I know, it says "AT&T don't mess with it" but the installer put it in an inconvenient spot. I have very little space in the structured wiring panel and I'd like to move this further up into the corner. I just can't figure out how to get it apart to get to the screw(s) that attach it. I've tried gently applying pressure in a couple different directions but no luck.

5GHz network stopped working - Only working on wireless mode "Legacy"

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:34 PM PDT

Hey guys. I apologize if this has already been touched on in the past. I had a search but I couldn't find anything, but I might just be bad at searching!

So, I have a RT-AC86U (AC2900). I have been running this dual band router (separate channels - no guest channel enabled) for a year and a half, or so. Last night, the 5GHz channel stopped working. My Xbox was disconnected out of the blue, as were my other devices. The 2.4GHz network still worked, but there is a lot of interference in my apartment complex, so it is not very practical to use.

I tried all the usual methods shy of a factory reset, with nothing really fixing the issue. (Power cycled, changed channel name, merged then re-seperated the channels, enabled a 5GHz guest network, updating the firmware, etc. etc.).

Using a wifi analyzer, I discovered that the 5GHz signal wasn't even being broadcast at all, despite the 5GHz light being lit up on the router, and the router reporting no issues.

With my casual tinkering, I just now figured out that changing the wireless mode from "Auto" to "Legacy" (but not to N/AC mixed) restored the broadcast of the 5GHz signal.

I have no idea why this is, and the speeds seem to be significantly affected still (24Mb/s instead of the usual 45Mb/s - Bare in mind, I am from Australia, and our internet is the worst).

Does anyone smarter than myself have any ideas on how to fix this, or an explanation as to why my router now hates Christmas?

    Thank you so, so much!

Looking for new router for streaming Netflix and gaming

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:14 PM PDT

My family is looking for a new router since our old 2011 ASUS router is lagging and other problems.

So we are looking for a new router that is able to stream movies like on Netflix and for online games. Our internet connection is 200mbps and a lot of our devices connect to the internet.

So anyone have any recommendations, especially with Black Friday coming up?

What should I look for in a router when planning to use multiple access points

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:12 AM PDT

Bought a new place and modem and router will be put in a closet surrounded by heating vents, so not the best place for a strong WiFi signal to get through. There are multiple Ethernet ports in other rooms that I plan on hooking access points up to. All those Ethernet lines come back to the closet where the router will be.

Since the main router wont get good signal anyways, I'm wondering what kind of features my router would need in order to use better access points throughout the house to provide better WiFi coverage? Thanks!

    Do I need a CAT6 socket jack for a CAT6 cable?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:58 PM PDT

Hello, the constructor of our new apartment put CAT6 cables into the walls but to my surprise they didn't connect them on both sides, so here I am to learn about the whole thing!

While at a shop, besides getting the crimping tool and CAT6 connectors, I was convinced by a sales guy to replace the socket jacks for CAT6 ones.

Here are the two jacks I am talking about: https://postimg.cc/gallery/3fl66opfm/

So my question is the following: are those CAT6 jacks really more performent (better pins?) than the jack I already had in place? I like them anyway because they seem easier to connect the cable to, but I wonder if it's necessary or not?

    Thanks in advance!

I’m done with Netgear, I’d like a next level router. Amplifi and eero seem pretty good. Any other ones to check out?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:03 PM PDT

I have 1 Gbps speeds with Comcast. Also just upgraded my modem to Motorola MB8600. I'd like a couple ports on the router, eero only has 2. And USB. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm a bit of a noob but looking to learn more, this subreddit has great info. TIA

    Rural 4G Internet Verizon

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 02:17 PM PDT

Looking for internet providers that run off Verizon's network. So far I have found:

    Unlimitedville (expensive!)

Blazing Hog (very negative reviews on customer service)

I know some of these networks do not have large marketing budgets and can be easy to miss.

Guys Help me, i have 8 hours till i can leave for the Store.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 02:08 PM PDT

Hey there this is my first Post here and currently my Setup doesn't look impressive at all.
I actually didn't plan on changing anything so far, but today suddenly my Internet disconnected.

After having a call with my ISP (Deutsche Telekom) they told me my Router is now incompatible, well i have to replace it but sure as hell don't want any of the Speedports.

I currently have an Asus AC87VG and well i have been hunting for a new Firmwareupdate but no luck so far... -.- running on 1.05.18...

My Question is is there a better Solution than router to switch for the Mainnetwork and seperate Networks via Wlan for Guests and Flatmates(I play the bills and they will not get access to my personal Network).

What i currently have is, is the Asus Router and a cable which connects to my switch where all my devices are connected, for WLAN i and everybody else uses the Router with seperate Networks (switch has access only to main)
On the switch there are a lot of devices including the Server i am currently playing arround with... selfbuilt in a pc case and headless just a little project where plex, nextcloud and a few other things are running...

