Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:41 AM PDT So my friend doesn't have the capability of running Ethernet. Asked me which of these 2 would be best for his 2,000 sq ft home with 15 devices. Only one tv hardwired. I told him the Velop Mesh. Does anyone else have any of the 2 for advice. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Added second router, and now internet connection keeps going in and out. Help! Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:09 PM PDT It's kind of confusing to explain and I don't know if I'm using all the terminology right but here it goes... I have a porn addiction so I wanted to block access to porn on my computer but I also need limited internet access for school home work. I looked up routers that have a whitelist function which essentially only allows me to go on specific sites that the administrator sets. After some research, TP Link seemed to be the best alternative. With the whitelist function, I can only go on X, Y, and Z sites and my brother help me set this up so I can't go back in and change the settings and get access to porn. Dilemma... My brother is a gamer and has an expensive router (ASUS). So we piggybacked the TP Link router to his Asus router and for the most part it works out fine. So it looks like [[[ Wall -> Modem -> Asus Router -> TP Link Router. ]]] The problem now is that ever since we added the TP Link Router on top of the Asus Router, the Asus router goes out for 30 seconds every couple hours or so and it's irritating for my brother since he's a gamer. I don't know why this is happening, can anyone think of why this is and how to fix it? *The Asus router does have a whitelist function, but the whitelist function applies to all devices on the router, whereas the TP Link can specify which devices get controlled. * [link] [comments] |
Speed test that gives you feedback on VOIP potential, video streaming potential, etc Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:57 AM PDT Is there an app or site that could breakdown how my connection will affect VOIP quality, video quality, etc? I know I could look these up separately but when i can never remember the recommended metrics when I travel and it would be nice to get it at a glance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:01 PM PDT I'm looking to buy a new router to use with spectrum but I don't know if I can use any router or if it has to be one that has a MoCA cable attachment since the one that spectrum gave us has it connected on it , I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm not good with this stuff so I'd appreciate any help [link] [comments] |
Trying to improve my home network. Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:28 PM PDT Hello! This is my first time posting here and I am pretty clueless when it comes to home networking. I am trying to better understand my home rework and how I can make it better. I currently have an ISP provided gateway (I believe that's what it's called) that acts as my modem/router all in one. I pretty much want to figure out how I can add a router to my setup so that I do not have to use the ISP provided gateway for my wifi. I have been reading online that I should not just plug a router into the ISP gateway but instead I should get a "switch" and plug the router into that. I have attached a picture of my homes current set up to this post. I would also appreciate any other suggestions to make my home network better! :) [link] [comments] |
Running a VPN through LTE hun? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 07:52 PM PDT I am thinking of setting up a LTE hub at a cabin but my carrier uses carrier grade nat. Would it work to use a vpn to my gigabit connection at home thus giving all the devices at the cabin a public IP address? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 07:32 PM PDT Ok so I've been struggling trying to figure out why we're getting (sometimes really bad) packet loss. I'm using ping plotter to trace my information. Our network is setup like this: cable > modem > google mesh puck > everything else So when doing ping plotter my first hop is the google router. I assumed the 2nd hop was our ISP but I plugged my computer directly into the modem and figured out that it was the modem, and this is where the packet loss starts. Here is an hour or so test I did when I got home. the 10.177.0.1 is our modem our modem is a netgear CM1200 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 07:25 PM PDT I don't know what to do, what to ask, I'm just at a loss. Long story short, I have xfinity gig and for about the first year, all was fine. I was using a Netgear C7800 combo unit which I later found out was largely advised against. At any rate, it did what I needed it to, connecting the house with great speeds (hardwired internet around 950 Mbs and WiFi around 500 Mbs). That was until about six months ago. I would wake up and find I no longer had an internet connection. Initially, restarting the Netgear unit would solve the problem. It slowly progressed until even that wouldn't solve the issue. Fed up, I contacted xfinity, and they sent a tech out who tested the coax and said the signal looked fine. That was all he did. He said because I owned my own equipment, he couldn't do anything else. I was at my wits end, so I purchased an Arris SB8200 and an ASUS RT-AC86U in hopes that I just had an equipment failure and this would solve my issue. Wrong. Things were great for the first few days. Hardwired would be what you'd expect, around 960 Mbs, and WiFi was at a nice 650 Mbs. This didn't last long, though. I started noticing my speeds yesterday had decreased down to around 20 Mbs for both hardwired and WiFi. Today, the speeds are still abysmal and it seems my connection is constantly cutting in and out, connecting and disconnecting. What's going on? How do I even begin to try and diagnose this issue? I'm not super tech savvy when it comes to networking, but generally I feel I know my way around a computer. I'm going to post an image from the modem's status page below. Not sure if that looks right or can help any? Also, please let me know if pulling event logs or anything will help. I'm desperate! Thanks so much in advance! [link] [comments] |
