Did you buy Arctic Silver on Amazon this summer? Check your email.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:17 PM PDT

I just received emails from Amazon informing me that I have been refunded for the thermal paste I bought on Amazon at the end of June (I never requested a refund). The thermal paste is Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound. One of the emails states that after a few reports that the thermal paste wasn't working as well as it should, Amazon investigated and found that it was actually a counterfeit product and that all who purchased the item have been refunded. If you bought this kind of thermal paste on Amazon this summer, check and make sure this didn't happen to you as well. Looks like it's time to find some new thermal paste.

Building my second PC tomorrow - transfer Windows 10 Activation Key?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 01:29 PM PDT

I just ordered my final parts for my upcoming second build. They're set to arrive tomorrow. Everything is going to be new (MoBo, CPU, Hard Drives, PSU, GPU, etc)
I want to gift my current PC to my wife, which owns a relatively shitty laptop.

I built my first computer in 2012 with a Retail Version of Windows 7. I did they free upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as it came out.

Now my Windows license seems to be tied to my Microsoft account. Does that mean, when I'm installing Windows 10 to the new Computer, can I just login to my Microsoft account and it will transfer my license to my new PC? Or will I have to do something beforehand?

Will I have to get a new license for my old computer when I gift it to my wife? What's the best way to go about it all?

Thanks everybody in advance for helping me. Since I live in Europe, I might answer late.

    My Motherboard Blew Up...

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 01:14 PM PDT

When I first put my PC together a few months ago I never though I'd be writing a post with this title. But, here we are.
So I've had this PC for a few months now. It's been working fine. I was mostly using it for light tasks. Last night I got home from work and went to wake it up. I clicked and moved the mouse, but nothing happened. I realized it was off. Pressed the power button, but nothing happened. I read somewhere that it might be some peripherals causing this. So I turned off the mains power, disconnected all peripherals, turned the power back on and pressed the power button. I was looking through the side glass pane to see what error LEDs would flash. That's when I heard a pop. I moved back and saw sparks flying out the back vent and some smoke flying out the top... I quickly turned off mains power.
Inspecting the components for damage, the only place with burn marks was a VRM Mosfet, shown here

The board is an ASROCK X570M PRO4. The board is (was?) perfect considering the size limitations I'm dealing with. After doing some research, though, I found out that the whole VRM setup is crappy; the Mosfets are cheap and the heatsink isn't nearly good enough. Now I'm not sure that this is necessarily the reason for what happened, but I'm now thinking of getting an ITX board just to be safe. There are a couple of decent options out there.
I'm more concerned with what caused it. I can't find any single reason for it online. And I'm worried if the motherboard being faulty is not the reason, then whatever caused it will cause it again with the new board.
I read that it could be the PSU failing. My PSU is a Corsair RM750X. It is only a few months old. I tested it using the paperclip test, and the fan ran fine (I ordered a tester to check the voltages). I also read that it could be a power surge, which I guess could be the case. But could it be any other component? And what are the odds that my CPU/GPU are still alive? Would it be safe to test them with the new board?

    My specs are:
    Motherboard - ASROCK X570M Pro4
    CPU - AMD Ryzen 3700X
GPU - Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8G
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2x8GB) @ 3200MHz
    Storage - Samsung 970 EVO 1 TB / Seagate Firecuda 2 TB

I never attempted overclocking on this machine. I ran BIOS v1.90 found here.

