Linux My first day with Linux (Pop OS)

My first day with Linux (Pop OS)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:20 AM PDT

So today was the first day I tried out Linux. I was amazed with how elegant everything was and super excited. Installed a lot of applications from the pop shop with ease! PC boots up super fast now. So I installed Blender and the rendering times were amazing, fueling my excitement. Downloaded Steam to download Dota. Whilst I was downloading DotA I was browsing low poly blender models on sites, opening them and having a blast. Round about the time I was 90%+ done downloading DotA, I downloaded this low poly blend file (https://free3d.com/3d-model/house-in-the-beach-659371.html) from the same site I was on this whole time, extracted it, and that's where the shit hit the fan.

Suddenly I was getting error messages saying that I don't have enough space (I have a 250GB SSD which has 200GB available prior to the shit). I used the disk usage analyzer to isolate the problem that this blend file I downloaded was using up 200GB space in my cache. So I deleted it, but steam now wanted to download dota back from 0%, but I could see that 20GB worth of files were lying in the downloads directory (using the disk usage analyzer). Searched for solutions, didn't find any (let the "noob" comments commence :D). Tried to open the file directory but it's hidden or something, so I decided I'm just gonna download everything from scratch.

NOW...my question is, are such tedious little problems a common occurrence? Because I'm already being set into walking on egg shells mode on day 1 just from extracting an innocuous file. And this is only something that was obvious because it blew up to 200GB, what if a thousand of little shits add up to make a shitstorm?

Or am I just having beginners bad luck?

    How to properly remove Ubuntu?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:19 AM PDT

I wanted to install kde plasma on my freshly dual booted Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (along side windows 10) but the process was taking too long so I changed my mind and decided to stop it and remove whatever it had just installed... So I changed the previous command - sudo tasksel install kubuntu-desktop to $ sudo tasksel remove kubuntu-desktop and ran it... While this was running I noticed the icons in my dock disappearing.... within a few seconds the semicolon in the time was gone.It was removing everything (endgame irl??!)!!!! I panicked and closed my terminal to end the task, I tried to reopen the terminal but the shortcut won't work, I couldn't even find terminal in the application search!!... many other applications were gone... Firefox for example was gone... Not knowing what to do I logged out... I couldn't log back in ... It wouldn't let me enter my password... I forced my laptop to shutdown and booted in windows. Now I decided to remove Ubuntu entirely and reinstall it... I followed these instructions: https://itsfoss.com/uninstall-ubuntu-linux-windows-dual-boot/.

But now when I open uefi I still see ubuntu:

There are still traces of ubuntu...

This scares me. Shouldn't all traces of ubuntu be gone? Is is safe to reinstall ubuntu?Do i need to take more steps?

Question about using Linux in a bootable usb

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:50 PM PDT

Hi guys. I'm pretty new to Linux. I've only used Ubuntu in college computers. Today I decided to install Ubuntu to my laptop with the method of bootable usb.

If I understand this correctly, each time I boot up my PC and have the usb plugged, I can choose to run Ubuntu instead of windows. My questions are: 1. when I'm in Ubuntu mode, and save a file like a pdf, where is it saved? Is it saved in my usb or in my computer's hard drive? 2. what happens when I turn off my pc? Is the file still there or it's lost when I turn it on again? 3. Can I save a file through Ubuntu and then access it through windows and vice versa?

    Thanks in advance!!

How much space is enough for root?

How to pin a certain script/binary to an icon in Unity or i3?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:43 AM PDT

I have a few commands which I repeatedly run:

    sudo systemctl hibernate

    sudo openvpn --config ...

    etc...

I find it a bit inconvenient to type openvpn command and keep that terminal open. Call me a noob but I want some kind of an icon in Unity/Gnome/i3 which I would just click and then click again to deactivate. Is there a way to do that? It also well may be a menu with bunch of my custom commands.

Thank you guys! The community is awesome!

How do I install the latest software on linux?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 02:05 AM PDT

Alright this question can be asked in two different ways, so first I'll give you my personal scenario:

I'm trying to install the latest version of Node.js and npm,. First I ran sudo apt install nodejs, expecting to get npm alongside of Node as I do on windows. Well it says "command 'npm' not found, but can be installed with sudo apt install npm". So I did that. And now npm -v says 3.4 when I'm expecting 5.x, it's a super old version that I got. How do I ensure that I get the latest npm version? I'm on Linux Mint 19.2.

