Speedtest.net just launched an official C++ CLI client Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:25 AM PDT (Full disclosure, I run Ookla's infrastructure teams so feel free to AMA about Speedtest.net in general as well) We just launched an official Speedtest.net CLI interface! This is a statically compiled C++ binary which uses the exact same engine as the mainline native clients. It's also compatible with x86/amd64 and also ARM32/64. It has the interactive output (above), but also has CSV/TSV and high frequency JSONL formats so you could even build your own gauge around it. You might ask, there's already open source versions out there, why does this matter - there's a main reason:
We literally just launched it and would love your feedback, I'll personally make sure anything you send me gets directly back to the team. More information about it is here: https://www.speedtest.net/insights/blog/introducing-speedtest-cli/ You can download it here: https://www.speedtest.net/apps/cli If you have any questions in general about Speedtest.net and our stack, I'm also happy to answer them. Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:05 PM PDT Hello, all. My father is in the final stages of building his forever home, and he wants me to build his network for him. He is a fairly tech savvy guy, but he hasn't been in the weeds of networking since the late 90s, so I'm doing this for him. The home being built is very long, L-shaped, 3800+ sq feet, single story, and every wall has sheet-rock. His priorities are a NAS accessible from every TV hardwired with CAT 6, VPN capability from his study, and OUTSTANDING wireless capability in every square inch of his home. He has suffered for the past 15 years with 2mbps up and down in his home, and does not want to suffer again. He has CSPIRE fiber coming into the house. He plans on using CAT 6 for both video and internet, so he has a drop in every room of the house for the TV's he's mounting on the wall. My proposed set-up:
My question is:
Thank you all in advance! [link] [comments] |
Fibre woes, bad upload after terminating cable Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:11 AM PDT Posted this over in /r/Network but I think it might have been better suited here. Mornin' all, I decided to move my homelab out to the garage a few weeks ago and so I buried a fibre optic cable that runs to the detached building. After getting too vigorous with the protective conduit, I managed to pull the LC connectors off the end. Alas, I was too far along in the process now to order another cable so I decided to finish the run. I ordered my fibre cleaver, cleaning solution and SC Quick Connectors (Couldn't get ahold of LC Quick Connectors, probably weak Google-Fu) and terminated the cable, many times. Eventually I got a link between my two Dell PowerConnect 5524s, UI was showing 10GB between the two, however a speed test revealed I had 200mb down (I can get around 380 in the house) and a 0.02mb up. I figured I'd messed up the terminations so I did them again, no change. I also swapped the fibre lines around at each end, clutching at straws but assuming it could be an issue with the TX side of the fibre from the garage, still no change. I've factory reset and upgraded both switches to the latest firmware this morning, just waiting for the last one to finish so I can test it again.Odd thing is, I can't access the UI of the garage switch from the house but I can ping and telnet to it perfectly fine. Bumped the ping packet size to 1024 and now I'm getting a ~30% packet loss. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what could be wrong? The swapping of TX/RX lines and still having the same issue has thrown me, I appreciate fibre is a complex beast, and I'd rather get someone to terminate it properly but I'm not sure I can hire a specialist to come to a garage in rural Lincolnshire, England. Update: After updating the firmware on both switches, I can get 354 Mbits/sec via iperf locally. However SpeedTest still shows next to no upload. Now I'm not really sure what's going on at all. For clarity my network topology is USG-PRO-4 -> N1148T (downstairs) --(10g fibre)--> PowerConnect 5524 (attic) --(10g fibre)--> PowerConnect 5524 (Garage homelab) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2019 07:14 PM PDT I live in Maryland and currently switched over to Verizon FiOS I'm loving the speeds that I'm getting but unfortunately my fiance's mom lives in rural PA. She has Verizon DSL service but even there her internet is so slow that she isn't even able to use simple things like fast forward, rewind or even pause on something like an Amazon fire stick. When she tries it pretty much stops the stream. Is there anything you guys can think of that can get her a better wi-fi signal that would allow her to stream normally? We have tried talking to her internet provider who was unable to provide any answers and stated that they would not run new lines. So we dropped them. Obviously with this kind of speeds or lack thereof I'm unable to get her what I really want which is a video calling system so that her and her daughter can be ambetter contact with one another. The fact that my fiance's mother lives alone doesn't help the situation and this would greatly battle the loneliness that she can sometimes feel. Please anyone help. [link] [comments] |
Advice needed for manual speed QoS Posted: 30 Oct 2019 06:13 PM PDT Hi. The last time I inquired for help from Reddit, I only received one response of a user suggesting I purchase a Linksys AC2400 Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router (E8400) . I ever regret listening to that suggestion, and wish someone else advised me since the the AC band is way too buggy. Problem: Many devices connected to our home network slow down the quality and use as much bandwidth as they are given. Security cameras only need 500-1000 Kbps each too run regularly, however, they will take more than they need, if they are given, which drains bandwidth from other devices. In the past we had a QoS TP-Link router that worked but burnt out. After that, we tried a Belkin, which the automatic and manual functions were not advanced enough and didn't quite do the job. What I want to do: Buy a router (new, pre-owned, or refurb'd), under $50 that is capable of gigabit speeds (AC 750Mbps+) that can limit every single device on the network, or limit a specific SSID. For example, IoT Devices/Smart Home devices should receive no more than 1Mbps each. Guest network devices should not receive more than 5 Mbps each. Personal Laptops/Tablets/etc should be prioritized. Long story short, I'm looking to buy a new router for all of my devices (security cameras, sensors, google homes, tvs, computers, tablets). Any suggestions under $50? I am happy to buy off ebay if in unused condition. Being able to control it from anywhere is a plus, but not necessary. [link] [comments] |

