Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:27 AM PDT For the first time i built my pc, i was nervous as fuck... damn... it took me 3h +/- to build it, yeah slow af. Worked perfectly on first boot, already installed windows and the computer seems to working fine, havent tested a game yet, still have to update some drivers and stuff like that.
Thanks for everyone who helped me with questions i asked on this reddit. Here is a picture of this beauty XD : https://imgur.com/a/Yv431ak
Update: Tested fortnite max settings unlocked frames, gpu at 99% usage max it reached was 70c and cpu at 3950mhz about 65c, are those good temps ?

Pc won’t power on... feeling hopeless Posted: 15 Aug 2018 10:17 PM PDT So I just got all the components to a new pc, and started building. Had my wrist strap on to ground myself the entire time. When I hit the power button nothing happens. I have the psu switched on for sure, and I've tried multiple outlets in the house. The motherboard is a MSI B350 PC MATE ATX AM4 The cpu is a Ryzen 5 1600 with the stock cooler fan I'm building in a Corsair carbide 400c I've made sure the ram is all the way clicked in. Here's a picture of a good chunk of the mother board. I can supply more pictures if needed, just ask for what part you'd like to see, and I will deliver. If anyone could help it would very much be appreciated. The pc isn't making any noise what so ever, there was a point where I thought I was hearing a slight humming, but wasn't sure if that was the psu, or the monitor I had plugged in next to it. Edit 1: so I'm in the middle of remounting the cpu fan, will keep everyone posted. I've tried just about everything people have been commenting, so if anyone's got anymore ideas I will do them. I don't wanna feel like I wasted 1000 dollars on a brick. Also kinda worried maybe something fried my computer. Don't know how considering it's never been turned on once. Edit 2: been working to try and fix this all night and all day, finally about to get some rest. Will be active tomorrow and work with whoever is willing to work with me. Thank you everyone for your time and your responses. Hopefully with all this support We can figure this thing out! Edit 3: so I'm currently working on my motherboard, took off the cpu fan and re applying it, I found my motherboard stand off screw but there's only 1 screw and I'm trying to figure out where to put it. Edit 4: standoff'scase seem to already have standoff's installed. there's an extra standoff screw (see above) but it seems like there's no where to put it. 120 core behemoth for under $1500 Posted: 15 Aug 2018 11:12 PM PDT Background: I'm a production designer who uses V-Ray for Sketchup to do "photorealistic" renderings of my projects that involve a combination of still images as well as flythroughs. My Workstation is a TR1950X rig with dual 1070s, and I love that machine...But I needed more. Next: PICS! Important note: Some of the heatsinks were the wrong orientation for the airflow from the ebay seller after they depopulated the board. They are all correct now with all fins running front to back. I don't know if I hit the lottery here or not, but I just hopped on ebay last week and saw a lot of 5 Renderboxx sleds (2 nodes each) up for auction, and snagged them all for under $400 total, including all their own Windows 7 Ultimate keys. Each node supports dual xeon X5600 series LGA-1366 CPUs, so I bought 20 6-core X5650s for another $350, and 160gb of RAM for about another $400. Then got a bunch of 120gb SSDs for $300 more. After all, they won't be storing anything and I am just using them for the raytracing power. I bought a VGA monitor (since I didn't have the legacy IPMI credentials) at a pawn shop for $10, some patch cables, and a 24 port network switch to round out the whole assembly. A server rack will be coming later for sure. Turns out this Renderboxx setup was over 40 grand when it came out in 2010. Gotta love industry obsolescence. Here is a video of 2 of the nodes jumping in to help my workstation. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ew6CeafKqi7NhPLeWiPd6mgcTJOG0Wj4/view I only have 3 render node licenses currently, and it takes a while to distribute the scene info over my wireless network to the nodes, so they come in around the halfway point. Once I have them all up and running in my closet they will be wired connections. Each node runs V-Ray Benchmark at right around 124 seconds. Being there are 10, the theoretical compute time would be 12.4 seconds plus a few seconds to distribute the scene. My workstation does it in 41, my company's $5K renderpro does it in 51, and the top benchmarked single computer with 2 platinum 8180s does it in 13.7 seconds, which has to cost at least $20K...I'm pretty happy with this. My roommates PC wouldn't power on so I tried wiping off the prongs on the power plug and it worked. Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:06 AM PDT We had tried checking the breakers, power strip switch, PSU switch, etc. I've never done this before, but it just occurred to me to try wiping off the prongs. They weren't even visibly dirty, although maybe a little tacky feeling. But after I wiped them off it powered on just fine! Weird! [link] [comments]
