Ubiquity spying feature in new firmware mandatory Posted: 04 Nov 2019 02:28 AM PST Since many people here are using the products from Ubiquity I wanted to share this, because the fact and the way ui handled this honestly shocked me. Ubiquity has included a phone home "feature" in all their devices in their new firmware. This "feature" transmits all of the device metrics, including sensitive data like type and time of all connected devices, first 8 digits of the MAC addresses, transferred data amount and speed. And no this is not optional or connected to the automatic firmware update feature. ALL devices with the current firmware do this! Eaven if you block the access points but still have a USG - it collects the data from them circumventing the firewall.
Here is a link to a thread detailing some of the ways they messed up I felt his information also belonged here Honestly I don't trust the company any more and as a Result will not use their product in any new products. Also I have to inform some people here that their new policy is not compatible with European data protection law and thus their network needs to be significantly - imagine their joy in that... Trying to sign into my own router through ethernet pulled up somebody else's? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 07:18 PM PST This makes no sense to me and probably you too but I'll do my best to explain. I have an Xfinity xFi modem/router and the 1gb down plan, and have been having terrible connection issues the past week or so. After speaking with customer support for a while, I decided to try to factory reset my modem/router and see if that would fix anything. It didn't. After resetting, I went to the router login page. After the typical admin/password login, it prompted me to change my password. After logging in I noticed nothing familiar. The SSID and password were definitely not mine, and I recognized none of the devices connected to it. I signed out and tried refreshing my page but it kept bringing me back to somebody else's router login instead of my own. I reset my device a couple more times, used wifi instead of ethernet, and even tried on my phone's wifi but it keeps showing me the incorrect router. I know this sounds stupid but I am also clueless, any help or ideas are appreciated as to how this happened. Planned on swapping out my device with Comcast tomorrow in attempt to fix the speed issues but it may not fix this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 04:59 PM PST I just recently got a set of Actiontec ECB6200K02 adapters to get a simple wired connection going to one of the rooms in the house, but I can't seem to get the adapters to connect to each other. The coax light won't turn on which I believe indicates they aren't seeing each other, but I can't figure out why. I tested them with a direct coax connection to each other connected from the router to a laptop, which did work, so the adapters shouldn't be the problem. What should my next steps be to troubleshoot the issue and get this working? [link] [comments] |
ISP throttling only specific websites. Would like to route only those through a VPN or second wan Posted: 04 Nov 2019 04:54 PM PST How can I achieve this? I'm using an edgerouter. I'm not sure why my ISP throttles although some sites such as Microsoft are heavily throttled and using a VPN yields good experiences. Can I somehow set a different gateway for this and use a VPN on my second wan port? (I have a dedicated VPN box powered by an aes-ni chip therefore 50+ mbps.) Why don't I want all my traffic forwarded through VPN? Simple, I have a 300mbit connection and my VPN provider tops at 50 mbps in my country. Yes I can use another server but that's a whole new issue with bank sites, and other business sites that block my VPN [link] [comments] |
Purchased house and trying to figure out how the Ethernet panel works Posted: 04 Nov 2019 02:39 PM PST Good day all, I just purchased a house and I am trying to make sense of the ethernet cables. I would like the whole house to be wired. Luckily, it seems like I have an CAT5e cable going to every room, but with the wrong face plate (cable and phone, instead of cable and ethernet). Before hand, here is the album with the 4 pictures: Currently, I just have my modem (that act as a router as well) and my PC connects to it via ethernet. My TV, Xbox One and PS3 connects via Wifi. I am having terrible reception downstairs with the Wifi as the office with the modem is upstairs. I would like to know if the following seems feasible with my current setup: https://imgur.com/gallery/XmYeHRO - Does Port 1 on the "hub" is a IN or OUT? https://i.imgur.com/waQZSG2.jpg https://i.imgur.com/gSMyw4k.jpg. - If it is a IN, can I use it as the entry point for internet and have my PC, TV and Xbox One plugged at the other end of Port 2-6 ? I want to plug my modem with Port 1 (OUT) going into Port 1 of the "hub" I couldn't find any information online for the "hub". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