New Here - Travel Router for Captive Portal with Web based login. Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:06 PM PDT Hey there. New here and wondering if any kind soul can help me best tackle this conundrum. So, trying to find a Travel Router that will connect to a Public Hotspot Wifi with a captive portal webpage, that doesn't really have a username and password kind of Login. The fields it has are : Email, Country (that you can choose by pressing a flag button) and a checkbox for i accept conditions. I think this Wi-fi hotspot automatically drops connection after a while (Still testing if it's inactivity or scheduled time based timeout) , so i was wondering how to maybe renew login process automatically. Ultimate Goal is to Power router on, have it connect to public hotspot and then share its own connection with 2 devices for basic browsing, and netflix. Tested connection on speedtest.net with an iphone 6 and it was only 5, 6 Mbps. PS: if it's inactivity that drops connection, would normal router pinging it keep it up indefinitely? I'm looking to buy a travel router as i think there's probably no way to use my old Cisco E3000 for this right? Any help is greatly appreciated. Pardon the Noobness :/ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2019 04:41 PM PDT Hey all, Trying to play Modern Warfare on my Xbox One console, and I'm having an issue with "Double Nat Detected" on my consoles settings. I believe this may be the problem for this specific game. Other games work completely fine, just ones such as MW or other activation games. It does allow me to connect once in a blue moon, but 95% of the time it's connection failed. My apartment complex provides us WiFi, and the only access to it at all is through an access point by Ruckus in my apartment-mate's bedroom closet. This access point has Ethernet ports in the back and one is being occupied with a wire that runs through the wall which I assume is giving it internet access. I've tried using both the Ethernet port in my room in the wall, and connecting over Wifi. Both result in the double nat and connection failure to online services to MW. Is there anything I can do to the AP to fix this? [link] [comments] |
Can I use an Ethernet splitter with a powerline adapter ? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 04:14 PM PDT I have this powerline adapter and wanted to use it for both my PS4 and PC, there's only 1 ethernet port so I obviously can't use both simultaneously, I was wondering about getting something like a splitter or a switch to be able to use both at once without manually changing the cables. Will the splitter work or do I have to get a Switch ? And do they work off a powerline adapter ? Answers or general advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated, thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2019 04:07 PM PDT So I just moved into an apartment and am planning on getting the 175 Mbps plan and buying my own modem. I would prefer to do the self install as it's free, however, due to the specifics of my apartment, I'm not sure I'll be able to. When I moved in to my apartment, they let me know that if I wanted to set up Xfinity, I'd have to give the property manager a days notice, because in order to install it, they need access to the phone room. My question, if I can myself get access to the phone room, will I be able to install everything needed? Or will I need an actual tech sent out. I'm really not trying to spend $89 if I can do it myself. I have an IT background as well so not like I'm completely unfamiliar with this kind of stuff. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:53 AM PDT Hello All, I purchased a foreclosure a couple of months ago, it's a 1750sqft 2 story cape(28x36 foot print). It is mostly open on the first floor. The second floor has a bathroom and hallway at the top of the stairs, with a large master to the left and two small bedrooms to the right. We had to open one wall from the basement to the attic, so I was able to run 10 cat5e cables. I had the intention of using one or two for APs and the rest for IP cameras. Every room is also wired with coax. Spectrum is coming this weekend, so I am unsure what I will have for a cable modem. With that information, what is my most cost effective method of whole house wifi? I was looking at the tp-link APs on amazon, but I am unsure if I will need a router to along with with them. Any help is appreciated. Thank You [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2019 09:19 AM PDT It seems like my wireless routers tend to work fine for a year or two, and then get - for lack of a better term - flaky. I currently have a TP-Link Archer C7. Just yesterday, I started losing my wireless connections with the router every few hours. Once I restart the router, it goes back to normal (for a few hours at least). In the past, I've had routers that stop giving out IP addresses. What is an expected lifetime for a wireless router? Are there some brands that are better than others in the consumer category? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:36 PM PDT Hello. My parents are going to be living in a small RV for a few months while their house has some storm damage repaired. They're plugging into my house for water/power, but I need to get something for the RV so they can get a WiFi signal. It's about 125' from my front door to the RV. They can sometimes see my WiFi on their phones but the network comes and goes on the network list. Is there something I can plug in Inside the travel trailer so they can watch Netflix and all that? My dad needs internet for work as well. Thank you in advance for your assistance. [link] [comments] |
