    Simple Questions - October 31, 2019

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Should I buy a Ryzen 5 3600?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:56 AM PDT

Pc gaming newbie here looking to improve a pc that I now mostly use for casual and less demanding games.

Currently I have an AMD A 9700 with a Radeon R7 Integrated Graphics + 8gb of ram, from wich I read on this sub is quite a poor build. Considering my $200-ish budget, does it make any sense buying a Ryzen 5 3600 without upgrading my graphics card? Also feel free to suggest better alternatives if you will.

    1440p 144hz pc build Ryzen 7 3700x + RTX 2070 super

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:42 AM PDT

Hi everyone! this is my first pc build coming from a 6 years old laptop. It was a struggle to even play league of legends while having 1 open chrome tab and yeah thats the only game i can run (barely). I went for a white theme and here are the parts :

    CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

Graphics Card: GeForce® RTX 2070 SUPER™ GAMING OC WHITE 8G

    Motherboard: ASUS PRIME X570-PRO

    Ram: 16GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600 DIMM CL16 Dual Kit

Storage: 1TB WD Blue M.2 2280 SATA (Nvme double the price and i have an extra m.2 slot in case i upgrade)

PSU: Corsair RM750X White 750W Gold+ (came with white cables already)

Case: NZXT H510 ELITE WHITE (4 fans included)

    Cost (Germany) : 1600 euro

The pc build was easy but requires patience to find where to plug the aio and psu cables. I almost had a heart attack cuz I plugged my graphic card without unlocking the pcie slot and it got stuck but somehow i manged to fix it without any damage to it or the motherboard. Other than that everything else went smooth even the wraith prism was not difficult to install just dont worry about the pressure.

Performance wise i didnt test a lot of games but for now i can run apex and bo3 on max maxing out 165fps (165hz monitor) so im very happy with that coming from a ps4 30 fps.

The only issue i have is these rgb apps, my god how buggy they are from rgb fusion to aura.. Cam seems to be the most stable for me.

I hope this inspires people who are scared to build their own pc, its not difficult its cheaper and most importantly you can customize it to your liking.

Want to upgrade on Black Friday/Cyber Monday in anticipation for Cyber Punk 2077 but not certain where to start...

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:52 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming. Specifically I want to play Cyber Punk 2077 at as pretty as possible at as many frames as possible on a 200 hz, 1080p monitor.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'd really like to hit 140 hz on my 1080p monitor. I realize playing at the prettiest is unlikely, but I'd like to stay mid range or above.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I'd like to stay around $600.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?*

    US

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I already have a system running an: i5-8400 GTX1070 and 16 gigs of ram

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I fear I'm close to a CPU bottleneck already, but I was really hoping to just upgrade the GPU.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

Longtime console gamer looking to finally make that next step. Where do I even begin?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:25 PM PDT

I've looked at posts on here to try and help myself/get up to speed and all I see is gibberish. Can anyone help me on where to begin with this? Is it even worth it if I don't know anything about computer parts or how to build? I've been considering buying a pre built one, but I see nothing but bad things said about doing that and I feel like I'd be doing myself an injustice.. Thanks in advance

    Forced to make Windows account?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:45 AM PDT

Just built a new computer yesterday. Was forced to make a windows account rather than just creating a local account for Windows 10 home. Is there a way to bypass this? Afterwards I was able to go to Settings and create a local profile but it still allows sign in by the PIN I was forced to create earlier. Any way to delete this?

Help a guy surprise his girlfriend

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:25 PM PDT

Hi guys! My gf will soon start one year course for graphic and print design. She has some shitty laptop so i thought it would be a good idea to buy her new pc. She will use photoshop, illustrator and indesign. From my research i learned that GPU is not important for that software and it's much more important to find a good monitor, but she still needs fast PC. I tried building and this is what i came up with:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $194.79 @ OutletPC
CPU Cooler AMD Wraith Max 55.78 CFM CPU Cooler $37.40 @ OutletPC
    Motherboard ASRock AB350M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $84.97 @ Amazon
    Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $64.98 @ Amazon
    Storage Crucial MX500 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $44.89 @ OutletPC
Video Card MSI GeForce GT 710 2 GB Video Card $53.00 @ Amazon
Case Thermaltake Versa H15 MicroATX Mid Tower Case $24.99 @ Newegg
Power Supply EVGA 500 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply $44.89 @ OutletPC
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total (before mail-in rebates) $574.91
    Mail-in rebates -$25.00
    Total $549.91

Is this any good? Should i maybe go with AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with integrated GPU and spend more money on something else? But i really can't go over 600$, that's my budget. Also i get this warning with every motherboard i picked: Some AMD B350 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

Some help to see if this Cragislist deal is sketchy

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:02 PM PDT

I have entry level knowledge and an entry level budget when it comes to a gaming. I figured I'd check Craigslist to see what I found and this came up (https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/sys/d/chicago-gaming-desktop-upgraded-ram/7006462490.html). Any advice on this?

