    Simple Questions - November 02, 2019

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 05:08 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Need help upgrading my low-end PC

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 07:36 AM PDT

    Hey Reddit,

I've been thinking about upgrading my low-end PC, but I'm not sure where to start. I was hoping someone could help me out with specifying what parts I should upgrade and what parts I can keep. To give some context, I want to be able to have a dual monitor setup and be able to play games like League of Legends and Overwatch.

    Here are my current specs.

And here is an upgrade I tried to make myself.

So my budget is around €500, I am from The Netherlands, im not expecting to play heavy games with the build that i made.. i normally play games like overwatch or LoL.

So what do you think of this upgrade? Is it even a legitimate build? Any help is welcome!

Is R5 2600X a good choice to go with RX 5700 XT for 1440p gaming?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 06:15 AM PDT

AAA titles, 60+ fps on High settings.

Asking because people usually recommend R5 3600/3600X for this GPU, but those cost quite a bit more and would also require a more expensive mobo. So how much of a bottleneck would 2600X be? Is it worth to shell out for a 3rd gen Ryzen or will 2nd gen be good enough for this kind of performance?

Cheap/effective way to upgrade this PC for HTC Vive ready status?

    DxDiag

The checker from Valve says my PC is nearly ready for VR. Only the processor has a question mark.

I'm wondering what would be the best way to make my PC ready for the HTC Vive. Anybody got some tips?

    Choosing the right 2060.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 06:45 AM PDT

Hello. I'm looking for a new gpu, currently chose the rtx 2060 ones (including SUPER).

Help me choose the best of those:

    https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/geforce-rtx-2060-gaming-z-6g - 448,62

    https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-RTX-2060-SUPER-GAMING-X - 472,02

    https://www.aorus.com/GV-N206SAORUS-8GC - 475,00

    https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Graphics-Card/GV-N2060GAMINGOC-PRO-WHITE-6GD#kf - 408,78

Playing on 1080p 144hz. Not aiming for ultra graphics, except in Subnautica, there I would like to enjoy the game and not play competitively. Mostly for cs:go, pubg, fortnite. Should I pay a bit more for Super? I am aware of rx 5700, rx 5700 xt, but I don't want to deal with unstability that I have read from others. I don't really want to go over 500eur if you are suggesting any other card.

First build-Fans spinning and RGB on but no video on monitor

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:10 PM PDT

I'm doing my first build and have run into a bit of a snag, my PC powers on fine but when plugged into my monitor I get a "no signal" error. The CPU fan and chasis fan on my case are spinning, RAM RGB is on, GPU RGB and fans are on, and case RGB is on. However, power button will turn on PC but not turn off PC no matter how long the button is held. Reset button does not work either. When Keyboard is plugged into both the motherboard and the case RGB is off.

    Attempted fixes:

-Re-plug all plugs on motherboard in case error was made.

    -Moved RAM from a2 b2 to a1 b1.

-Plug both VGA and HDMI cable into motherboard and GPU after each change to see if it worked.

-Tested monitor using HDMI cable connected to laptop, which worked.

    My components:

    -AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor

    -ASRock B450 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard

    -Team T-Force Delta RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory

-Western Digital Blue 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

-MSI GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB GAMING X Video Card

-Aerocool Cylon ATX Mid Tower Case

-EVGA B3 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Any help would be so appreciated. Will try to respond to questions and provide more info if questions are asked.

    Thanks!

Today I was building my first ever PC and nothing worked

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:37 PM PDT

I go to turn it on, nothing. So the person who is helping me suggests we take out each part one by one to see what is broken. We did, nothing. After a very stressful 10 minutes he realised we plugged it in one set of pins to far to the left. Morale of the story is, if you're using a MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX and it isn't turning on, check to see if it's just that you put them into the wrong set of pins.

Is this a good upgrade? Are they compatible?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 03:26 PM PDT

I've decided to upgrade my pc this year. Sorry this is my first time upgrading/building a PC.

