Posted: 29 Oct 2019 04:18 PM PDT I noticed that I came home from work, set my bag down, and went about my afternoon. I checked my TP Link Omada app and saw my MacBook Pro connected on its own to our home WiFi. I always thought power nap was for AC connected only. I also tried using the "Find My" app on my phone and it was successful. It updated my laptop location from work to home. Anyways, I found that interesting. I would have assumed an always on WiFi would have murdered its battery life. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:30 AM PDT I'm upgrading my home network and am trying to save a bit on buying a separate POE switch for the wireless APs and cameras I will be installing. Is there any downside to running these directly off the router? I plan to implement multiple vlans (kids, IOT, security, lab, guest, etc) and want to be sure I'm not shooting myself in the foot by being cheap on a separate POE switch. I do not foresee the need to for POE beyond 4-5 cameras and two APs and maybe a pihole). Proposed hardware $506
Or Separate each out $555

Google Photos video upload slowing entire network Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:19 PM PDT I have ~800/30 bandwidth with a NETGEAR R7800 X4S behind an Xfinity Gateway (or w/e it's called) set to just pass the connection to the R7800. When backing up videos from a Pixel 2 using the Google Photos app, the entire network slows down significantly. My ping in games went from ~20 to ~200. I've never seen any upload essentially kill the network like this. I'm not even sure how it's doing it, considering the upload bandwidth is only 30. Is this likely a bug with router firmware? Or perhaps Google Photos is downloading a significant amount of data (for w/e reason) when an upload is running? I don't have QoS enabled as I never needed it. Anyone run into something similar and find out a way to fix it? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:55 PM PDT Wall fishing that is. I've had reliable but mediocre experience with PowerLine adapters and want to improve upon my current situation getting internet from my living room to my office at the other end of my 1100 sq-ft urban condo. I own it, so in theory I could go fishing and run Cat 5e or 6 horizontally the entire way. (Vertically up to an attic is not an option. Ditto for running down to a basement or craw space.) Or I could go MoCa. Or I could go Wireless APs or Mesh. What do for maximizing speed and minimizing stress and cost outlay? Assume I have no stud finder, no fishing rod, no dry wall cutters, no drill, or any other "exotic" tools beyond the basic toolset. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:29 PM PDT I'm probably asking a question you're tired of hearing. I have a netgear nighthawk ac1750 that has been cutting out lately and I constantly have to unplug it. What's a dependable router preferable under $200. There's easily 15 devices connected to it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ftpUDbAFYX0AK [link] [comments] |
Separate network for IoT devices? Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:25 PM PDT I'm looking for a new router that would allow me to create additional networks to put IoT devices on so they're partitioned from my laptop and such. I've seen some suggest to just use a guest network, but I'd rather that just be for guests. Is there a router out there that will either allow me to create multiple guest networks or (even better) create more networks with customizable permissions? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

will multiple switches solve my problem? Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:06 PM PDT My 'server' room is in my basement laundry room - the demarcation point for the fiber line is here. I have plugged in the internet provider modem (with built in wifi), my synology NAS, a couple of security cameras and a switch. From the switch, I have to home office computers, the tv box and a network printer. On wifi, an upstairs tv box, along with numerous phones, tablets and a couple more laptops. Everthing was working - until I moved the modem to the basement - because the apartment has ethernet cabling - before that, everything was running wifi and the modem was on the middle floor (of a 3 floor place). I wanted network performance for the office computers which are on floor 3. Those are ethernet connected. Anyway... when the modem went downstairs, the up stairs wifi (tv, chromecast and tablets) all went to poor performance. I then added tp-link RE450 to give me new wifi upstairs. Worked fine for a week, now I'm having something 'kill' the entire (and original) network - I get internet, but can't access the NAS or even the modem by IP - just dead. Give it a bit and everything returns normal. Curious - could I return the modem to the 2nd floor - since the house is wired, I could put a switch on floor 2 - then the modem, the 2nd floor tv box and the printer can run from there. My original wifi would be stronger upstairs and return that to 'normal'. upstairs (floor 3) would still have the office computers on ethernet, and floor 1 would still have a switch with the security camers and NAS connected. Any suggestions would be awesome.. this current setup is a bit frustrating when it dies out. [link] [comments] |
Router: Any consumer brands that are more "secure" than others? Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:43 PM PDT I'm considering a rethink of my home network. Before I start thinking about APs vs. Mesh vs. MoCa, etc. I want to know if there any brands these days that stand out from a security perspective? For example, regular firmware updates and patching? (My T-Mobile ASUS AC-1900 has never received a fw upgrade but has otherwise been a fine router.) Or is DD-WRT the only way to go in terms of best security? Leading brands I'm reading about include ASUS, Ubiquiti, TP Link, Google/Nest (how secure can Google be?). Similarly, is there such thing as a "secure" modem that offers better security/updates versus other brands? I've got a 2 bedroom, 1100 sq-ft (split level) city condo with two PCs, two wireless laptops, two smartphones, one NAS but unable at this time to "fish" CAT 5e/6 from one side to the other. Thanks. [Wired network] Definition of a drop Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:38 PM PDT Hi all -- When I get Cat 6 network install quotes from the low voltage guys I need to say how many "drops" I need. Question: If I want a four jack wall plate in a particular location, is that four drops or one? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2019 02:48 PM PDT Hey everyone! I dont know if this is appropriate here but I was hoping to get some opinions. I work as an assistant network engineer while going to school (computer science degree). I'm very interested in networking and messing around with a home lab. I'm new to the home lab concept. Please forgive me if I say something stupid. If there is a better way to do something, please let me know. I'm so eager to learn and dont mind AT ALL, anyone pointing out my mistakes.

