    Format a Windows partition

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 12:05 PM PDT

I have a "work" partition, inside this partition I made a small 20 gb partition to try Linux once again (really liked it this time). Now I want to turn my Work partition into my Linux partition, do I need to format the whole partition(including the Linux partition within it)?

Noob here, will Windows update break my Linux installation?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 10:45 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

As said above, I have Windows installed and configured to boot via UEFI, and Kubuntu configured to boot via Legacy. GRUB therefore is not needed. Whenever I need to change I just boot into BIOS and change the boot method. My question is, since I don't use GRUB, will Windows updating have an effect on my current dual-boot method? Or will the Windows update delete my entire partition? I'm running Kubuntu 19.10 and the latest Windows version.

P.S. Will a Windows update leave me unable to boot into Windows itself having broken Linux?

is "pacman -Qdt" reliable for finding orphans?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 04:49 AM PDT

    Basically title. The command

    pacman -Qdt

is supposed to give you orphans that can safely be deleted. I, a paranoid Linux noob, want to make sure that I can actually delete these packages without nuking my OS.

And aside from whether the command itself is reliable, I was wondering if there's a good (and easy) way of checking whether a package is essential or not. (Sure, I can just DDG every package name, but that doesn't always produce clear results.)

I'm running Manjaro by the way, but I guess that shouldn't matter much for the question at hand.

    Thanks!

    Adjusting button areas on Touchpad?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 12:20 PM PDT

I have a laptop with a touchpad, running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. But I'm not satisfied with the layout of the "buttons" on the trackpad. Specifically, the middle click is too large. I'm wondering if there's a way I can change that? No such option exists in the standard mouse settings.

    Thanks!

Upgraded GPU do I have to change Drivers or PPA?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 08:31 AM PDT

    Hey All,

Incoming Stupid Question - I recently upgraded my old 980ti to a 1080ti. So do I have to update my PPA or graphics drivers at all?

My 1080ti isnt giving me the performance boost I wanted, so I wasnt sure if my driver is out of whack with the new GPU or what the deal is. I have swapped around from Nvidia Driver 430-440 to see a difference, but nothing so far. When I upgrade to 440.26 Steam wont even start so I have to stay at 435.21.

    Thanks!

Intermediate video codec converter in Linux

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:53 PM PDT

I use FFMpeg. It is amazing. Fast. But it is extremely sensitive to errors. And if you stick to same type of transcoding then creating a bash script and follow it to same location. But it's a pain in the bottom to change to different paths, or transcode different things.

So, GUI would be awesome for the sake of simplicity.

Is there anything other than FFMpeg to transcode to DNXHR? Or something that use FFMpeg with a GUI? For Linux? Thanks.

He said that part of learning new systems is learning how to search for information so I was wondering if anyone knew some good sites? I'm more of a do the example and then read why type of learner so I'm kind of freaking out a little right now lol. Any help is much appreciated!

I'm looking for one with the ability to: - Add Bookmark's with a note attached - Remember last position - Search & sort by name, author, type - If i have an audiobook splitted into various .mp3's files, import them as 1 audiobook (or some other way that it can recognize that those files are the same audiobook) - hotkey capabilities - Ability to organize books by folder/categories - Increase/decrease audio velocity - Android app (syncronization would be a plus)

    Blinking cursor when using crontab

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:38 AM PDT

So, first of all, I'm a real noob. I mean a real noob that just started using Linux a few days ago out of necessity.

So I modified a basic script that plays videos in a loop. Standalone, it works perfectly but when I try it in a crontab, it does 'something' but doesn't play the videos. Basically the cursor starts blinking and when I click the desktop, the icons start blinking.

I have a feeling it wants to play the files but something is going wrong.

    # get rid of the cursor #setterm -cursor off # set here the path to the directory containing your videos VideoLocation="/home/pi/Desktop/Onthaal/Playfolder" # you can probably leave this alone Process="omxplayer" # our loop while true; do if ps ax | grep -v grep | grep $Process > /dev/null then sleep 1; else for entry in $VideoLocation/* do clear # -r for stretched over the entire location xterm -fullscreen -fg white -bg black -e omxplayer_silent -o hdmi -r "$entry" xrefresh -display :0 # omxplayer -r $entry > /dev/null done fi

Does cron need extra permissions or something? It happens in both crontab for the user and /etc/crontab. The script itself can be run by anyone (testing purposes).

Computer not passing POST after using efibootmgr - bios setup crash

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 07:03 AM PDT

    Hi!

I've got a pretty serious issue after setting an EFISTUB system (I don't like Grub tbh). Linux was installed and I was finisshing the missing boot.

    Last command was # efibootmgr -c -d /dev/nvme0n1p1 -p 1 -L "ArchLinux" -l \vmlinuz-linux-lts -u "root=/dev/nvme0n1p5 rw initrd=/initramfs-linux-lts.img"

cmd returned a list of boot options with the new one appended.

On reboot I've pressed F11 and I did see the boot option directly from EFI. When pressing Enter, the menu immediately reopened (issue). However the last option (Bios Setup) was written in chinese instead of latin. I opened bios-setup to reset lang but in crashed while the UI had display issues - everything was set on chinese!.

I do not understand the issue. please check the command.

Now the computer is bootlooping to blackscreen (no board error either).

I'll do a manual clearcmos to check. (soft clear was disabled unfortunately.) Full mobo poweroff and it passed Post again

EDIT : All boot files are mounted on /boot but it still refuses to boot on "ArchLinux" :/

EDIT2 : /boot/EFI has Boot Microsoft but no "ArchLinux" folder, so I think the issue is here.

    [Hardware Recommendation] £1.5k Laptop

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 06:59 AM PDT

Hey all, I'm looking to getting into buying a new laptop to replace my Macbook Pro. I use unix a fair bit at work, and not really into the direction the mac is going so was looking at getting a new laptop and intalling linux on it.

    Need:

    • Quadcore CPU
    • 16GB Ram
    • 512 SSD
    • Simple clean build
    • Nice screen (as long as it doesn't cause scaling issues
    • Good battery and portable (2kg for 15", 1.5kg for 13")

Currently been eyeing up the Dell XPS 13 developer edition which covers all those need, but wanted to ask if anyone had a recommendation as I've really not kept up to date anything non mac.

    Podcast apps

    Posted: 29 Oct 2019 05:11 AM PDT

    Hello!

So I have a unique use case here and I don't mind a little scripting or programming to get this working, but need a better idea of what apps I can use that are extensible enough to pull this off.

I use pocket casts on my phone as it allows me to auto download my favourite podcasts and of those select ones I wish to automatically add to a play now play list. In addition it store this against my account.

I also want to create a script that essentially does the same in Ubuntu and marks the progress of each item in the playlist and syncs it with pocket casts.

So whether I'm at my pc or on my phone I have the same podcast experience.

I realise there is an unofficial Pocket Casts api but I'm unsure if it's dead as it was last updated 3 years ago.

    Any advice much appreciated.

    P. S. I ultimately hope to build this as a notification into polybar as well using a unique sound notification to let me know a new podcast is available.
