    Question about grep

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:02 PM PDT

I'm very new to this reddit. I'm also a beginning linux user. I have question about grep. I know that '*' is a wildcard that is supposed to replace any characters in the search. However, I am trying to search for lines (php comments) that contain an asterisk. Specifically

    /* Posts */

I can't find a way to search this using grep. Any help would be appreciated.

Help understanding error message on Toshiba Satellite C855D?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:37 PM PDT

    Hello, all.

    I've got a Toshiba Satellite C855D that runs Windows 8, I think.

When attempting to run Ubuntu without installing it (to test it out first), I get the following message:

[0.004000] do_IRQ: 1.55 No ire handler for vector

    [18.272671] Problem loading UEFI:db X.509 certificate (-65)

I successfully used the same USB stick to install Ubuntu on an old Dell Inspiron B130 yesterday, so I don't know what I'm missing.

    Thanks.

    Staying anonymous

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:03 AM PDT

Hi Reddit :) M1kyyy here. I will cut right to the chase: How does one stay anonymous in the Internet on the linux? What browser should I use? Should I configure my firewall in specific way? What I would like to achieve is: not beong tracked by google etc. For example when I check a new product on monday, the next day I see many adds regarding this product. I would like to avoid that. So my question is not how to stay 100% anonymous but rather how not to be tracked during usuall activities? Cheers :)

Back to Fedora after ~10yrs. My new install is on /sdb. Is this going to cause problems for a complete noob?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:52 PM PDT

I am fed up with windows and decided to start playing around with linux again after ~10 years. This is not a dual boot. Old windows hard drive died, bought a new 500gb SSD and tried to install Kubuntu from a live usb. Got a fatal error. Went through several different physical usbs trying Kubuntu, Ubuntu, and Mint. No usb/distro combo worked. Finally tried Fedora. Installed fine on the first try. Now that I'm starting to play around with it and reteach myself a few things, I noticed that my disks are as follows:

    sda 8:0 0 3.7T 0 disk

    └─sda1 8:1 0 3.7T 0 part /run/media/****/791474F850D89F49

    sdb 8:16 0 465.8G 0 disk

    ├─sdb1 8:17 0 1G 0 part /boot

    ├─sdb2 8:18 0 7.9G 0 part [SWAP]

    ├─sdb3 8:19 0 50G 0 part /

    ├─sdb4 8:20 0 1K 0 part

    └─sdb5 8:21 0 406.9G 0 part /home

    sdc 8:32 0 931.5G 0 disk

    └─sdc1 8:33 0 931.5G 0 part /run/media/****/2DCBDF1D30A397A2

/sdb is the 500gb SSD with Fedora installed. Is this a problem? Is this a problem for a noob who has to look up every single thing he is doing right now? Will it confuse all the troubleshooting I will be doing over the next week?

As an aside, I'm trying to play around with plex. I am trying to create a library with tv shows that are on /sda1. They are named in accordance with plex standards and i think i have the permissions correct, but I can't get anything to show up in the library. Is there anything in the above information that would explain my difficulties?

    Core i5-6600k on Fedora 28

    Thanks in advance!

    Getting back into Linux!

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 10:03 AM PDT

My windows 10 tower is running like a total POS and I'm tempted to go back to my uni days of Ubuntu. This is probably a can of worms, but what Debian distros are recommended for easy and reliable hardware setup, every day use and stability? Also, is Netflix able to run on it (this is one of the reasons I left Ubuntu 10 years ago). Does wine run better now?

    Having trouble with awk/sed

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:42 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm sure this post title looks familiar... \>.\>

Anyway, [paste here](https://paste.linux.community/view/c707b6a0) if you just want to get right into it!

Long story short, I'm using SmartGit, which has a free for personal use license. However, when you install it, apparently it gives you a 30 day "free" trial of the commercial license, and then it starts bugging you to buy it. To fix it, you have to uninstall and reinstall.