Help with VLAN implementation on home network Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:32 PM PDT TLDR; Is VLAN necessary for home networks? Im fairly new to the home network game and I finally noticed that my house has ether net jacks and coax jacks in a lot of rooms. I am installing a router and switch at the main "hub" so I can connect ethernet cables to a couple desktops and a few WAPs for wifi use. From watching some youtube videos I began thinking I should set up VLANs on my network to keep wireless and wired traffic seperate for a more efficient network... is this necessary since there is already a clear distinction between wireless and wired traffic? Im having trouble finding an answer [link] [comments] |
Want to ditch Xfinity router - coax to ethernet issue Posted: 29 Oct 2019 10:14 AM PDT Is it possible to convert internet from coaxial output from my wall to ethernet input into my modem? I am currently paying monthly for Xfinity's router because I have a Linksys EA7400. I can't currently use this because my internet comes out of a coax cable, and this router only has ethernet inputs. Posted: 29 Oct 2019 05:26 PM PDT Obviously more to the issue than just the title. Recently moved into a new house and had a tech from Spectrum come to set up the network today when I was not home and my cousin was. We're paying for 400/20 speeds and are using the ISP modem with our Netgear Nighthawk R6700. Phones are consistently getting 250+mbps on 5GHz wifi and laptops are hitting that speed on wifi as well. My cousin's PC is getting 400-450mbps on a wired Cat6 connection about 15 feet from the router. My PC is getting (very consistent, almost capped) speeds around 150-170mbps wired. I checked the same Cat6 cable that I am using on my laptop and it was pulling 400-450mbps. I noticed that the ethernet port on my motherboard is a solid orange light when in my previous setups I am almost 100% certain it was solid green. (MSI z87-G41 PCMate). Uninstalled LAN drivers and reinstalled with no good results. Anyone have any advice on what I should do? I have absolutely no clue why my computer isn't reaching normal speeds, have had 300 and 500mbps lines in previous houses and it pulls those speeds just fine. [link] [comments] |
Do wireless access points have ethernet ports? Posted: 29 Oct 2019 05:06 PM PDT Basically my modem is upstairs, but wifi doesnt reach downstairs. I want to put an AP downstairs. However I have a PC that I want to connect with ethernet downstairs. Can I conject the AP to the modem and then the PC to the AP? Or do I have to get a switch? Or maybe get another router and use it as an AP? [link] [comments] |
Issues with HD attached to router (Nighthawk 7960P) Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:12 PM PDT Hello everyone, I've been trying to set up a hard drive (currently a 1 TB seagate USB 3.0 drive to my Netgear Nighthawk 7960P via the USB 3.0 outlet. Here's what happens - everything works perfectly, i can easily stream all my music and video over WiFi including my newer 4k T.V. Great, perfect. Then, I leave for a while and the hard drive powers itself down but does not re-awaken without unplugging/replugging into router. So, my computer is smart enough to be able to look at the meta data quickly but the t.v. doesn't seem so smart so it starts redownloading everything when I try to access through Roku Media Player (Would a different media player app work better??) The result is I have to wait ~30-45 minutes for 400 gb of video to load before I can even browse my selection. The folders don't even load until the file is playable on the t.v. I called Netgear tech support and they just told me the hard drive was hot and it shuts itself down and their only solution after ~30 minutes was to unplug when not in use and plug in well-in-advance of when you expect to watch a movie...not really a great technical support response. Basically, you can't access your media unless you see into the future/remember to plug in your hard drive such that it syncs by the time you want to watch it.... Do I need a powered hard drive that is designed to be in use at all times? Suggestions? Different media player? What's the fix here so I don't have to plug in / out my hard drive all the time and re-sync? I appreciate you all for your help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2019 12:32 PM PDT Really frustrated right now. I have 1 Gig/50Up with WowWay. I get the 1 Gig speed off my IMac with it hard wired. But I'm getting lost sped across other devices in my home. Using Speedtest on my phone and getting high speeds one time and the next crappy ones. Use to have an Linksys Ea9500 which was great but seems to be slowing down as well. Ended up replacing that with 2 Asus RT86U in AiMesh mode which seem to be doing fine in the beginning but now inconsistent. Went and bought the Netgear RA80x today as wasn't impress with those speed. So now I've decided to go to Micro center to get some Ubiquiti Access Points. So I have a 2 hour window for advice. Should I get a gateway to use with the Access points or just use my Ea9500 and turn the Wi-Fi off. And should I get the Lite or Pro. Just a quick rundown on my house. 1300 sq foot. 9 security wireless camera, 2 Smart TVs, IPads and iPhones. Just want consistent speeds and reliability. Not to rush any advice but hopefully I can solved this today. