Posted: 13 Jan 2018 05:08 PM PST I've recently had the pleasure of trying all three services (feel free to discuss other apps like Tidal as well), but I'd love to have some community discussion on what platform they use, why, what they like, and what the hate about it. For quick reference, if you can't seem my flair, I'm using an OG Pixel XL on 8.1. My quick thoughts: Spotify: The good: Social Ecosystem is pretty great. Playlists from music subs almost always have a Spotify playlist, used by many friends and family members. The best way to find music I've found in the past is through recommendations from friends. I'd also like to add that the ability to use it on Chromecast devices, echo devices, and game systems is super great. This service is a market leader for a reason. The bad:. I'm not a huge fan of the UI (this is the case for all apps I've tried though) The ugly: why in God's name do app developers make it so that if you clear the app from your recents it kills playback? I get it in theory, but Christ, I feel like I'd just pause the music and then remove the app from recents if I fully wanted to close it. It just makes using the clear all button frustrating when listening to music. Also, if you're a freak like me and use two devices (one that primarily isn't online unless used for nav and sits in my car 99% of the time), you absolutely cannot listen to music on the offline device unless you:. Download something explicitly or connect it to the internet. This doesn't seem like a huge deal, but if I'm in the middle of a song using GPM, disconnect it from the internet, and come back a few hours later for a quick drive to the market, the song I was just listening to, which inevitably will be from a non download playlist won't play. I get to sit in silence, listen to the radio, or fiddle with my phone. It's a minor pain in the ass, but one that frustrates me to no end. Google Play Music: The good:. I've used this service the longest, and the biggest thing for me is that while I don't expect any one service to have every song available in the history of the world, it does get frustrating when you want to listen to a song and it simply doesn't exist on the service. Other apps let you put songs on your device, but Christ, it's 2018! Use the power of the cloud! The free storage locker using GPM is this services killer app. I can't tell you how many times I've been unable to find obscure things on other services. Your personal collection integrates as if it were actually from the for pay service, which is great. I've had some bugs with this though, but in general, super great. It also comes with YouTube red, so no ads. A fun little bonus for being a GPM subscriber. EDIT: also, I really love the songza playlists they integrated into the service s few years ago. The bad:. Oh man, I really wish GPM got a UI refresh. It's kind of a hassle navigating the system, though once you get use to it, its generally alright. Managing playlists is also terrible. A slide and click or mass select option would have been better when it came to editing song order or removing songs. It blows. Cropped album art also annoys me. If you live in a Google world, this service is passable, but not everyone has a Chromecast or Google home devices, making GPM a non starter for lots of people. The ugly: I haven't experienced this, but I'm 99% sure GPM still has awful performance issues on non pixel devices. This is really unacceptable for Google, and I'm hoping a future UI refresh of some sort will deal with this issue. Lack of a desktop app is also an attrocious oversight, as is the process to actually upload your own collection using the extremely outdated music manager. I have no confidence these things will change in the short term, but I have hope a revamp of the google play ecosystem will harbor some much needed fundamental changed to the GPM environment. Apple music The good:. Free for three months, brought in the family sharing plans that other services adopted. The bad: Why on God's green earth did Apple feel compelled to reinvent the wheel when it came to creating the playback notification? The fact that it doesn't utilize Oreos colorized media notification isn't the worst thing on the planet, but it makes me wonder why? It doesn't make the media player stand out with the slew of other notifications I have, and doesn't even give you the option to heart/like/ whatever the hell apple does to save things to a library/playlist. Really mediocre imo. The ugly: Everything else App constantly crashes Trying to build a playlist? Good luck. I attempted to create a playlist three times and only on the fourth time did it work, because when you add songs to a playlist, until you hit the little check mark, it doesn't get created, despite having added 15 songs to the damn thing. Guess what happens if the app crashes. You're SOL, and you'll never get that time back The UI is attrocious. Who the hell thought pink text on a white background was a good idea? Why am I constantly directed to the "For You" page?? And not my library or some home page that let's me select where I want to go like spotify or GPM? Why is there an option to like dislike my own playlist? Search is near useless when looking for more obscure stuff unless you type in the song name and artist because the "top results" show three things. Here's an example: I was looking for the song overgrown by oh wonder. Why can I see the album the song is on, but not the song? It's wasting my time. It's the worst parts of iTunes brought to your Android device. Why is album art constantly loading when I search? These are small thumbnails that require little to no data, and I'm on fast internet. I could go on, but this service is just the absolute worst on Android, and if it's the same on Apple, I have no clue how this service has a customer base. For now, I feel like GPM is the better service, but needs some large changes, which Spotify being high quality, and Apple Music just being torturous to use. What are your thoughts? Why so quite around HTC U11+ ? Posted: 13 Jan 2018 03:51 AM PST Hi there all! TL;DR - HTC u11+ overlooked? Or did I miss something? I spend quite the time on Reddit nowadays reading up on new smartphones and mobility tech. I am "studying" a lot for my next smartphone purchase. I'm currently using an Essential phone and even though I love the phone overall I do want as long better camera. So here is my question. My view is that the HTC u11 got somewhat praised for its camera? Correct me if I am wrong. So overall it is a solid phone that also isn't that expensive compared to note 8 or iPhone X for example. But with those huge bezels and a 16:9 display I can understand why it is overlooked when discussing 2017 best phone... But with the upgrade to u11+ with 18:9 ratio and a bigger battery I feel that it should be praised a lot more? So is it something I'm missing, is it not as good as I think, and why in that case? Otherwise, why do you think it's overlooked? Ciao! [link] [comments] | ||
