We’re 6 months after securing $1M+; Developing a new app, and learning few lessons

    Hey Redditors,

A few months ago, I wrote a post about how three friends and I quit our jobs and started STEPS, a platform that lets people share information about places and things they love. Since then, things have happened pretty quickly. We secured more than a million dollars in our first seed round, expanded our team, launched, pivoted, and launched again.

I thought I'd share some of my insights with people here because I think it might be helpful to others in this subreddit. If you find this interesting or helpful, please let me know so I can write other relevant posts.

The most important thing I learned: our predictions and assumptions about how the product ought to be were false. We spent months thinking about and planning each detail, but the real learning happened once we entered the market. User feedback was the essential factor in developing our product; we needed to get out of the conference room and into the field.

    Here's how it happened:

STEPS is a platform enabling communities to build customized maps by collaborating with their members. But it didn't exactly start that way. We started with one map where anyone could add whatever they wanted – the jazz bar for the non-tourists, the hidden street mural, the best gluten-free cookies, etc. – all on one map. After launch, our map exploded with places and points of interest. Within the first two weeks, there were thousands of what we call "steps" added. People loved the idea, but they were overwhelmed with too much non-relevant information. The map was getting a bit messy. The jazz enthusiast found spots she hadn't known about before but didn't want to see all the gluten-free treasures on her map.

We struggled to find an organized solution that would preserve our initial idea and keep the platform with just one map. We needed to pivot. Our platform had to be community and niche-based to best meet the needs of STEPS' users. We had to adapt quickly and make maps tailorable to particular communities. So, we developed an updated product that allowed users to create and access unique maps based on their interests while staying on one platform. Communities can create, manage, and share maps made by them and built for them. Now, street food seekers can easily find their eats without seeing information about secret antique collections (unless they want to of course :).

Our pivot and relaunch were successful. Users love the updated platform. But now we're facing an expected challenge: how to engage community managers and contributors who can create, moderate, and attract users to their particular maps.

I'd love to hear any thoughts and suggestions about how to face this challenge and, of course, answer any questions you may have.

    -----------

We made a short video to explain the app a bit more. If you want to take a look :):

    Best Android browser?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:19 PM PDT

I'm searching for a browser with ad-block and dark mode. So far I'm using Mozilla with several add-ons(privacy badger, HTTPS everywhere, ublock origin, dark reader) but honestly not having an official dark mode is a huge let down for me.

So which one is the best in your opinion?

Where is the decent+simple note-taking app for Android that will automatically sync phone and desktop (Mac or Windows)?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 09:19 AM PDT

Feel like it's kind of ridiculous there isn't a front-runner for auto-syncing notes, but I can understand Apple can get away with this based on the proprietary technology.

Anyone using any Notes apps for Android that can sync? I'm not looking for a paid app (ie. Evernote).

I have Spotify Premium and I'm looking for an alternate app because it always freezes and doesn't respond. I have to keep resetting and reloading it two or three times to finally get it to load.

    Car Maintenance Log App

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 05:46 PM PDT

I'm looking for an app to track vehicle maintenance and allow you to attach either a picture or PDF of the receipt. I'm not concerned with tracking fuel useage, really only want to be able to keep track of repairs and services.

I'm fine with a pay app if I have to get one.

Any real use case of Google Assistant?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 08:37 AM PDT

So I had Google Assistant turned off on my phone until yesterday, and I decided to give it a try. After spending some time looking at what it can do, I don't see any real use it it other than «remind me about something tomorrow», because most of the time if you need to set a reminder, you don't have time to open your reminders app and manually input date, time and title, it's just much easier to use Assistant for that.

Other than that? I can launch an app in two taps faster than ask Google to launch it for me, and most of the time you can be in some noisy place or transport and can't speak aloud. So launching apps mostly is useless.

Asking about weather is good too, but most of people have weather apps or widgets, so this feature is half useful.

You can do quick web search, but most of the time it's better to use browser and search manually, because there will be more results this way.

What can it do that I can't do manually faster and better, other than set reminders?

Is there a way to tell what apps on my phone are phoning home?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 01:05 PM PDT

I know NetGuard can tell you but I'm running Blokada to block ads and I cant run both at the same time. There is a block trackers option on Blokada but I'm not sure if it works or not.

Can someone suggest me some apps which can block ads in apps?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:15 PM PDT

I have tried a numerous amount of adblockers. And I have paid for it too. I just want a free way to block ads in games and other apps cause they are way too disturbing.
