Doing a Clean Install of Windows 10 on a laptop - license concerns Posted: 17 Jan 2020 07:12 AM PST Ok, this is a really weird scenario. My girlfriend is not very tech savy. Her laptop was set up by her ex, and it's his account on the machine. Well, it seems that he's changed his password/PIN, so she is locked out of the machine. She has all her files backed up, so my instinct is to wipe the whole machine, install Windows fresh, and then set her up with her own account. My concern is the Windows license. She owns the computer, she shouldn't have to pay for a new Windows license. If I'm doing a clean install over an existing copy of Windows, will it still recognize that it was activated? Thanks. Should I switch to Android/Windows from the Apple ecosystem? Posted: 17 Jan 2020 07:56 PM PST My first smart phone was an iPhone4, a gift from my mother (she is a loyal Apple fan). She bought me MacBook too, and I bought an iPad a few year later. Generally speaking, I had overall satisfying experience with Apple products. I enjoyed the ecosystem (AirDrop, hands-off etc.), however, I have never tried Android phones nor Windows laptops. I'm thinking of buying a new laptop first (my MacBook Air is over 5 years old) then a new phone. Should I consider buying a Windows 10 laptop and an Android phone perhaps? Thanks for your suggestions. [link] [comments]
Windows 10: Prevent auto-hide taskbar from appearing when an open app gets a notification Posted: 17 Jan 2020 07:18 PM PST /title You know that crudely annoying feature that makes an open applet get that yellow, flashing thing whenever it sends a notification? Well, I'm here because I need help disabling that (see It's especially annoying when I'm playing games that don't use fullscreen, and some random nerd pings me and causes my auto-hide taskbar to annoyingly appear. Can I get some help with removing this? Thanks for any and all responses! If this has been requested before, please link those previous posts in the comments! [link] [comments]
An update for Win8.1 requires me to sign as Administrator to install but already am Posted: 17 Jan 2020 03:02 PM PST Can someone help me here? So I installed Windows 8.1 on a laptop and after finishing all the updates there´s one update left (2019-11 Servicing Stack Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems KB4524445 -- 10,9MB) that requires me to log in as administrator in order to install it, but I already am logged as Administrator. What´s the issue? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Cannot re-enable "Diagnostic and usage data" to full: option grayed out Posted: 17 Jan 2020 04:15 PM PST I need to enable this setting again to receive insider builds but the option is grayed out as seen here. Is there any way to enable it via registry? [link] [comments]
Posted: 17 Jan 2020 05:48 PM PST Chrome is notoriously bad for scrolling through PDF files. Edge was good, until Microsoft upgraded it (more like downgraded it) to use Chromium. Now it sucks ass. Any recommendations for a PDF viewer? [link] [comments]
Can Windows 10 downloader to activate Windows? Posted: 17 Jan 2020 03:14 PM PST Few months ago a friend gave me a laptop with unactivated Windows 10 for work. Recently with Windows 7 support ending Windows 10 installation has been made free, can the Win 10 tool be used to activate Windows? Do I have to reinstall it again? Maybe is there a guide on what to do in this type of situation? [link] [comments]