And then the same question a bit more generally; when installing new software, how do I ensure I get the latest version? Every now and then a tutorial tells me "oh just add this repository to your apt and you'll get the latest version", but how am I supposed to know this for every software I install?

Help please. I am trying to move an existing Linux install to an SSD that has Win10 on it already, want to dual boot.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 07:37 AM PDT

Let me start by explaining my situation. I have an SSD with win10 and a HD with Linux mint 19.2 cinnamon. I have partitioned the HD so that the file system and home folder are separate. I want to leave the home folder where it is and move the Linux filesystem to a freshly created partition on my SSD, alongside win 10. I don't have a way to do a fresh install alongside windows so am purely looking to move the filesystem and then configure it to dual boot.

The first thing I did was to copy and paste the filesystem over using gParted.

Following Google's advice, I deleted proc sys and dev(?) in the new install.

I edited the fstab and updated it with the new UUIDs.

I believe I also edited the grub, but I'm not at my computer right now so I cannot check that. When I restart the computer I have to choose between Linux install on sda5 as well as my old install on sdb6, and win10 on sda1. Looks good I think but whichever Linux I select it seems to connect to the old filesystem, checked with df command. Additionally I have lost the gui, I have to logon via the command line. Clearly I have messed something up, so I need help to either fix it, or if someone could walk me through the correct process I can go back and start afresh.

Thanks, and sorry about the mobile formatting and back typing.

    Piping Definition Help.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:21 PM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if someone could help me with the definition of Piping. I know what Piping does but I find the definition of Piping really confusing. This is a definition from Linux bible book: "The pipe (|) metacharacter connects the output from one command to the input of another command." This definition is used everywhere to describing Piping and it confuses me every-time.

What does it mean by "input of another command"?

The first part is output so I get that part but the second part confuses me:

    e.g. dmesg | less

Aren't they both outputting? dmesg command will out put everything on screen at once and piping it to less will output it in pages. Where does the "input of another command" come from? because both the command has been output.

    Regards

nvm warning on terminal start up

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:29 AM PDT

nvm is not compatible with the npm config "prefix" option: currently set to "" Run `npm config delete prefix` or `nvm use --delete-prefix v11.0.0 --silent` to unset it.

appears in my terminal above everything else on terminal start up

    >npm config delete prefix >

    does nothing

    >nvm use --delete-prefix v11.0.0 --silent segmentation fault (core dumped)

    versions:

    >nvm --version 0.35.0 >npm -v 6.12.0 >node -v v12.13.0

trying to use v11.0.0 on npm for a coding project

any thought/suggestions greatly appreciated, let me know if you need any more information

Just to be clear this is how dual boot right?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:59 PM PDT

    *I dual boot^

So I have an ssd, I'm going to put in my laptop, then I download ubuntu (presumably installers) then I install ubuntu to my ssd, then I turn off safe and fast boot, launch to bios, choose the ssd, and then it should work. There is no need to partition because I'm dual booting right?

Manjaro/Win10 Dual boot will no longer boot windows

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:31 PM PDT

Awhile ago I dualbooted Manjaro with Windows 10. Since then Manjaro has been my daily driver with me only occasionally going to windows 10 if a program wont play nicely with linux. Today I tried to boot into windows to test a network issue and discovered that windows is refusing to boot.

When I select Win10 with grub loader it will boot into a black screen with a single blinking underscore in the top corner and seems to just get stuck there. Any ideas what the issue is or how to fix it? (Manjaro is still working perfectly fine)

    Fedora 31 gaming help

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:12 AM PDT

This week i've bought The outer worlds just to play on linux, i've been distro hopping to see if i can get as close as can get on performance on windows (I watched a video of a guy playing on linux and getting the same fps as me on windows, with a ryzen 3), and i always wanted to try fedora on a long run but fedora 30 locked my system way too much for me, but i gave a shot for 31, and it's fantastic, but only on fedora 31( previous i was on manjaro and ubuntu 19.10) the outer words just crashes, out of nowhere, and randomly, and i've wonder if was some dependency or anything i forgot to install.

