    Simple Questions - March 19, 2018

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 05:18 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

My first build; a Wall-mounted Behemoth

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 09:01 AM PDT

After lurking some time in this sub, I've slowly started to build my own "battle station".

A wall mounted pc always looked appealing to me. So... after tinkering some time, I've came up with this (excuse me for the potato like quality). I'm still not 100% happy with the result, but it's acceptable nonetheless.

Already I'm thinking about a new project, a desk with a computer build inside. But that's for another time, for now I'm gonna enjoy playing games at a higher quality.

    The components are:

    - Motherboard: Z370 Extreme4

    - CPU: I5-8600k

    - RAM: Nighthawk 3000Mhz 16gb

    - GPU: MSI Aero GTX1080

    - PSU: EVGA Supernova 550W

    - SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500gb

    - CPU & GPU watercooled with the kit from EKWB

And we're done! Budget $800 CAD($615 USD) Ryzen 5 2400G Build, thank you all!

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 12:37 PM PDT

A major thank you to everyone! The build itself was a pretty smooth process, I ran into some software issues though that some of you helped me out on and I really appreciate it. It's amazing how much you can learn by just lurking around subreddits for awhile haha.

I was aiming for a simplistic look with this build, I ended up routing half of the LED's I previously had underneath my monitor stand inside the case and it turned out great.

Below is everything I bought for $800 CAD. Not sure if there is a correct format for this post so my apologies beforehand.

    • Case: Corsair 270R
    • Motherboard: MSI Tomahawk B350
    • APU: Ryzen 5 2400G w/ Radeon RX Vega 11 Integrated Graphics
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB)
    • PSU: EVGA 450 BT, 80+ Bronze 450W
    • HDD: SeaGate BarraCuda 1TB 3.5", SATA III
    • Keyboard: Logitech G213
    • WiFi Adapter: Wise Tiger WiFi Adapter AC 600Mbps

Here's photos of the build: https://imgur.com/a/7VlRH

    Cheers!

EDIT: Add me on Fortnite if you want to play! ANVCO - I promise I'm half decent at the game lmao

Ryzen R5 1600 - GTX 1070 Build. Win 10 installed now will not post.

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 02:44 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

So this afternoon i built a PC for the first time. Pretty standard fair with a R5 1600 and an MSI Gaming X 1070. There is a Cougar 650 watt 80+ Gold psu, Asus Prime 370 Pro motherboard and a 240mm Masterliquid AOI. Win 10 was installed on a samsung 850 evo 500gb. As well as Steam, Speccy, Super Anti Spyware, and Rust (the game).

I put it together and low and behold it booted straight up into bios. I installed win 10 as per instructions and it updated about 4-5 times. I installed a new driver for the 1070 (it was out of my last PC and is in fine working order). Installed steam then rust. Checked some fps marks then turned the system off to connect some HD drives. When i go to turn it back on it refuses to. The rbg lighting in the motherboard is functional so i know the psu is supplying power. I have double checked all front plate connections and they seem fine.

I'm pulling my hair out! What was straight forward has turned into IDFK what i'm doing! If anyone can offer some advice and get this thing working again i would love you even more than i do now!

    UPDATE: ISSUE RESOLVED!

It turns out that the power on button decided to stop working after initially working just fine. Shorting out the power on pins on the mo-bo has the system up and running again.

Thankyou so much to the people that commented and helped with sorting this problem out. You guys are good people and this community is a shining example of what a sub should be like.

I'M SO HAPPY I COULD PLAY RUST! But i am at work so that will have to wait.

    Looking for short/squat case suggestions

    PC Streaming Help

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 11:11 AM PDT

I bought my PC about 3 weeks ago(https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gamer-ultra-desktop-amd-fx-6300-8gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-560-1tb-hard-drive-black/6072200.p?skuId=6072200 ). I don't really have much on the PC but last night I was using Streamlabs OBS to stream H1Z1(medium settings) and my stream was lagging like crazy. I have a Ethernet connection and I did a speed test it was over 100 download and about 12 upload if I remember correctly. Is there any recommendations for upgrading a particular part in my PC for a better performance when streaming? I'm not that sure of what parts do what, I'm a noob when it comes to building/replacing parts. If you're unable to click the link to see what PC I have please let me know and I'll type all the specs. Sorry if the cry for help isn't in the correct format. Thx in advance.

Advice for a low tier gaming buld

    Build Help:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming and web development.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p on medium settings should be fine.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Ok, so since I live in eastern Europe where parts are kinda expensive I would prefer around 700$.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Bulgaria.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Re-Cased my build!

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 10:14 AM PDT

So i recently jumped on the s340 elite when i saw it for a good deal ($48 after rebate) so i can get the GF's computer into a smaller and better case. (she has a full tower). It turned out way better than i expected. Only complaint i have with the case is if you have a large PSU you may have trouble fitting the excess cable under the shroud. Other than that it was great to build in and looks fantastic. The tempered glass side panel is very easy to install with fingerprinting it all up which is a huge bonus. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Qrgf8Y https://imgur.com/a/DJGbm

Buying one part at a time, is there a way to test a part to make sure its not DOA?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 03:51 PM PDT

I did this once before with my first PC and I guess I got insanely lucky. I've been reading a lot of horror stories lately how some people have been getting faulty parts/DOA parts. Which sounds really disappointing. I've always liked the idea of buying one part at a time and then just eventually building the pc piece by piece when I can afford it.

