How to safely host cloud storage on home network?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 08:15 AM PDT

I want to throw some media on a Raspberry Pi and run Plex or Subsonic. I have Unibiquiti USG and Switch. Do you have any tips for how to harden the network and penetration test it?

    What I'm thinking:

    • Separate VLAN isolated from my home network.
    • Poke holes for https and anything needed for streaming through to my home VLANs.

    Questions I have:

    • Beyond poking around myself on the vlans, are there any utilities or methods to help verify I have my VLAN properly isolated?
    • If no traffic is routed from my home VLANs to the cloud storage VLAN except for http/https, what attacks are still possible? Any way to further mitigate this risk?
    • Know of any dirt cheap VPSs that offer 200GB+ for <= 5USD? Would be worth the peace of mind.

    10 Gig Home Network

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 11:10 AM PDT

I'm looking for some advice on setting up a 10 Gig connection between my computer and my freenas server and my windows home server. I have a 1 gig connection to the house so I only need gigabit everywhere else. The setup is the 2 servers are stacked next to each other and the computer is in another room.

My current equipment and setup is a Ubiquiti edgerouter lite connected to a netgear 24 port gigabit poe switch and 2 ubiquiti APs

My main questions are do I need a router capable of 10g speeds or can I just buy a 10g switch and connect all the devices into that. Should I use 10GbE or SPF+? SPF+ seems cheaper but the cables are expensive for long runs which I'm going to need to connect my computer. I already have a Cat6 cable run to my computer but I'm not sure if it will be able to handle 10G. It's over 100 feet for sure and might be over 150 which is the max for Cat6.

I've seen the LB6M switch recommend before and I've seen them online for ~$350 which seems like a good deal for 10g equipment. Is there any other switch that are better or cheaper that you guys would recommend? Also for NICs is there any you would recommend that are good for the money.

I've also seen InfiniBand mentioned but it seems that it is not compatible with freenas.

Two Routers / Cable Modem Setup

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 06:21 PM PDT

    All—

Need some basic advice. I've got a cable drop that comes into a furnace room in my basement. Then there's a metal access box that has CAT5 connections and Coax connections to every room in the house.

I've got my cable modem installed in the metal box in the furnace room and used to have my ASUS RT-AC3200 plugged in to that to do everything. Of course I got horrible coverage throughout the house with a WiFi router in the basement.

So i installed an unmanaged network switch in the metal box and tried to install the ASUS router upstairs, but it didn't work. So I put an old Apple Time Capsule in the metal box, set it up to do all DHCP stuff (turned off WiFi) and daisy chained the unmanaged switch as the Time Capsule didn't have enough physical ports.

Plugged the ASUS router upstairs and just set it up as a Wifi Access Point. Works great, but I lose a lot of the cool features of the ASUS router (Traffic monitoring, QoS, etc).

Are there other downfalls to this setup? Is there a better alternative?

    Upgrade Cable modem

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 05:56 PM PDT

I have cable internet through Cablelynx (if that matters) and have been wondering if buying a modem could make any difference in speeds. For some reason with the cable company modem and my router I get around 10% of the upload speed I should be and only around 75% of the download. I understand the speed I'm paying for is not what I will receive but currently I'm way off

Need some advice on which router to get

Hello friends, I'm currently living in a condo with lots of walls from where my modem is located, so my current linksys e1200 has super poor speed. Currently I am deciding between the Asus RT-AC66U B1 and the D-Link AC1750 DIR-859. Which one is generally better? Thank you

Do We Need A Mesh System Or Something Else?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 04:46 PM PDT

We opened a new office recently and I have no idea what to do for good wi-fi.

The office is about 2500 square feet, all on 1 floor and this is our current setup:

Verizon Fios Modem/Router Combo - in 1 corner of the office.

Netgear Universal Dual Band Wifi Range Extender - in the other far corner of the office. We do run an ethernet cable to this extender.

Issues: The way it's setup right now, we have 2 different wifi network names, the main 1 and then the extender is the other one. I don't like devices always having to switch from one network to the other.