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Constancy having to reset router Posted: 29 Oct 2019 03:40 PM PDT I just bought an Asus RT-AC3100 router, and I'm having to reset it twice a day to have good quality wifi. After about 6 hours my devices start running slow and sometimes wont even load pages until I reset it. Once I reset the router it works perfectly for half a day then starts to slow down again. It this a ram issue with the router itself or something different? Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2019 03:20 PM PDT Hi All, First post here but needed some advice. I moved into a new build that came with 'pre-installed' smart home features. The whole home is hardwired and has a closet that essentially has a network switch as well as a router on the top floor. Our ISP provides gigabit internet and I currently have coming out of the ethernet in our upstairs office with a Netgear R7800 which is dedicated to my gaming PC/office. The home came preinstalled with called Arkanis Wireless router and a wireless access point, this is installed on the middle floor and broadcasts its own wireless network (much slower than the Netgear network). My biggest issue here is our smart home devices are on this network and it absolutely struggles to reach even our Ring Doorbell among other things, even with the access point directly above it one floor up. I am looking for a network solution where I can use the ethernet port on the bottom floor to further boost the signal, I also am wondering if abandoning the their wireless access point and purchasing this would further improve my situation ( https://www.microcenter.com/product/608712/netgear-nighthawk-x6-ex7700-ac2200-tri-band-wifi-mesh-range-extender ) I can't quite figure out what the best solution would be given I have ethernet access in every room, boosting my network to cover more of the home should be easy? Ideally I would love to have a great mesh system from my R7800 and completely turn off the Arknis Wireless. [link] [comments] |
Pc's on network not playing nice. Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:38 AM PDT I'm hoping someone can provide some insight, I've been bamboozled by my network. I have my main pc, gigabit lan via bonded moca 2.0 adapters to my trendnet unmanaged gigabit switch. I have a SuperMicro Nas running OMV that's also hardwired to my switch, and I have a Intel nuc(nuc7i7bnh) under my tv that's got plex on it, also hardwired. I transfer all my stuff from my main pc to my Nas like backing up family photos and videos, and send movies and tv shows to my nuc. I have the drives mapped on my main pc to keep things simple. Here's where it gets weird. From my main pc I'm transferring to/from my Nas full speed,90-110MB/s. From my nuc I'm transferring to/from my Nas at about the same rate, 80-100MB/s.(just did this for troubleshooting, I usually only access my Nas from my main pc.) My main pc to/from my nuc it's capping out super low, 18-20MB/s. Just under 200mbps. The drive on my nuc can handle file copies at gigabit speeds, I've tested copies locally on the nuc with my boot ssd and it's transferring in the low 100 MB/s. My main pc has a two TB ssd. The link speed on both pc's show connected at 1gbps. I've been troubleshooting with large 3-4GB files, I know it's usually slower with multiple small files. I've tried a new cables. I tried resetting the network adapters. Rebooted the switch. It doesn't seem(?) like a hardware issue, but I don't know enough about networking to look further into it. On both windows machines everything shows idle before transferring files. Nothing is hogging cpu time or network time. Does anyone have any insights or expertise to lend a hand with? I appreciate all the help I can get! [link] [comments] |
Router with 4G dongle failover? Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:36 PM PDT I'm searching for a good router for my cable connection at home, with support for a 4G usb dongle as a failover, in case the cable connection goes down. ASUS seem to have this capability, but from what I can read, it's pretty broken. Which router can actually handle this, and also 4 LAN ports and a wireless AC connection? [link] [comments] |
Can I plug comcast modem in bridge mode to a switch, then attach 2 routers to the switch? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 08:46 PM PDT I tried this config and failed miserably: Xfinity modem in bridge mode connected to a gigabit switch. To the switch I have two separate modems, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. As I'm going through the Netgear setup wizard it's unable to establish a connection. Do I need to plug a router directly into the modem as the first device when using bridge mode? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2019 11:06 AM PDT Those idiots want $5 for wifi. So, I am thinking of using my own equipment. What hardware would you recommend for router and modem? need AP upgrades with ssid vlan tag support Posted: 29 Oct 2019 10:53 AM PDT Hi folks. Looking for consumer / prosumer grade wireless APs for my home network. - need ability to create 2 - 3 wifi ssids - guest wifi optional - need ability to mesh the APs together - need vlan tag support for wifi ssids created - APs will be hard-wired into managed switches - no firewall functionality required (already have firewall) Is Ubiquiti the only options here? What other options are out there? [link] [comments] |