I just found a few posts about deleting an object from the settings.xml file for SmartGit, which does fix the problem. I wanted to script this, but for the life of me can't get it to work with sed or awk. I was hoping someone with more experience could tell me what I'm doing wrong.

    Thanks!

Help Noob messed up not sure how to fix (Early 2009 iMac OSX El Capitan)

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 09:51 AM PDT

Hi, I hope this finds you all well. I recently found out about Linux and fell in love with Elementary OS, so I did the normal thing and used a USB to try it. I really enjoyed what saw. So I thought I would take the next step. I partitioned my hard drive and then ran the installer did the reformatting of the partitions like the instructions said, but when it came to booting up the computer could not find/use the partition with Elementary OS on it. So I looked for a way to make it bootable but I just fully understand. So I thought okay, just get rid of the partitions and jump in with both feet when I get everything backed up and when I'm fully ready to take dive I'll do a full install.

Okay so what I need help with is getting rid of the partitions. Mac wont allow me to erase them and make one full hard drive again... The picture is what it tells me and when I do the repairs nothing changes. Anyone know how I can reverse what I've done? Thanks for you time and patience I really appreciate any help.

Can't write to NFS Mount - Permission denied

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 06:05 AM PDT

When I try to write to an NFS share i am getting "Permission denied". I am having a hard time trying to figure out whey I can't write to a share mounted on my (raspberry pi). I have repeated the same test on my Debian system and Antergos system and both work just fine. I know there is r/raspberry_pi but I felt it would be better suited here. If I am wrong my mistake.

The steps that I have taken are:

    • On my FreeNAS system I have a dataset, backups, shared by NFS with a group, Admins, GID 9999
    • On my pi I have done the following
      • Made sure that "nfs-common" was installed
        • ii nfs-common 1:1.3.4-2.1 armhf NFS support files common to client
      • Created the group with a gid of 9999
        • sudo groupadd -g 9999 Admins
      • Add the user to the group
        • sudo adduser pi Admins
      • I rebooted instead of just loggin out/in
      • I then mounted the share
      • check to make sure it mounted
        • Before the mount

    pi@WikiPi:~ $ ls -lh /mnt

    total 4.0K

    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Aug 13 18:56 nas-backups

    • after the mount

    pi@WikiPi:~ $ ls -lh /mnt

    total 512

    drwxrwxr-x 2 root Admins 5 Aug 14 20:14 nas-backups

    • Made sure it mounted and showed the files I made from the other 2 systems

    pi@WikiPi:~ $ ls /mnt/nas-backups

    test test138 test3423

    • I tried to write to it.

    pi@WikiPi:~ $ touch /mnt/nas-backups/file123

touch: cannot touch '/mnt/nas-backups/file123': Permission denied

    • I even gave "sudo" a try

    pi@WikiPi:~ $ sudo touch /mnt/nas-backups/files123

touch: cannot touch '/mnt/nas-backups/files123': Permission denied

    • I can read from the share

    pi@WikiPi:~ $ cat /mnt/nas-backups/test3423

    this is a test

I have check and rechecked. I feel like I am over looking something but can't put my finger on it since the other 2 systems can read/write but this one can only read. These are the same steps I have taken on the other 2 systems.

    Thanks.

Alright, dumb question incoming. This arrow randomly appeared in my top right corner just below the gui like a week ago and has not gone away since. It's visible over whatever window I'm on always. I have no idea what it is, but I just want to know how to get rid of it. I'm running ubuntu if that helps at all.

PROBLEM SOLVED! It was a quick notes applet that caused the issue. Removing the applet and restarting my computer fixed the problem. Thanks!

When you watch a YouTube video in fullscreen, or play a game, notifications do not appear.

Is there anyway to change this? I've tried out Budgie, and that worked fine with notifications.