Posted: 17 Jan 2020 03:26 PM PST Hi, it's me again. So, i got to reset my pc at 00:48am or something like that after the password bug. Then i went to sleep at 3:24am and it was at 10%. When i woke up at 12:35pm, I looked at it and it was 37%. I thought "Okay, no need to panic, it takes a while i know that" and waited for an hour and no results. I was confused since it took 5-10 minutes to the % go up. And now i'm here waiting for it for over 5 hours and it still is at 37%. I'll wait until midnight and edit the post if it changed or not. If not i'll wait until tomorrow and see if it changed. After that, if there are no results, I am restarting it and seeing if there's any result. Cya in 4 hours. [link] [comments]
A-Volute - SoftwareComponent - 1.6.1.0 - What the heck is this? Posted: 17 Jan 2020 11:10 AM PST Saw this pop up on my Windows update today and after looking it up it seems to have something to do with Alienware software. I don't have any Alienware hardware, my PC is self-built so I'm confused about why I'm receiving this... [link] [comments]
Posted: 17 Jan 2020 12:22 PM PST Sorry if this is the wrong forum or if I selected the wrong flair. My current desktop is Windows 7 Professional. I plan to do an in-place upgrade soon and had 2 questions. I know a clean install is better, but I have so much software/settings, etc. that I just don't have the time right now to start from scratch. When I have the budget to build a new desktop, I will take my time setting that up from scratch, while I continue to work on my current machine. My plan is to clone my current OS drive (using Macrium Reflect Free), and then do the in-place upgrade to 10. I know it is going to break or be incompatible with some of my software. I have a lot of older software, including an old version of Office and old version of Adobe photo/video editing products. I know I will have to upgrade (and bite the bullet to the dreaded subscription plan) for some software, and some I will just do without right now since I don't have a lot of budget. And maybe a lot will still work. Not sure. Either way, it is going to take time to get everything working properly, learning updated software, etc., even with the in-place upgrade. So, if I have to do something quickly (like work on a video editing project), I was hoping to swap to my windows 7 drive, so I can quickly work on my system as it is now, where everything works perfect and I know how to do everything quickly. Then when done, swap back to windows 10. I don't think I will have to do it too often, but I want the option until I get windows 10 all set up the way I need. I know some will suggest a VM, but I believe I would need to purchase a Windows 7 license to install Win 7 in a VM, and that would still be starting from scratch, getting everything set up again, so not really what I'm looking to do. My thought is to have an AB switch (even if located inside the case), so I can just shutdown, flip the switch, and boot back in, without having to keep swapping cables. Does something like this exist? 2nd, if I upgrade in place and Win 10 activates with my current product key, does that mean if I swap back to the clone of my Win 7 that it will say no longer activated? If so, what does that do? Will it stop working after 30 days, or just restrict some features like changing wallpaper, etc.? Thank you. [link] [comments]
My volume control shortcut launches in the middle left side off my display Posted: 17 Jan 2020 03:54 AM PST I'm hoping someone can help me out with this, when volume mixer is opened from the bottom right of taskbar it opens in the normal position. However I have desktop shortcut so I could hotkey it to open without having to go to desktop/volume/volume mixer The problem im having is when I launch this shortcut it opens in the middle left off my screen instead of the normal position being the bottom right. Is there a way I can change the positon that it is launched? [link] [comments]

windows key + space bar on windows 10? Posted: 16 Jan 2020 11:53 PM PST I used this shortcut a lot on windows 7, doesn't do anything on windows 10. [link] [comments]
Calculator doesn't seem to adhere to operator precedence Posted: 17 Jan 2020 03:24 PM PST If I type, say, 5 + 10 * 2, I'd expect the calculator to parse 10 * 2 first, and then add 5 + 20, giving me a result of 25. But apparently it adds 5 + 10 first, and then multiplies 15 * 2, thus reaching the result of 30. It can't be intentional as that's not how math works, and I refuse to believe this was a mistake. What's going on here? What am I missing? [link] [comments]

If i restart it, it will be fine for the first 10ish minutes, then it just stops refreshing. I have no way of telling what could even do that, especially since i'm not opening any programs. Even stranger is i just updated the BIOS, and for the first week, it refreshed. Now its back to its old self. Anyone have any idea? [link] [comments]

Increase Touchpad Zoom Threshold Posted: 17 Jan 2020 12:30 PM PST Hi! Is there any way to increase the threshold at which my touchpad pinch zooms? I don't want to completely disable it (Google search only showed me that). I use two fingers to scroll often, and also use pinch zoom. However, way too often while two finger scrolling, it ends up zooming instead. Any way to fix this? Using Windows 10, Dell laptop with "Dell Touchpad" as the touchpad driver. I only see a checkbox to enable/disable the scrolling, no control for threshold. [link] [comments] |
