2-in-1 laptop for general use, 2500 USD budget though don't know if I need that much. Focus on longevity and durability.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:23 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2500, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-in-1 required.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is fine within reason. Ideally 3 pounds or less -- not looking for a 10 pound ruggedized laptop, but I want something that is durable if possible

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10. Possibly dual-booting some linux flavor. but 90% of the time using Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13'' is ideal but not important, I could go anywhere from 12'' to 15''.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some older games, GIMP, visual studio.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Kerbal Space Program, Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, Osu, Stardew Valley, maybe some newer games at medium/low settings. I have a dedicated desktop already.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard and touchpad would be nice. Should have HDMI or HDMI mini ports and plenty of USB. Would be neat if it was surge resistant since I'm replacing a laptop that got fried by a power surge in a storm last night.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

DON'T RECOMMEND THINKPADS OR LENOVO LAPTOPS. I refuse to buy this brand. Ideally no recommendations for Chinese-owned brands please.

My main concern is durability and longevity. I don't like buying laptops every 2 years and will gladly pay premium for something that lasts 5 years. I know this is hard to know until after the fact, but laptops with good warranties or brands with reputations for toughness would be great.

    Laptop for CS Major

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:36 PM PDT

I'm deciding between the Mac book pro or the Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 (2019).

Both of them are priced around the same, and speeds are around the same as well.

I like the dell as I can use it as a tablet when I want, it's a full screen looks amazing, and it's a great laptop overall.
Mac is UNIX based so programming is easier( I can dual boot windows), and most people have macs so if I need help with a program or getting a software from some one, I can get it easily with mac.

I like them both and I cant decide. Mac seems to be a safer option, but windows seems to be nicer to use in general.

    Laptop for chemistry masters

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:56 AM PDT

I'm currently in my masters year in chemistry (UK). I don't need anything fancy as I don't game or do anything particularly demanding. I do the standard netflix/streaming/social media stuff. I need something ASAP so I can start writing up my work. My project is in computational chemistry and I'd like to get more into programming. It must have a hdmi.

Im struggling to choose a laptop as my understanding of the tech is low. With my requirements I'm sure I could get a pretty cheap refurbished laptop but I also want to make sure whatever I get is going to last me a decent amount of time.

    Please help me.

MX150 Graphics Capable Student Laptop? [HELP]

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 12:05 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I am a high school student currently after a new laptop and I need it to be light weight, small but also graphics capable because I enjoy playing games. (particularly I would like it to run Dead By Daylight)

After looking through heaps of graphics options, I am after a laptop that has the MX150, 4GB, 25 W GPU, this is the better variant of the MX150 card. I also need the laptop to have a screen size of 13-14 inches so i can fit it in my bag and on my desk, it also needs to be pretty light and ideally look preeetty haha.

My budget is max 2 grand AUD and I would have gone for the asus Zenbook Pro, however they dont sell in Australia so I also need to be able to ya know... buy the laptop.

Sorry if this is a lengthy requirement list but any help would be appreciated because I have been looking for quite a while.

    Thanks.

Edit: I am more than happy to have graphics better than the MX150 if they fit the screen size and are available in Australia :) Like I said above, I would just like it to run some games smoothly, particularly Dead By Daylight

USA, $1500-2000, content creation, gaming, and programming

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:53 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

See title. I'll probably wait for BF to purchase but I'd love some recs for things to keep my eye on. I'm planning on having this computer for 4+ years so getting the right thing is more important than price.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Battery life and specs. I don't need the BEST in either category but better is always better

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Very important. I travel full time so the computer is on my back pretty much every day. Weight is more important, bigger is ok as long as it's reasonable.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Coming from Mac, will use Windows and either dual boot Arch Linux or use WSL for programming

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    14-15.6"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Photo editing with adobe programs, and video editing with DaVinci Resolve which from my cursory research is more GPU dependent than other editors. Also gaming, right now I'm mostly playing rainbow six siege.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

See above, probably mostly esports-type games. I'd like 144hz but I don't want it to come at the expense of having decent colors if possible.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Build quality is important, SD card reader is nice to have but not required

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I've had my eye on the Mag-15 for a bit, it looks pretty much ideal but I'm not sure if the screen will be good enough for photo/video. Would love any input on that! I'd probably go 1660ti/32gb ram/1tb ssd.

I was also looking at the MSI GS65/P65 and potentially the prestige series if I decide to forego 144hz. Any other recs/thoughts would be appreciated!

