XPS 15 vs Thinkpad X1 Extreme vs MSI Prestige 15 Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:28 AM PDT Trying to decide between these three comparably equipped laptops : the Xps has thermal limitations, the thinkpad has an uglier bezelled screen and looks more business-y, and I am just not sure about the durability of MSI laptops (otherwise I'd choose the Prestige)... Are there other benefits/cons to these laptops? [link] [comments]
Acer Aspire 7 - One year of ownership Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:51 PM PDT A717-72G-700J This is for people considering purchasing this machine. Please feel free to ask any questions about the laptop and I will answer the best I can. Hope this helps someone. This is likely to be a huge want item this year, as it is now coming in around $700 and is a VR-ready gaming laptop with a decent display, so I'll give my thoughts after owning one for a year. Shortly, why you should care what I think at all: I am a software developer and have been building PC's since the 80's. I have worked in various IT and technical roles for 20 years. I purchased my Acer Aspire 7 from NewEgg around this time last year. The laptop is still running just fine. I added a 1TB SSD at the time of purchase. I have almost always had the laptop sitting on a cooling board. If you are reading this entire thing, then you are considering buying this laptop and will want to read all of the following, so I'm not going to break it up by mood. VR-ready power. 16GB DDR4 is no joke. Runs every game I have ever tried (even brand new ones) entirely without lag. Almost nothing slows this down. It is a BEAST of a machine. It does everything I could possibly want, including software development to high power gaming. I use this laptop regularly with a Samsung HMD Odyssey+. It is phenomenal as a VR machine because, while your friend may have some really cool VR setup at home, it is at his house and always will be. With the Ody+ and Aspire 7, I can bring VR anywhere in a backpack and no joke, have it set up and people actively playing in 5-10 minutes. It's awesome for parties or just hanging out and I've brought it to work a few times. So great. Instant, portable VR. People change their minds about VR REALLY fast after playing on this rig because it is simply awesome. The IPS display is GREAT. I actually bought a 42" 4K TV and never used it because this 17" IPS is all that I really need in my life. The laptop features a blue light filter that I always use and never notice unless it somehow turns off. Excellent. I use it in my small apartment and I can basically see the screen from anywhere. It is not a 4K display, which is a con, but I am not really dying for one personally. All the same heat and power levels of a desktop computer when running in high power mode, but it is crammed into 1/10th the area, so it gets HOT. The metal part of the case above the F5-F12 keys must be where the GPU or cooler are, because they get so hot, even with "cool boost" on and sitting on a cooling board, that touching the case there will actually burn you. No shit. The laptop keyboard itself is practically unusable when doing high power gaming because of the heat pouring out of it and lack of airflow in that area. This thing is basically a 1000 watt space heater and you cannot game with it on your lap. No way. I really really hate the Dolby audio mixer. On many settings (or without drivers), when there are multiple OS audio sources, it is like riding an ocean of volume levels as it fades up and down. Mostly I have managed to stop this with various settings, or by using the 'clearvoice' option, but the overall audio experience leaves a lot to be desired. The speakers are OK. This is probably not the only laptop that has this problem, but this is the only one that I currently own in this generation so I take this as an issue with this laptop. Back to the good for a moment, the power management is actually really good. When unplugged, you cannot use the GeForce card, but this is good because the backup is just fine for things you'd want to do in that configuration and it makes the battery go a long way. Fingerprint sensor drivers had huge problems for awhile. This was a problem caused by Windows/Microsoft rolling back the driver for seemingly no reason. I haven't even tried to set it up again since I had to reimage. Drivers are on the Acer site and the support isn't AT ALL documented, but the drivers exist. A few minor gripes: Why do hardware makers seem to think that the touchpad MUST be DIRECTLY below the spacebar? On this laptop the touchpad is huge, and if you are trying to use the actual-fire-and-brimstone keyboard, you will hit it all the time. I must note, that when there was a windows update, it corrupted my primary drive partition. I blame Microsoft for this problem, but I had to do a complete manual software restoration on this thing. I will also note, that it is possible that this could be related to a short in the left-side USB port, because that port does not well hold a USB connector. This may be due to stress that I have put on it unintentionally. You can read the specs in a few places, but know that since it is a "VR ready" laptop, it has a certain number of input ports. Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:12 PM PDT Hi, I'd like some advice. I have a Lenov E490 laptop. Two days ago I installed the new drivers. The notebook was probably triggered by a turbo boost, speeding up considerably in the location manager with a peak range of up to 4.21GHz (points out that it never did, NB is only originally installed, purchased from eshop, I haven't done update before). Something has probably been updated again (after 2 days since the first driver update) and the processor just did not exceed 2GHz and is happy that it does not go as a few "glorious" days. Today I try reinstall drivers, I change settings in the Setup (I turned off speed, power management, set maximum power), but just didn't exceed those 2GHz. I'm pretty disappointed to know how beautiful it was with the turbo boost. I pay with gold who could bring it to life again :-) [link] [comments]
I bought a new battery for my laptop... Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:12 PM PDT I bought a new battery for my laptop, I installed it and my computer turned on and charges. The only problem is it will stay to 47% I tried to calibrate it 3 times Everytime I got a fault ID. I tried it in the BIOS and manual. Do anyone have tips what I can try? When I calibrate by the BIOS it stays at 47% when I do it manually it will get around 80ish% [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 08:24 AM PDT Hi there! Looking to purchase a laptop. I have one currently that is a thick monster of a machine. I don't know what it is or any of the technical jargon related to it other than the fact that it's a Dell - I just know it's big, heavy and can't support the games I would like to play. I was looking at buying a new laptop that'll be able to support creation games such as Planet Zoo, Planet Coaster, The Sims, etc. I figure a gaming laptop is the way to go but I need some insight. I also write a ton and would like to store many hundreds of pictures on the laptop, so something fast and capable. I need something decent affordable (around $1K, more or less) that has (according to the specs listed to run these types of games) Intel i7 4770, minimum 12 GB RAM, Windows 7 or 10, and just the capability of running creation games smoothly. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:23 AM PDT ASUS ROG 15.6" Gaming Laptop (Intel Core i5-9300H/256GB SSD/8GB RAM/NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650/Win 10) Can this give me at least 60fps in AAA titles? Like Battlefield 1 Battlefield V Metro (Xbox Game Pass) GTA V If these specs can't give 60fps then what I need to update? Processor, ram or graphic card? [link] [comments]