The game was installed with Epic Games Store prefix on lutris.net, not messed with anything on both other distros, manjaro and fedora had wine stagging installed so i basically dont install anything related. Any tips are welcomed.

    System:

    Ryzen 5 1600 not OC

    8GB 2666mhz single channel

GTX 1060 3GB evga ( Nvidia drivers 435.21 installed via rpm fusion guide)

    Fedora 31

No sound on Linux Mint 19.2 after messing with Cadence settings

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 07:29 AM PDT

So, I was trying to set up JACK routing for Protrekkr to work when this problem appeared. A temporary solution is to run "pulseaudio" in the command line, but then sound works for everything except Firefox. I tried to Timeshift the system back 4 days prior, but to no avail.

If anyone has ever run into a problem like that, please help me!

P.S. If needed, I may post my syslog later.

EDIT: Nevermind all this, I did rm -r ~/.config/pulse/* and rm -r ~/.pulse/* and the sound is now back again!

Slow wifi on Intel AC 8265--Ubuntu 19.10

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:23 AM PDT

Wifi is slow on Ubuntu. The wifi itself works fine when I tethered it with my phone through USB. I've tried to disable 801n and turned off the power limitations on the chip all with no success. It's driving me crazy because I've been tinkering with Linux on this laptop for weeks now with various distros just to be greeted with many small problems. This by far is the least problematic so I hope to get it fixed.

    My laptop is Asus X412DA.

    Ryzen 5 3500U - Vega 8
    8GB RAM
    240GB SSD
    Intel AC 8265 Wireless card

Ubuntu 19.10. Kernel 5.3.8 (the newest mainline)

Ubuntu XFCE not using entire partition.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 04:56 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/CNvRlgk

My Ubuntu VPS (with XFCE installed) is not using the entirety of my 40GB drive. Disk manager shows that the partition is 40GB, however disk usage analyzer only shows 20GB available. The VPS has been rebooted, however it still only shows the 20GB. Any idea why?

Is this an issue with the host or is it something to do with Ubuntu?

    Edit:

    head -c 35G </dev/urandom >new-file creates a 5.5GB file (equal to the amount of space left -1.1GB)

    lslbk returns:

    NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT loop0 7:0 0 89.1M 1 loop /snap/core/7917 loop1 7:1 0 89.5M 1 loop /snap/core/6130 loop2 7:2 0 86.9M 1 loop /snap/core/4917 sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom sr1 11:1 1 350K 0 rom /mnt/srip vda 252:0 0 40G 0 disk ├─vda1 252:1 0 1M 0 part ├─vda2 252:2 0 300M 0 part /boot └─vda3 252:3 0 39.7G 0 part /

    Edit2:

It seems the issue was really simple, I had just forgot to run resize2fs /dev/drive_to_grow

    Thanks for the help guys.

Display Issue Installing Ubuntu 16.04 on VirtualBox VM

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:52 PM PDT

Total noob question I hope this is not against the rules. I am installing Ubuntu 16.04 on a VM using VirtualBox. First - I've got a 4K monitor and everything is really tiny. Switching to Full or Scaled mode doesn't help. But whatever. Decided not to worry about it for now. However, during the installation I cannot get past the "Where are you?" screen. As you can see, the button to move forward (I presume the Next button) is not even visible, and I have no idea what the button I can partially see is - clicking on it does nothing. I've tried moving the window to a different monitor (not 4K) - it doesn't help. I've also tried using the Tab key + Enter - that's not working. How do I fix this?

EDIT: Ended up getting this to work by turning on the screen reader (blue button at the top) and Tabbing through rest of the installation wizard. Once installed, issue resolved itself.

Buttons are cut off... Why? How?

Dual Boot - Windows 10 Disconnect and Reconnect Sound

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 04:52 PM PDT

Not sure if this should be posted in a Windows subreddit but I think it's related to my dual-boot setup so...

I have a dual-boot uefi setup with Windows 10 on one nvme ssd and Fedora 31 on different nvme ssd. It defaults to the grub bootloader. It's all working fine, but whenever I restart from Fedora 31 and load Windows from grub, I can hear the device disconnect and reconnect sound. I have nothing connected to laptop. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to "fix" this? This only happens when I boot to Windows after restarting from Fedora. Doesn't happen when I cold boot straight to Windows from grub.