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

No 2 in 1, good battery, must have an i7 in it (but the graphics card can be bad im not going to use it a lot)

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Weight is very important as i will be carrying it a lot (so as thin and as light as possible)

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows or no OS

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

15' screen if possible (not very necessary but will watch a lot of movies)

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Fl studio (processor heavy) and very small amount of video editing and photoshop work

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    No gaming

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

No but backlit keyboard would be very nice since i love working in the dark

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

SSD is a must (512 prefferably but 256 will do the job) + I have found this one and it seems nice but i cant seem to find reviews for this exact model on youtube so i wanted to ask what do you guys think i should get

Good keyboard and build quality are key. A Precision Trackpad would be nice, but isn't required.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I currently have a T430 that has lost it's pep. I think it got slower when I swapped out the SSDs. I would love to be able to play games while on the go, but I am a die hard thinkpad fan. I don't know of used thinkpads that are good for gaming. I would like to buy this secondhand to save some money, and use the saved money to buy SSDs and new batteries for the used machine. Does generations of SSDs matter? The one in the T430 is from 2013. Idk.

    2. https://www.microcenter.com/product/606146/tuf-fx505du-mb53-156-gaming-laptop-computer---black

    Stats

    1. 1650 vs 1660ti
    2. 120hz vs 60hz
    3. $700 vs $750

Basically is $50 worth a worse card but better refresh rate?

If there is a better deal out there, I'd love to see it too

Suggest me a laptop for gaming.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:09 PM PDT

    Hello,

I need help getting a laptop. I will be mainly using it for gaming and for some video editing. I think these laptops from MSI are great! MSI GL63 9SDK, MSI GL63 9SEK and GL65 9SEK. but i could't find many online reviews about the MSI GL63 9SDK and MSI GL63 9SEK but i found some reviews about the GL65 series which is the newer than the GL63 and most of them said the gl65 was not a good choice (heating, getting loud when gaming). I'm looking to buy a MSI laptops because of their performance and good thermals.

Anyway i need help deciding which laptop i need to buy. The laptop doesn't need to be thin and portable i just need pure performance, good thermals and durability. And my budget is $1800 anything less than that would be ok. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Laptop 900-1200 USD. Good built quality, light and with decent dedicated graphics

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:51 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I've been trying to find a good new laptop to buy on Black Friday, and I would like to know your recommendations…

    My situation is:

    * **Total budget and country of the purchase:**

under 900 USD (1200 CAD). The best scenario will be finding an 1100-1200 USD laptop with a great discount on Black Friday. Country: Canada

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Battery life and specs. I don't need the BEST in either category but better is always better

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

that's important. Now, I own a 2.3 kg (5.1lb) dell n4050 laptop and I'm having back problems. So, I would like the lightest laptop, but with a dedicated graphic card.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows. I use Linux occasionally.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

15" or smaller. I think that 14" is the perfect

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I would prefer a decent GPU (nvidia) because sometimes I need to use some CAD and GIS software: I would also love to open up E-sport games or Fortnite once in a while when I'm not home.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    Pes 2019, Fifa

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Build quality is important, SSD is required. I'm looking something with 16 GB or 8 GB but upgradable to 16 GB. Screen resolution: is not the most important requirement, I would like something decent

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I've heard the gc mx150 is like the best option for a portable laptop. So, I would like to hear, what product do you suggest me to look at.

I would appreciate your help, I am still working on my dell n4050 from 2012 and I desperately need a new laptop. I would like to take advantage of the black Friday.

    Thanks in advance!

Looking for a new laptop in the $1500 range

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:49 PM PDT

I'm trying to buy a new laptop, most of the old one I had were bought at the 300ish price range and I'm not too gentle on them so they would end up pretty battered within a year. Thinking of shelling out more for something sturdier maybe 1500 or so. I tend to prefer bigger and heavier for my laptops, I don't want something delicate. I also have never really gamed but I am interested in trying out a few games, not looking for a gaming laptop but one I can maybe try a few out on. I don't really use too many programs or editing stuff, just torrenting, watching shows/movies, browsing the internet. Any recs?

    Surface Laptop 3 vs XPS 13 7390 2 in 1

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:41 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      $2000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Best Specs, Battery, 2 in 1 in that order

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Web Development. No Gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Will be more daily work device so reliability is important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Looking for a new 13" Ultrabook that I'll be taking to work daily for web development and casual browsing at home. No gaming. I've narrowed it down to the Surface Laptop 3 or the new XPS 13 2 in 1.

I'd be getting the i7/16GB/512GB model of either, which would be $1800 for the SL3 w/ employee discount or $1700 for the XPS on sale right now (though it could be had for cheaper, or the 32GB model will be $1900 on BF at Costco).

The XPS 13 is the better device on paper - better ports, better design, lighter, and 2-in-1 all for cheaper. But the XPS line also has a reputation for poor QC and other issues. I like the 3:2 Surface screen and more appropriate resolution (for the sake battery life) and the Surface hardware is always top notch.

