How to active the ethernet ports in my house?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 03:39 PM PDT

So there are 5-6 ethernet ports in my house that are not on and I recently found this box weird boxin my garage, which I believe to be connected to the ethernet ports in my house. I was wonder if there was a way to activate the ports by using the box I found. It is also located right next to my ISP box ISP. I even asked a technician if I could do it but he said it's complicated. Edit: Sorry if I used the wrong terms, still fairly new. So I need to rewire both ends of the cable since it is a phone line and at the panel I need to terminate the cables into patch panel and connect it to a switch and then to my router then the ethernet ports will be activatedhere's the wire layout inside my house -grey cable

Need internet upstairs - Troubleshooting pre-wired cat5e jack not working; alternatively use MOCA Adapters? (Pictures inside)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 02:59 PM PDT

Hello, I moved into a townhouse recently (renting from owner) and I have an upstairs bedroom with 3 devices that need an ethernet cable (not wifi). The bedroom has a cat5e wall outlet (pic #1) that I was going to plug a switch into, but the outlet doesn't work. I searched everywhere and can't find where it comes from.

Currently, we have google fiber with modem/router downstairs, and I'm running: modem/router box <> 50' cat5e <> gigabit switch <> 50' cat5e <> PC (only 1 device plugged in right now), all the way from downstairs to upstairs. This is unsightly (and ppl could trip or pull cable/break device) going through middle of house and staircase. I either need to get this upstairs bedroom cat5e jack working, get MOCA adapters to use, or any other suggestions you may have.

Here are plenty of pictures with descriptions: https://imgur.com/a/ouMtHG8

    1) Any ideas where the other end of the cat5e cable could be, that goes to my upstairs bedroom? - Can't find it on any other walls, closets, attic, etc. Not sure if it is one of the ethernet cables visible outside (see pics), but those may not be working now (appear to be cut or used for phone..?)

    2a) Do I just need to use MOCA Adapters running: modem/router box <> cat5e <> MOCA <> coax <> downstairs coax jack (pic #4) <> pre-wired coax <> upstairs coax jack (pic #3) <> coax <> MOCA <> cat5e <> gigabit switch <> cat5e <> 3 devices ......?

2b) Do MOCA Adapters provide fast, reliable internet; trying to avoid lag/latency/etc for online work/job stuff, games, streaming, etc?

    2c) Any MOCA Adapter recommendations?

    3) Any other suggestions to get internet upstairs? (not wifi)

    Thank you,

EDIT: We have Google Fiber, but previous homeowner had Spectrum... I opened the upstairs cat5e wall outlet which had a blue ethernet cable (no markings) going up. It is likely this is 1 of the 3 blue ethernet cables going outside, which are cut. Wiring it back inside may not be feasible (owner would have to agree)... I opened the downstairs kitchen wall outlet (4-pins) and it looks like the spliced blue cable from outside. See 2 pics (1.1 and 2.1) added to imgur link. Seems like I may have to go with MOCA.

EDIT: Marking this as solved. Bedroom cat5e seems to go to blue cables outside, so options are to send those inside (will talk to owner/roommate) or consider MOCA adapters (recommendations welcome). Thanks all!

    Fixed wireless ISP

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 09:34 AM PDT

Anyone here getting their internet from a fixed wireless ISP? How's the experience?

I'm thinking about ditching Comcast/Xfinity for a local WISP. The 2 selling points for me compared to Xfinity are: - No monthly data cap - Way faster upload (50-100mbps vs 5mbps at similar price point)

Advertised download speed is similar to my current Xfinity plan (~200mbps)

Several VLANS on one AP ?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 09:22 AM PDT

I am currently trying to plan how to rebuild the home network. The main focus for the new network will be on security.

The current network is an Asus RT68AC and a few cheap unmanaged Netgear Switches

The planned new network will probably not keep any of the old stuff (maybe if possible some of the switches even though they can't handle VLANs)

So far I have created a new SSID and installed two APs (Unifi LR and Unifi Nano HD) + controller on a Raspberry Pi.

One complication in the planning is that my wife repeatedly drag home unwanted software as worms, ad backdoor stuff etc. She says she is very careful but even then it has happened several times.

My plan is to try to separate her devices (PC + Phone) from other devices as much as possible and open a few ports to other VLANs with common network resources so she can do printouts and access files on the NAS.

Therefore: One SSID + VLAN just for her two devices.

My main question: Is it possible for the APs to carry her SSID + VLAN and also at least one other SSID + VLAN ? And if it is possible, it this the right way to go? Other suggestions?

