I'm giving away my old desktop and want to make sure all my info is off it! Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:35 PM PST So I'm giving away a decent gaming desktop to a neighbor and I'd just like to know anything I could possibly be forgetting to do to make sure every little bit of my personal info is taken off it :) I was already advised to take out my old hard drives and buy new ones for it, so that's what I've done! Is that 100% all there is? For some reason, I'm thinking there's more, besides the personal files and all. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Gave my neighbor my wifi password for a week Posted: 09 Jan 2018 12:08 PM PST I want to know if when I change the password, will it kick him off of it? [link] [comments] |
Is 30 mbps a good enough internet speed for 1 person ? Posted: 09 Jan 2018 11:44 AM PST I'm getting internet for my studio apartment and I'm on a tight budget. I'm picking between 2 packages: 30 mbps for $40 or 100 mbps for $60. Im the only one in the apartment and I'm only gonna use my tv for Netflix/YouTube/amazon video/wwe network. Only for a few hours a day too if I do end up watching tv. I don't have a laptop so gaming or anything like that isn't an issue. I do use my phone for internet/twitter/Facebook/Spotify pretty often though. And I guess having a few people over who were all using there phones may be an issue. My tv is also a 4K. I'd like to get that benefit from it but it's not necessary for me to enjoy it. An extra $20 a month is a lot to me right now so if I don't need 100 I don't wanna get it but I really don't know what to do. [link] [comments] |
Someone remotely controlling my laptop, tried making purchases Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:30 AM PST I woke up this morning to my screen opening chrome and going to PayPal. I don't have a PayPal account fortunately. I tried moving my mouse but it wouldn't do anything, so I forced my computer off. I then check my history to see attempts at buying things off Amazon and some CSGO skin website. How can I stop this from happening again? I've never had anything like this happen before. Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:49 AM PST My gtx 980 ti restarts my pc when the gpu is stressed. Tested in another pc and same problem ( is not psu related ). [link] [comments] |
Is there an actual fix to the Windows 10 not being able to mount an .iso bullshit? Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:44 AM PST FFS, I'm not in a hurry to copy and paste every single .iso file, just to get it to mount. WTF is this shit? Why can't it mount .iso files? [link] [comments] |
Monitor not Detected - VGA to DVI-D Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:43 AM PST Hey everyone! I got a new computer and tried to plug my Monitor into the tower - the monitor uses VGA and I had to get.a DVI adapter to be able to plug it into the tower - it's the one without the 4x pins. The monitor isn't detected sadly. I had heard it's something to do with analog and digital. Is there a way of converting that or do I need to get a newer monitor? The monitor is old! Replaced CPU (same CPU) and now random restarts on Windows 10. Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:42 AM PST So I had a bad CPU that was running very hot/high voltage.. I ended up returning it and getting the same CPU. Build: 8700K Strix 1080Ti 128gb SSD 2TB HDD When I first installed my CPU, it loaded up perfectly. I went ahead and did a stress test (my files carried over from my previous CPU). 100% on RealBench showed great temps and low vcore usage. I noticed I got a graphics card driver update and went to start the download.. 20% in, black screen and the computer restarts, just like that and before I know it.. I'm back to the home screen putting in my PW. I try again, except this time.. I get a BSOD. Every single time the error is different. Driver Stack Buffer, interrupted exception not handled, 2-3 others.. randomly. Remember that this is a NEW PC setup that worked perfectly for a week before I finally changed the CPU. Now I reseated the memory and it seemed to be okay, I tried to reinstall Windows through "Reset My PC" No luck, BSOD or a random restart. Reseat memory again, but different slot. No luck. Try one more time and I get it to reset my pc. I thought heck yeah, it's all fixed.... Nope. Now during the Cortana windows start, I get a BSOD or random restart. I'm creating a Windows Installation USB so I can boot from that and reformat the HDD/SDD and hopefully it'll fix it! The memory passed a memory test, I don't see how it could be the memory. It seems driver related.. one thing I'd like to note though: I went from 6700k to 8700k without re-installing windows. Played on it for a few days, noticed a bad CPU and installed the now new 8700k. I'm hoping a hard deletion of the HDD/SSD will do the trick. [link] [comments] |
Uninstalled Plex, now unable to connect to my laptop from my phone Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:38 AM PST I have used ES File Explorer to access files from my laptop's shared folders from my phone with no problem before I tried Plex Media Server. I uninstalled Plex on my laptop after some time and once I tried connecting to my laptop from my phone again, it won't accept the username and password as it says it's wrong. I can still transfer files wirelessly, but only if I use my laptop to connect to my phone and not the other way around. Thanks in advance! Laptop Specs:
