144Hz does not refresh properly at 60Hz

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:52 AM PST

Setting my screen's refresh rate at anything about 60Hz produces a massive flickering effect, it's bad at 120Hz and worse at 144. Keeping it at 60Hz does not cause any issues.

Copying/overwriting folder and contents but retaining target permissions

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 09:18 AM PST

Ok, this will sound a little complicated... I want to copy a bunch of folders from directory1 to a set of folders in directory2, where the permissions are different, while preserving target folders' permissions.

    My structure:

    -home/ --admin/ ---apps/ ----app1/ ----app2/ -var/ --sites/ ---site1/ ----apps/ -----app1/ ---site2/ ----apps/ -----app1/ -----app2/

Folders 'site1' and 'site2' are owned by 'user1' and 'user2' respectively. 'home/admin/' is owned by 'admin'.

I want to copy 'app1/' and 'app2/' from 'home/admin/apps/' into 'var/sites/site*/apps/', only if they already exist. I can do that with something like:

    find var/sites -type d -name apps -exec bash -c 'for site in "$1"/site* ; do cp -r home/admin/apps/"${app##*/}" $1 ; done' none {} \;

But it will overwrite the target's permissions (user1/user2) with the source permissions (admin). So how do I overcome this hurdle?

Airgeddon is not giving the handshake, despite it seems that it capture it

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 05:29 AM PST

I was using few times Parrot OS live booted from RAM or USB as well. I have started the learning path with the basics, so I tried to grab handshake of my own wifi networks. I use an alfa wifi adapter.

I succeded few times, but now I am in problem.

I am choosing the network that handshake would be taken of and then the method of taking handshake (no matter which one of the three I choose) the result is always same. The small window is opened in the top right screen. After several seconds appears the string ][WPA handshake: BSSID]. This normally was the success and I was prompted to give the path for the handshake. I am doing completely same steps on same parrot os usb and for the same network as before and now it doesn't give me handshake.

Nvidia driver problem in Opensuse leap installation.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 04:43 AM PST

Yesterday after 6 hours of hiccups, changing to "nomodeset", manually connecting to WiFi which could be simple.... I have managed to install and run Opensuse leap. But I just couldn't get the graphics Nvidia driver running. I have used Ubuntu and it was pretty simple there with some usual minor hiccups. I tried yast res, manually downloading driver and it doesn't want to install. I must be doing something wrong and probably making simple things too difficult. What is the step by step instructions? HP omen 15. Dual graphics card with Nvidia gtx 1050. I don't mind if it's running with Intel Internal ones. Just need one of these running. How? Please help

A simple image viewer with "save as" functionality for Debian Buster?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:36 AM PST

When browsing a folder of images with an image viewer, it would be useful to be able to save the currently viewed image without opening it in another application or finding it manually in the folder, which is a feature that my current viewer, Viewnior, seems to lack.

By "simple" I mean something with relatively modern/"standard" interface (so not ImageMagick for example), and with convenience features such as automatic scaling, full screen view etc., something that is primarily an image viewer and not an editor, and that is easy and convenient to use.

System Completely Freezes On Ubuntu 19.10 AND Fedora 31

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:20 AM PST

I really hope someone can help because I don't have a clue what's going on. I originally used Ubuntu 18.04 and it worked fine, I upgraded to 19.04 and that was also fine. When I upgraded to Ubuntu 19.10 I started getting these weird lockup's on my system where the touchpad and keyboard on my laptop are completely unresponsive for 30s or so. It happens repeatedly and the WiFi disconnects while is happening. Logs are cryptic to me, there's usually one that says BUG cpu#5 freeze 24s, or something like that.

I got annoyed enough that I decided to switch to Fedora 31 today. Unfortunately, the exact same thing happens here too! I get a lot of freezes. I don't know what to do, can someone help please?

I have a Lenovo Ideapdad 730S. I'll run whatever commands you need for information.

    Hey all,

I'm a recent Linux convert and I'm trying to get my egpu razer core v.1 with a Nvidia gtx 1080 to work. So far it doesn't recognize that there is a device plugged into the TB3 port.

It works great on windows 10 still, so it seems like I'm missing drivers. Assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated :)

How can I install Mu Python Editor on Linux?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 02:09 AM PST

As the title implies I've found the Mu Python code editor but am not sure how to install. I'm running Linux Mint 19.2.

    https://codewith.mu/

The download page says this about Linux, but I don't understand what it means: "On Linux, in order for Mu to work with the MicroPython based devices you need to ensure you add yourself to the correct permissions group (usually the dialout or uucp groups). Also make sure that your distribution automatically mounts flash devices, or make sure to mount them manually."

    Thanks.

    Failed to connect to lvmetad

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:07 AM PST

    Hi Reddit,

I have (another) problem with Ubuntu 18.04! It worked fine until yesterday, when I connected my HDD and transferred a lot of files to my laptop. I shut down the laptop, then went to bed, and today when I turned my laptop on, it showed this message.

I read online it might be due to the fact that the SSD of my laptop is full (it is full, but I never had that problem with Windows). The suggested solution was to boot from a USB, mount the memory of my SSD, and delete some unnecessary files. I don't think I can do that, though.