(If I have to buy separate APs just for her its going to be a bit expensive and probably look a bit odd with that many APs on the walls/roof)

    Hosting 2 servers on a home modem/router?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:35 PM PDT

Hi, I'm currently running a webserver on an old computer hooked up to my Netgear AC1750 modem/router. I have another old computer that I don't use and I'd like to use that as a second server.

Is it possible to hook both of them up to the wireless router as servers? How would you direct the traffic for each server to the right machine? In an industrial network, that would be done by the switch(es), but is it possible to do this with a home network?

    Hitron CODA-4582 vs Ubiquiti ER-4

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 06:28 PM PDT

ive got a 1 gbps down and 125 mbps upload connection, with about 50 clients connected over asus access points. currently i am using the hitron coda-4582 as my modem router which connects to a switch which gives internet to all my routers.
now my question is that is this hitra coda 4582 powerful enough to do all this plus much more? or would upgrading to the er-4 give me and my clients better connectivity, speeds, qos, etc?

    thanks

Why are there no reasonably priced 10Gb Base-T switches?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 10:26 AM PDT

The tech has been out for 20 years.

1Gb Base-T went mainstream with Apple Macs in the very early 2000s, with unmanaged gigabit switch prices tumbling shortly thereafter.

But beyond 1Gb Base-T for the consumer market - nothing for 2 decades.

    Why?

Wifi starts fast, slows down to 0 send and recieve packets, then gets fast again

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 04:49 PM PDT

I've been having a problem with my wifi all week. I don't know what anyone did to make it worse, but my wifi has always been around 90 mbps upload and download. However, recently, it's been 90, but then it'll drop to 0, then after around 10 seconds it'll come back up to 90. I noticed this happens more to the upload speed, but it does happen to the download as well. My video games have been unplayable due to this. (Edit: I use wireless internet, but this has never happened to me on the scale it's been happening recently)

100 foot patch cable. Cat 6 or 6a?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 02:48 AM PDT

Guessing cat 6 since it's in spec for the distance but just wondering if I should do 6a if it might provide any other benefits? Thanks.

I'd be using it for an access point and streaming movies/games from one PC to another.

    Am I going crazy?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 09:14 AM PDT

I have the AT&T fiber wireless router you get when they do the installation. I work from home so I am on web meetings a lot as well as doing a number of other things requiring bandwidth. I also stream TV and other IoT devices. I've had this for about two years. It seems like I have to reboot this thing every other day. Is it possible that I'm putting more wear on it than it can handle. Should I pick up another wireless router?

I cannot figure this out. I seek your assistance.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 10:19 AM PDT

    Greetings All,

First thank you for taking the time to read this.

    OS: Windows 10

ISP: Verizon FIOS 1 Gig Line

Router: Old & Current - Verizon Fios Gateway Router New(wanna switch to): ROG Rapture GT-AX11000

    Story:

I was away from home and the ISP had reset my FIOS Gateway router because apparently the wifi went down. This happened 2 days ago after a family member called them to ask them to fix it. So they reset it.

I got home a day ago with new router in a box from amazon the Asus router. I was going to install it anyway because I wanted the whole new WiFi 6 experience and I don't like the ISP ability to just reset my router as they see fit. When i went to install it I could not access the router the traditional way 192.168.1.1. So I thought maybe it picked a different ip range and it did the IP of the router was 192.168.50.1 but that still did not work. So i put in my OLD FIOS router to see if that still worked because it ALWAYS worked. 192.168.1.1 brought me to the "Unable to Connect" page. Okay so now I know its both routers that I cannot connect locally. BUT if i typed into the address bar "what is my IP" and I took that public IP and put it in the address bar it worked. Boom my router came up.

Asus Router: When I connected this router I had the worst time connecting any WiFi devices to it. My playstation 4 freezes when it is searching for a signal from this router. But when I take it down and put the FIOS Router up, it reads it and other wifi signals around just fine. Doesn't freeze or anything. So that is blowing my mind as well.

So now I know for some reason my Public IP works when accessing router. But not 192.168.1.1 .....so now I'm at a loss on what the hell to do. Also, my teamspeak 3 server that I host from my Intel NUC through Cloudflare does not reach the internet anymore. That was working before the router reset as well. I constantly monitor my teamspeak 3 server and my router.

First I need to solve the problem of not being able to access my router locally instead of using the public IP. I cannot for the life of me figure this out at all. I really could use your help if anyone is willing.

    Thank You!

I'm a little paranoid and everytime there is a new mac address on my network, I get a notification.

I have the Unifi ecosystem so it's easy to get them but now I have these two mac that appeared for 10 minutes each and disappeared.

I always do a mac whois on google but these mac aren't registered anywhere.

64:1f:01 and 66:1b:01 are the manufacturer of each of these mac.

Any one have an idea what they could be ??