Tried it on both Android Marshmallow and Nougat, doesn't work. [link] [comments] |
Can't connect to 2.4ghz connection but can connect to 5.0ghz? Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:35 AM PST My network card installed in my PC is a dual-band Asus pce-ac56, I can't figure out why I am only able to receive the 5ghz connection even though my router broadcasts 2.4ghz aswell. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:31 AM PST I have a 12/32 volt power supply/converter I've salvaged from an old printer. I've tested across the leads and the + pin returns 32v when it is connected to either of the other pins. If I test from + to BOTH of the other pins it returns 12v. How am I supposed to read that from these symbols? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:20 AM PST Hi, so I have these 3 apartments one on top of each other, and another apartment outside, but really close, probably in between 10 to 20 meters distance. I have internet connection in just one of the apartments and I want to obviously extend it to all of them. The obvious solution is to wire them together, the problem is that they are actually separated, there is no tube connecting them, plus one is external, and I am not sure if I can wire them all together. I am going to talk with my electrician and check if it is possible without many issues. So I have two questions. First question is a bit technical I believe, I cannot destroy every walls and most probably he will use the tubes where the electric cables are, I know this isn't recommended, so I need to know if this option just isn't recommended or is totally to avoid, also, should I use FTP cables and so FTP plugs to avoid problems?. My second question is, what wireless alternatives do I have? I have a repeater through two apartments and it is a really unstable solution, they are perfectly configured, and they work, but at times they just wont, so I think repeaters would be out of question, but setting up a web of multiple point bridges with a router for each apartment seems a bit too much. So I would like to know if there is a better option, even repeaters if you can suggest better or more performing repeaters or something like that. [link] [comments] |
Win 10 Update takes out USB ports Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:18 AM PST I have an issue on one of my laptops where the USB ports have stopped working after an update. Normally i would try and uninstall them in Device Manager. Unfortunately, it does not list Universal Serial Bus Controllers as an option on the tree. So i cant uninstall them. There is an Unknown Item in Other Items, but i can't seem to do much with that. Is there a way to uninstall the USB drivers through CMD.exe? Or any other fixes people can think of? I did download a program called Drive Talent, that identified there was an issue with the USB3.0 driver, but wouldn't update or uninstall it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you. Screen Projection Windows 10 Help Posted: 10 Jan 2018 02:40 AM PST Hey Reddit! This is my first post, so I do apologize if I do not seem to know exactly what is needed in this post information wise, but I'll do the best I can! I want to set up my Microsoft Surface Book as another monitor for my PC. Now before you say it isn't possible, I know I cannot connect my pc wired to the Surface Book, and have connected it to my PC through the projector option, and that worked fine! However, it lags tremendously when trying to do anything on that projected screen. Is there anything that I can do to stop this lag? (Mouse works fine but I cannot drag/drop application, open up anything on this screen, basically all it can show is desktop and mouse, and it BARELY does that) You should also know that currently my PC is connected to 2 monitors, and it successfully connects to the Surface Book through the projection method, allowing for all 3 monitors, however the 3rd monitor is basically useless. I hope I gave you guys enough information to work on, and I hope you guys can help me! Any info would be greatly appreciated. If you guys need any more information I'll be happy to do what I can - though I do apologize in advance for my lack of computer skills 😅 [link] [comments] |
Computer stopped working, might be GPU Posted: 10 Jan 2018 02:36 AM PST Hi, long time lurker here and just decided to open this thread because i'm experiencing a huge problem with my new build: it doesn't turn on. So, the pc build is one week old, I had high expectations, here's the part's list everything was working fine, I had tried GTA V and CSGO on max settings after installing the OS and all ran smoothly. Last night I was playing GTA V and suddenly my pc shut down. Tried to turn it back on and no beep, no nothing, the mouse connected to the back port was still on, so power was going through but I was still suspicious so I decided to perform the clip test on my PSU. The PSU fan worked, kept spinning. plugged it back to the mobo... nothing. Then i decided to connect the components one by one to the PSU and that's when, while the GPU wasn't connected to the PSU, everything started working - fans started spinning, CPU fan had its led on. Connected the GPU back to the PSU and nothing. Can a GPU just die like that