I tried turning it off and on again, nothing changed. I cannot press any button, the keyboard doesn't work. I cannot boot from a USB, I can't access the UEFI (tried pressing F2 repeatedly, nothing happened. F1, F10, F12 don't do anything). I seriously don't know what to do.

How to get rounded corners with compton?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 01:56 AM PDT

    Greetings,

I'm using this aur package, here is a github page for it. This fork of compton seems to enable rounded corners very easily, but it doesn't include any manual or wiki. Does anyone know what the command in the config file would be to enable rounded anti-aliased corners?

    thanks in a advance

[KDE Neon] Need help with Energy Saving (System Settings Module). See post for more details.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 11:05 PM PDT

    Hello community!

For more than three months I have been using KDE Neon as my single operating system. It was KDE Neon that changed my mind about KDE.

After installing KDE Neon on his laptop, and set up: "When laptop lid closed: Shutdown".

A couple of days ago, I decided to switch to: "When laptop lid closed: Lock Screen", but "Energy Saving" doesn't react in any way to the settings I give him and keeps shutting down.

Also, the process of switching off is quite strange: I close the lid of the laptop, it looks like it goes to sleep, I open the lid, it goes out of this mode and continues to turn off (I see the Neon logo), it takes about 2-3 seconds.

    How can I fix this?
    KDE Neon 5.17.2

    ---

What I did, and what didn't help:

    I was advised to change the settings in: /etc/systemd/logind.conf (take off # before HandleLidSwitch and set to ignore -- didn't help);

How to change audio modes in linux?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:27 AM PST

I recently completely switched from windows to linux. In windows, I had a software called "Realtek Audio Manager", I'm sure you've heard of it. I could change the audio modes on it, for example, if I wanted more bass, I would switch to the "Party" mode. I can't even find a way to change bass and treble much less change modes. Please guide me.

Why do some games look terrible in Linux but great in Windows?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:04 AM PST

Specifically, I'll talk about Civ 5 since that's my most recent experience with this phenomenon. I was using Ubuntu for a few months, downloaded Steam, and started playing Civ 5 and it looked like crap. If I maxed out graphics settings, areas of the map would take forever to load and it would still look so bad! I thought, "Well, maybe it's always just looked that bad and I never noticed."

Then, then other day, I went back to Windows for something on the same machine, pulled up Civ 5 and it looked and ran SOOO much better! Everything looked cleaner, the map loaded instantaneously - it was great!

So why would it look and function so badly in Linux but work great on Windows?

Getting Linux Mint to listen to audio Line-In

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 11:14 PM PDT

So back when I was using Windows, I set up my Switch so that audio goes into my PC through Line in and is played back on my speakers through Windows "listen in" function. Reason I did this was because my monitor doesn't have a dedicated speaker.

So now in Mint 19.2, I'm trying to make the same set up but Mint doesn't seem to have that feature?(or at least I'm missing something). How do I fix this? I need to get Ring/fit/

I want a minimal install of debian but I can't have the system boot without installing the nvidia-driver. I tried several commands in su like apt install nvidia-driver-390 or command to add a PPA but I couldn't. So is it even possible to install nvidia drivers in tty1 ? If yes, then how? Thanks in advance.

    Understanding a VIM command

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 08:40 PM PDT

So I am learning about VIM for my class and I have a decent grasp on it however they give an example of a command and I cannot figure out why some of it is written a certain way. It is a command for search and replace.
    :%s/\<cat\\>/dog/gi
So I understand the colon is to enter command mode, then the % is to search in the current document I am in. I understand that cat is being searched for and dog is what is replacing it. I also understand the g is stating I want to replace multiple words if there are any and i is stating case insensitive. I have no idea what the
    s/\< \>/
    means.

New PC, bit of advice needed.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 06:24 PM PDT

Hello people, Next week I should be getting a new 3900x system delivered to me. I am in need of a good duel boot tutorial for Windows 10 / Pop_OS install. They would be on two entirely separate m.2 drives with a third 1TB regular SSD as a shared drive. I find I seem to always have to use the bios options to switch between OS's and I'd rather use a different method but I have not had much luck lately.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Manage repositories and PPAs?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2019 06:06 PM PDT

I'm relatively new to Linux (I installed Pop_OS a few months ago). When I first set up my current system, I added a few repositories and PPAs. After a while, a few weeks ago that is, I noticed that some apps apparently didn't get updated and upon checking, I realized that their PPAs or entire repositories had been deactivated.
The same thing happened again recently when I updated the OS and I even seem to have lost the standard Ubuntu repo because I couldn't apt-get sbackup. It also deactivated some PPAs of apps I'm actively using, like Spotify, Surfshark and the driver for my Roccat keyboard and mouse. I find that very annoying because I don't really get any indication it's happening and my apps just don't get potentially vital updates anymore. Do I really have to constantly check if any important repos/PPAs have just been randomly deactivated?

On the other hand, I have no idea which unused repos/PPAs I can remove because it's not really clear to me what apps I might not use anymore they belong to. Is there a way to display all installed apps belonging to a certain repo?
