I need to give 3 or more suggestions for the purchasing team.

We need it to be windows and cannot be a Mac.

    SPECS:

    Processor: i7,i9, Ryzen 7 or 9

Ram: 32gb (minimum they are firm on this and dont want 16gb)

GPU : Quattro or RTX (has to be dedicated GPU doesn't have to be super high end not going to be gaming on this)

Screen: Doesnt matter really we will be using a monitor

Storage : 512gb at least SSD

Laptops need to look professional and good on a board room desk so cant be Alienware for example. But Razor and the white ASUS ROG are ok. IE not too flashy.

    What I found

    1. ThinkPad P14s Intel (14")
    2. ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G14
    3. Legion 5 Pro Gen 6 AMD (16")

Please let me know if Im missing some obvious great performing laptops.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    £300

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes to both, but only if the keyboard and pad isn't oily. I'm a bit phobic of germs... and I don't want to damage components by wiping it down.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I don't know. Just that it's a laptop that can run DAWs with high quality VSTs, the only games I would play on it other than emulators is Genshin Impact and Overwatch. And I want to be able to make artwork using Clip Studio, which I think requires a APU or Video Card.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use for art: Clip Studio Paint

For music: FL Studio using multiple VSTs like Kontakt, high quality sample libraries for DirectWave

For web browsing: Microsoft Edge, important later on because I open up multiple tabs at once withthe collections feature. About 18 in total.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Games: Genshin Impact, Overwatch. Emulation: Xbox 360 Era possibly, but a few before that (Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Heroes, maybe Metal Gear Solid 3) No Cyberpunk luckily, but there's no telling when or if I may try a triple A game on it. Not my priority though.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I will say I'd like USB 3.0 or above ports if the storage is short, because I do have an External SSD with the games on it. The Laptop has to have an SSD in it for booting. And at least 3 USB slots total (including the USB 3.0)

Also, it must do HDMI output. Because with some of those games and, I would like to project the screen to a monitor. If it has two ports, that would be perfect

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The main reason my budget is low is because I want the bare minimum to run those games at decent framerates. I saw that the Ryzen 5500U performs them really well, but the 3500U also does. I'm unsure however where to find laptops at the £300 price range with the 3500U. I am open to site suggestions. I'm in no hurry. This is mainly a backup and on the go laptop. I was going to get an Android phone to be the backup and emulate games, but I figured a laptop at the same price range makes more sense for my situation and my mental needs.

Another thing to note is it would be a bonus if I could multitask. Like for example, when I play Overwatch, during the loading screens and respawn, I will usually alt tab to work on my music. And I may be watching a video on another monitor.

Feel free to ask me questions though of course.

Edit: Maybe I am dum dum? I forgot the Steam Deck exists. BUT, I'm unsure of how it would perform as a Workstation PC. And I don't want to void the warranty on it by overwriting the OS.

Edit 2: Reddit Broke the post? I'm not sure what to do?

Looking for a laptop under 80,000 INR in India

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 08:46 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
80,000 INR in India (Delhi to be specific)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Priority is as follows, Build Quality, Performance, form factor and finally battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Probably won't go heavier than 1.6kg
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14" as most/all 15" have a number keypad
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No. Just multimedia consumption and occasion excel-based work
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      - In my mind the probable configuration is Ryzen 5700/800/900, 16gb ram/8gb with expansion slot, 512gb ssd (expansion slot would be great). Not a fan of intel 11th gen, but not completely ruled out.
      - Reliable Build Quality/Longevity is the priority. This is followed by Good Keyboard. Fingerprint reader would be good to have. Don't care about touch screen.
      - Launch price of any laptops with 12th gen Intel or Ryzen 6000 series will be too high. Waiting for them to come to market has been ruled out as an option
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      - This is for my dad (Finally convinced to upgrade the laptop).
      - I'm not physically present in the country so am guiding him as best as I can.
      - He expects the laptop to last quite a while. The current Asus was bought in 2013 and is still working.
      - Warranty services in India leave a lot to be desired. Thus the emphasis on longevity.
      - We've narrowed down to G14 (2021), Vivobook Pro OLED or Ideapad 5 pro.
      - We've all but ruled out Dell, Acer, MSI, etc. and I think that leaves either Asus or Lenovo.
      - Assumption is that the pro models might have a better build than non-pro models and G14 probably has the best build quality of the lot
      - Not sure if we should look at any models with SLIM as thermal management would be compromised

    UK Laptop for work/gaming

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 08:37 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

As the title suggests, I'd like to upgrade my laptop away from my 8 year old MacBook Pro.