How do I choose a motherboard? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:09 AM PDT I know I want a Z370, I don't understand why some of these mobos are more expensive than the others. Some seem perfectly fine and are under 100 dollars, while some are more than double this and don't seem to have anything better about them. What makes the ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING more desirable/better than something like MSI Z370-A PRO, One costs half as much. On my first build I got an MSI Z97 PC MATE, and I never had any issue, what is the real difference I am not seeing? [link] [comments]
Should I upgrade my pc or start from scratch? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 09:31 AM PDT Hello, as you read in the title I am currently in the process of debating wether it`s worth to reuse some parts of my current build or start a completley new one. First some basic information: I live in Germany and have my current build since fall/late 2013. Since then no changes were made. The pc is primarily used for gaming. Recently my graphics card started acting up which often results in games or even the pc as a whole crashing. This is my current build: CPU: Intel Core i5 4670 @ 3.40GHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 RAM: 8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. H87-PLUS HDD: ATA WDC WD10EALX-009 SCSI Disk Device Case: Sharkoon Rebel9 Pro Economy Edition I personally don`t think anything of that is reuseable and thats why I already assembled a partlist for a completely new build. I set myself a budget of 800-1000€ give or take. It would be nice if someone could glance over it at and comment on the choice of components. This is my provisional partlist: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/yRQ929 If you have any recommendations or suggestions pls post them. Anyways thanks for your attention and help. Posted: 16 Aug 2018 04:27 PM PDT I've had a glass desk for about 2 years now. It's tempered, as most are, but I'm sure the quality varies from desk to desk. I just got a second monitor today and took the time to finally clean it and noticed a couple of scratches. They were likely caused by metal bottle caps, if I had to guess. I just measured the thickness of the glass, and it's 1/4 inch, the biggest scratch is just a surface scratch, but I've heard and seen horror stories of the shit shattering like a hand grenade. Now, the reason I'm asking about it here is because of the two monitors on top of the desk, and the absolute unit of a case that I have sitting centered on the bottom shelf of the desk. If it were to shatter, would pieces of glass be likely to get inside the case and fuck up the individual components? I've also seen posts of peoples' glass case panels shattering. My predicament is, I have a $170 desk supporting over $2,000 worth of PC + peripherals, and can't decide if I should replace the desk as a precaution for something that will likely not happen, but is still terrifyingly possible. Can anyone provide input on this? The desk I have https://www.amazon.com/Z-Line-Designs-ZL2200-01WSU-Cyrus-Workstation/dp/B004VLW38Q/ What I have on top of the glass: A 23" and 24" monitor, a PS4, a couple of heavy-ish books (PS4, books, and one monitor at corners). Thoughts on what is considered an $xx PC. Posted: 16 Aug 2018 10:00 AM PDT So, this has bugged me since I first got into PCs. When a person mentions an $xx PC, they mean the the tower. That's it. If someone is looking to get into PC for the first time, that's not all they need. To go from an empty desk to working PC you need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers/headset etc. Especially since the parts you interact with most are those that I mentioned. A baller PC is great and all, but a $5 keyboard kind of kills the user experience. So I thought I'd bring up a few points for discussion, and see what people's thoughts were.