Is this the correct 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:05 PM PDT My house was wired with Cat5e wire by the previous owner. My current internet is enters the house (1700 sq ft) in the basement and has a three foot Ethernet cable connection. I want the modem/router combo on the second floor of the house. With the modem/router in the corner of the basement the wireless signal is weak in the house. My office is on the second floor. Can I put the modem/router in my office, plug a short Ethernet cable into the modem/router and plug the other end into the wall jack in my office. Then go to the basement and connect the Ethernet cable from the office to a 8 port router I own (https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-TL-SG1008D-Unmanaged-Gigabit-Network/dp/B001EVGIYG/ref=sr_1_4?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoLP89KPH5QIVB7zACh39UAgeEAAYAiAAEgL8-PD_BwE&hvadid=241922662736&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9015329&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t2&hvqmt=e&hvrand=13632476183635018650&hvtargid=kwd-3091866223&hydadcr=24632_10399692&keywords=8-port+ethernet+switch&qid=1572551798&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin%3A7306161011%2Cp_89%3ATP-Link&rnid=2528832011&s=pc&sr=1-4) Will this work? Going backwards with the ethernet? I am guessing the cable doesn't have a front and back. Do I need a different network switch to get broadband over Ethernet to the rest of the house? Thanks, [link] [comments] |
Is it normal for 6S Plus iPhone to have slower internet download speeds than my Dell XPS laptop? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:38 PM PDT They are both connecting to the same AP, same SSID, at the same distance from the AP (3 feet). I get 71Mbps on the Dell and 47 Mbps on the phone. The AP is a new Ubiquiti AC-PRO (2.4 and 5 GHz) and I'm pretty sure both the Dell and the phone can use both 2.4 and 5 GHz. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:44 PM PDT Planning to have a contractor come in to retrofit wiring. It's mostly to serve up 3 APs (one at each floor -- located so the APs have reasonable outdoor coverage) and to centralize hardware (server, switch etc.) in a cabinet in the garage. Dedicated links to office, and media area. Current plan:
Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Options if coax connection is split outside the home Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:16 PM PDT The coax connection supplied by my ISP for cable and internet is located outside my house in a box like this. It looks like the connection is already split before each cable is routed into the house. In this situation, is it possible to have a "central location" for my cable modem and router to go? Or should I just put the modem anywhere for internet and use MoCA? [link] [comments] |
Can you plug a WiFi extender into a network switch? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:05 PM PDT I'm looking into getting Gigabit internet and I was wondering what I'd need to get it all set up. I have a WiFi extender with Ethernet ports on it at the moment, but presumably that will only give me WiFi speeds. Apart from a network card, switch, and Ethernet cable, what else would I need to do? Would I need a direct connection to the router or could I plug a switch into a WiFi extender and then plug that into my PC to get gigabit? Sorry if that's a stupid question; I don't know what I'm doing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:05 PM PDT I am trying to setup an Ethernet connection far away from my original ASUS router (all 3 ASUS routers I'm using are RT-N12's). So I have my original router connected to the network. I have another router connected to a 200' cat5 patch cable set up as another router. Then I am trying to setup the third router as an access point to plug in my device that requires an ether net cable. I am having trouble setting up the routers for that to work. I setup the second router and named it Shop 2 because the first router is called Shop. When I try and setup the third router as an access point it won't provide any internet connection but shows up on devices as it's there. I have followed some YouTube videos but they are no help. I know I need the MAC address from the second router correct? Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Serious Connecting Issues on 1 PC in my House Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:41 AM PDT Hi, I'm a student renting with 4 other people in a house for study. I use my PC a lot of gaming/my work, but for the past week I'm having an issue with my internet just droppijng out once every 5/10 minutes making it unusable. The solution to fixing it is to troubleshoot and it just resets says "The Default Gateway is Not avialable" then Fixed, its back online for another 10 minutes before going again. But the problem is its jsut my PC at any time of the day, can be 3am, can be 12pm, can be 6pm so It shouldnt be anything to do with other users on the internet or peak times in my area, and the annoying part its literally just my PC, I just am baffled. Steps Ive taken to reset it: - New Router, Sky gave us our first Router, we upgrade our package and got a second one. Both are giving us issues.