    • Total budget (UK — GBD).
Quite a broad range, but somewhere between £600-800.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, build quality, battery life. (In that order)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'd prefer it not to weigh a tonne, but I'm not too bothered about slimness.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'm hoping to teach myself some basic photoshop/GIMP skills, but my main priority is something which is capable of running games. I just completed Elden Ring and am taking a tour back through Dark Souls, so would like something that could comfortably run DS3.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Dark Souls 3 at high(ish) settings. 60fps would be a bonus but seeing as I've almost exclusively only played games at 30fps this isn't a huge priority.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      N/A
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Apologies if this isn't the most informative post... I am admittedly pretty useless when it comes to the specifics of a PC.

Best balanced laptop for $1500 or less (not gaming)

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 08:31 AM PDT

I'm looking to get a new laptop that'll be used 90% for work/productivity/browsing (web based, excel, etc., no rendering or special use cases), and 10% for media consumption/travel etc.

Max budget is $1500 (hard limit)

Most of time it'd be used as a "hub" connected to external keyboard/mouse/monitor.

Looking mainly for reliability/build quality, decent capabilities (large 300+ MB spreadsheets with functions etc, 30-40 open browser tabs at a time, etc), and portability.

Would prefer something sleek/light to gaming models with RGB/huge coolers/etc. Discrete graphics not a priority.

    15'' ideally.

Was eyeing the XPS 15, but the models within budget have very limited ram (8GB for 12 gen version) and storage (512GB NVME).

Not out of the question, but wanted to see if there's any other similarly priced "premium" laptops that would have better capabilities/specs, or same specs but cheaper.

Must be Windows, no Macs (work requirement).

    Any suggestions appreciated!

I don't mind about storage as I can affix my own SSD. I prefer 16GB RAM but 8GB is okay too as I can upgrade that later. Thanks for reading and helping :)

    Comparison of two Lenovo

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 07:31 AM PDT

From my point of view these two laptops are basically the same. I removed the non-relevant lines.

I minimally game - never competitive. Would work on some graphics, CAD, working on a machine learning (tensor, python, R) , lots of devops oriented tasks.

Power/battery not important, always plugged. Sizes of device not important.

Higher screen resolution seems important - even though I'm older now and need to make things a bit bigger - at least they are sharp.

Laptop for image processing and deep learning

(UK) Looking for a good value gaming laptop

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 03:29 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

(UK) Hoping for around £750 - £850 but can spend more but has to be under £1000

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'd prefer not used but could be persuaded.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Performance 2. Build Quality 3. Battery 4. Form Factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight shouldn't be a problem, so long as I can fit it in a backpack.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No, really only gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I play a lot of paradox and strategy games as well as older games like skyrim. I'm used to playing on super low settings at 20fps. Higher at consistent 30fps would do me.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nah don't think so

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've had the same (somewhat decent despite only integrated graphics) pc for 5 which has done me well, but id like something a bit more powerful that I can take with me when away from home.

Also I have like zero technical knowledge when it comes to pcs and laptops.

<14", Australia, <$2400 AUD Lightweight Laptop for Tertiary IT student

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 03:10 AM PDT

    Hello all!

I am looking for a general use laptop with low weight, size, heat and noise, long battery life and high build quality. Ideally I'd like something comparable to a Macbook Air, only running Windows and inexplicably more powerful.

I currently have a last generation Legion Y540, however I find it not particularly useful due to it being the opposite of everything described above, making it very unattractive to me for any use case.

My intended uses for the computer are:

    • Studying IT from home - This will require running Cisco Packet Tracer and multiple networked virtual machines.

    • In-bed entertainment - I don't know if it's healthy but I really miss watching movies in bed with my old Macbook propped up on my knees and my head stacked on some pillows.

    • Retro/Indie gaming - I'd love to have enough power and backwards compatibility to play some lighter or older games at 60FPS, resolution not important. My favourites are Half-Life and Super Meat Boy, but slightly heavier titles and emulators would also be nice.

    • Streaming exercise tutorials - I'm trying to get some bodyweight exercises and yoga in now and then, and being able to take a screen and set of speakers with me anywhere in the house would really help.

    • Experimenting with creative apps - It's a long way off now, but I'd very much like to try my hand at some digital art, game development, even light music production at some point.

    • Hoarding music files - I, err, have a lot of video game soundtracks on my hard-drive right now… all only MP3's, but it still adds up to 70 GB currently. I should probably just do some spring-cleaning and unload that onto an EDD, but it'd still be nice to have plenty of storage. 512 GB maybe?

Some random features I'd appreciate are:

    • USB-A ports

    • Clickable trackpad

    • 16:10 aspect ratio

    • A nice keyboard

    • A webcam

Would appreciate any recommendations or advice! Many thanks in advance!

Macbook Pro M1 or HP Elitebook i7-1165g7, which could last longer?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 02:36 AM PDT

Pro for the Elitebook is upgradeability and repairability, but it has just 4 cores 8 threads, and the 12th generation Intel has 12/16. Therefore is the question, which laptop would last me longer ? Would the cpu become in just a few years outdated? Or should I go with the Macbook, but here comes almost all repair with an expensive motherboard swap?

