Sunday Rant/Rage (Jan 14 2018) - Your weekly complaint thread! Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:10 AM PST Note 1. Join our Discord, IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions. This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:
Rules 1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer. 2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars. 3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on. [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 11:08 AM PST Inspiration for these came from the many "iPhone internals" wallpapers floating around. I wanted one for myself and made a few of the Google Pixel XL. Thought I could make more, so here they are! All original photo credit goes to iFixit and their incredible teardown guides. I skewed, cropped, color graded, and enlarged their material to make these. I understand that some of them are "backwards". Many new phones use their screen literally as the midframe. Removing it shows a boring piece of metal, making all interesting circuit board pics "backward". I worked with what I had and hope y'all like them :) Google Pixel XL 2 Google Pixel XL LG G6 Galaxy S7 & S7Edge Galaxy S8 & S8+ Galaxy Note 8 Enjoy!
Edit: Formatting, and more pics!

Fun stuff to do with throwaway phone Posted: 14 Jan 2018 05:27 PM PST I recently got my hands on an old beater LG Tribute. After doing a lot of research online and trying a bunch of root APKs, it looks like rooting it isn't feasible which is a bummer (if anyone knows of a way to do so I'm all ears). I'm an IT guy and intermediate Android developer who loves hacking stuff to do weird shit, so if anyone has any ideas on what I could do with it I'd love to hear them. I don't have it tied to any accounts and there's no SIM card, so as long as a factory reset will fix it I couldn't care less what happens to it. I also have a Raspberry Pi 3 lying around that's still waiting for a good project idea, so maybe the two could go together. [link] [comments]
It's amazing how much scrolling behavior influences the feel of a device Posted: 14 Jan 2018 12:19 AM PST I recently flashed an Oreo ROM that felt really great and smooth when scrolling, more than my Nougat ROM. It did have some issues though so I had to move back to my Nougat ROM but still wanted that scrolling behavior back. After searching around for a bit, I found a 4yr old Xposed module called XUI. I've used Xposed in the past but never had a reason to keep using it until now. Crazy enough, it still works on Nougat, or at least the features I needed, mainly scrolling friction and fling velocity. It's infinitely variable so you can fine tune it to your taste; I'm a sucker for the glassy long coast time feeling, and moved to 50, from 150 that my ROM was stock. I didn't mess with any other features in that module other than scrolling cache set to animation and scrolling, under listview options, since being so old, I'm pretty sure it's possible to break the ROM. I just figured I'd let some people know how to modify scrolling behavior, since it's something I've always wanted to be able to do, and really has a significant impact on how the device feels to use, in my opinion. EDIT: I'm not talking about scrolling smoothness, I'm talking about scrolling friction. The Pixel isn't any different because Android has the same scrolling friction on every device. I've tuned my governor for max smoothness using the GPU profiler so it can't get any smoother anyways. Scrolling friction is when you give the screen a little nudge to scroll up or down, and it come to a slow, soft stop, or it comes to a rather abrupt stop like Android does without this modification. What if Google Home asked "Anything else" after a command Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:33 PM PST I had this idea based off a post I saw on here a few weeks ago suggesting the Home continue listening after a command so you don't have to keep saying "Hey Google" when you need to have it do multiple things. Many people said this would be bad UI since you would have to wait for it to stop before you could continue talking. What if instead the Home asked "Anything else?" You could either ask it a question or just say no. What do y'all think? [link] [comments]

Which Android phone has held up throughout the years best? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:16 AM PST So pretty much the title. What Android phone of yours has held up the best (battery, performance, physical wear)? I feel like my One M7 held up the best while my Galaxy S6 held up the worst. I had both for a bit over a year I think. [link] [comments]

Like video games, manufacturers should "remaster" phones with modern specs & features. Eg. Nexus 4 Posted: 14 Jan 2018 05:10 AM PST I remembered using the Nexus 4, it was a beauty back in it's days with pretty well rounded specs. It was the first phone that got me started on the pure Android experience trend. The design was outstanding, it had a glass back with a pretty carbon texture underneath it. Rubbersied material on the side of the phone for good grip. No camera bumps, pretty miniscule side bezels. It's just so goddamn pretty to look at. But of course the specs are very outdated now. I would love to see manufacturers, however impossible it might be, to remaster the phone, keep the same beautiful design, but change the internals, give it the latest Snapdragon processor, a good increase in RAM, upgrade the camera and storage, best of all keep it stock Android and we might just have a one hell of a phone again. Not just Nexus 4, this could be applied to many smartphones out there. [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:20 AM PST A lot of times I have no idea what to watch e.g. on Netflix, and I figured most of the stuff I watch comes from my friends' recommendations, so I made Voxy and it lets you create a list of movies and shows you'd like to watch from your friends' recommendations. So instead of them having to recommend stuff in person, you can talk about, and create a list of, movies and shows you want to watch in the app. The idea is to just always have great list of what to watch next. You also share reviews of your favourite movies and shows with your friends. If you add a show to your watchlist you'll automatically be notified whenever it's about to air. Here are the features Voxy comes with:
The app is still in beta. I'm posting this to get feedback on the app, some early users, any suggestions for changes, anything I missed, pretty much anything will be helpful. Thanks :-) [link] [comments]