Just bought an EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3 for $680 - Good Choice? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 03:34 AM PDT No tax, no shipping, came with a 750W Gold 80+ EVGA PSU ($130 value) for free as well. Hopefully prices aren't about to come down and I bought at the right time!! Can't wait to upgrade from my 1070 for beautiful 1440p 165Hz gaming. It's done well so far for me, hovering around 100 fps with only slight graphics settings tweaks, but the 1080 Ti should give me stable frames over 100 at max settings consistently. In case anyone is curious of the deal, it's still available: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1330061-REG/evga_11g_p4_6696_kr_geforce_gtx_1080_ti.html [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Aug 2018 03:00 PM PDT Hi, I have recently replaced the gpu in my pc. I checked a site before purchasing it to make sure it is compatible. However when i plug it in the fans start spinning and stop and has no video feed, but other components are running. When i put in my old card everything runs fine. I have tried googling this but all i find is the card is loose in the pci slot or the power cable is loose I have checked both of these several times and that is not the issue. The power cable going to card has a six pin and 2 separate pins that hang loose as the card only requires 6, could this be the issue? any advice would be appreciated Thank you. "Server" for surveillance footage Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:20 PM PDT Hello and sorry for a wall of text! My electrician gave me an agreeable quote to install 6 IP cameras around the house, and part of that price is a server to store the footage. I haven't been able to ask him for the model number to check it out, but if those are anything like the NAS you can buy, it will have some anemic dual core and 1Gb of RAM. I have never dealt with NAS or surveillance systems before, so if those solutions work just fine, please let me know! Otherwise, it stands to reason that I take care of storage myself. A friend gave me a IBM x3550 M2 for free when he moved away, so I finally had a reason to take it out of the basement. It has a Xeon e5530 and 16Gb of 1067MHz ddr3 ECC memory. But because it is a 1U, those 40mm fans spin faster than a R26B at Le Mans and sound like a damn tornado. The way we are planning to install these cameras, the server would be in my garage, and I am sure I could not successfully ignore the constant noise. I considered moving the hardware into a tower and installing bigger case fans, but after reading a bit it doesn't look like it is a viable solution. Once again, if you know of a way to cool a server with bigger fans, please let me know because I am thinking about selling it off. And if indeed it is possible, should I install 2 Xeons w5590 or would my single e5530 do the job? If the IBM server is not an option, I will have to build a "server". I have a few build-related questions in that regard. 1) Do I need a hexacore Xeon, or can I get away with a 4c/8t desktop CPU? 2) Is there a factor that determines how much RAM I would need? Or can I just slap 8 to 16 Gb in there and call it a day? Also, would having ECC RAM be important for this application? 3) Do I need a GPU and how powerful does it have to be? 4) What special considerations should I make when choosing a PSU, considering the machine will always be on? 5) I read that WD has a lineup of drives designed for surveillance. Are these worth looking into or is there a better group of drives? 6) Should I bother setting up RAID 1? Once again, sorry about writing a novel. I imagine a system where drives are constantly writing requires a special approach, so I appreciate any suggestions. As for the cameras, they will be 4MP recording at 30 FPS. First time builder, a few questions Posted: 16 Aug 2018 06:34 AM PDT A big concern for me is static electricity build up, lucky for me i work in an electronics/pcb/cable factory so I have a esd wristband, coat and foot straps, is the wrist strap enough if I stand (barefoot) on a wooden floor, and connect the crocodile clip to the pc to "bond" me to it Also is an esd mat needed or is it fine if I just put the motherboard on the box it comes in and work from that (since it isnt conductive anyway) [link] [comments]
I don't know much about computers but I hope this question isn't too odd Posted: 16 Aug 2018 04:33 PM PDT I had my computer custom built around 4 years ago and I love it, but I've noticed that for the past month or so it keeps freezing! Steam keeps freezing when I start up a game, that game freezes too. Powerpoint keeps freezing if I minimize it and open it up too fast. I don't know how to check my specs, but I think they're okay. I can play Skyrim on high settings. I don't like that my computer keeps freezing though, do I need to get a new graphics card? [link] [comments]
