    Weekly Questions Thread - March 19, 2018

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 03:56 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

    • How do I pass data between my Activities?
    • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
    • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

How does crashlytics group stacktraces ?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 10:12 AM PDT

Crashlytics currently groups all my SSLExceptions together (Caused by javax.net.ssl.SSLException). Even if the SSLException appears very low in the stacktrace (cause of a cause of an actual logged exception for an exemple)

My app interacts with several different APIs and I'd like to know which the breakdown see if this is a particular host giving the exception or something else.

I would expect crashlytics to only group completely identicall stacktraces. Or do I miss something ?

remote control apps to automate repetitive tasks in games

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 04:10 AM PDT

Hi, for a long time, I thought you need to root your device to "remote control" it.
But then I found this https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy.
Here you can "remote control" your unrooted device via your pc.
So is it possible to write some app that "sits in the back" and remote control my device to automate repetitive tasks in games? With or without root?

    Deployment without PlayStore?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2018 01:36 AM PDT

Hi, I'm asking people who is working in a company and makes internal applications for people working there. Those kind of applications are not published in play store. So I'm curious of what are you using for Continuous Integration and Deployment? Any ideas? One of the requirement is to be able to group users (devices) by cities and push updates into selected areas.

I've made an mvp in React Native: https://hkoa.app.link/7hbxzw6ApL

It's an advanced search of twitter, which gathers the results into an inbox so you can speed up organic activity like building communities.

Anyone spare a min to feedback on it?