-Checked If I've done an update recently which may have caused a problem, so far nothing had updates in correlation. -Checked for New Drivers and tried olds.
Thanks for anyone trying to help this has really been a pain. PS, the Internet dropped on my computer twice while writing this post. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:56 PM PDT hi everyone :) I am not sure if what's happening to me is normal or something can be done to fix that so that's why I am here to get knowledge from the expert, please bare with me if at any part in my post I sound dumb :) my home modem/router which is the Huawei HG630 V2 (I know its a piece of crap) is what I am using to provide WiFi at my home, here is some information about my connection and WiFi that will help you understand my situation to troubleshoot the issue I am having. Connection Type: VDSL Connection Speed: 30 Download / 3 Upload WLAN Frequency Band: 2.4 GHz (Only that is supported by my router) Security mode: WPA2-PSK WPA encryption mode: AES Transmit power (percentage): 100% Transmission mode: 802.11b/g/n (No option to select N only) Channel: Auto (Tried 1,6,11 only or the rest of the channels but not a major difference) 11n MCS: Auto (my options are from 1 to 15) 11n bandwidth: 20 MHz (can select 40 or 20/40 but I want to minimize interference so 20 MHz only is selected) 11n guard interval: Long (I can select Short but I thought to minimize interference and have it on Long) now I though to provide my specs and settings first before I discuss my problem which is to give you all the details you need to know to understand my issue better down the line, I usually have like 3-4 sometimes 5 devices connected at a time but not all are being used at the same time just 2 or 3 devices maybe and not heavy usage. the devices that do connect are Laptop via WiFi Samsung TV via WiFi 2 or 3 iPhones all those devices that I listed above are all within good range from my router, just 3 or 4 meters away max which I get full signal on all my devices and speeds are really good, except for 1 iPhone device which are the farthest of them all, on that particular iPhone device it still shows WiFi signal full but the issue is that all my connected devices including this iPhone that is the farthest all there speeds is slowed down when this device is active from 30 MB connection to 1 or 2 max maybe 4 MB connection speed for all my devices, while trying to troubleshoot that myself from my Router admin page 192.168.1.1 I was able to find the WiFi link status to my Devices which shows as following My Laptop: Full signal and link 130 MB my iPhone: Full signal and link 130 MB my TV: Full signal and link 130 MB Mums iPhone (that's the Farthest Device I been talking about): Full signal or 4 out of 5 signal and link sometimes 1 MB, 6 MB, 26 MB, 52 MB, 65 MB and that's the best it can get. now most of the time it will be showing the highest link numbers is when the device is inactive and not being used or used lightly for browsing Facebook or browser search but when YouTube or streaming movies it goes down to 26 MB and keep dropping to 6 MB then 1 MB then back to 6 MB then to 26 MB etc. all that isn't a problem for me if it affects my mum's device alone because she isn't bothered really by the speed but what happens is that all my devices gets slowed down to her device link speed even though that from the router it shows my devices link is 130 MB, I have done multiple speed test from my laptop and iPhone when noticing that streaming is slow on any of my devices and found that the speed I am getting is just 1 or 2 max 4 MB for my connection and when accessing the router page I notice her link speed is down to 6 or 1 or 26 so its related to her device link speed all the devices connected gets throttled down despite having good link speed with the router and whats really strange is that it shows on her device and the router status page that her device is getting FULL signal but the link speed is only affected and I am guessing that's because there is like 3 walls in between her and the router but there is a hallway for the signal to go through but her room door is closed most of the time so I understand it might be signal interference or weakening along the way and that's why link speed drops but why only the link speed and not the Signal strength too on her device and WiFi router are still showing full signal. Would that be fixed if from the same router I enable two different SSID's, one for her device and one for all my devices so if her device link speed degrades while connected to her SSID would that affect my devices connected to the other SSID. the router supports 2 x 2 multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technologies so would that help to make the above suggestion fix work or not gonna make a difference. any help is appreciated, I know the fix is simple to get a dual-band router that supports 2.4 and 5.0, I connect my devices to the 5.0 and everyone else in the house to the 2.4 and its all good but can't afford to buy a new router now. sorry for the long post and the unusual way of typing and explaining things (English is not my first language) [link] [comments] |