Old router as an access point? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:30 PM PDT I currently use an Asus RT-AC3100 and it's not in the greatest location in my house(basement corner). I have an old Asus RT-N66U lying around. I'm wondering if it's worth setting up the old router as an access point. My concern is that it doesn't support the 802.11 AC protocol, only 802.11 N and earlier. assuming I get a stronger signal from it in other rooms of my house, will I see slower speeds because it doesn't support the AC protocol? Also worth noting that the older router does not support the Asus Mesh mode and is connected with a long cat 6 cable. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:49 PM PDT okay, I actually need help peeps. long story short (too late): bought new TP-link C9 router. so much faster, BUT the 5Gz kept dropping all connections randomly, a few times a day (that i noticed). 2.4Ghz worked just fine 24/7 (streaming on tv never interrupted, and when connected to 2.4, perfect connection for PC, but slow)... which to me means the issue is in the router. fine, returned router and bought ASUS RT-ACRH17. SAME ISSUE! checked the logs and i get these things when the 5Ghz is dropped (again, 2.4Ghz is perfect 24/7). Ethernet cables cat 7 vs cat 8 question Posted: 30 Oct 2019 09:12 AM PDT So I recently got fiber internet installed 1gb up and down and I never thought about changing my Ethernet cables till now lol. I was doing some research about them and didn't even notice there was different kinds with cat 5 6 7 8. Anyone know much about this and what cables to go with. I have a hardwire to my Xbox and the other to Google WiFi amazon has some pretty cheap 10 feet ones so price isn't an issue for me. Should I just go with the cat7 or is cat8 some new tech. ISP's Router vs. Private Router Posted: 30 Oct 2019 09:11 AM PDT I run an Enterprise class corporate network in my day job. I try to apply the same principles in securing my work networks at home as well. Obviously I don't have millions of dollars to spend on networking equipment at home, but I have the same basic concepts, (Firewall, Network Zones, etc.) Frequently my friends and family ask me about their networks at home and the first thing I ask them is do they have their own router or are they only using the router provided by their ISP? 9 times out of 10, they are just using their ISP's equipment. To me this is a huge problem. Your ISP's network is an untrusted network. Anytime you have an untrusted network connecting to your trusted network you should route all traffic through a Firewall that is controlled by the the trusted network. Your ISP's router is a big unknown. You don't control it, you don't own it. You should not trust it. Now ISP's are also providing "Free Wi-Fi" with their routers. This means that you're moving many of your devices even further away from your trusted network. I mean sure, Wi-Fi devices should maybe be in a DMZ anyway, but a DMZ brokered by your network. Furthermore, a lot of ISP's will create a Mesh Wi-Fi solution with the Wi-Fi in the Router they provide you to enable better coverage for your neighbors who share that same ISP. The standard argument is that networking is complicated and expensive. Well that may have been true a few years ago, but many home networking solutions are actually so simple to operate that your grandmother can set them up in a few minutes just by following some very clear setup instructions. They are also at a wide range of price points making them very affordable. So what are your thoughts? Should we be using the devices that are being provided by our ISP's or should we be trying to secure the home network with a Zero-trust model? Am I expecting too much from home consumers? Should ISP's be doing more to help consumers make the right choices here? [link] [comments] |

Can you help me diagnosing network cutouts ? Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:18 PM PDT So I'm working on WiFi and from time to time connection just goes off. After like 30 seconds it gets back, cuts off and get back again all in between 15 seconds or so. After randome time, like 1 hour or 20 minutes the issue is back again. Some days works fine . Weird connection with Powerline adapter Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:16 PM PDT A quick bit of backstory, currently live with my parents and wanted to setup my own HomeLab, but the only way they would agree to a server rack is if it went in the garage. It's not ideal, but it's secure and dry so I don't see why not? I decided that because my router is in the living room and can't move it, I would use a Powerline adapter to connect everything in the garage, to the router. Here's where it gets weird/confusing, I just went out with a Powerline adapter and my laptop to test that it would actually work, I connected it up, and I ended up getting an IP address! However, the IP I got given was 192.168.37.1, whereas my network subnet is 192.168.1.1 which weirded me out. I couldn't connect out to anything on the internet, but another weird thing is that there was another device that I could connect to with the IP address 192.168.1.6 which isn't the device in my network with that IP. It would receive and reply to my pings and I could see it's Mac address, but without any port scanning software on the laptop I was using, that is all I could do. Anyone got any ideas on what happened? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:34 AM PDT I'm new here, so be gentle.. I have 200 down, 50 up. My newer iphone, a lot of the times, runs slower on my wifi rather than using data. Are there any youtube videos or instructions on how I can fix this issue? It's pretty annoying switching to data multiple times a night when things don't load. [link] [comments] |
