    Simple Questions - November 04, 2019

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 04:15 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Post-Extra Life Thread

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:24 AM PST

    Hey all!

Now that I've slept for 16 hours and eaten enough food to feed a family for a week, I'm finally in a state to to do a post-stream thread.

This year we raised $257.60 for Charity, sadly Extra Life's servers were taken down by a DDoS attack which limited donations, though if you were around to watch the stream donations are still open and the site is working now, so go donate!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Twitch chat and a special thank you to NeverrSummer, Japetto, Inversion_Mods, UserRemoved and MedizinMadel, along with several other BuildAPC members for keeping me sane over the 24 hour period, by the end I was seriously losing my sanity.

The giveaway was fun to do, and winners have been picked, we did have some people who decided to try to enter the same giveaway multiple times (you know who you are!) but most people played fairly.

Here's the winners of each giveaway:

    Mice:

    krisoj

    zwiebi

    SirMrDuck

    PSUs:

    SapFireMC

    fkelava

    Keyboards:

    MK850: benjordan65

    SK 650 White: HunterDecious

    SK 650 Grey: z03h

    Mousemats:

    rulingshadows

    WhatItIsItIsForItIs

    Venesss

    Coolers:

    magnusvn

    savingwing

And again, a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who donated (especially Mr Pot Pie who donated $100!).

    Thanks,

Building a new Gaming PC - Last Build 8 Years Ago

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 05:20 AM PST

    Hi All,

Looking to build a new gaming PC for the first time in 8 years as mine is starting to die. I'm a little behind the curve in terms of what components offer best value for performance.

Objective of my build is to build something that should last another 8 years where the only upgrade I would have to do is graphics card.

No specific budget limitations, although I spent around £1200 ish 8 years ago so hoping that around £1000.00 spent will last another 8 years?

I bought a discounted GTX 1070 in Feb that I'm still planning to use for a while and already own a 1080p 144hz monitor I'm not looking to replace. Build budget is for everything but gfx card and monitor.

    UK based poster.

Below is the build I've come up with based on the limited time I've had to research. I would appreciate any feedback / changes:

    Any advice on PC Desks?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 06:49 AM PST

Trying to rearrange my room right now, want to set up a PC desk and been looking at Ikea. Now the problem is I can't set up in a corner.

I'll basically be set up to the middle of the wall in my room. Any ideas?

Will 60 fps feel unplayable once you get used to 144hz?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 07:24 AM PST

Similar as 30fps feels after you get used to play at 60fps?

I am thinking about updating my rig from r9 280x to GTX 1660. I know that I could pretty much play most modern titles at 60fps/high settings and older titles at 144fps+ , but I worry that if I also buy a 144HZ along with it that I will be setting 144fps as a new bar and 60fps at high settings for modern titles wont cut it anymore

My current part list is as above, just ignore the prices.

I am tempted to just upgrade parts, but am leaning toward a whole new build. If your budget was about $2000 US, what would you do?

I have a 144hz 1440p monitor, and I want to run Cyberpunk at Max at high frame rate.

My first step is to get a new Mobo and CPU. Maybe an i7 9700k with matching Mobo. I also feel the 1080 will need an upgrade, but not sure if it'd be worth it.

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I ended up ordering a R5 3600, msi B450 Gaming plus MAX, and 32gb of overclockable ram. Thanks everyone for your advice! Ram/Mobo/CPU was the way to go.

    Upgrading GPU.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:50 PM PST

I'm looking to upgrade my GPU only. I don't currently have any type of "cooler" on my current one and not sure if I'll need one for a new one. Can someone please fill me in on if I need one, which is best, and will it be compatible with my current set up?

Anyway my current set up is listed below. I was aiming towards an AMD RX 5700 most likely the XT since it's only a few more bucks. Or possibly a Nvidia GTX 2070 Super. I know one has raytracing and the other doesn't and one costs a bit more. I figure the gtx would be more future proof and most likely the smarter choice but I kind've want to hear some feedback from others.

Right now I mostly play fortnite and call of duty on it but would risk playing more hardware worthy games if my gpu could handle them better. Let me know on what you guys think or if someone can kinda help me out on the whole cooler aspect also since I've never had a GPU that has needed one to my knowledge.

My GTX 960 broke. Which graphics card should I get?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 06:39 AM PST

I bought my PC 2015. This year my GTX 960 2GB suddenly stopped working. I then used my onboard graphic cards for a couple of months. Then I decided to get a used graphic cards from ebay. I bought a GTX 960 4gb.

The GTX 960 4gb worked fine for a couple of weeks. Then one day when I tried to start my computer nothing happened. I pressed the power button a couple times and suddenly I noticed that something lit up for a couple of seconds and I also noticed a bit of smoke. I then opened the computer case, there was a certain smell coming out of it and I took out the GTX 960 4GB.

