What is exactly does Deleting All Secure Boot Keys do, and will it help fix my Surface Pro 3? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 04:08 PM PDT Some more information: I've had my Surface Pro 3 since 2014 and have taken great care of it. It still runs like new and has never given me any sort of problems. A few weeks ago I lent my SP3 to a sibling for a few hours (for the first time!) and they managed to drop it and shatter the screen. "I didn't know the keyboard detached and I was holding it by the keyboard!" 🙄 After making them pay for a replacement screen and installation, I got my SP3 back last week from the shop. I was in the middle of drafting for my FFL when I tried to lock one of the windows to the side of the screen (so I can have my draft on one side and my cheat sheet on the other side). Once I released the window to lock it into place my PC froze on me. I force restated and have gotten this screen ever since. At first I also got a blue screen, but now I only get this screen. I took it back to the shop and they said the device is not recognizing my OS. He mentioned that I have BitLocker installed and that if he had the key he might be able to help but I don't see an option to enter that key anywhere. He wanted $100 to proceed and I said I think I could get it figured out (now that I know it's software and not hardware related), but I'm a little lost. Where do I go from here? The only real option it looks like I have is Delete all secure boot keys, when I researched what it did I think the answers were a little too complex for me to understand EDIT: Forgot to include the screen. Here it is: https://imgur.com/a/9L6Z9A1 [link] [comments] |
Is there any software to split one physical screen into two completely separate displays digitally ? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 06:10 PM PDT I realise windows itself has snapping, and there's a few apps I know for multi window organisation, but that's not what I mean. My main reason for this is that if I have, say a window on the left, and a video on the right, attempting to fullscreen the right will cover the entire screen. Is it possible to digitally separate them so that they are seen as two literal different displays ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Aug 2018 02:36 PM PDT Edit: I don't know if this subreddit would be a good place to ask this, or if I should ask it in a networking subreddit. Please let me know. We got a new router yesterday, and I have noticed some new things pop up. For one, and something I noticed within minutes of using the internet, was that Googling "ip" no longer shows the IPv4, but the IPv6 address (one of them, at least...). I also noticed that there are multiple IPv6 entries in Command Prompt when typing ipconfig, as well as a temporary IPv6 address, and a Link-local IPv6 address, all of which were not there after getting this new router. Is any of this worth worrying about? Our old router was around 4 or 5 years old, so I don't know if what ipconfig was showing before was just what it showed when you have an outdated router. I also saw that under the Connection-specific DNS Suffix line of ipconfig, it shows nycap.rr.com. Is this normal? I don't remember seeing it on the old router. The internet works and everything, but I just noticed these things and I don't know if anything requires fixing (specifically if it's possible to have the IPv4 address show when Googling "ip"... I don't see why that would change) [link] [comments] |

Windows taking up tons of space? Please help Posted: 16 Aug 2018 08:37 PM PDT About a year ago i bought a 32gb hp stream 14 laptop. I needed a laptop for personal use but upon booting it up for the first time i learned that windows had taken up more than 28gb of the 32gb. This laptop was 200 dollars and the fact that i can't download anything and i have been using a usb to store everything for a year is starting to wear on me. How can i fix this problem and reclaim my storage? I have tried windrstat and all the tricks but non of them work. I honestly just want to be able to have at least 5 gigabytes of space. Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:09 PM PDT Been trying to install VEGAS pro 14 on my computer but it refuses to install properly. Got in contact with MAGIX who distribiute the software for support and they suggested that i should try and manually update windows. I went to the Windows update settings, saw that there was this yellow box in there that said that i should restart the computer if i want to install important updates and a button where i can restart the computer. I clicked that box and restarted it all but nothing happens. The software didn't install properly and the yellow box is still there and asking me to restart the computer to install updates. Side Note: As i typed all this i noticed that i had turned the automatic reminder on that my computer needs a update. The reason why i turned that to manually was because just like with this current situation, No matter how many times i restart the computer it won't shut up about the updates it refuses to finish. So In other words, if someone has some advice on that aswell or just on that, i would love to hear them. [link] [comments] |