What is going on with the Sabrent Rocket right now?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:09 AM PDT

I've seen a couple times now that Sabrent recently switched to a cheaper design of something without telling anybody? Not sure exactly what's going on, would like some clarification since I planned on buying it

I'd seen this link floating around the subreddit discord: https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RENHI35Z35D0M/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B07KGMBCKD

How many PC gamers are actually gaming "comfortably" at 4K/60Hz?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:23 PM PDT

I'm curious as to how many have taken the quantum leap, and when I say "comfortably", I mean at least med/high settings @60Hz. I see all these posts and articles of folks with 1080 ti's, 2080 S's and non S's, and 2080 ti's but they're all talking about 1440p 144Hz. I have an old i7 4790 (non K), 32gb 1600mhz ram, GTX 1080ti, 1TB Crucial ssd, and 650w gold Seasonic. I have a 4K/60 display and even though it supports 1440p natively, I only play Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1440p. Forza H4, Madden 20, 2k20, DMC5, SFV, MvC Infinite, Hellblade, GTA V, Hitman 2, and a few others all play on 4k high settings with few needing a medium tweak here and there.

I figured shooting for 1440p 144Hz would require a more expensive cpu. At 4K the highest cpu usage I've seen was 69%, but it's usually in the 40-50% range. So why haven't most taken the jump? 4k displays are very reasonable plus it's less taxing on the cpu.

    Considering an RX 5700 GPU

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 02:10 PM PDT

I'm building a computer for the first time soon and want a solid 1080p GPU with plenty of headroom. I have considered both the GTX 1660 ti and the 1660 super, but there are several games that barely hit 60 fps with those cards. RTX is a waste it seems, so that basically leaves me in the RX 5700 range. I've just heard too many terrible things about AMD's drivers, etc. Is that really a problem?

Before I buy this.. is there anything you would change? If so why?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 02:46 PM PDT

Hey guys, I plan on purchasing the below PC in the next few days, but I wanted to run it by the experts here for opinions first.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/P4PpGc

I plan to use this mostly for gaming, all on a 1080p 144hz monitor. I also run a couple of virtual machines on occasion as part of my pen testing lab, which is the reason for the excessive RAM.

I WILL NOT be purchasing the 1070, as I already have one from my current build and will be reusing it, but I added it here for reference.

I don't know anything about PSU's or motherboards, so any advice on those would be great.

I'm looking to keep this ~$1,000 (not including the GPU, already have this) so if I can spend a little more for bonus performance I will.

    Thanks!

Need assistant with my first PC build.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:52 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes I did.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I am strictly using my custom PC build for photography editing (no video at all). I would be using programs such as: Lightroom, Photoshop, and Capture One. I am very new to building a PC. So I'm not too sure what I'm getting myself into when it comes to choosing the best bang for your buck with quality. I did some research and watch few YouTube videos giving me recommendation for my budget. Provided my parts list below, if there is something you recommend to replace what I got so far on my list I am fully open.

**If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? No gaming at all.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? I want quality with the budget I have. Max budget $1100, but I would like to get that lower if possible. If I can get it under $1000 that would be great, but not huge deal breaker

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

New Ryzen build constantly bluescreens (update)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:12 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

    What is your parts list?

    • MSI B450M MORTAR MAX
    • AMD Ryzen 5 3600
    • G.Skill DDR4 Ripjaws-V 2x8GB 3200Mhz - [F4-3200C16D-16GVKB]
    • Intel 660p 1TB M.2 SSD
    • Seasonic M12II Evo 620W
    • Fractal Design Core 1100
    • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Super GAMING OC 3X 8G

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Since the first Windows installation, the computer has suffered from constant BSODs. Most of the time, the error code is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. The bluescreens all seem to be caused by driver ntoskrnl.exe. This seems to occur at random moments, even when simply browsing the internet.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • 2 fresh Windows installs (one reset via Windows, and one wipe and completely new installation)
    • Motherboard driver installs / updates
    • Windows updates
    • BIOS update
    • Userbenchmark, CPUX, FurMark and Memtest all seem to run without issue

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    BSOD information: https://pastebin.com/ubA4vpF2

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Update

I tried various memory settings, such as combinations of 2800, 3000, 3200 on 1.35V with XMP enabled and disabled, but still received a number of bluescreens. The new BSODs can be found in this dump: https://pastebin.com/2F3Es8YS

Should I replace my 11.5 year old refurbished PSU?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 02:22 PM PDT

I'm going to order a Ryzen 3700x + mobo and all, will be nice upgrade from 3570k :)

But my question is, should I upgrade my aging power supply which is running surprisingly well after all these years.