Like example Case>MOBO>CPU>RAM>PSU = Standard working pc if your mobo supports onboard video.

Then you can just temporarily use your new build for basic browser use and light gaming until your gpu comes in.

I was curious, seriously what are the odds of a part being DOA? And are there ways for me to test a single part just to make sure it works?

I'd rather buy one part at a time than have to wait for mobo+ram+cpu in 1 purchase. Sorry im just not a patient person :P

Anyone ever heard or Best Buy Corporate Sample Sale?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 07:41 AM PDT

Okay so I'm in the market for a beefier power supply, and a guy on my local CL is selling a Corsair HX850(the grey one), BNIB still shrink wrapped. I asked him for proof of purchase and he claimed there's no receipt because it was purchased at a "Best Buy Corporate Sample Sale", where products "received from manufacturers for testing and shelf space allocation are resold to employees with all proceeds going to charity."

Now I don't really have doubts that his story is legit, even though I've never heard of such sales(that doesn't mean they don't exist). But I am concerned about the manufacturers warranty still being good. I consider the manufacturers warranty on power supplies to be essential, and will not be buying one that doesn't have it. So, do any of you know, am I good in regard to the warranty for this thing? Or is it a definite no go because there's no P.o.P.?

    Pay $500 for a RX 580 8G or wait?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 03:50 PM PDT

My R9 270X, after a few years, finally died. I was experiencing flickering and artifacting as well as my whole PC restarting by itself.

I was going to buy a new ASUS MG279Q in the next week since I could already push out more than 144 FPS in the games I play, and the IPS display is exceptional for editing photos and video. After I've saved some more, I was going to build an entirely new system, but now I'm left without one.

I forgot my full specs and can't turn on my computer without it restarting after 2 minutes to check but have an FX-6350, 8 GB RAM, and a Corsair CX500 PSU. I was planning to upgrade to a Ryzen 4K video editing system(Ryzen 1700, RX 580 8G, 16 GB 3200 RAM, etc.), but if I were to save up I would be without a computer for months, unless I were to buy a RX 580 8G now which will probably be bottlenecked by my FX-6350.

There is an event I need to shoot and edit within the next two months and I'm potentially left without a computer to edit on. What are my choices?

Can I re-flash a new bios onto an Asrock AB350M Pro4 that has a corrupted bios?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 03:45 PM PDT

I'm having problems with an Asrock AB350M Pro4 that has a corrupted bios. I was doing a USB bios flash through the bios and when it was doing the update, it just randomly stopped and it doesn't work properly anymore. When i try to turn on the PC, it just spins the fans a bit and then shuts off and repeats. I can't get an RMA for reasons and I dont have the time to buy a new bios chip and replace the old one.

    Dual monitors for the same price - 24” 4K vs 27” 2K

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 01:24 PM PDT

Not gaming, just building a CAD/rendering machine. Wall is about 5' wide with a midATX case on the desktop.

For around $300each, I'm leaning towards the 24" duals to get the 4K for renders but I'm curious if sacrificing the real estate is worth the better resolution.

Currently working on a 17" mobile workstation so anything is an upgrade.

    Help choosing a new GPU

First build, Just trying to get some opinions

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 03:33 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming MMO's and FPS mostly

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p 60fps at least on high to ultra

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    around 2k give or take

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    US

So for my first build I figured with the general idea of what I'm wanting to build already formed I'd get some opinions on the overall idea. The actual time frame I'd be ordering everything is most likely within a few months so I have the time to keep an eye on things price wise. I've kind of decided to semi future proof as far as GPU is concerned and go with a 1080 so I won't end up replacing it for a good little bit. I'm still very much bouncing around looking at different monitors in the 144hz range but I am set as far as mice and keyboard are concerned. I would definitely appreciate any and all opinions y'all would have as far as what I have planned out so far. Still in the process of saving to actually order the parts so I'm more than open to making changes where I might need to on the build to save money or push out some more performance. I will say that I am definitely hoping to be able to pick up a GPU at a decent price once I finally do get around to ordering all the parts.

These are the components i was planning to buy now:

    -CPU: i5 8600k

    -MBO: Z370 Aorus Ultra Gaming

    -RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB 3000Mhz

Could really use some help with this. Anything i should change?

The plan is to use this graphics card until prices drop a little bit, so i can get a new one.

    Can my PSU handle this?

    Thanks guys.

Question about odd number of RAM

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 03:10 PM PDT

So I built my PC a few years ago with the help of my brother when I bought some parts off of him including his old RAM. It was 32 GB, but one stick died and I have been running 24 since. I've tried looking this up but can't find a clear answer, is there a reason I should take out a stick and run 16 instead of 24? I know the difference between 16 and 24 in non-existent, but is there any harm leaving it in?