What Solutions could you guys recommend, and if so what devices to get(i am on a budget, university student...)

If i had to buy a new Router, the Frizbox 7590 looks kinda good, if you think it is garbage, tell me why and make a suggestion please.

    Thanks!

Just bought ASUS AX11000 maybe AiMesh?

I just bought the ASUS AX11000 and I'm getting good speeds but was thinking of AiMesh with the ASUS AC5300 which was what the AX replaced. Would I get much better speed having 2 AX instead of the 2 different ones?

Set up tp link as ethernet conection

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 04:55 PM PDT

hi! i need help setting up my tp link, i have the router in the living room, and the pc (doesnt have wifi, only cable conexion) in one room. So, to conect it to internet i decided to buy a tp link extender and conect the ethernet to the tp link port.

I set up the wifi conections, but i dont know what is the optimal set up for ONLY ehternet , the wifi has 2.4 and 5 GHz wifis to conect, and the tp link has this option :

    • High Speed Mode - High Speed Mode relay only a single WiFi signal band. There are two High Speed Mode:
    1. Connect to the main router or AP on the 2.4GHz band and connect to your devices on the 5GHz band;
    2. Connect to the main router or AP on the 5GHz band and connect to your devices on the 2.4GHz band.

Each band has one CPU. In Single Band Mode, both CPUs are used for the single band communication. Thus, High Speed Single Band Modes are twice as fast as Dual Band Mode.

repeating, i dont want to use the tplink as wifi spot, only to conect the pc with wire as ethernet, (I have a 1G of ehternet port in the pc and 600Mb in the router)

    thanks

Synology DS218 + roku ultra for home only.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 04:54 PM PDT

I'm looking into putting all of our bluray and dvds onto a synology DS218. We will be looking to use plex on our roku ultras within our home only. We will NOT be looking to stream to devices that are not on our home network. We will at some point also have 4k content, but none as of now.

I keep hearing about transcoding issues but every post i see is about streaming to mobile devices which we will not be doing.

So I guess my question is do I need to worry about transcoding when streaming on my local network?

Why is it so hard to pick home network gear? Could use some advice

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 04:46 PM PDT

First post in r/HomeNetworking so glad I came here. Too much bias in the r/eero and r/Ubiquiti and r/Plume where I have been this entire year.

    • Goal: low latency, reliable and rock solid, covers 2 story home 3100 sq ft and supports wired backhaul for all APs and can easily handle my 500mbit / 50mbit Cable internet.
    • Bonus: built in (only if it actually works) adblocking and website filtering and parental controls.

Early 2019 I bought Plume SuperPod 5 pack, had each hard wired CAT 5e...it sucked, unreliable, went down all the time, flaky. I returned and went back to my 2 hardwired Airport Express upstairs and downstairs setup, have to reboot frequently and wifi is just OK. I am using opendns DNS for content filtering and handle ad blocking with ublock origin on macs and wipr on mobile devices.

I was convinced I was going Ubiquiti, but quickly discovered a lot of complaints about stability, firmware problems, USG super old, 16 port switch unreliable, lots of beta devices like UDM are impossible to get and again buggy.

Then thought I would go Eero, only to find their latest offering is poorly spec and over priced, why did they make it bigger and yet it performs worse than the older eero pro?

Looked at tp link deco but it too performed so poorly in the wirecutter review.

Have considered Tplink EAP but still not sure if this is the way to go over Ubiquiti Unifi or if if I should go pfsense plus unifi or tplink.

Primary goal is better and faster (low latency) wifi. It seems the auto configure deices meant for home users are all mesh focused (I will be hard wired backhaul) and do a poor job at picking channels or optimizing signal strength. I would like to get a better setup for adblocking network wide, better content filtering for the kids, ability to shut off wifi on devices.

I tried pi-hole and am not a fan, the raspberry setup failed too often and internet went down, the VM I built on my always on iMac crashed a few times and internet went down. The blocking was not great and when I upped the blocking list it broke too many sites. Would prefer a more reliable setup, even if it means it misses a lot, better to block 90% without downtime or broken sites than attempt 99% and deal with issues.

Lastly I should say I do IT for a career, am comfortable with Linux command line, but I am not a tweaker. I choose Apple over Android, Mac over PC because I just want this to work. I don't enjoy the babysitting or tweaking.

Would very much appreciate some advice on which hardware to consider.

Mesh Wifi or better router ?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:12 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I need advise for my home networking. I have a 3 floor house (basement/first floor/second floor) with 2400sq/ft for each (7200 total).

I live in canada and I have currently a internet plan of 1Gbps with bell.