    My current setup:

MOBO: Asrock Super Alloy N68-GS4 fx r2.0 GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1050 Ti Case: Akyga AK995BK PSU: Be quiet! 400W Pure Power 10 CPU: AMD Fx-8370 with stock cooler MEM: 2x4 GB RAM 2100 mhz (DDR3)

    New setup?

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600x Cooler: Be Quiet! Dark rock pro 4 MOBO: GIGABYTE B450M S2H Case: Cooler Master MasterBox MB600L OR MasterBox Q300L

GPU: 1050 Ti (I know it will bottleneck the CPU but I'll upgrade to 1080 Ti somewhere in the future) MEM: Kingston HyperX Predator 16GB PSU: I'll keep it until I get a 1080 Ti

Should I get a 4 RAM slot motherboard? I'm a bit worried because what if I get 2x8 RAM and one of them breaks so it's more expensive to replace than a 4x4 one

Black Friday Upgrade... I need help!

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 03:20 PM PDT

I need some help deciding on what to upgrade this Black Friday through the New Year. I am not looking for a complete overhaul but am thinking of spending $100-350+ I would prefer not to upgrade my peripherals as I am currently happy with them. In 2020 I will certainly be upgrading my monitors.

I am having problems at the moment with my current rig feel free to check out that debacle here

Here is what I am thinking of ugrades or upgrading:

    • ssd to a newer m.2 due to the age of the ssd (4yrs)
    • custom loop?
    • add another dual-channel kit of ram?

Rate my build, high end gaming

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 12:59 PM PDT

So I recently wrecked my old PC in a delirium caused by stupid amounts of overtime. Spilled a ton of coffee all over the damn thing. I think only the hard drives and ram were untouched. With that said, it was time to upgrade anyway. So I set myself a goal/cap of 1,200 USD for the new computer. I have a vague idea of what I'm doing, and when it comes to assembly, but I'm not a maestro. I've only interchanged basic things before, like installation of hard drives and changing entire RAM load-outs out. I have watched my previous computers be assembled if that helps.

So with the budget set in mind, I've picked out the following:

Before I go any further, does any of this even work with one another? Other thoughts; my previous video cards and CPU's were AMD and I would like to continue to support them - but I am not unopposed to other options that get me more bang for my buck. I'd also would like to know what power supply would work best with all of the above, thanks. Do I need more fans, or what I've got here is good? Should I pull the fans from the corpses of my previous machines to save money?

TDLR: Critique my current chosen bits, suggest potential alternatives, suggest power supply. Thanks!

Working on upgrading my PC, have some questions.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 09:55 AM PDT

    My current specs are

    GPU: GTX 1060 3GB

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1500x

    RAM: 16GB RAM 2400MHz DDR4

    PSU: EVGA 500b Copper

    Motherboard: ASUS Prime B350M-A

And then I have a 1TB Hard Drive and my case has one fan that is quite large in it.

I'm planning on replacing my CPU with an AMD Ryzen 7 2700x which should arrive in a few hours. And the GPU with an RX 5700 XT. I'm just trying to figure out if my motherboard is going to be compatible with the new parts and if my power supply will supply enough power to these parts. Any help is appreciated, thank you in advance.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

When launching ASRock Polychrome RGB ver:1.0.60 on this PC, the program is non-responsive on launch during "Detecting Peripherals RGB controller", makes the whole computer unresponsive and lock up. This is a fairly fresh Windows 10 1903 installation with all basic drivers and updates.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Tried updating BIOS from 3.40 to 3.50, then also 3.81 Beta, but problem persists. Even tried flashing the RGB firmware "nu51_2.10" with wICPFLASHADSB utility and it successfully updates, but program still crashes. RGB on the case works and can be adjusted in BIOS.

I have another PC with almost exact same specs and the software works on that with the same BIOS version, so I don't know what could be wrong.

    Is this build alright?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 02:36 PM PDT

Is there anything that's too expensive/unnecessary (better options) in just the pc build only?

I'm tryna game at 1440p with 120+FPS. With high to ultra settings in games like rainbow, battlefield, fortnite, etc.