Has anyone ever restore a Windows image backup to VMWare ESXi as a VM? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 06:43 PM PDT I have a windows image backup of my PC (which is currently out of commission with a dead motherboard but not unrecoverable as is). In the meantime I've been trying to restore the image I have of the system to a VM. I get an error saying that the disc is too small, and I can't seem to find a way to resolve that issue. "Error: The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small..." I checked my image and the backup is in three partitions off of one 250GB SSD (233GB, 350MB, 450MB). At various points I've created several virtual discs for the VM with larger capacities with no success. Anyone have any advice on getting the restore from system image procedure to play nice and not throw the "disc too small" error? [link] [comments] |
So uh, my C:\ drive doesn't have a recovery/UEFI partition Posted: 16 Aug 2018 05:28 PM PDT I installed Windows 10 on $drive1 with a second drive $drive2 in my PC with Windows 10 (from my laptop, have never booted into it on this PC). It's been fine until now, I removed my $drive2 to wipe and use as an external drive. Now my PC won't boot into Windows, it goes to the BIOS where my $drive1 is listed, but no "Windows Boot Manager" or any UEFI thing shows up, just the drive name. Now here's the weird part, I plugged my $drive2 into the PC and it booted. After some BIOS "looking-arounding", I found that the Windows Boot Manager was showing up in BIOS only when $drive2 was plugged in, and that's why it was booting this whole time. So looking at disk management, my to drives look different, $drive1 has two partitions, while $drive2 has 4 (one is named Recovery). $drive1 doesn't have a recovery drive, and I assume the other one that's missing has to do with the Windows Boot Manager. What in the world can I do? As of right now, everything works perfect if I keep my $drive2 installed in my PC, but that's not what I wanna do. Any way I can fix this without reinstalling again (just got all of my 1000s of programs installed :) Thanks r/windows peoples [link] [comments] |
Automatic sign-in on Windows 10 Home edition Posted: 16 Aug 2018 05:19 PM PDT I need to remotely login to my Windows desktop for the next ten days, but I'm expecting that Windows 10 will download an update at some point and restart. This means I will have to enter my PIN code. I will be using the remote desktop plugin by Google, so won't be able to enter my PIN remotely. Is there any way I can disable this so it just signs in automatically? This looks to only be possible with the Pro version of Windows 10. [link] [comments] |
How to continuously backup a Windows device aka time machine equivalent. Posted: 16 Aug 2018 04:44 PM PDT I have been using macs for the last 15 years and I am about to set up a Surface Book 2 for my wife. Our set up used to be Timecapsule for continuous backups combined with iCloud Drive for Files and iCloud library for Photos. Now I will like setup iCloud for her as we have a shared family plan and she has an iPhone (for now). But how do I backup the entire device continuously so that I can restore the whole machine should it need replacement or gets stolen? Is there even a Time Machine equivalent on Windows, either native or 3rd party? [link] [comments] |
Server 2016: Add Roles and Features Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:48 PM PDT Hey, I need to use the Add Roles and Features wizard built in to Windows Server 2016. I used it on another server with no problems. However, now I can't figure out how to get into the wizard. The Microsoft page says, "Open Server Manager, click Manage, and click Add Roles and Features". However, I don't see anything in my Server Manager that says Manage. Am I really dumb or is my server broken? Here is a screenshot of my Server Manager. What am I doing wrong? Edit: am dumb. Figured it out [link] [comments] |
What is the cheapest method to get Windows 10 Pro from Windows 10 Home? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 04:06 PM PDT Right now I have Windows 10 Home which I got from upgrading for free from Windows 7 Home. I'm looking to get Windows 10 pro as to take advantage of its extra features but I'd like to avoid having to buy a completely new licence. I've heard something of something called an Upgrade Pack but googling this leaves me with very little information and no store links (maybe it's discontinued). Any ideas are welcome, thank you. Bonus questions: If buying a new licence is my only option, what's recommended there in terms of digital or physical copy. Also is OEM recommended even if I'm looking to build a completely new and other system in the future? [link] [comments] |

It would be nice if Windows had a 'switch' feature Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:50 AM PDT There's copy and cut/move, but there's no way to just switch the location of two files or two strings without having to do extra steps. This would be specially handy when working on software like excel for things like switching two cells in a table. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Aug 2018 10:57 AM PDT Yesterday my PC downloaded some windows updates apparently (because I saw Update and Shutdown message before closing it) and after the update every about 2 hours I'm getting a weird error that says "windows is activated using your organization's activation service" and that it may expire but when i check the activation settings everything seems fine, what's happening? What is wrong with digital license transfers? Do they not work anymore? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 08:01 AM PDT I upgraded from Windows 7 (retail) to 10 on my old pc, and then just tried to transfer the digital license to my newish pc -- one that's been barely used by a friend. I'm getting this error code on the activation page: 0x803F7001 I talked to about 4 reps before finding one that didn't tell me I must use a product key. This guy, however, said that I could only use the license transfer from 7 to 10 and that it isn't possible between machines, which completely contradicts what Microsoft even says about the matter here. The rep ended up telling me that they no longer offered this service, which I found a bit odd, but maybe it went away with the free upgrades to 10. I dunno, does anyone else? Edit: I guess I'm just going to buy it [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:30 AM PDT I was playing League of Legends, when suddenly, in the middle of the game, the screen gets filled with black and black'ish green stripes. I wasn't doing nothing new, I had the apps that I use everyday open, the music was still going thru the speakers. I had to restart. I see the windows 10 logo, loading, display off for 1 second (normal), then the screen turns back on but everything black. I'm now in the safemode with networking but I cant figure out what to do, startup repair doesn't work, it stays 2-3 seconds at 'attempting repairs' and it says that startup repair couldn't fix the problem. What should I do? [link] [comments] |
