General "Best laptop for the price" question

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:45 AM PDT

Hello! So, My father's laptop is getting a bit old and starting to slow down. I want to buy him a new one. He just uses it for email, finances, Youtube, and your general browsing of the internet. He has been a PC guy his whole life and I don't think he would personally want any Apple products.

Would be willing to spend around 1k without taxes.

Clueless High School Junior Looking For Recommendation Of A Laptop To Produce Music On (Possibly for gaming as well) And Eventually Bring To College

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:56 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

-No idea. Can be pretty flexible when it comes to price, I just don't know how much they generally cost. U.S.-

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

-No specific requirements, just a decent battery life.-

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

-Preferably on the lighter, thinner side but again, I can be flexible as long as it's not overly heavy/thick.-

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux?**

-I do not know the differences between these besides a few minor differences in Mac and Windows.-

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    -N/A-

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

-As stated in the title, I'm planning to produce music (rap) and possibly play a few games, but the gaming part isn't as important because I already have an Xbox One. If a cheaper price means less games that I'm able to play, I'm okay with that. When it comes to the producing part, I have no knowledge of programs or how to work them.-

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

-As stated above, there aren't any games in particular I'd plan to play and the settings aren't a high priority.-

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

-The highest priority is to make sure it will last a while. I'll be using it for years and I want to get everything out of it that I can. A decent mousepad and keyboard would also be greatly appreciated.-

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

-I am not knowledgeable on laptops so when it comes to hardware/software, there's a good chance I'll be clueless. I will greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks-

Lenovo Legion Y520 CPU temp way too high?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:31 PM PDT

So, I bought this laptop (I7 7700HQ , GTX 1060, 16 GB RAM) about 3 weeks ago and I've noticed that while playing some heavy games such as GTA V, Mafia 3 & Witcher 3, the CPU gets to 90 C. I can see from HWMonitor that it's only one core that goes to 90, another to 85 and the other two stay at 80.

I have my laptop lifted up on my desk, so the airflow is not obstructed, I run the Extreme Cooling option from the Lenovo program and I have undervolted my CPU as much as I can.

I was thinking about getting a cooling pad, but they usually only drop the temp by around 2-3 degrees, so it's still gonna run hot. Room temperature is also around 18 C.

Is it normal for you other people who have this laptop for the CPU to get so hot?

Should I return it to the store?

Which one of these 3 laptops should I get?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:13 PM PDT

    1. Lenovo Yoga 920 14: i7-8550u, 13.9" FHD touch display, 8GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM, 512GB SSD, Intel UHD 620 graphics. $1670 CAD. 360 degree hinge (2 in 1 form factor)

    2. HP Envy x360 13z: AMD Ryzen 7 2700u, 13.3" 4k touch screen, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD, Vega 10 graphics. $1170 USD ( about $1540 CAD) including pen. 360 degree hinge (2 in 1 form factor).

    3. Dell XPS 13: i7-8550u, 13.3" 4k touchscreen, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, 256GB SSD, Intel UHD 620 graphics. $1550 CAD. Clamshell form factor.

Looking for a laptop that I can use for school and programming/algorithm courses as well as other daily tasks. I wish for my new laptop to last me 4+ years.

    Thanks in advance.

Most light weight laptop with at least a GTX 1050 for under 1000 €

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 04:10 AM PDT

I need something that won't break my back or bank but still allows me to do a bit of gaming. A 1050 is sort of the bare minimum, so I'm also interested in the lightest laptop with a 1060!

Will excessive heat destroy my machine?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:28 PM PDT

I was intending on buying the ASUS Zenbook Pro UX550. I'm mainly doing casual tasks and software development with occasional 1-2 hours of playing games, usually not very demanding (like Rainbow Six Siege). But I watched a video on YouToube and read several reports that it's not cooled all that well for gaming - which I totally understand, I'm not a gamer myself. But RS:Siege at max settings gives about 63FPS after hour of gaming on that machine. Now my question is: if I get that laptop, could I actually game on it for hour or two every few days? Or will the excessive heat kill it? I'm mostly used to desktops where excessive heat usually means just thermal throttling or whole machine turning off if things get really, really bad but in laptops (especially this compact) components are really close to each other. Is there a real danger of destroying such laptop or seriously degrading its lifespan?

    Windows vs. Ubuntu?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:56 AM PDT

Sorry if this is the wrong sub for this but I was wondering whether or not to but Ubuntu on my laptop. It runs fine and is only about a month and a half old so it's not like I would do it to improve performance. I've just never used any Ubuntu distros before and wanted to know how it compares to windows. Personally I don't mind windows that much but I know a lot of people seem to like Ubuntu better.

I primarily use my laptop for work (MS office suite) and other basic stuff. Sometimes games but only on Roll 20. Would I still be able to run Office with Ubuntu? What are the downsides and upsides of having that installed?

    Ux430un temp lock

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:29 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I have recently bought the asus UX430un and I absolutely loved it. It nearly checks every item on my list except for a small problem. My main usage is not gaming but i also want to game on the side. Unfortunately i found out that the gpu temp is limited and as of right now i can't return the laptop. Limited GPU is so annoying because i am experiencing stutter nearly every 30 seconds. So is there a way to remove the temp limits and use the gpu more efficiently ? Thank you for your help

    Best Regards,

FYI: I have updated the BIOS and downloaded the latest updates.

    ASUS Ubunu Dualboot

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 09:50 AM PDT

So I bought the new Asus with the 'Screenpad' (yes the gimmick one) but when I booted up Ubuntu from USB the touchpad didn't work at all, I expected there to be some issues but not with default touchpad mode. I tried using a plug and play wireless mouse to no avail, furthermore none of the volume/brightness keys work.

Has anyone experienced these issues before? Any ideas on how to fix this? Any subreddits that might be better suited for this question?

    Thanks

CAD 800$ tax in for Thinkpad E580 i7 8gb 500gb (I will have to get an ssd I know)

It's used but they have the box and it looks barely touched, aside from careful inspection and checking bios pass anything else I should be cautious of? Is this a good deal considering it's pretty much new?

    XPS 15 vs X1 Carbon

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 05:49 AM PDT

I've been searching for a new laptop for work - video conferences, MS Office work, some Adobe CC for mock ups, etc. The XPS looks like a more powerful machine, but the X1 comes in a higher price point. Other than the SSD size, I dont see what the benefits of the X1 over the XPS are. Am I missing something here? It is because the X1 is quieter and lighter or something?

Looking for a 2 in 1 laptop that does nothing fancy

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 02:08 AM PDT

I'm hoping someone here can provide some insight on a good choice for a budget laptop that will be used exclusively for school. I am looking for something with min 500 GBs storage, touchscreen capability and good general build quality. This will not be used for any gaming or anything that will be taxing on the system. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

    Laptop for College?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:52 AM PDT

Hello, I´m new to this sub. I was looking at a bunch of laptops since mine is a piece of crap that can only handle 1 presentation open at a time. Could you recommend a laptop that does the normal college stuff? Office, video streaming, browsing, email and can multitask all of these? I really want the computer to feel snappy and fast. I don´t have a specific budget but I will not edit videos, game on it or anything of the sort.

is this laptop good? if not whats a better similar one

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 03:44 AM PDT

I have decided to go with the Acer Swift 3 but can't decide between two models.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2018 06:31 AM PDT

There are two 14 inch models that I like, the older SF314-52G-55WQ and the newer SF314-54G815P . I will be using it during college for coding and gaming. Is it worth getting the newer model that is $200 more? Will the faster CPU just thermal throttle and be wasted? What are your opinions?