after a week of playing a few times GTA V on max settings and editing on Premiere Pro? thank you in advance Edit: I tried the GPU in the other PCI-E slot and it had the same result [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Jan 2018 02:27 AM PST Hiya. My sister bought a new laptop a few days ago, a lenovo legion y520-15ikbn 80wk. This particular model is supposed to come with a backlight on the keyboard, and sure enough it glows for a while when booting the PC, but then stops. You should be able to turn it on and off with FN+Space, indicated by the "light" icon on space bar, but it is just not working. I've tried updating windows (10 home 64) to no avail, updating Lenovo programs and bios, cannot get it to work. Nothing from google has helped me. Has anyone tackled with the backlight on a y520? Does anyone know what the problem might be? Thx in advance. [link] [comments] |
Laptop randomly shuts down after installation of new hard drive when in sleep mode Posted: 10 Jan 2018 02:18 AM PST So I just got up to the sound of my new secondary HDD spinning from my laptop. Surely enough my laptop was shutdown without explanation. The laptop was in sleep mode, so it couldn't have possible have been shut down remotely. I'm not entirely sure why this happens and I think this may have happened before. I just installed the new hard drive, but don't know if this has anything to do with it. [link] [comments] |

Android internal storage files missing but still take up space Posted: 10 Jan 2018 02:02 AM PST Hello good day, I have a Redmi 4a (Chinese phone), it doesnt come with USB MTP support by default, You have to go into device manager and assign it a MTP driver manually, this worked well but I thought I'd be clever and assign it drivers for a "Samsung MTP Device". After using my and unplugging it I found all my files on my internal storage had disappeared BUT the phone says 11gigs have been used so the files are still there. What I've tried to fix it: Turned phone on and off. Show hidden files. Assign proper driver that I used before. View on my PC to see if they show up. Tried using third party software, this doesn't seem easy as this is internal storage so I can't take out an SD card, because I have to have the phone plugged in MTP doesn't seem to give a "Drive" (like C:/ drive) which the software can access to repair the device. I can't think of any other way to fix this, if anyone has a better suggestion or maybe I missed out a step, maybe theres another software (like one run on a phone device) I'd appreciate it. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Windows 10 camera app opening by itself Posted: 10 Jan 2018 02:02 AM PST I noticed the other day, when waking my computer from sleep, the Windows 10 Camera app opening itself, I am not sure whether it is malware or not, because I have avast, and have run full scans with it, same with malwarebytes and have checked running process with virustotal using proccess explorer. Is this just some type of bug with the new updates? I've heard that microsoft is rolling out new updates bc of intel happenings. I have had no major signs of obvious infections. [link] [comments] |
Snail pace downloads over WLAN Posted: 10 Jan 2018 01:53 AM PST Can anyone help with my wireless adapter issue. My downloads are sitting around 1Mbps over wifi and my uploads are fine (comparable to LAN connection). I used to get ~20Mbps. No issue over LAN or testing on phone, so I believe it's the adapter. Some googles reveal issues with USB-AC56 after windows creators updates but no solution there worked. *Asus PCE-AC56 *W10 64 *Asus ROG hero iv x370 *Ryzen 1800x Tried drivers (only one official) and different PCE slots. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Jan 2018 01:46 AM PST Hello everyone, first time posting here. Yesterday i installed new OS on my SSD and everything was supposedly running fine (GPT table). After i tasked the computer to compile new kernel and shut off next reboot it boots into emergency mode. When i try to check disk with live system lsblk shows this: sda 8:0 0 20M 0 disk This is 120 GB Goodram C40 ssd. It's been through a lot of formats and so on so I'm assuming death is possible but there was practically no warning. My system is Fedora 27 recently installed but i wiped the table with mbr to reinstall when i've seen some issues with gpt. Recreating partition table doesn't do anything. Changed my cable / sata port already. Smartctl says that disk doesn't support S.M.A.R.T. Please help (and sorry for bad english if anything ;)) [link] [comments] |
Question about the pending sector count in the SMART Posted: 10 Jan 2018 01:41 AM PST For about the last half year, I have a HD that has a pending sector count of 48. The data on the drive isn't critical. It's a Seagate model - ST2000DL003-9VT166. Also of note, the offline uncorrectable is also 48. My understanding of a pending sector is when the hard drive is waiting until it can read the data in the bad sector so it can then flag that sector as bad and assign a sector from the reserve pool in it's place. Over time, the pending sector should decrease after each reallocation (or increase as more sectors are flagged for allocation). If my understanding is correct, then why hasn't the pending sector count decreased in months? If I remember correctly, I don't think it's even changed a bit. [link] [comments] |
