Reliable build quality is important to me, and I'd also like to be able to use a stylus.
Speed and durability are the most important factors in my purchase, as I would like this laptop to last a long time and not become too slow. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2019 10:04 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 unless accessible financing options exist, USA * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, I can leave that thing plugged in all the time if I need to * How important is weight and thinness to you? Its not that important to me but if I had to throw a few extra bucks in to get a thinner, nicer looking build then I might do it. * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15' seem like a pretty perfect size. * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video editing and gaming, mostly gaming. * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to play games like Starcraft 2 comfortably at medium/high settings at the very least. Artifact (long haul boys) is the newest game I really wanna grind out, but with Diablo IV on the horizon maybe I do need something a bit nicer. Running games on high isn't a priority in general though, so long as I can get 60fps out of it. If D4 drops and I can at least run it at 50-60fps on any settings I'll be happy. * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Optical drive would be nice, but not at all necessary if it conflicts with specs and price. * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was eyeballing the Razer Blades but the 2016 models are impossible to find at a reasonable price and even though they're currently discounted heavily I still can't justify the 2017 to myself. * [link] [comments] |

Thin and light laptop around Rs.50k/$800? Posted: 29 Oct 2019 04:06 AM PDT Hey everyone, I'm looking for a thin and light laptop for light browsing & typing. Looking at models like x360 and Vivobook. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd prefer to have an i5 and need a solid keyboard. I'll be using it for writing articles, and content consumption. I've looked at laptops like the Asus Vivobook lineup, Acer Swift and the likes. I prefer a really portable laptop, as thin and light as it can get in that budget. Buying in India, if that helps. Thin gaming laptop with equivalent specs to i7, gtx 1660ti, and no rgb. Posted: 28 Oct 2019 09:14 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** I don't know just yet, preferably under $1,400 for a laptop for AAA gaming. The greater the savings the better! * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for the money * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Preferably something more on the thin side, but compromises can be made to accommodate the desired specs. Weight doesn't matter. I like a chassis that doesn't look like a gaming laptop (preferably like an XPS look). If it's moderately thicker that's ok, just no RGB, at all, whatsoever. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows 10 * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13" to 15" * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** AAA gaming please. Maybe some occasional data analytics, machine learning and related visualizations. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Something that can handle more than 60hz. So 144hz refresh rate and comparable FPS. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** No RGB. Needs to be a sleeper gaming laptop. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I want something like an XPS, spec'd like an i7 and GTX 1660ti. But that doesn't seem to exist. Hopefully something that handles heat dissipation moderately well too. Preferably no hinges that look like the HP Omen nor the Lenovo Legion y545, sorry but I don't care for the look of those middle style hinges. Any help finding something similar would be appreciated. US, around $900
Good battery life for uni and good specifications if possible.
Pretty important, max 4.8 pounds.
Windows.
14-15.6 inch.
A bit of video editing and photo editing, but the main purpose of the laptop is for programming.
No gaming
Good keyboard with backlighting, build quality good enough to last 3-4 years and has a i7 CPU.
Although I do have a demand for video editing, i'll only do 3-4 15 minute 1080p videos per year, so i don't think i need to buy an H series CPU + powerful discrete GPU (unless it is highly necessary). My main factors are battery life and durability. Edit: forgot to mention that i would like to avoid MSI products, due to past experiences. [link] [comments] |
Computer Science Student Heading to Med School Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:00 PM PDT I am a fourth year computer science student, and I really need a new laptop. I have been using an old MacBook Pro, and it is painfully slow. Really the only cs programs I need for that are IntelliJ/Eclipse and DrRacket. I will continue to do all C programming on my MacBook. However, my main problem with my current laptop is how long it takes to open notes with Word and just browsing the internet. Also, after this year, I will be heading to med school, so this will basically just turn into a note taking machine. So, I am really wanting something with quick launch times. Touch screen would also be nice for note taking. Very light gaming, but that part is not very important. I just don't know as much as I probably should about hardware, so thanks for your help! * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Hoping to keep it under $800 (USD), but of course as cheap as possible. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2 in 1 would be nice for note taking, but definitely not a required. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Somewhat important, as I will be carrying it around all day. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Preferably Windows. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** small amounts of gaming * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Mostly just Hearthstone and Civ VI, possibly Minecraft. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** No deal breakers here, but being able to draw with a stylus would be great. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** [link] [comments] |

