    2-1 for wife's small business

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 07:28 AM PDT

Looking for a new laptop for my wife, thinking the 2-1 route is a good idea because of size, weight, and the ease of most of them with notetaking. She does some light internet, Facebook, Amazon, email, etc... She is also starting up a small design consultation business, so the size thing is really nice since she'll be carrying it to customers, etc...

I'm currently looking at the Lenovo 730 15", the Dell XPS 15" and the Surface Pro. i5, 8GB, and 256GB are the minimums and all three of these have that, and they're all about smack-dab in the price range I'm considering. I like that the Surface can also do LTE, which would be nice so she could use cellular at a customer's site if she can't get on WiFi.

Anyone have any thoughts on these three or something else I should be considering?

Is there a guide showing optimised settings / what to uninstall / deactivate / turn off on a new windows laptop that is safe and will improve performance?

I've had a little fiddle and found things like "neutral retail demo content" taking up 51.2mb. I'm just wondering how much rubbish like this is installed and if there is a list of things that are safe to delete?

    Laptop/monitor/storage solution?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 11:29 AM PDT

I have an XPS 13 and while it's slowing down on me, it's still useful for my needs (work and light photo editing).

I have purchased a USB-C monitor to connect to it to have a larger area to play with. This monitor also has a USB3.0 hub on it.

Theoretically, can I connect this monitor to my laptop via the one USB-C cable, connect an external HDD to one of the monitor's USB3.0, and have that harddrive act as an extension of my laptop whenever I have it plugged in?

    HP Omen v MSI GF72 v MSI GE63

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 05:48 AM PDT

I have the option of buying a laptop through a salary sacrifice scheme.

    There are three gaming options:

MSI GF72 17.3" i7 GTX 1060 - 256 GB SSD (i7-8750H Processor, 16GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB Graphics Card, Full HD Display, 3d Mark Time Spy score 3960). £1,080.

MSI Raider RGB GE63 15.6" i7 1 TB HDD & 128 GB SSD (i7-8750H Processor, 16GB RAM, 1 TB HDD and 128 GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB Graphics Card, Full HD Display, 3D Mark Time Spy Score 4115). £1,231.12.

HP Omen 15.6" i7 GTX 1060 - 1 TB HDD & 128 GB SSD (i7 8750H Processor, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD and 128 GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB, Full HD Display (144 Hz), 3D Mark Time Spy Score 3774). £1,143.12.

It would be used at home only, for basic laptop stuff and gaming, but nothing particularly heavy duty planned.

Which is best? The GF72 seems the best value.

What is the benefit of a ratio of 3:2

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 06:40 AM PDT

So I've recently dived into the search to buy a new laptop and I see everyone talking about wanting laptops with a ratio of 3:2 instead of a 16:9. What is the benefit of 3:2 and what effect has this if you watching video that are meant for 16:9 screens.

Acer Aspire 5 vs Asus TUF504

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 11:00 AM PDT

    Hey Guys!

Im looking forward to buying a new laptop. I´m looking for something cheap, upgradable over long term, and getting good performance for the least cost.

I want it for work, light gaming, and light video editing. I´m learning to use Adobe Premiere, currently i edit at 720p on an old laptop, but I want to do more 1080p work; and eventually/ocassionally some 4k.

I Like Aspire 5 with 8250U and MX150 because it´s cheap, it´s quite light (4.4lb for a 15.6" display), comes with 256GB SSD M2 and can add a secondary SSD i already have in my current laptop, and it has a good CPU+GPU mix, i´ve read that 8250U has a great advantage over 7th gen chips, even runs better than 7th i7s. As for being a ULV chip, even though being a cheap laptop has acceptable Battery Life (about 6hrs).

On the other hand, Asus TUF504 is the cheapest entry-level gaming Laptop. 5lb it´s a reasonable weight, features a newer 8300H coupled to a GTX1050. So it´s better CPU and GPU; and given the Light Video Editing use, it can perform better withouth trottling. It Doesn´t has an SSD, but only a HDD; so i would have to buy at least a 256GB SSD m2. However the better performance is shadowed by much worse battery life.

The Asus TUF504 is at 650USD, would need at least a 75USD M2 SSD so it brings the whole price to 725.