Just got my Lenovo Legion Y740 | i7-9750H | RTX 2060 | 17 inch. How do I benchmark? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:41 AM PDT Hello everyone! My lenovo legion Y740 just arrived. This is my first gaming laptop. I need to know if everything works fine. I have the following questions could someone answer them. what are the benchmarks that I should run to check if the performance is comparable to other legion Y740s. How do I check for thermal throttling? And is undervolting necessary? [link] [comments]
I'm a simple man. All I need is Thunderbolt 3 PD AND dedicated graphics. Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:24 AM PDT Okay, but really. Does anybody know of a laptop with the following criteria?
SSD size doesn't matter. Doesn't even matter if there is no SSD. I'll swap it. If you can find something like this on Amazon or Ebay, just share it and let it confirm your awesomeness. [link] [comments]
Will gaming on my new non gaming laptop harm it in anyway? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:59 AM PDT Purchased a laptop a month ago, intel core i5 8th gen 8gigs of ram etc. but I'm sure it uses intel integrated graphics as it comes with no graphics card. Will it harm my laptop in anyway if I decide to play Skyrim on it (not legendary edition)? My old laptop gave it a while ago and a part of me thinks it's because I occasionally played games on it? So is it okay to game on my laptop or will I have to buy skyrim on my home console to play it? [link] [comments]
Needing a Pretty Beefy Laptop That is Easily Transportable Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:36 AM PDT I am going into college with a game design degree, and I also do a lot of video editing and occasional gaming (overwatch, some Minecraft modpacks, risk of rain 2, rocket league). I need something ideally that can get the most out of this monitor (a 1440p 100hz). Ideally under 5 lbs and a thunderbolt 3 port would be nice. I'm thinking either the eluktronics mag 15 with RTX 2070 i7-9750H 32gb ram or an MSI GS65 stealth with the same specs. Any advice? [link] [comments]

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:44 AM PDT Is there a big difference between the 2? Is it worth the upgrade. I spent $400 on a 3500u laptop but now there is a $330 2500u. Not sure if I should return it for $70. I also would like to play some fps shooters on my laptop like overwatch [link] [comments]

1000-1700 USD Laptops with Optical Drives? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:56 AM PDT I have a company-issued Gigabyte P57. It has everything I need for work functionality-wise apart from a few nitpicks I could live with. One thing I love with it is that you can take off the ODD without having to unscrew the laptop and replace it with something else. I have a personal SSD from my old broken laptop that I use on the ODD bay and boot it to do personal stuff, creating a very convenient division for me between personal and work. The company doesn't mind this, thankfully as they know my work/study life creep into each other. Unfortunately, due to some changes in the organisation, the company will be issuing me a new laptop of my choice and I will have to surrender the old one after the new one arrives. I've been weighing on a Legion or a G17 mainly because they have insurance and serviceability in Australia, but they don't seem to have ODDs. I'm hesitant with ASUS, MSI, or getting another Gigabyte simply because I can't agree with the warranty, aesthetics and the build as I move around a lot. Am I out of luck here and should I just consider an HDD enclosure, essentially sacrificing SATA performance when booting on the other drive? [link] [comments]

Helios 300 vs waiting for Black Friday Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:50 AM PDT Hi! I have been wondering this for a while, the Helios 300 has the specs that I want on a laptop, and it hovers around 1000 dollars (Intel i7, 16GB Ram, GTX 1060, though theres a newer model thats 1100$ that has GTX1660 Ti, I wonder how much better that is). I dont want to waste money and I'm not sure how good black fridays are when it comes to laptop deals. Any advice? [link] [comments]