My network hardware are the bell hub 3000 (probably AC3000) and Asus blue cave(AC2600) connected by a Ethernet cable and located on the first floor.

My problem is that I have a lot of dead zone and my internet speed is going down drastically when I'm on the second floor or in the basement.

I have a average of 30 devices connected to the wifi.

I want to improve my coverage but also I want to get the fastest connection as possible to my devices.

I was wondering what could be the best solution for me and I want to hear about your experience.

The solutions that I found: Solution 1: mesh device like -google nest wifi (no ax) -linksys wifi 6 (expensive) -Meckur wifi hive (not to good review and no ax)

Solution2: Change the Asus for a better router Exemple : -asus rog ax11000 (expensive) -asus ac5300 (don't know if I will resolve my coverage problem and no ax )

Best way to create a wifi channel for upstairs?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:46 AM PDT

Hey guys. Figured I'd ask this question here for the best response. I want to create a second wifi channel upstairs while still keeping my wired connections. So here's my setup: Modem/wireless router combo is downstairs, and I run an ethernet cable from that modem upstairs to an ethernet switch that's used to run wired connections to my two gaming consoles for stability (i don't want to game on wifi). However, my wifi signal upstairs is garbage but I want a decent wifi connection upstairs for my phone, and a couple other devices like my macbook and Nintendo Switch while i'm in handheld mode. I've been doing some googling and it appears I can't run modem - switch - router. Say I buy a wireless router for upstairs, I'd intend to plug my gaming consoles directly into that via ethernet and use the wifi signal for the other devices mentioned. Is the router going to act like a switch for my wired connections? Would I be losing stability if I do this? Is there a better way/device to consider? I play games like overwatch and Smash bros where network stability is very important, and i DO NOT want to game on wifi because of this. Thanks in advance

Nighthawk MR1100 with cellar data speeds slower than the grass growing in my yard.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:30 AM PDT

I purchased a Nighthawk MR1100 cellar router and an unlimited data plan with AT&T yesterday, and am pretty disappointed. My primary cell carrier is Verizon and my data coverage with them is not much better, but I went with AT&T after figuring out an AT&T cell tower was less a mile or so away from my house.

I don't live in an overly rural area, I am less than 10 minutes away from a medium-sized city. My living area is more of an underdeveloped Indian reservation than rural anything. I don't have any other internet options aside from cellar or satellite.

With speed tests via Ookla, my setup is testing at 0.5-3 download/.2 upload/60-100 ping. In practical application, I am consistently getting a 500 kb/s download. I have been picking away at a 2GB software update for around 8-12 hours now. I am using a Netgear 6000450 MIMO Antenna with my setup, and have tried positioning the Antenna and nighthawk in every place I can think of throughout my home.

I don't know much about networking, I am wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and has any suggestions to optimize my setup. A consistent 10 MB download would be life-changing, any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated. I am considering a beefer outdoor mounted antenna if anyone has had success with this option I would appreciate learning more about the setup you used.

TL;Dr: The data speeds I am getting with my AT&T cellar data setup makes me feel confused and bad about myself. What should I do?

    WireShark question

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:29 AM PDT

So, I'm trying WireShark for the first time. I'm sniffing my own Wi-Fi network to learn. I'm watching YouTube tutorials and I'm trying to capture my iPhone from my Mac.

Basically, I found a non-HTTPS site, used random name/password, tried to log in, and I see my iPhone IP appearing on WireShark, but it will not sniff a HTTP protocol for the life of me.

    Any idea why?

Subdomains with nginx: is it even possible?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:08 PM PDT

My general use domain is some.domain.net. I will host a private chat for friends on chat.some.domain.net, and while I'm at it, move some admin dashboards to subdomains. I've heard nginx can do this, but I'm not really sure and I'd rather not waste hours of time just to discover that it won't work.

And if it can work, how will port forwarding work with it?

    Non-Wifi Router

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:23 AM PDT

I live in a 4 story townhouse (basement + 3 stories). Each room had cat5e outlets that I had converted from telephone jacks to Ethernet jacks recently. Each of these outlets come from basement near the rear of the condo.
In the basement I currently have the following set-up.
Coax from outside -> Modem -> Wireless Router -> Switch -> Outlets throughout the house.
Because of interference from neighboring townhouses and the verticality of 4 stories I am having trouble with Wifi signal strength in my bedrooms on the top floor.
Should I invest in a eero/google mesh wifi system? Can I buy a non-wifi router then move the wireless router to a more centralized location and turn of DHCP settings?
Note: I do not want to purchase ubiquiti equipment and APs then run PoE Ethernet wires through my ceilings on each floor as I do not have an attic (vaulted ceilings in the top story).