The MAIN issue though is that the switching never works very well. For example, if you are sitting a few feet from the main Fios Router, sometimes a phone or device will connect to the extender all the way at the other end of the office even though it's wifi signal is low and you are sitting a few feet away from the other option with a full signal.

Another issue is even when it is connected to the right network, many times it drops connection and isn't very reliable.

Based on all of this, what do you guys recommend?

We want to be able to have good stable connection to the internet from everywhere in the office, preferably on just 1 network so there isn't any switching needed.

Do we need something like a mesh system and if so, what should we go with? Orbi, Eero?

Or should we get something else and how many things do we need to buy to make it work?

    Thanks in advance!

Where to begin to diagnose latency issue?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 04:42 PM PDT

I noticed latency issues for several days now while online gaming, but also with online streaming. I ran azurespeed latency test, and I get multiple spikes to different regions at different times. I spoke with my ISP (did the modem/router/PC reset/reboot), and was told outside of a speedtest, etc., they can't help me and was told it was probably my equipment.

Is there is any other way to find out if it's not my equipment before I start buying new routers/reformating my PC, etc. I'm on a desktop PC, wired connection, using an ISP modem and a personal netgear router. Apologies if this is in the wrong sub/format!

Linksys EA4500 - I can't access the router but it gives an IP

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 04:40 PM PDT

I have a Cisco (Linksys) EA4500 Router that, up until a recent firmware update was working just fine. Now, it gives an IP address via DHCP but when I try to access the router (192.168.1.1) I get a "Cannot connect" page in the browser. All router functions have stopped (wifi etc...).

I have tried numerous hard resets. When I hold the reset button the power light doesn't even blink, no matter how long I hold it for. I have also tried the 30/30/30 reset to no avail. Last, I tried assigning a manual IP and different Router IP (eg. 192.168.0.1 as router and 192.168.0.101 as the computer IP).

Is there another way in or am I bricked?

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: FIXED. So first, the router wasn't bricked but successfully flashed to a version of OpenWRT with no GUI. Silly me. Rather than battle with trying to re-flash the router, I used the "3 Failed Boot" fix and forced it to boot from it's backup partition, thus restoring the original firmware. You can read about that fix here: https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/ea4500

Thanks to OneCDOnly and reddit_KYZHK for jumping in to assist and for putting me on the right track!

    Intermittent Packet Loss Frontier Fios

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 04:35 PM PDT

Hey guys I'm having a problem with packet loss on Frontier Fios. My recently replaced ONT is connected to my router through ethernet and then hard-wired to my desktop. The cables seem to be ok as there's no packet loss between my ONT, router, or computer. The main game that I'm having problems with is Fortnite and Counter-Strike and even then, the packet loss is not always there 100% of the time. Some games I get it, others I don't. I tried disabling my firewall on my PC and also my router's firewall and DOS protection but it still happens.. At this point I am considering switching ISPs.

Half the wifi speed compared to my wired speed so how do I fix this?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 02:54 PM PDT

Let me be clear I just changed my modem Arris TG1682G (the xfinity rental modem), to my now ARRIS SURFboard SB6141 8x4 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem Black and I have noticed a speed reduction. I use the wifi on my ROUTER which has not changed.

The Old Modem (xfinity) = 100Mbps on wired and on the 5ghz wifi.

The New Modem (Surfboard) = 100Mbps wired and 54 Mbps on wifi.

I use the wifi on my router which I did not changed. So I don't really understand why I would not get 100Mbps on wifi when the wired speed is still the same as the old modem.

Maybe since the old Modem has 5ghz built in, it helped my 5ghz wifi in the ROUTER increase? Does that even make sense?

I tried asking a few of my friends and they too are lost.

    Thanks for any help!

Edit: I just discovered that my old modem is a gateway? The Xfinity is a modem/router.

    Setting up home network

I'm new to anything dealing with home network and looking to setup my first one. The first issue I have come across is I'm with at&t so I have to use their modem. Is this okay or should I wait until my contract is up in a few months to switch to a different isp so I can use any modem I choose?