The GTX 960 4GB on one side smelled "burnt" like someone burnt plastics or electronics. I don't know how to describe this.

Now for the last months I've used again the onboard graphics card and the computer has been working fine so far.

Now I want to buy a new graphics card for up to 150Eur and since I don't know anything about hardware and what's good I need your help to figure out what to buy for my setup. I just want to have a similar gaming experience which I've had with my old GTX 960 2GB.

    My PC specs= Intel Core i5-6500 3.20GHz, ASUS H110M-C, 8GB RAM, 450W power supply (edit: Corsair VS450 Modell: 75-001835).

THREE DOA’s in a row from X570 motherboard’s... someone please tell me I’m doing something wrong.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:23 PM PST

    Old specs: * GTX 1660ti * fx-8350 * asus m5a99fx pro r2.0 * EVGA 750 W g3+ * Corsair vengeance 16gb 2166mhz

Upgraded * gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite AND asus prime-P X570 motherboard * ryzen 5 3600 * t force 3000MHz Ram * gpu kept the same * psu kept the same

this is ridiculous. Someone please tell me I'm doing something wrong. I ordered the asus motherboard above 3 months ago. Came in DOA, the board does not receive power. Tried to buy a gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite in hopes of that working. DOA AGAIN. Now, 4 months later, decided to bite the bullet and buy the Aorus Elite again. DOA. BOARD DOES NOT RECEIVE POWER.

It is absolutely ridiculous if this is the case. My old rig literally works perfect. I put everything back in the old motherboard, works great. Now I install the new parts on the new board, does not receive power. Everything done flawlessly, I've been building for a while but this just keeps me from investing into new parts.

Edit: it's not the power supply. It works perfectly on my old rig and I've tried the old paper clip psu trick and it tests well.

TL;DR - go with asus TUF

how does the i7 2600k hold up today?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:21 AM PST

My system was built in 2011 or so, and the cpu is an i7 2600k thats been rocking 4.8 ghz just fine this whole time.

Since the first build, i've slowly added things like watercooling, more ram, and have a nvidia 970 gpu, and for the most part i don't have any problems with the set up.

Though i'm starting to think about building a new pc early next year, ( keep my 970, hard drivers and other reusable parts ) and am wondering how the 2600k holds up today to the latest processors, and how much of a difference i'd notice moving to whatever the latest i5/i7 is.

Been out of the game for awhile so not sure whats hot and not anymore.

How safe is it to use an HDD with a broken (and ~repaired) SATA power connector?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:39 AM PST

The other day I was trying to plug in a shucced WD 8TB HDD (w/ tape mod) and the little plastic doodad holding the power pins in broke off (i.e. the dark grey L-shaped piece on the right here). So I ordered some replacement L-shaped doodads since the original had shattered into many small pieces and managed to (get my surgically experienced partner to) sandwich the pins between it and an adapter (except for that stupid 3.3V Pin #3) so that the connection is flush. A copious amount of hot glue later and the adapter seems to be pretty solidly on there, and I can access the drive's contents, write to it, etc.

Googling around, it seems most people do this to snag data off the drive before disposal. But are there any reasons why I can't just leave it on there indefinitely & use the drive for low-priority media storage?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Installed everything, and the process was going smoothly. When it came time to install my graphics card, all I measured was the vertical length and PCI slots to ensure that the card would fit into the case. The card fits, but there's not much breathing room. I began to wonder if this was going to work, but since I bought everything I was determined to try and make it work. It boots up, I installed Windows, and launched The Outer Worlds and Wolfenstein 2. Also installed the ASUS GPU Tweak tool to monitor temps and control the fans.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Well to no one's surprise, the card spiked at around 85 Celcius and then the entire computer shut off. Tried again, the same thing happened. So I decided to ignore the recommended fan curve, and just maxed the fan at full speed. It didn't crash, but not sure how I feel about the card running at 90 Celcius. I looked up some reviews for the card, and this appears to be a common problem with the card. But upon further review, this appears to be a somewhat common problem with all of the 5700 XT cards.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Here's the picture of the case again, with an additional picture of the ASUS GPU Tweak tool showing the max temp https://imgur.com/a/hGX3EUH

Provide any additional details you wish below.

So /r/buildapc, do I keep the card and live with full fan speed when gaming? If I return the card, is there a better option that will fit in my case? Any advice/help is very appreciated.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:31 PM PST

Is it normal for my 1070 fan to always spin? Its always set to 40% even when not gaming, it ramps up when the temperature rises. Shouldn't the fan be completely off when under 40 degrees? its a msi 1070.

