Why I came back to Windows from Linux? (My recent experience) Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:29 AM PST In 2012 i dumped Windows altogether for Ubuntu Linux which is by far the most widely used Linux distribution. The primary reason was my utter dislike for Windows 8 which had recently arrived and my will to "try something new". Obviously learning Linux was not so easy but boot times were much faster compared to Windows 7. It felt much more snappier than Windows. Unity worked great for me about how neatly it organizes the window and everything. Fast forward 2017, i came to realization how utter garbage my favourite desktop distribution had become with 17.10. The UI is terrible (i know its relative). Furthermore, the terrible compatibility with my new laptop (screen tearing, chopping audio, battery drain, bad Wifi signal) persuaded me to try Windows once again. Now after using Windows 10 Creators Update for about 6 months, i can say its so so so stable. Even the well updated Ubuntu version and many bugs. Windows seem to work flawlessly and for the record, i have turned Windows update off as i like manually updating stuff. Its good to get stability and compatibility back again and its a great experience for me as these two were missing from the PC Linux platform. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jan 2018 05:19 PM PST I was wondering if there was a macro or a key I can press to tab straight to my desktop screen instead of having to alt-tab through everytime or click in the bottom right corner [link] [comments]
Windows 10 creators update font color issue. Posted: 14 Jan 2018 05:02 PM PST So my computer decided to update windows to the creators update, and now my desktop icon fonts are black, I can get them to change to white by changing the background to a solid color, but as soon as I log out of the account, or restart, it reverts back. Anyone got any ideas? It's annoying the hell out of me because I can't read the icons now against my dark background. [link] [comments]
How to get an application to not detect a controller? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 10:09 AM PST I'm using a controller in various games, and many of them have deadzone issues, or bad mapping. So I want to use antimicro to setup my own deadzones and button maps, but then I get double mapping. How do I make an application not detect my controller ( Xbox One Controller wired)? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:42 AM PST Hey guys, I usually tether my phone's mobile data to my Windows laptop and would like to restrict data usage for certain apps. I came across Glasswire. I've had the 7 day trial and it seems to do the job. However, after the 7 days, the firewall feature is no longer available and needed to pay for a subscription to continue using this feature. Is the subscription worth it? Are there any free alternatives? Thanks in advanced. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:32 AM PST If you were holding out on upgrading to Windows 10 (assuming the assistive technologies loophole would be open forever) you should know that this offer will expire on January 16, 2018. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade
Note that they are "not restricting the upgrade offer to specific assistive technologies". So even if you've ever needed or think you might ever need that magnifying glass (for example), you qualify. See https://www.howtogeek.com/265409/you-can-still-get-windows-10-for-free-from-microsofts-accessibility-site/ for more information. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jan 2018 04:38 PM PST For example, the Windows Store won't load. Xbox app won't load. Even the weather app. I uniformly get a loading screen on every one. Anyone dealt with this? Can you explain what's going on and how to fix it? [link] [comments]
Why does Windows Defender take two actions to remove a virus? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:40 AM PST If I click "items in quarantine" it shows me the virus and I click remove. Then if I go to "all detected items" it is there again and I have to click remove again? Am I doing something wrong? [link] [comments]
Meltdown and Spectre patch status? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:43 AM PST So what is the update on this? Should we be worried and how much? What is the speed benchmarks on alleged performance slowing down of Cpu? Please answer no need to upvote. [link] [comments]

After Updating Windows 8.1, I get stuck in an auto-repair loop! Posted: 14 Jan 2018 05:37 PM PST I tried every step except the last the two from this link Nothing works, I have scoured the interned for every possible cmd command. Refresh windows doesn't work too. System Restore did not help me also. I installed W8.1 on a different hard drive but same pc, and as soon as I updated it, the same exact problem STARTED! WTF MICROSOFT?! What am I supposed to do now? If download updates for my windows, my windows gets broken in a auto-loop! [link] [comments]