Stalled downloads... connection reset by peer

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 02:19 PM PDT

I'm having large (1gb+) downloads stall using wget, they start off downloading fine and then eventually the throughput drops to zero after flapping for a little bit.. then I get connection reset by peer. One other symptom is download speed tops out at about 20 Mbps even though the connection is 400+ Mbps. Doing speed tests runs just fine, the problem only presents itself with large files.

    Network diagram:

Cable Modem <-> Linksys WRT3200ACM <-> Ubiquiti LiteBeam AC Gen2 (PtP bridge, AP) <-> Ubiquiti LiteBeam AC Gen2 (PtP bridge, Client) <-> Dell S60 <-> Dell R920 (Ubuntu 18.04 KVM host) <-> Ubuntu 16.04 VM.

I tried downloading the same files on a workstation connected via ethernet cable to the Linksys WRT3200ACM, that worked as expected, so the problem is not with the cable modem or Linksys WRT3200ACM. Also I swapped out the S60 with a different switch and that had no effect on the problem. I also tried downloading directly on the R920 KVM host and I have the same problem as the VM guest. My gut is telling me the problem is with the Ubiquiti bridge, but unfortunately I don't have a cable long enough to bypass the wireless bridge with a wired connection.

Best place to purchase Ubiquiti hardware?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 02:01 PM PDT

So I made a post here recently about upgrading my home network, and was convinced that I should ditch the all-in-one units and start to piece my network together with separate router/access points.

I'm going to go with an edge router and an access point. I need some advice on the access point itself. Current recommendations here are ac-ap-lite. I just want to know that this bad boy is actually going to give me the best speeds possible? I like the idea that if I need to upgrade, I can just add a new access point, but speed is a major thing for me. I stream all my TV so I need to be able to get my fire sticks the best possible wireless speeds.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Asus RT-AC66U hacked and DNS changed

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 11:17 AM PDT

Recently wanted to add a port forward for one of my cameras, when I noticed that the language was changed from English to Korean. I found it odd, but overlooked it.

I thought i would check some settings, when I noticed that my DNS settings were off. I almost always use Google's DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). When I noticed that the primary was set to: 185.183.96.151

When I visited the DNS ip (http), it shows a bunch of PHP grab scripts. Also, some default username and passwords for routers.

More info about my setup: 1. I do allow web access via port 8080 2. PPTP was enabled with credentials 3. I did NOT use default username and passwords. 4. Firmware version: 3.0.0.4.380_7378

How should I proceed with this? I have since disabled the remote access, disabled PPTP, changed the passwords, and updated the firmware. I'm still a bit warry of this router. I believe this happened in the past, but I have ignored it. I wonder if there's a backdoor in these units. The first time, the router also had the Koren language changed.

Best wifi router to use for Webpass

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 10:50 AM PDT

I'm moving into an apartment building that has Webpass, which is apparently averaging internet speeds of 500mbps (clutch). I'm looking for a router that will allow me to get full usage of that speed without bottlenecking or throttling the service. The apartment manager recommended Apple Airport Extreme and NetGear Nighthawk, but that's based on what she's heard from tenants. I'm looking for a second opinion. Any thoughts?

Extending home wifi for better covereage

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 02:53 AM PDT

    Morning,

I have recently moved into a new home and am having issues with wifi coverage in the bedroom and kitchen. The house is a new build however the bedroom is separated from the main building (even though it is attached) by a block wall. I currently have Talktalk fibre and use their standard router, the wifi in the bedroom is 1 bar if I am lucky on my phone and my wifes gets nothing.

I have looked into how best to solve this without running an ethernet cable into the bedroom and I am thinking of using a router with more powerfull external antennas placed upstairs halfway between the current router and the bedroom which I will run in a wireless repeater configuration.

My needs summed up are basically: * Powerful wifi signal to give better coverage throughout the house. * Setup to allow my devices to switch seamlessly between the Talktalk router and new one as I move through the house. * Work in a wireless repeater type mode so I dont have to run network cable. * Be £50 or under.

    What are my best options?