Is Intel integrated graphics good enough for 1080p video editing? Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:40 AM PDT I find it hard to find an i7 laptop with a discrete GPU that isn't bulky/gamery in the $900 price range, so i'm considering if ditching the dGPU entirely is a good idea. I will only be editing videos like 3-4 times a year, 15 minutes per video at 1080p, so it doesn't need to be fast for video editing, just sufficent. For reference the laptop will be mainly for programming, hence the need for an i7. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2019 12:30 AM PDT Hey one and all! I've recently decided to get my wife a early "Christmas" present, but I'd really love some suggestions on this. Background info: Laptop will mostly be used at home/university, might have some occasional light gaming done. Wife usually uses Photoshop and Lightroom so those 2 programs will be used the most Requirements: Design/color: I would imagine she would generally prefer something white~, more girly(whatever that would mean), slick/cute...:D Processor: i5/i7, 7/8th gen I suppose Graphics: Integrated graphics is fine for the most part Keyboard: It has to have the 10 number keys on the side!! Thats like the biggest requirement :D Screen: Id naturally like it to have decent color reproduction... so a nice Ips. Thin bezzels! Is also something it must have. A touch/draw screen would be a huge plus, but im wary of the overall quality of these things in my price range Storage: 256gb is ok, even 128gb would be fine, as we have quite fast internet in my country and 1gb download at home, downloading is the same as opening a file:D and also replacing them isnt that expensive. Battery: Isn't to huuge of a deal. But it would be nice to get more than 4hrs on it, as in it would be nice to have something a bit above average or at least decent fast charging. Thermals: I'd also prefer it to be on the quiet sude, thats why I'm ok with Integrated graphics to reduce the noise levels. Price: ~1000euros Edit: Forgot to mention that currently my only find is a hp pavillion 15 - i5 8625u 256gb.. This would be my low end option, as it meets most of my requirements and a pretty low price as well. But Im a bit vary that it wont last that long, since this laptop might be moved a lot... Deciding between 2 similar laptops Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:56 PM PDT Hello, I am choosing between LENOVO YOGA C930 and LENOVO YOGA 730 and would like some input and opinions. The laptops will be mainly used for basic work, leisure (such as youtube and browsing). But sometimes I might need to edit some videos using Adobe products. Also, it will be carried along often. The differences between the two available to me are: C930 is 1.38 kg and has 13.9" (~35 cm) screen. Has a better battery (60Wh), better processor- Intel Core i7-8550U 8MB, but less ram (8 GB) and worse video card Intel UHD Graphics 620, which uses the main RAM. 730 is 1.89 kg and 15.6" (~40 cm) screen. Battery is 51.5 Wh, processor is Intel Core i5-8265U 6MB, it has more RAM however 16 GB, and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 4 GB of memory. Also, a small plus is HDMI output and better integrated sound system. The prices are quite similar. Main concern is: is 1050 with more RAM, but heavier and bigger better than I7 with a worse video card. For overall experience, as i understand, the smaller one (C930) is better as it is lighter and has better processor. Only thing the 1050 is better is video editing. Should I just go with comfort of a small one, or is the video card and RAM that important. The site can be translated with Google, but the specs are universal i guess and just bellow the pictures. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Gaming and electric engineering. Posted: 28 Oct 2019 11:24 PM PDT Hey, I'm planning on getting a laptop for gaming and to help me for college since I graduated. I know how GPU's work. But I've never actually had a good gaming laptop before so I don't know what to go for. I have my bar set on laptops with 144hz monitor since i found out it's impossible to play anything less than 120hz.

Windows Laptop for gaming classics? Posted: 28 Oct 2019 08:37 AM PDT EDIT: Apologies for not following the title format. I'm in the UK, £100ish max budget. My girlfriend isn't much of a gamer but loves old simulation games, such as Rollercoaster Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon, The Sims etc. I had the idea of getting her a laptop for her birthday with all the old games she loves installed on them. I'm just not sure where to begin with what model, as i've been a Macbook user for over 10 years now. Of course I realise the laptop doesn't need be anywhere near top of the range to run any of these games, and as such i'd ideally like to pay under £100 on ebay or somewhere similar for second hand, refurbished models. If need be i'm also happy to install an SSD to speed the thing up, which i've done before in my Macbook - however I don't know if I would need to buy a new copy of Windows to run on it (again, haven't used Windows in many years!) Any advice would be greatly welcome, thanks all. [link] [comments] |
Question about a Dell Egiftcard Posted: 28 Oct 2019 07:13 PM PDT I have received a $100 EGift card from dell from the laptop I purchased through my school. I personally don't need it so I was thinking of selling it on ebay or something for like $90. That would work right? It may be a stupid question I just want to make sure the egiftcard doesn't have to be used with my email or something, thanks! edit: also sorry i'm not sure where else to post this if there is a better sub please direct me to it [link] [comments] |
Help me move away from Apple ecosystem Posted: 28 Oct 2019 07:05 PM PDT So my 2014 13" MBP's logic board pooped out on me this week, and now I'm in the market for a replacement. I've been looking at refurbished Macbook Pros from different years, mainly 2015 with similar specs to my last laptop, which performed fine for everything I was doing with it (this is the best one I've found so far: 2015 MBP 13". Anyone have experience with macofalltrades, by the way? Apple's official refurbish pages don't have any 2015 MBPs in stock.)
Honestly this 2014 13" MBP gave me all I needed, and to replace the logic board is $500, so that's an option too, but I'm thinking longevity and investment into a newer machine may be worth it. Thank you!! [link] [comments] |