How toAP mode with netgear n600 WNDR3400v3 Posted: 04 Nov 2019 08:05 PM PST Hello all, new subscriber here and trying to figure out my home network. Recently moved into a new place with existing Spectrum internet service. I can't run a cable through the house but did set up a powerline Ethernet adapter which gives me some decent speed when hardwired to my Xbox/Roku tv. But I would like to add wireless as well and I have a netgear n600 WNDR3400v3 modem/router and want to use it in AP mode. How do I do this? Weird thing is that when I plug an Ethernet cable (from the power line adapter) into one of the LAN ports I get WiFi, which seems odd, but apparently it starts to bug out the WiFi on the other side of the house. The first and main modem (from spectrum) is an Arris TG1672G. Other interesting facts is that they have an additional netgear wireless router hooked to that Arris with an extender hooked up to the netgear as well. Thanks for any help and I tried to find an answer on here but couldn't filter through it all. I appreciate it! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 08:00 PM PST Hey guys, I dont know if this is the right sub for this question. But my house has been using an absurd amount of data every month. Last month we used 1.477 TB and we have a 1TB plan through comcast. I just download a network usage app on my mac and even just doing a speed test online (Ookla) Used 850 MB of data in just 10 seconds. I dont know if its because our download speed is so high (430 download) that we're just going over every month. Theres only 4 adults that live in my house and we stream video a lot but I've never had this problem before. Any help would be great. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Reliable cat6a brands for 100ft? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:37 PM PST Does anyone have a recommendation on a trustworthy, reliable brand for Ethernet cables? I'm looking for a good 100ft run to get the most from my fiber. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
What is the best home network system for my situation? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 07:32 PM PST Hi - I am a keen tech enthusiast, but have a limited knowledge of home networking. I am looking to replace the Apple routers in my current home network system and am seeking advice on what type of networking arrangement would best suit my particular situation. My current set up is as follows: An ISP modem /router is located in a cupboard on the lower floor of my 2 story house. (This is where the internet access point is located as well as a patch panel.) Three ethernet out ports on the modem /router are connected (via the patch panel) to ethernet ports in 3 different parts of my house. These internet ports are connected to 2 Airport extremes and an Airport Express that each: operate in bridge mode; are connected by ethernet to my IMAC, TV etc ; and are set to create a wireless network with the same name. (the ISP modem router continues to allocate IP addresses but I have turned off its wireless network). My Airport wifi routers do not seem to be working as well as they used to, with temporary drops in internet and hanging on to low wifi reception when I move from room to room. This may not be all the fault of the Airport routers, but Apple won't continue to support the Airports in the long term and when one of them goes I will need to replace them all. My questions are: 1 Should I replace my current Airports with a 3 component mesh wifi system (using ethernet backhaul), or with 3 wifi range extenders (operating as access points and with at least one ethernet out port that could be connected to a switch), or with 3 wifi routers set as access points? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 07:06 PM PST My apartment is wired for whole house ethernet but our cable company installed our modem in the living room. I'd like to move it next to the panel and get ethernet sent out to each port pictured. From what I can tell by removing the faceplate, each room is being served by the blue line. I have no idea what the ports in the panel are for. Am I supposed to plug the ethernet coming from the modem into a switch and then that switch into each of those ports? I also am not sure what the single port on the top part is or where those white cables go or the single blue cable. If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Have a Archer C2600 100/10Mbps connection - high ping in games... Posted: 04 Nov 2019 06:42 PM PST ...is there anyway to prioritize my gaming pc over other network traffic, like netflix and youtube/chromecast streaming? Cable modem problems: signal to noise ratio? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 05:52 PM PST Hi, I've been getting ping spikes on my cable modem. When I check the channels, I'm getting 38-40dB snr for Channels 1 to 18. For Channels 19, 20, 21 it ranges from 4db to 17db. My ISP says that everything is fine but I disagree. Shouldn't all the channels be showing around 38dB? Do three bad channels make a difference? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:57 PM PST Just moved into my first house and am working on setting up the network. I have little IT knowledge other than what I've read on here, so I'm hoping someone can check my work and provide guidance. Here's the situation and what I'm thinking thus far. We live in a three-story row home and have Fios Gigabit. The ONT is in the basement and is connected to the existing router with an Ethernet cable. The router is on the first floor but could easily be in the basement and the signal doesn't currently reach the third floor. I'd like to run Ethernet to three rooms -- one on each floor -- with two ports each for a total of six ports. My thought is to get a Ubiquiti Edgerouter X and run to a TrendNET switch, which would then run to the ports, one of which would connect to a Unifi AP AC Pro on the second floor. The rest of the cables would connect to the various devices in each location. What do you think? Any recommendation for a switch? Also, am I even speaking English here? I'm mostly parroting what I've read on the site, so I would understand if I'm way off. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts; thanks! [link] [comments] |
Looking for an Upgrade to Improve Streaming Speeds - 4k fire stick Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:57 PM PST All, Years ago I bought a buffalo WZR-600DHP dual band router, and it has performed fairly well, but it is ten years old. I am now trying to work on streaming 4k items through my fire stick, and even though it is wired, I am just getting crappy performance. The wireless speed test and the wired speed test of the fire sticks were identical. From my PC, I can hit 220 mbps off the vpn (I use Nord) and 170 on the vpn. The fire stick both (both wireless and wired) off the vpn is 45 mbps, and on the vpn is 18 mbps. I have had multiple people tell me the last item that needs to be upgraded is the router, and one of those people suggested the ubiquity series, and go to a more commercial setup. Is the problem the fire stick is being throttled? Is it truly time for an upgrade to my router/wap/switch setup? Am I just missing something? __Edit__ Sorry, forgot to mention for those that don't want to look it up, the Buffalo router has N and G wireless modes. So a question is "will swapping to a modern AC protocol be that much of a difference" followed by "should I keep an all in one solution like a consumer grade router/wap/switch or go to a more commercial/pro grade like a ubiquity." Help needed - Mesh or single AP Posted: 04 Nov 2019 01:34 PM PST Hello, I live in an 105 square meter apartment with thick concrete wall both inside and out side: https://imgur.com/a/25V0xp3 Currently I have a low-end AP for my WiFi connection (marked with a red circle), but in the bedroom furthest away I have very poor connection on my phone and laptop. I have approx. 7 devices connecting to the WiFi during a regular day, which are used for everything from web browsing to streaming services. I am wondering if I either should change to a better access point or a mesh setup, but unfortunately I don't have much knowledge on the area. For the access point I have been looking at Ubiquiti UniFi AC Pro AP (https://www.ui.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-pro/) and for mesh I have been looking at Linksys VLP0102 Velop (https://www.linksys.com/us/velop/). Which one should I go with, and why? [link] [comments] |
I am having problems with WiFi extender after I try to use its Ethernet port, Posted: 04 Nov 2019 05:14 PM PST I have a Linksys WiFi range extender that I put in my basement. Upgraded my internet. Now my POE cameras keep dropping. Posted: 04 Nov 2019 04:41 PM PST SO i just upgraded my Verizon from 150 Mbps to 400 Mbps. After that everything seems to be working fine except my Zmodo camera system. The system is POE with a DVR. I have the system hard wired to my router and keep getting loss of signal from my cameras. i had no issues before upgraded. If i remove the network cable the cameras all come back on and work like crazy. Anyone have any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 04:32 PM PST We just closed on a home partially based on promises from ATT that we would be able to get their fixed wireless plan. I called today to get an install scheduled, and they are now saying we are not covered. I punched in a neighbors address about 2000' away and they are covered, so I know it's not a limitation of the hardware in the tower. I've been researching data plans, thinking that I could get a 4G router and an outdoor antenna, but I'm not seeing anything close to the 215G/month for $40-60 of fixed wireless. What are my options here? