googling and trying different things, and I'm at a loss. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2019 09:55 AM PDT Long time Linux user with a noob question. I have three drives in my PC, one has my root partition and the other are just ext4 drives with read and write permissions. However, the other two drives occasionally switch names when I reboot; they're accessed in the filesystem under /run/media/username/9e3... and /run/media/username/714... but they sometimes swap those addresses. This is problematic because when they do this, Spotify tries to store my downloaded songs into the other drive because it has the name Spotify registered for offline storage, and Steam can't find the games saved to one drive because its name for the games directory has been reassigned to the drive that I didn't download the games to. How can I give each drive a static name so they don't switch up on me? EDIT: caught myself right after posting; I'm running Arch. [link] [comments] |

Debian Stable as personal desktop OS Posted: 27 Oct 2019 10:14 PM PDT I often hear that debian is used primarily in servers for its security and stability. Are they referring to the repositories and/or packages available to download by default or the kernel itself? Also, is there anything that you can install on ubuntu but cant on debian stable? I want to change my background based on time of day Posted: 28 Oct 2019 06:59 AM PDT So I've been looking around for a way to do this, but all I can find is people suggesting programs that let you make slideshows, which Mint 19.2 can already do, and that's not what I want anyways. I found this script which seems like it does exactly what I want it to do, but I don't know how to implement it. Where am I supposed to tell the script what wallpaper I want to use? Do I have to change any of the other coding to make this work (the times to change the wallpaper seem fine to me) on my computer? Will this even work on Mint 19.2? I don't have any background in Python or honestly much of any coding and am also still new to Linux so I need a lot more hand holding through this. [link] [comments] |

USB flash drive mounted as read-only Posted: 28 Oct 2019 01:59 PM PDT My USB drive used to work normally but after I had mounted it manually once I cannot mount it with read-write-permissions at all. At some point I even managed to create a folder within the drive but other than that it seems to be locked up in a really weir way. Any help would be appreciated as this has already happened to me once and it would be very annoying to have to back all the data up, repartition the flash drive and put it back on there again. Wine How to run windows software that requires you to chnage system language locale Posted: 28 Oct 2019 01:53 PM PDT Hello everyone, I want to run a Japanese software which required windows 10 to go to control panel > region and then chnage system locale to japanese and reboot . How should I run such software with wine. Is there a way to change wine system locale for runing non-unicode system locale software?? [link] [comments] |

Ubuntu Dual boot USB not functioning :( Posted: 28 Oct 2019 12:51 PM PDT I have a windows 10 laptop where I intent to use Ubuntu in dual boot mode. My USB has the Ubuntu iso image (official website download). I pressed on f11 during the booting and it gave me the boot menu. When I select the option to boot from USB it does nothing. I just stay in the menu. Pls help. I really do want to use Ubuntu as my main OS but this is killing me. Further context: Safe boot-disabled. Quick boot-disabled. Tried redownloading the ISO image from the web and onto the USB. didn't work. The USB has been formatted before I've put in the ISO. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Oct 2019 12:31 PM PDT I want to try Lubuntu. I read that I can install it onto a USB. I don't want to just install a live bootable drive that I can use to try it out, I want a permanent OS to boot off and run from a USB. I want to be able to install software like VLC and Telegram onto it, then when I turn it off and go to use it again, I'll have the VLC and Telegram, alongside all my other files, still present on the USB and ready to be uses, just like when running a OS off a SSD. I haven't done this before. I have just Windows 10 at the moment. How can I go about doing this? [link] [comments] |

LibreOffice Impress edit section doesn't work, like at all. Posted: 28 Oct 2019 12:13 PM PDT I have been making a presentation about FOSS for a few days now and today for some reason when I wanted to add more things LibreOffice refused to allow me to do anything with slides. No matter what I do, the edit section stays completely white, except for one thing. I have an animation that moves from one spot to another and that makes an arrow is visible in the edit section. When zooming in or out (not when moving the screen) the arrow duplicates itself, and after many duplicates have been made and you move around the slide screen tearing ensues. I don't know what's wrong, everything worked fine yesterday and no I haven't made any updates to any of my software. TL;DR Somethings wrong with rendering the slide edit section probably. Thanks to anyone in advance. [link] [comments] |
File access will freeze any program for around 10 seconds. Posted: 28 Oct 2019 03:14 AM PDT Does anybody knows this symptoms?
I have the same OS/kernel/app and same partition layout on a X230 laptop and it did not show this symptoms. edit: At first i thought the SSD failing, but SMART says it's fine. No random lock-up or crash, just freeze around 10 seconds on any first file access by any app, and only the app that access file that freezes. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2019 01:47 AM PDT So I'm looking for a laptop to run Linux (Manjaro) on for personal use. To he fair, its basically going to be used for big standard use (web/email/Netflix etc). Could I use the new lowest spec Pixelbook Go (i3, 64Gb SD and 8Gb RAM) and bung Linux on? Or are there laptops machines that Linux users normally gravitate to that would give me what I need? I'm in the UK and £600 is my maximum ceiling really, less if I can get away with it. [link] [comments] |
What programs can handle and decrypt LUKS? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 10:24 AM PDT I have a LUKS encrypted drive I use for my Linus distros that I occasionally need to access on my Mac. Is there any software that can handle and decrypt LUKS drives and the Linux file format? [link] [comments] |

Why does my rig only support rolling release distros? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 06:17 AM PDT Having tried to install debian and ubuntu always caused me to have the "AMD-Vi Firmware Bug" thing. However, rolling release distros such as arch and manjaro don't cause me these problems. Why is that? [link] [comments] |
Touchscreen on Surface Pro 6 running Linux Mint Posted: 28 Oct 2019 09:39 AM PDT I just installed Linux mint and the touch screen is completely unresponsive. It doesn't even move the mouse. I tried to find answers but I can't really find anything. I'm not really sure where to start. It seems most people have at least limited functionality out of the box, so maybe a driver failed to install properly? EDIT: figured it out. There's a kernel I downloaded from here:https://github.com/jakeday/linux-surface and it seems to be working now. [link] [comments] |
Multiple Distro's + Windows 10 bootable USB? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 09:36 AM PDT I'm tying to put the installers of multiple distro's of linux (Ubuntu, Kali, Debian, CentOS, and Turnkey, possibly more) on to the same USB drive, I would like to also include Windows 10's installer as well. I have the ISO's for all of these, but I'm wondering if there's a command line tool I can use to install all of these with a boot menu similar to Hirens Boot CD if you've heard of it?