Port negotiation issues with Actiontec C3000A

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 08:40 AM PDT

I just had CenturyLink put in and they gave me an Actiontec C3000A modem. The discussion I've read about the C3000A online seems to be mostly good, but none of my wired devices seem to negotiate properly with it. I've not yet seen a single device negotiate to a full 1Gb, and I have a few other devices (such as my pfSense firewall) that won't negotiate with it at all.

Additionally, if I connect any of my 1Gb switches to it, traffic that passes through both the switch and the modem will not exceed 10 Mb/s. I've tested throughput through just the switch, and I get near-1Gb speeds. I've tested throughput through just the modem to the internet, and I get near-100 Mb/s speeds. For some reason the combination of both do not exceed 10 Mb/s.

It seems like if I combine any other networking device with this modem, things get weird. Does anyone have any experience with the Actiontec C3000A that might know what's going on? Or can anyone recommend a replacement modem with basic functionality?

List of fastest internet by country

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 12:25 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/gKIOiah https://www.speedtest.net/global-index

I'm from Sweden, and we come in after the United States. Which i find really hard to believe.

Are they just taking the total speed measured and dividing it by the amount of tests? Is it the median speed?

Can't find any information in regards to this.

I live in Stockholm, and here most people have access to 1 Gbit/s for $30 per month, and 10 Gbit/s for $50 per month. 77% of Swedish households has Fiber connections, and +95% have the option to get it. Albeit, 1 Gbit/s usually costs $80 per month. (Sidenote, we even have 100 Gbit/s for $3000 per month)

I'm curious to what your home internet speeds are, and if these numbers are correct.

Terminating gigabit in a surface mount jack

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:52 AM PDT

I bought some of those surface mount jacks at Lowe's. They have the 8 screws inside and not the push down connections I've used in the past. I installed 3 of them without problem.

A few weeks went by and my entire network went down. I think isolated the problem to that jack, when I removed it from the network everything seemed to work okay. I had he router replaced but haven't used the jack again or tried troubleshooting.

Are these acceptable to use for gigabit Ethernet or should I replace them with the push in type?

Considering putting together a home networking solution with Ubiquiti products. Does this make sense? (concerning PoE)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:18 AM PDT

I want to upgrade my home network as my current router doesn't provide optimal signal everywhere, and may be having trouble with the large number of devices I have on the network (It's over 20 at this point).

    My current setup:

    Office

    • Cable modem (coax in)
    • Buffalo router
    • 3 ethernet devices connected to router
    • TP-Link ethernet over powerline (gigabit)

    Living Room

    • TP-Link ethernet over powerline (other part)
    • NVidia shield wired to ethernet

I was originally going to try to get a beefy AC1900 router/ac combo (possibly AC-68U from asus), but I've been told it's a better idea to have a few access points scattered around the premises rather than one monster transmitter. I've been looking at the Ubiquiti products, and their routers, designed for a more serious audience, are simply just routers (no switch, no access point). So I guess I would need all 3. Some stuff also comes in PoE, which isn't something I've had experience with, but is compelling, since I'm running out of sockets :).

I was eyeing the EdgeRouter 4 (https://www.ui.com/edgemax/edgerouter-4/), which meets my basic needs, but then I'm looking at something like this:

    Office:

This doesn't seem optimal, because it seems like the root device should be PoE-in/PoE-out for everything

    Living Room:

    • TP-Link / separate power socket combine to PoE injector (the adapter does not function as an injector) -> Access point
    • Second port of the TP-Link to the Nvidia Shield

Alternately, I could scrap the PoE switch, and just put the power injector up to the access point directly. I don't really see what else I would need in the office that would be PoE, but the only downside is I have need of 3 sockets instead of 1.

    Other option:

Buy the more expensive EdeRouter 6p (https://www.ui.com/edgemax/edgerouter-6p/), which has the same specs as the ER-4, but has PoE In/Out.

    Office:

    • Wall AC -> PoE Injector -> ER-6P
    • ER-6P -(poe)-> Access Point
    • ER-6P -(poe)-> PoE 5-port switch
    • switch -(ethernet)-> devices

Do any of these solutions make sense? I've not really dealt with this kind of hardware before, as my job is more on the software side of things (I'm a developer). So I'm a bit overwhelmed by the options. I've done a fair bit of research, but haven't tried it on a practical level so I'm not sure if these make sense (will work?), which option I should go with, or if it's even worth it.

The major driver to go with Ubiquiti was to use the Unifi access points, which should be able to manage themselves and do seamless handoffs , as opposed to if I were to get an Asus router/ap combo and just wire an access point to the living room. Otherwise I would just go with the Asus router. To be honest, I don't know if I'll even need both access points. It's not outside the realm of possibility that the Ubiquiti access point is more powerful than my current one and would be okay.