Internet speed down 70% after installing Ubiquiti NanoSwitch. Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:35 PM PDT Used to get around 120mbit download speeds. I installed this switch to power a WAP and still have ports so I could connect to my regular switch, everything works fine, however internet speeds have dropped drastically to 25-40mbit. I had to introduce one new cable, so I replaced that cable but the problem still persists. Other PCs on the network are still at full speed, but the two PCs downstream of the NanoSwitch are effected. PCs are still connected at 1000mbit according to network properties. EDIT: Could the PoE injector be limiting the speed? [link] [comments] |
Moving internet/router from one house to another? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:24 PM PDT I'm not very techy, but here it goes. I have Bell wireless internet (router plugged into the wall) at my home. I'm going for a weekend to my parents cottage up north, and they don't have internet there. I need to work from home on the Monday, so I need to get internet somehow. Can I unplug my router at home, bring it to the cottage, plug it in there, and get internet for the weekend? Or how would you suggest I get internet for just one weekend? [link] [comments] |
Verizon FiOS Quantum Gateway & L2TP VPN Access Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:15 PM PDT My office operates a VPN so employees can access the file server remotely. The VPN is maintained by our office router—Peplink Balance ONE—and it is an L2TP w/ Shared Key connection. Two users, both of whom have FiOS with the Quantum gateway in their homes, are unable to connect to the office VPN. All other users, regardless of ISP or location, are able to access the office VPN without issue. For reference, I use FiOS at home with the old mi424wr Actiontec gateway and access without issues. It's not an office network issue. There are no other users experiencing a problem. It's not a FiOS issue. Any user with an older FiOS gateway is able to connect. This is specifically a Quantum gateway + L2TP connection problem. If we drop VPN security/connection to PPTP, the Quantum users are able to connect without issue. This only happens when the VPN is configured using L2TP. In an attempt to remedy, I've gone in an opened and reassigned ports within the Quantum gateway related to L2TP as well as the protocols GRE, AH, and ESP. This does not resolve the issue. Anybody had any luck? [link] [comments] |
New router - Ubiquiti vs pfsense (opnsense) Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:00 PM PDT Pros and cons to both software wise? I did the math on this and over the lifetime of the unit I would pay about the same for the Ubiquiti device vs using an old server and paying the extra power costs incurred from the high powered free hardware. Either way I'll likely purchase a Ubiquiti AP once those are released in wifi 6. For now I'll be turning my AC88U from router mode to AP mode for wifi. [link] [comments] |
Confusion picking a new router for 200mbps... Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:56 PM PDT I've really had a hard time doing my research on what will work well in my house. We recently upgraded to 200mbps internet speed and I want to take as full advantage of it as possible. Essentially all of our devices are wireless, 4 people in the home who all use phones, but I'd like to at least have a couple ports on the router for a few smart hubs (like hue) etc., I am cord cutting so would like to be able to stream 4k to two devices, I also game online with PS4. I currently have a TP-link AC1750 but want to upgrade to a mesh type router. What are some good options? The research I did was tough trying to understand how speeds are different on each bands and how having multiple bands makes things more seamless. I'm basically trying to take advantage of the 200mbps and future proof for higher end streaming and home automation devices like cameras, etc. [link] [comments] |
Intermittent Issues Connecting To Websites Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:53 PM PDT About four or five days ago, I started having issues with my home network. Anywhere from 1-5 times a day, I'll suddenly be unable to connect to webpages. It happens on every device on the network (PC connected via Ethernet, laptop connected via wifi, Android phone connected via wifi), and with any browser I try. The issue will persist for 1-2 hours, and then will always spontaneously resolve itself. It usually seems to only affect websites, so things such as Steam chat (but not Steam Store), Discord, Spotify, etc seem to work during this time. My first thought was obviously an issue with DNS servers, but switching to different DNS servers does not resolve the issue. Interestingly, even while I'm having these issues, webpages will still load if I browse through my VPN. My ISP also uses a Carrier-Grade NAT, in case this is relevant. Quick overview of what works and doesn't work while the issue is occurring:
Things I've tried:
Any ideas? EDIT: I've also tried looking at Wireshark while the issue is happening vs when it's not, the most striking difference is that when I try to connect to google.ca while the issue is happening, Wireshark is filled with a lot of "Destination Unreachable (Communication administratively filtered)" messages. The source IP seems to be some kind of IP owned by my ISP, and the Destination IP is my local IP address. Though, I don't really know anything at all about Wireshark, so maybe this is normal.