can someone give me registry values who hasn't clicked "personalize" for cortana? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 01:45 PM PST I was trying to figure out how to get cortana gone and I clicked "personalize" thinking I'd get more settings to shut her up and turn her off, but it turns out that was her "go ahead and use my stuff to suggest things to you" button. in hkey_local_machine -> microsoft -> policymanager -> experience -> allowcortana, I think these are what determine if she's allowed to do that or not. I was wondering if someone who hasn't clicked personalize would post their key values. Mine are Behavior: 0x0000000020 (32) highrange: 0x000000001 (1) lowrange: 0x000000000 (0) mergealgorithm: 0x0000001(1) policytype: 0x00000004(4) value: 0x00000001(1) I also disabled everything she I could that she could collect but I really want to see if I can't set it to before I clicked personalized. I really don't want to have to reinstall windows over this. EDIT: messed up some of the values [link] [comments]
Any ideas on when FF will stop supporting Windows 7? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 05:53 AM PST FF stopped supporting XP in 2017 so it makes some sense to think that FF will stop supporting 7 in the 2023-2025 time period- My guess is it will be version 80 or something. In a perfect world it would be supported indefinitely. Any guesses? [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2018 10:53 PM PST Hey guys, as title says, even streaming a 1080px30 video puts ~50% (~70% at 2160p) load on my no by means awful i5 6200u and ~10% (30% at 2160p) on my overclocked i7 6700k I can't confirm that this is the first time it has happened, but this (after the meltdown update) is definitely the first time it's been bad enough for me to actually notice (laptop noticeably lags when scrolling, multitasking, etc, occasionally jumps around ~100%), and 4k on the laptop is basically unplayable with play/pause delay, out of sync audio, playback lag, etc Using chrome on win10, but issue persists in edge. Update: files on the computer (mkv, mp4, etc) play without issue Update: 4k on vimeo has no issues, html5 player Update: full screen has no effect either way, all extensions disabled has no effect, gpu usage is completely normal, hardware acceleration on chrome is enabled Update: well this is fucking weird, watching a twitch stream at 1080x60 gives no abnormal cpu usage, but watching a past VIDEO on twitch using the same player DOES cause the issue, what the hell? Important windows update reset all settings Posted: 14 Jan 2018 04:45 AM PST Yesterday night I got a notice to install an important update for windows, I ended up shutting down and updating and going to bed. Now I started my PC back up and it seems windows has created a new user account for me while making my previous inaccessible (it still exists on my drive). If I try to roll back to the previous update it says I need to remove the account added with the update, but going to the screen it asks me to go to doesn't show any option to delete said account. Is there anyway to still rollback to the previous update or make windows see my old account again so I don't lose all my settings? Additionally my previous user account is in the users folder for the current install instead of in the windows.old folder, so why can't I access it? [link] [comments]
Installation Media isn't installing Posted: 14 Jan 2018 06:04 AM PST I want to create installation media for my computer; I don't want an ISO file I want the USB itself to have the files I need. So I borrowed my friend's laptop, plugged in my USB, and downloaded the Windows 10 installation media from this link https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209, onto the USB. MediaCreationTool > Accept > Getting a few things ready... Create Installation Media (USB Flash Drive, DVD, ISO File) for another PC > Next > I select appropriate Language, Architecture, and Edition > Next > Getting a few things ready... and then I receive this message! 8GB of free disk space is needed on (C:) My USB, (E:) in this case, has 14 GB free. Why does the installation media need my friend's (C:) drive to have 8 GB free? Also I selected the "for another PC" option, so why does this error message show up? Your help is greatly appreciated. Posted: 14 Jan 2018 05:58 AM PST "X"=first five letters of my MSaccount email and name of my account/user folder in "Users" Hi, I'm trying do delete old Windows and Programs folder from and old HD in which I don't have my OS installed anymore. I had the trustedInstaller authorization needed message so I changed owner to my account, writing "X" in the textbox. It was recognised ad my actual Microsoft account in owner tab so I thought I was ok. I tried to delete but this time I get "you need authorization from ThisPC - "X" to delete. Retry/exit. I'm actually logged with that account. any suggestion please? [link] [comments]

PiHole blocking Windows Telemetry preventing Spectre updates? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 09:11 AM PST I've yet to receive any of the spectre / meltdown updates. Intel 2600, Asus p67 mobo, Win10. not seeing any of the updates listed in Win Update & verified using powershell that they haven't been installed. The top 3 blocked domains on the networks pi-hole (Pi based dns anti advert & provacy black hole (https://pi-hole.net/) https://i.imgur.com/GyO4A7o.png Could this be preventing the relevant security updates - as in, is receiving these patches dependent on submitting telemetry data to MS ? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:58 AM PST I can get it all the way to the login screen, and then the screen goes black and nothing works. I don't know what version of Windows 8 it's on but I'm wondering if there's a way I can install Windows 10 on top of it, or if there's another easy fix to get it working again. I've recovered all of the files so I don't mind wiping the hard drive. I have a Windows 10 computer, and thought I could make an installation USB. But I don't know if that's the best route to take. Windows 7: Changing my system locale for non unicode programs breaks my Windows Posted: 14 Jan 2018 07:48 AM PST Long story short: To play a Japanese game i need to change the system locale to Japanese. But while the system is rebooting, i get a bluescreen, every time. The only way to get my Windows back running was to reload the last functioning configuration in the boot screen (F8). So basically changing my system locale for non unicode programs breaks my system. Is there a way to prevent that? Further information: It's Windows 7 Professional... [link] [comments] |