Perhaps a potential deal breaker up front - I have 3 1440p monitors (overkill I know). Can the Surface Laptop 3 drive all of those with the right cabling or docks?

I'm leaning towards the XPS 13 given the value and flexibility, but something tells me I'll regret it later.

    Laptop for Revit

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:39 PM PDT

I am trying to help my girlfriend figure out the laptop she needs for her business (and whether she actually needs to upgrade). She is an interior designer and currently has a 2017 MacBook Pro (13"; i7 2.5 ghz dual; 512 ssd; and 16gb ram). My though is that this should be plenty machine to run anything under the sun right now.

However, one of her design programs, Revit, requires windows so it runs through the emulator. Revit 2020 is extremely intensive on resource from what I can tell (CAD, rendering models, etc...). It crashes pretty regularly and she is getting ready to just purchase a new machine altogether. The question is two fold: (1) would running windows on mac be such a resource drain that the machine cannot run another resource intensive program like Revit; and (2) if so, what do I suggest for her? I am currently leaning toward a Lenovo Extreme Gen 2 fully maxed out on upgrades (i7-9850H 2.6 ghz; 32gb ram; 1tb ssd). The Lenovo edges up to ~$2,700.

Anyone with Revit experience know whether she should be seriously considering a new machine like this?

Need a new laptop for development and potentially gaming.

Hello! I need a new laptop and I'm not really a hardware guy. Please help me find the best bang for my buck.

    Budget: $1600 USD

What I'll be doing with it: Software development/product design (CAD). I'll mostly be using linux, but I will sadly also need windows for a few things. So something that comes with windows is a plus as it will save me a bit of cash. I frequently use large datasets that I run analysis on, so the more RAM I have the better. Ideally I would have 64 gb, but I'm okay with going down to 16 if absolutely necessary.

What I would like to do as well: Game. Doesn't have to be anything crazy for this. Maybe a few competitive shooters/singleplayer games when I have time. I like to play competitive games on low settings anyways for consistency so I'm not looking for something that can run everything on ultra in 4k.

What I'm currently considering: System76 Gazelle and the Razer Blade.

Need help choosing between two laptops

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:10 PM PDT

First of all, I'm not north american, so electronics in general are reeeeally expensive. Just trying to choose a prebuilt laptop that will last a while.

I'm torn between choosing a laptop with GTX 1060 6GB but no SSD, only a 2TB HD (Acer Predator Helios 3000) or one with GTX 1050 Ti 4GB and a 128 GB SSD + 1TB HD (Acer Aspire Nitro 5). I do plan to use some heavy softwares such as Photoshop and Sony Vegas, also ocasionally game a little bit. As such, I'm leaning towards the GTX 1060, but not sure it's the right call.

Considering I never had an SSD before, is it THAT much better than an HD? I could buy an M2 separately sometime afterwards (thing's a tad expensive) if it's worth the investment.

    Thank you for your help!

Strong Gaming Laptop, Not Hideous, SUFFICIENT POWER (see bottom)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:17 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      • $1,000-$1,700 USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
      • Best Specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • Not important at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      • Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • 15-17 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • video editing, software design, heavy gaming
        • Adobe Suite
        • Figma
        • Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Cities Skylines

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • Red Dead Redemption 2
      • Assassin's Creed Odyssey
      • Cities Skylines
      • 60+ FPS without throttling, critically overheating, etc.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • Reliable Build Quality
      • Good color fidelity screen
      • Durable ports
      • Reasonable Cooling (I use a cooling pad and clean dust from my fans regularly)
      • Moderate to quiet fans (would like to avoid "jet engine" fan noise except under utmost load/heat)
      • Does not look like a wannabe stealth jet fighter/"Pro Gamer". I need to use this in a professional setting. Simpler external designs are better. Acer Predator is a little too gamer looking for example.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • Currently using a MSI GL75 9SEK 056. It has good performance BUT, due to MSI's "hybrid power system," under load it drains simultaneously from the battery and the AC to meet its power needs. I think the AC/PSU is insufficient for the card/processor. At moderate load, gaming sessions are limited to 3-4 hours before 30% battery is reached and the machine auto-throttles, WHILE PLUGGED IN. This is by design and is MSI's official answer.
      • It's still covered by a return policy and I'm rushing to find an alternative in my budget range that has this system's perks (good screen, powerful card, great processor, moderate fan noise) but a better power delivery system to avoid this ridiculous throttling. A gaming laptop that can't game indefinitely at moderate to high settings, while plugged in, on a cooling pad, is not acceptable to me.
      • I do not care about weight or thickness, though I would like to keep it to the same overall width (15.5 inch, 18 inch diagonal).
      • If you don't have suggestions but read this far, please upvote for visibility!