I'm having such a hard time figuring whats going on with my wifi-5 signal. It's constantly not broadcast and looking at a signal monitor it's all over the place.I'm using a Netgear R7000 with the latest firmware(V1.0.9.88_10.2.88). the screenshots are reading the signal within feet of the router & line of sight. I've done a factory reset and still no luck, I've even changed ports and cables to the modem.

New router is preventing me from logging in to website.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:11 PM PDT

Router/modem came with new ISP subscription, and when using that network, https://www.ufc.tv/secure/signin? refuses to load. No problems anywhere else, and all other networks allow me to sign in there. After signing in, I can then use the new network without any issues.

I can access the router settings, but where is the setting causing this, and how can I resolve it?

Separate streaming media from large media download.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 01:10 PM PDT

As the title suggests, is it possible to separate streaming from regular downloads?

Me and my roommate have 2 internet connections, one of us likes to play online games (fast ping - low speed), while the other occasionally downloads large data files through the same network. we have 2 internet connections, one with faster ping but limited download rate, whilst the other network can download over larger bandwidth but most streaming services are blocked on it. My theory is to connect the two networks somehow and have them distribute the needs according to what is being asked. So if someone decides to play a video game it'd connect to the fast ping network, and if the same person decides to download something (like an update or a file) it'd connect to the higher bandwidth.

I'm sorry if this is a bad or there is a very simple question, but I don't know much regarding networking.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Any reason for keeping a moca network within the same version?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 04:53 PM PDT

Assuming that I already have a 2.0 bonded system set up, is there any reason to go with another 2.0 bonded adapter as opposed to 2.5? I know moca is backwards compatible but I'm not sure of any possible consequences to latency or bandwidth.

Ping Spikes / Loss of Connection

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 03:33 AM PDT

Since 28.10. I have ping spikes / connection timeouts - gaming is impossible. I ran Pingplotter and I narrowed it down to a error direct at Hop 2 but I don't know how to fix it.

ISP said no error at the cable connection.

I tried another cable but no difference. Router reset didn't help ether. Can't be my pc or network card because I have the same problem in WiFi mode or with network Cable at my PS4.

Ping in my own network works like a charm - see the screenshots.

Help or suggestions would be nice. Thank you.

Help setting up an isolated printer network

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 04:16 PM PDT

I'm looking for some advice setting up a network for the printers in my small office. I'm self taught and I'm struggling to get my mind around this one.

Currently I have a network of several Windows desktop PCs connected to a router along with a Linux based server. Some of the PCs have USB printers connected which are shared via Windows File and Printer Sharing. This has proven to be super unreliable and frustrating.

I want to set it up so all of the printers are connected via a network to the server (probably a VM on the server) which then acts as a print server for all of the Windows PCs. Some requirements:

    1. The printer network should be isolated in that devices on the printer network cannot see or connect to devices on the main network, the internet, or each other.
    2. Devices on the main network should not be able to see or connect to the printers directly. All printing should be managed through the print server (probably CUPS?).
    3. In the future I may want to convert the single server into a high availability cluster so any setup that would make migrating the print server VM to another physical host difficult/impossible is not ideal. This may or may not have anything to do with the question.

I've found several posts on isolated "guest" networks but these setups almost always involve providing internet to the connected devices and don't require the intermediary print server which allows access between the main network and guest network. That's the part I can't figure out how to implement.

It seems like creating separate VLANs and setting up routing between them is a general solution to this, but I've also read that VLANs are not meant to be a security mechanism and can be crossed if you set them up wrong (which is a strong possibility). I also have no idea how to do the routing between VLANs part.

I can definitely provide more details on specific hardware or whatever if that would be helpful.

    Some notes:

    • This Security.SE post sums up what I want to do nicely, but I have no idea how to practically implement it.
    • I made a sweet Draw.io diagram in case the description isn't clear.

    Connecting Extender to Mesh Network

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 03:35 PM PDT

Is it possible for me to connect an extender for the small apartment to a mesh network in the house? I can't think of any reason why this wouldn't work, but I'm not very knowledgeable around this area and would appreciate any input.

    Connection/Packet loss throughout the day

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 11:46 AM PDT

    Modem: Arris Surfboard SVG2482AC

    Router: Tp-Link C5400X

    Xfinity ISP

I am dropping internet for 10-15 seconds every ~10 minutes throughout the day, makes games impossible and streaming unbearable. Kind of at a loss here. I replaced the ethernet cable, tightened coax cables, tried different ports, even replaced the router from a Nighthawk x6 to this tp link.

I've read of others having this issue and tried a ping test on Google, My router, and my modem all at once. From what I can see, there is packet loss on the ping to google AND the ping to my modem, but not my router.