Getting strange audio behavior/failure in Fedora.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:52 AM PDT

Running fedora 28 on an asus zenbook ux461un. Whenever I start up the machine and play audio (from either youtube or rhythmbox or aplay or whatever), it'll sound good/normal for about a second. Then the quality will distort and get a bit scratchy and muffled for a few seconds, then audio will cease entirely. However, looking at alsa/pavucontrol stuff, it seems that the machine can't tell that anything's wrong. I had been having this problem for over a month now, then about a week ago it went away after an update. After updating again today (and adding rpm fusion repos for a codec), the problem suddenly came back. Does anyone know what kind of problems can cause this phenomenon, or how to fix it? It's really frustrating not having a clue where the problem originates.

What format for linux boot partition?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:42 AM PDT

I just shrunk my windows partition down as much as I could, and want to assign a small amount of the unallocated space so I can dual boot.

But when I try to format the partition the only options Windows gives me are NTFS and exFAT. I thought the way to go for linux was ext4? When I install Ubuntu or Mint will it reformat the partition for me?

*Some* Programs can't detect my video card

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:02 AM PDT

I've seen this problem in threads but the solutions are for windows and need the NVIDIA 3D Control Panel to run the program with the graphics card you have. I can't seem to find an equivalent on x server settings.

It's not the same problem as the PC using onboard graphics for everything, it only applies to a few programs.

E:It seems to consistently misidentify as Geforce GT 8800 or something similar E: I've tried to change the auto/onboard graphics settings in the bios as well

    Kdenlive Crashes On Start

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 10:57 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm trying to maybe use Kdenlive instead of Sony Vegas for my video editing. If I can succeed I can fully get away from Windows.

However, when I launch it, it instantly crashes. Here is what the terminal spits out:

Shortcut for action "rename" "Rename" set with QAction::setShortcut()! Use KActionCollection::setDefaultShortcut(s) instead. Removing cache at "/home/daniel/.cache/kdenlive-thumbs.kcache" org.kde.multimedia.kdenlive: /// ARGH, requesting nullptr track: 1 - MAX is: 1 Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Any ideas on what's going wrong and how to fix it?

PS: Are there any video editors you guys have used that compare to Vegas? I've tried using Kdenlive before and it seems to be just much weaker overall with less functionality.

    Thanks in advance!

Cannot set a specific keyboard shortcut (Shift+Hyper+2 aka Hyper+@).

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:10 AM PDT

I am using Manjaro KDE on an XPS 13 9360.

I am trying to emulate i3wm keyboard shortcuts with Hyper as my "mod" key. e.g:

    • Hyper+3 to move to virtual desktop 3

    • Shift+Hyper+1 to move currently focused window to virtual desktop 1

    I can map Shift+Hyper+(number) for the numbers 1, 3, 4, ... , 9, 0 except for the number 2 for some reason.

Note: I have remapped my CapsLock key to Hyper through Settings -> Input Devices -> Advanced Tab -> CapsLock behaviour -> "Make CapsLock an additional Hyper"

I don't think there are conflicts with other keyboard shortcuts as KDE notifies you if this is the case, however I can't rule out this possibility as I cannot know that for sure.

file sharing between linux and windows via ethernet cable

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:03 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

Please, I need help setting up my linux mint 19 (cinnamnon) - 32bit

I am a new user of Linux, I installed it this week in my notebook and I am trying to transfer my backup that is in another notebook (Windows 7 Starter) to this one.

I'm struggling with the terminal, and having difficulty setting up samba ...

my intention is to use an Ethernet cable to transfer the files (due to its transfer rate, I imagine it is the best option)

    Can you help me?

I do not know what information could be the most relevant, so I'll share the configuration of smb.conf that I believe is relevant:

Looking for a video archiving solution

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 09:29 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I'm nothing but a linux enthusiast and I try to sneak in linux adoption and implementation whenever I can at work.

The IT team is looking for various means to save more storage space. Video files have been targeted as a file type to throw more policies on and possibly remove.

During our meeting today, I was daydreaming of setting up a server that users can upload their videos to and run a cron job that will compress the files, delete the old, and push the new compressed file via Samba to the main Windows server.

I just feel so bad for everyone because they're suffering and our at the mercy of Windows OS limitations. Any ideas? Is there like a h264 encoder program in yum or something?