    Configure Apple keyboard for Windows

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:23 PM PST

So I recently got an Apple magic keyboard from someone and I would like to use it on Windows. So far, everything is working perfectly fine. However, I don't like the location of the control key as it is too small and not in the bottom left. The fn key doesn't work, and the control key serves as both ctrl and fn right now. Is there a way I can make it so the fn key works as the control key and the control key works only as the fn key? Thanks.

    APU+GPU OR CPU+GPU??

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:10 PM PST

    Hey guys,

Please go easy on me! I am looking to build a computer for the first time, and hopefully not the last. I am looking for a pc to game on as well as use Photoshop and video editing applications. I had a few questions:

    1. Should I get a Ryzen 3400g or 2600x? The benchmarks generally show the 2600x to get better frames with the same GPU and better application usage overall. I am looking to get an RX 580 to accompany the processor.
    2. What is the point of getting an APU if you're going to get a GPU anyways? From benchmarks I've seen, the APU doesn't assist the GPU to give you better performance or frames.

    Thanks!

New build - mobo won’t power up

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 08:21 AM PST

So I've got a brand new MSI tomahawk and EVGA 750w PSU. I wanted to get the mobo up and running outside the case so I could go ahead and get the BIOS flashed before I put it all together but I'm not getting any power.

I've reseated the power and cpu connectors several times and made sure that eco mode is off on the PSU. I can't do the paper clip test because believe it or not I don't have a single paper clip in my house. I think it might be the PSU and I'm about to call EVGA but wanted to post here for ideas in case I'm missing something obvious.

    I've confirmed so far that:

The outlet works The power cord works

I have another running PC that I could use to test this as well but I'm not sure about something.... if I open up my second pc and just pull the power/cpu connectors from the installed mobo to the new one while leaving all the other components connected to the PSU, will this hurt anything?

    I appreciate any advice.

    Thanks!

And I was wondering if there are any recommendations that I can change to it, I'm still new to this so there might be things I'm missing. I am still a little on the fence about using AMD or intel cpus but I heard that if I'm only using this for gaming intel would be the better choice. My budget is around $1000 more or less. I'll be using this pc strictly for gaming, and I don't plan on overclocking and I already have storage. If I can spend a little more for something better I don't mind.

Can any monitor arm be installed on a pole instead of table?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 02:57 PM PST

I want to buy a new arm for the monitor but it will be used in a doctor's office and I want to attach it to the pole instead of a usual table. Will I be able to do it or will the arm fall off?

Here is the pole I'm talking about. It's about 2 inches width. https://i.imgur.com/hW4CEN1.jpg

Here is the new arm I want to buy. https://www.amazon.com/Ergotech-Freedom-Aluminum-Monitor-Weighing/dp/B00CEHME92/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=ergotech%2Bfreedom%2Barm&qid=1572846130&sr=8-4&th=1

And video with more detailed review of its installation if its needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBaiCyvGWy4

I've never used any monitor mounts before, so I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

    First Time Building PC

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 02:38 PM PST

Gonna be building my first PC after years of wanting to, but not having the space to. Now that I started college and have my own space I finally can. I just wanted some feedback on it and hear some opinions of others.

I am going to be mainly using it for gaming and VR. I am studying computer engineering so there might be a slight chance that I would have to use certain software that would be better suited with AMD hardware. I know AMD has been killing it recently with their most recent processors, but seeing as I'm most likely going to be using this PC for gaming and VR, I think the Intel processor will better suit my needs.

Options for speedy external drive storage

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 02:26 PM PST

Hello. I already have a pc, but I'm looking for solutions for getting SATA speed storage outside of my case. I have to hold a lot of data for my small business, and my computers already full of drives, plus a couple USB ones. I need to add more storage again, plus I'd like to add raid1 to one of my drives. I'm not a big fan of the idea of cloud storage, I like local. I've heard of something called a NAS that works over local network but they cost a little more than I'd like with all the computer bits inside. Is there any kind of..PCI-E card with wires to a barebones cabinet solution?

    HDD nor SSD showing up

    Posted: 04 Nov 2019 02:15 PM PST

My SSD stopped showing in my PC I checked the cables, bios, diskmgmt, everything, figured it died so just bought a new HDD.

My main drive with windows shows up just fine, but now this new HDD is not showing up either. The PC was built about 7 years ago(not by me personally), some upgrades have happened along the way but now I'm stuck and not sure what else to do at this point.

Specs: intel core quad CPU 8G ram Win 7 64 bit

Main HDD is a Kingston Old SSD was hitachi New HDD is WD blue

I'm not really sure what I'm doing further than a basic level and using google. Any help would be appreciated.

So after accidentally pressing either the bios or the clear cmos button on the back of my PC, it sends me to bios every time I start up my PC ( I can’t exit bios) and after talking to someone on fb he pointed out that I have erased my windows 10 and need to reinstall it. WFF? How did I do this?