    Thanks.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very much
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      n/a
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
95% of time no, but I would love to know that I can run a game if I want to
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Nothing too wild
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      I care the most about:
      - build quality
      - durability
      - heating
      - noise
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I will use it most of the time docked with external monitor, kb, mouse, headphones
I will use it for work, mainly browsing. But I want to be able to run a game or so. I am currently with a very expensive gaming PC, but I want to be mobile.
Few years ago I got a 1500$ dell laptop, and the heating was killing me. Eventually after warranty was over it completely died out. MB got fried, even tho I was using extra cooling.
I know a bit about computers and specs, but it is above my knowledge about build quality, durability, heating and noise.

    • Thank you! :)

[Poland/4500 PLN] Looking for gaming laptop

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 01:29 AM PDT

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase:

    4300 PLN / Poland

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      I prefer new

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life?

Well it is going to be my first laptop after using desktop pc with i5 4350 and 750ti graphic card for a long time so it would be good if it had a good performance quality

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will be gaming but also i would like to learn some coding in near future. I mostly play apex legends, dota2, sea of thieves, path of exile.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I mostly play apex legends, dota2, sea of thieves, path of exile. I would like to play these on 144 fps on like medium settings but if only the laptop has 144hz monitor.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    No

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was planning to buy an HP pavilion with ryzen 5 5600 - gtx 1650 - 144hz monitor. But when i got to the store the guy said pavilions were getting a lot of complaints about thermal issues. Now I am thinking about this (https://www.x-kom.pl/p/723102-notebook-laptop-156-hp-victus-ryzen-5-5600h-16gb-512-rtx3050ti-144hz.html) but almost going crazy with what to do. I want a 144hz monitor but the laptops in my budget mostly have 1650-3050-3050ti graphic cards and i dont know if those will be enough for 144 fps in medium-high settings for the games i play. Few things that i want are 16gb ram and more than 500gb storage. I have no idea about how graphic cards will perform so my 144 monitor wish is totally optimal. I recently saw this (https://www.x-kom.pl/p/658385-notebook-laptop-156-gigabyte-g5-md-i5-11400h-16gb-512-rtx3050ti-144hz.html) maybe it is a good choice too.

A Laptop for school Around $600

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 01:15 AM PDT

I need a Windows laptop for school around the $600 mark. I already have a Desktop PC I'll be using for intensive tasks so it doesn't need to be super powerful, just powerful enough to reliably handle around 10 Chrome tabs open at once.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$600, but willing to increase to $800 if necessary
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
If the deal is good and the quality is like new then sure
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life > performance > build quality > form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Should be easy enough to cary around but other than that, not important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Anything above 11" and below 17"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Very light photoshop/photo editing and extremely light games, think Stardew Valley and flash/web games
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would really appreciate a good screen, touch-screen is useful but not necessary. I do a lot of typing so a good keyboard is a must, along with a good battery. I'd prefer a good touchpad but it's not a deal breaker.

Asus Zenbook OLED vs Zephyrus G14

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 12:36 AM PDT

I want to buy a laptop and following are the information as per questionnaire

    1. Price

About 90000 INR going up to 100000 INR.

    1. Place of purchase

    India

    1. Usage

Photo editing (not professional), office work involving mainly word, excel, ppt, outlook etc, online class (MS team) for son, some lightweight game.

    1. Priority

    Build quality, performance, display

    1. Screen size

14" as it would also be travelling.

    1. Brand

I have previously tried Dell, Surface, HP and this time I want to try Asus.

    1. Other

I don't want to go into Lenovo as I have read that they ship lots of bloatware.

    1. Queries about the shortlisted

    A. How good is the display of G14?

    B. How durable Zenbook Flip would be?

    C. Zenbook Flip 14 is available at approx 94000 INR for 512 GB version while 1 TB version is costing 110000 INR. Ideally 1 TB is preferred for storing the photos. But cost difference seems high to rather buy a external HDD.

    D. My present laptop is surface laptop 1 and on some very reflective (laminated surface) it gets heated up pretty fast during video streaming or online class. This made me skeptical about thin and light laptop and I wonder if Zenbook would be similar in thermal performance.

    E. I wonder if Asus Vivobook line up is good enough in build quality or general quality control. Believe Vivobooks are placed below Zenbook in Asus line up. Vivobook has better port availability than Zenbook. But I have not come across good reviews of Vivobooks.

Acer nitro 5 VS Mac mini or MacBook ?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 11:09 PM PDT

I currently own an acer nitro 5 laptop , I added 8gigs of RAM. ( total 16 gigs of ram now ) the computer is pretty fast and really no complaints with it. I have it hooked up to an external monitor so I rarely use the portability of the laptop . My question is would selling my nitro 5 and buying a used Mac mini 2014 be better? I could always buy a ps4 too for fairly cheap if I get a Mac, as macs aren't really good for gaming (I don't game that often anymore) any advice would Be appreciated