The Acer Aspire 5 is at 550USD, already have a compatible Sata SSD to add, and would have enough money to upgrade standard 8GB Ram to 20GB for 150USD more; bringing the whole cost to 700USD.

What do you think? What would you advise me to buy giving the planned use?

    Need a suggestion

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 06:15 AM PDT

I'm a student and I need a new laptop. Right now I have a super cheap Lenovo that's bulky and heavy. For my major, I have to down load a lot of reports and articles and I have to type a lot. Other than that, I don't really use it. I'd also like something that could support Civ V cause that's currently the only PC game I play. I'd like to do $500 or less, but idk if that's realistic. I'm open to specific recommendations or just ideas on what I should look for as far as memory, ram, processor, etc. Thanks!

    Dell G7 vs Lenovo y720 (7th gen i7, gtx 1060 vs 8th gen i7, 1050ti)

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 09:03 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a decent laptop this month for college(and game a bit) but I just can't seem to make my mind up on which one to choose. I'm not an expert on these subject matters, especially on CPUs.

    Dell G7 Intel Core i7-8750H GTX 1060 Max Q, 6GB

    Legion y720 Intel Core i7-7700HQ GTX 1060 regular, 6GB

Should I go for the better cpu(especially due to the hexa core) or the gpu? Which sacrifice is less significant for a long term use? (And as I'm probably going to get asked, I'm not sure what I'll use more heavily, both cpu and gpu are important to me) Or maybe there's an alternative to these two options with 8th gen i7 and gtx 1060?

Please help a poor guy out.. TL;DR - title

    Laptop Recommendation -Multiple Uses-

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 08:46 AM PDT

Hello everyone! Need some help ^^"

Total budget and country of purchase:

My budget is around 1000 euros and I am purchasing from Greece

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Value for Money is the most important factor for me, to buy something that will last me a few years

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I will be caring it around to University, I need around 2 hours to get there so it is important that it's portable and not heavy!

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photoshop, Sony Vegas, might need to use Solid Works but not for long periods

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

This for sure wont be a laptop for game only, might play however if I feel like it so I want it to be suitable for a game if it comes to it. Mostly played MMORPGS and FPS games.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyobard definitely, finger print reader would be good as well. I'd love it if my laptop was touch-screen and was compatible with a pen so it made editing much easier for my poor hands!!

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I know I am asking too much but there are some things I can let go from my standards if I find something (almost) suitable!

    Laptop for school.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 03:52 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: prefer to not spend more then ~1500, the netherlands.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life would be nice.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter too much, however it shouldn't weigh too much as i have to carry it with me.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programs i have to run: - ArcGIS (from ESRI) - (graphical?) adobe programs, not sure which ones exactly.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality seems usefull, but isn't a must.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. School recommends an i7, 16gb ram and at least a mx150 graphics card (or better ofc).

Camera Program for IR-Cameras on laptops

    Posted: 03 Sep 2018 03:10 AM PDT

    Hello,

My laptop has two infrared cameras intended for 'Windows Hello' facial recognition/unlocking. I am currently not using that. But, as I have them I'd at least like to mess around with them.

As a first step, I'd love to be able to take pictures/film with my IR cameras. Does anyone know a program that can do that? Or point me in a direction where I can find people who know? I know the Hardware ID (USB\VID_04F2&PID_B593&REV_0010&MI_02, USB\VID_04F2&PID_B593&MI_02 if that helps) of the cameras, but I have no clue on how to get programs to use them. I've tried a few camera recording programs (most of which were completely awful). With OBS I wasn't able to change the input device to the cameras I want. **But** OBS gives me an option: Intel RealSense 3D Camera GreenScreen ((R) (TM) and such). Looking that up, it seems promising, but looking some more tells me that I don't have one. :/

Windows Hello uses NIR, and has *probably* enough resolution to correctly identify a persons face. So taking photos with it should be fun, although it won't give those trippy coloured thermal images.

Every (serious) answer and Comment is appreciated!

Huawei Matebook X for cheap vs Matebook X Pro?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 05:34 PM PDT

Everyone talks about the pro, but I never see anything regarding the older model. If I can get it for cheap, is it worth it? The display is still nice and it has a great build. If it has bugs and flaws, that is a different question.