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 04:14 PM PST I went from Eero (3 pros) to one Ubiquity AC Pro since it has many more features I want. With it, my wifi speeds have gone down from about 200Mbps down to 78Mbps. I do have gigabit fiber that I am reaching speeds with when wired. I'm getting another AP that will be here tomorrow. Every device has a great connection along with low radio congestion. I do have over 55+ devices connected to the one AP, though. Nest cameras, Google Home hubs, Alexas, plus all of our devices. Adds up fast. My question is if adding another AP will help the devices have a faster LAN speed due to APs sharing the load? I am new to this, so please excuse my ignorance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 10:08 AM PST I was looking at projectors, and how people get hdmi to them— I read passive hdmi craps our around 15ft. Anyways, looking into these devices, I was a bit confused how these work. Are they compressing your data? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2019 12:04 PM PST Good afternoon, all - I'll be starting my foray into PC gaming soon. To keep it out of the way from Bae, I'll have the PC in a bedroom away from my router/modem. I know hard lining into the PC is the way to go, but some people have suggested a Mesh system, which I know literally nothing about. Would this be a recommended course of action? If so, could any of you lovely people give me brief layout of how the Mesh system works, and a recommended product? Or, should I get another modem/router combo and stick it in that back bedroom? There is a cable outlet back there already. I'm not sure if it's live, but a quick call to Cox can take care of that. Thanks to all who respond. I appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to setup a 2nd router with a powerline adapter? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 03:49 PM PST Hello, first time posting in here. I have a question. My router (bell hub 3000) is downstairs. I do my gaming/ alot of stuff upstairs in my room. For gaming I have a powerline adapter(no wireless) to my pc in my upstairs bedroom which has solved my problem of getting a decent connection for my desktop gaming. My problem is with the wifi signal of the downstairs bell homehub which seems to sometimes drop out from time to time or I am forced to sit there and twiddle my thumbs while a video buffers on my phone or laptop. So my question is if it's possible to connect a router with wireless capability to the ethernet connection from the powerline adapter so that I would be connecting to the routers wifi in my room instead of the bell homehub 3000 downstairs. Proposed setup: homehub 3000 downstairs---->powerline adapter----->2nd router in bedroom---->ethernet connection to gaming PC/ wifi to other devices in room. If this is possible will I need to change any options or settings within the 2 routers/network? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Flashed Linksys EA6350 with OpenWRT and now it doesn’t play nice with my iPhone. Posted: 04 Nov 2019 11:57 AM PST So I flashed the router like the title says but I'm using it as a dumb AP in an office room where my wife does video conferencing. I followed the instructions I have it set to channel 153, 20 MHz width, wpa2 personal AES. It works great with mine and my wife's laptop but is abysmal on my iPhone 6s. When I run a speed test I either get 1 or 2 Mbit speeds or a "latency" error. On the laptop speeds are 130 Mbit (close to the max service speed). What am I doing wrong? I have other APs in the house that are setup with factory firmware but the same setting (different channels) and the phone works great with those. [link] [comments] |
Mesh Network question - Linksys Velop Posted: 04 Nov 2019 07:25 AM PST I was going to pick this up at Best Buy in a Velop AX5300 two pack for $699, but I've found that Costco sells the single router for $299. Could I buy two stand alone Velop routers and use one as a satellite node? [link] [comments] |
Recommendation for a powerline adapter that can handle 175mbps? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 02:13 PM PST Paying for 150mbps through Cox, but they give me 175 alot of the time. Ethernet cable just isn't an option right now. I don't want to go overboard on price here, but I want something that can handle said speeds. Any suggestions for me? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