I have built a PC before, but that was 5 years ago! Looking to build a new one! ($1500 CAD) Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:37 PM PDT Build Help/Ready:Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes! What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. This will be my home computer / rig that I mainly use to browse the internet, play games, and stream from. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) I am looking for a PC that will allow me to play games at medium-high graphics settings at 1080p / 60fps. I already have monitors, a keyboard, and a mouse. What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? I am looking to spend roughly $1500 CAD on this build. In what country are you purchasing your parts? Canada. Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!). PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
Provide any additional details you wish below. I have yet to pick a motherboard or a case, as I am not entirely knowledgeable about what type I want of each. Ideally, I only really care about compatibility for the motherboard and a black / blue case for the PC. How does this build look so far? Can anyone provide any suggestions? EDIT: I should probably get a CPU cooler as well, right? I would need a suggestion for that as well. [link] [comments]

Ryzen 1700x with 4x8GB 3200MHz RAM? Worth it? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 04:21 PM PDT Hey guys, after pulling the trigger last year i want to upgrade my rig and was wondering if the bios updates support quad channel memory already since i remember that it was an issue at the beginning for non threadripper cpu's here is my setup: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/VDJ3mq (there is some peripheral stuff in there as well since i use this list to keep up with value and cost and such) i tried to look it up on amd website, but there is only marketing information on the 2nd gen ryzen an no real information on what i need i hope you guys can help me out here [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 Aug 2018 04:18 PM PDT Hi everyone, I have a Ryzen 2600X with a Geforce GTX 1070 and a recently purchased ASUS ROG-SWIFT-PG248Q which is a 24inch 1080p 1ms GSYNC 180hz TN panel. I don't play too many games but I do play Street Fighter so super low latency is required. I was wondering if I should upgrade and get a 1440p 27inch 144hz GSYNC monitor like the Dell S2716DGR which is a 27inch 1440p 144hz GSYNC TN panel? or get an ASUS ROG SWIFT/Predator 27inch IPS panel? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:23 PM PDT (Originally posted on Tomshardware) First of, here's my build https://pcpartpicker.com/user/trustandbust/saved/x7NQZL Bought the PSU and GPU in early 2017 and the rest in December/January, had this issue for the first time in February. I was playing Gothic 2 with the DX11 renderer at like 200FPS and it crashed after an hour. Didn't think about it much, it didn't happen again after. I had it a second time just last month - I was playing The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, an UE4 game and the game crashed when I didn't have Vsync@60hz enabled, although it was only running at like 72fps (monitor has a FACTORY refresh rate of 72hz),. other UE4 games usually worked fine (GPU is loud in all of them though :p ). It also happened in another single player game after unlocking FPS. Anyway, today I had it again, but I wasn't playing anything, just talking on Discord with some friends. Pressing the power button to shut my system down didn't even work, I had to use the switch on the back of the PSU. I thought that this is a PSU issue, but I'm not sure, since it seems more likely that it's a GPU issue. My PSU isn't the best but it should be enough to power my system. Just ran Memtest86+ for 2 hours, 2 passes and Furmark and Prime95 don't crash my PC either. GPU gets up to 80 degrees in Furmark and my CPU only hits 74 degrees, so that should be cool enough. My fans are still running when it happens, I think my keyboard RGB turns off though(not sure about the rest), my PC doesnt turn off(let it run for 5 minutes) and it's LEDs are still on. Windows Event Log reports a critical error, stating that my PC was shut down unexpectedly, around the time it happened. Any idea on what this could be? Any help will be appreciated. This just happened after installing the newest drivers after DDU'ing. So, it's the GPU then? Hope that Sapphire support is good enough... [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:57 PM PDT So I have a CM Masterlite 240 where I swapped the normal fans with LED fans to match my build. Now I have the two fans lying around. Is push/pull worth the aesthetic sacrifice or should I just say fuck it and put them on instead of having the fans doing nothing? The radiator is front mounted with the LED fans showing from the front of the glass case. [link] [comments] |