    Is this a good build?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:41 PM PDT

Thinking of getting a 5700 XT, but my CPU is a 4700K and the most OC I can get is 4.1

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:32 PM PDT

How much of an issue will this CPU be for bottlenecking the GPU. If it is too much I will just give in a build a 3600 build. But I want to spend that money on a 32" 1440 144 monitor.

What are some good benchmarking programs/ utilities /apps for benchmarking new build? And for keeping an eye on health?

I'm at a loss for Word...

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 02:48 PM PDT

I bought my new PC 2 months ago. Ryzen 5 3600, Aorus X570 Élite, 2x8gb 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO, RTX 2070 SUPER... Last week, I started having microstutters in R6S and Ghost Recon Wildlands. I checked for frametime: they were pretty constant, fluctuating between 15.5ms and 17ms. Then, I tried other Games: CSGO had no issues, Dark Souls 2 had no issues, Batman Arkham Asylum had no issues. Out of desperation, I ran 3DMark Time Spy, because I remembered I had run it when everything was doing ok. So I go through the test and... I HAVE A BETTER SCORE. 9377 instead of 9297! And every other subscore is also better than before. So then, does that mean my PC is fine (I hope) and Ubisoft is just lazy/doing bad updates?

RTX 2060 SUPER Power Connection Question

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:39 AM PDT

Built a new computer for the first time in awhile last night. When connecting the 6x2 power connector to the 8 pin on the graphics card the motherboard was giving a graphics card not detected led but the lights were on and fans spinning. I then connected another pcie power cable to the 6 pin and it posted correctly (so both 8 pin and 6 pin were plugged into PSU). My understanding is the 8 pin connection should be sufficient to power the card without the supplementary 6 pin. Should I have any cause for concerns that there is an issue with the GPU?

Added a fan w/splitter, now my system is in 100% hurricane mode 24/7

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:28 AM PDT

I have had two Corsair LL120 fans in my system and just added a third as an exhaust. Previously I had one in the CHA_FAN header and one on AIO_PUMP, not ideal I know but it seemed to work OK. These are the only headers on my ASUS b350-i ITX mobo aside from CPU_FAN, so I added this 3-way splitter to connect them all to CHA_FAN. Everything spins, but it's extremely loud -- I'm pretty sure everything is running at 100% speed all the time, ignoring the curve I set up in BIOS. I saw that only one end of the splitter has the extra wire to report speed back to the mobo, but I don't see any options in BIOS that relate to that. Any advice?

Tips for having a quieter PC?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 02:09 PM PDT

My gaming PC is noisy even on idle, it gets annoying to be in the room and constantly hear it so I have decided to invest in more efficient and silent components such as power supply, cpu fan and case fans.

    I found these:

    - 2x Noctua 1500RPM 120mm case fans

    - Master Hyper 212 Black Edition CPU Cooler

    - Be Quiet! Pure Power 11 500W 80+ Gold PSU

Is there anything else I should add? I know hard drives sometimes make noise too but I need large storage devices so I can't cut corners there. I was hoping with these components, I would barely be able to hear my PC.

    Gpu Upgrade

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:03 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I am looking to upgrade my gpu. I have not really been keeping up with the newer graphics cards as of late.

My setup rn is a Ryzen 5 2600, 16gb ram, and a Rx 570. My budget is around $400. I've seen the 5700 and 5700xt at this price point, but I don't really know the value or if it is worth it. Thanks.

Vega 56 to 5700xt upgrade question

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:35 PM PDT

I've seen a couple posts talking about upgrading gpu's and having to uninstall drivers/ do a couple of extra steps before plugging in a new gpu. Is this a necessary step when upgrading from one AMD gpu to another? All the others posts were from AMD to Nvidia or vice versa. Thanks!

    Need some build advice

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:39 PM PDT

So I am rebuilding my computer to be able to achieve higher frame rates and higher graphics setting in new AAA games in 1440p 100hz. My original PC build is linked here Current Build the only things I am planning on changing on this build are the motherboard, GPU, RAM, PSU, and CPU. Here are some parts I picked out today and feel pretty good about. New Parts However, I was definitely wanting more opinions on the matter. The other issue is the graphics card, I'm very very out of the GPU market so I'm not really sure what to pair with my build and I'm not really sure what will give me the performance I'm after.