I'ts a Coolermaster m620 and I bought it on the 17th of June 2008 as a refurbished PSU from coolermaster directly.

Am I at risk or should it not be a problem?

    1080p 27inch 144hz monitor for gaming?!

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:24 AM PDT

Hi guys, I am looking to buy a 144hz monitor for gaming, i was planning on spending up to 290 dollars. I wanted to buy a monitor that was 27inch and 1080p. Many people say that due to the size the pixel density it is bad. I also sit very close to the monitor making it supposedly worse. I have another ips monitor for browsing and utube. and this monitor will solely be used for fps, lol, and mmo games. When playing games is 1080p 27,inch pixel density ok? Or is it still bad. I want a big monitor but $300 is my max

    Thanks for help

Help me choose which GPU I should get.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:04 AM PDT

Yesterday I was able to pick up an open box ASUS RX 5700XT ROG STRIX for $390 at my local micro center. It was a complete impulse buy. I have since realized that AMD cards are not the best for streaming, which I enjoy doing. I currently use NVEC encoding with my GTX 1060 6GB. I don't think my i7 - 4770K is really strong enough to handle the encoding.

I can get an EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER BLACK GAMING Overclocked from Microcenter today and there appears to be two mail in rebates for $20 each, making the total price $470.

Would I be better off spending the extra money to get the 2070 Super?

So I currently have a RX480 and a i5 6500 and was thinking of getting a new GPU so I can run Monster Hunter World better. Would the 6500 bottleneck performance too hard with a newer GPU? Also what are the current reccamendations for GPUs? Ive been out of the loop for about 2 years now and not sure about what parts are reccamended atm.

From Laptop to building a budget Gaming PC (1st time)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:50 PM PDT

What's good people, I will be starting to use a gaming pc rather than a laptop and would like to hear some feedback. I have created this budget build for satisfactory performance rather than very high performance. Let me hear your thoughts on this, is this a solid mid-range build? Also would like to know if all the parts chosen are all good/compatible with each other? Would appreciate hearing all feedback on this.

    (-$1500 USD, ~$1367 USD)

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X.

    • GPU: Gigabyte AORUS RTX 2060 Super.

    • PSU: Corsair RM650x 650w ATX 80+ Gold.

Cheapish easy to put together PC that can run music and art programs well?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:49 PM PDT

Kind of a dumb sounding request, sorry. Just wondering if anyone can help me put a list of parts together that won't be too expensive, and will be easy for me to put together. Would need to run music/art programs well, and output to a 4k display. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) I'm thinking budget-wise around $700 or so max. But if that's not possible, then I'm of course open to suggestions and any advice.

The programs in question would be FL Studio/Ableton, and Photoshop/SAI, if it matters.

Asus motherboard and M2 installation issue.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:50 AM PDT

Hey, I just ordered my new pc in computer parts and when putting everything together I noticed that my motherboard does not come with standoff screws for m2 that are already installed.

The m2 "screw holes" are just plain empty.

I mixed all the screws together in a box and went through all of them 1 by 1 but there no way they actually put one in a box.

The picture below shows how my motherboard comes with no standoffs installed, the other models of the same motherboard do.

I have spent over 3 hours trying to figure this out and I am about to give up.

    Help me please

    https://dlcdnimgs.asus.com/websites/global/products/QS7ifpxvMUkLbhTM/img/picnav-n1.jpg ( my board )

    https://dlcdnimgs.asus.com/websites/global/products/8lDzXoAo1PJ3hy01/img/picnav-n1.jpg ( same model different size )

SOLVED: This motherboard comes with a plastic ANCHOR and not an m2 screw.

Thanks, I am leaving this post in case anyone is going to google it.
