Someone please tell the Windows UI team than "Open new window" and "Open IN new window" are not semantically equivalent

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 08:24 AM PST

This is a simple thing but it's really leaning on my last nerve this morning for some reason.

I use Open in new window in Explorer a LOT. I work on multiple servers all day, usually little bits at a time like one or two files transferred from one to the other. When I am looking at the local files in Explorer, I then choose File--> Open new window to find the destination. Then I can copy files occasionally over the span of a day. Works perfectly.

EXCEPT... If I have FOLDERS I want to transfer, if I select them before opening the new window (complex selections can take a long time and causes pain in my CTRL pinky, so I usually do it first), Windows ever so helpfully thinks surely I meant the "open IN new window" command. This command isn't in the File menu under Explorer. It's in the context menu when you right click on folders or if you choose more than one folder.

It's not what I want. I want the command I was clearly choosing in the UI.

This kind of "helpful" inconsistency is so frustrating and a kick in the shin to people in the world like me who work hard to create consistent, logical UI in their web apps.

Can I turn my frustration into action, somehow get this message to the developers in a way that might really get to them?

Have an older Sandy Bridge quad core? Here is my benchmark on the meltdown-spectre issue.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 04:27 AM PST

So the big scary meltdown-spectre, primarily-Intel-affecting issue was allegedly hotfixed by Microsoft last night. (Update 405KB6892 if wondering) Expecting to take anywhere from 5% to 30% performance from CPUs especially those older than Skylake iirc. (4xxx) My CPU is a Sandy bridge 2550k @ 4.6GHz and I saw no loss (a slight gain actually) in Unigine's DX11 benchmark. Cinebench's synthetic testing saw a 3.1% (almost margin of error loss) and a 3.1% loss in the OpenGL test. This patch isn't a big deal if you have a super overclocked sandy beast. Apparently SSD 4k reads/writes are hit hard but I don't care enough I just play teh gaems.

LOOKS LIKE I STILL AINT' UPGRADIN'

    https://imgur.com/a/j5yTv

Mind you I do have a stupidly high OC for a sandy bridge, will hit lower'ly clocked chips a bit harder, probably 5% or so

If you have no idea what the hell the point of this post was or why I would bother upgrading 6 year old hardware.. here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7W5zsLp7xY

Yes I know it's a 2550k not a 2500k. They are nearly identical just no iGPU onboard.

How do I schedule password changes for local account?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:03 PM PST

I have a very specific scenario, please bare with me.

I have some offline PCs that have no connection to a domain/domain controller and thus no AD handler. These PCs are in locations all around the country with no local helpdesk. However, we would like the local account password to change monthly. That's easy enough to achieve with Local Group Policies if we wanted the user to select their password.

However, and this is where it gets tricky, what we want instead is the password to change to a particular format.

    eg. ABCD-Jan-2017&

Where ABCD is a static predefined 4 letter alpha string
Where Jan is the first 3 letters of the month Where 2017 is the current year

I've considered writing a scheduled batch file, but that would require someone with IT knowledge to set it up on each local machine which is a time and cost expense I'd like to avoid. Is someone familiar with a solution? I'm hoping for maybe a tool that comes with a straightforward installer that I could pop on a USB and send out to the sites, that someone without IT experience could install.

Your ideas and help are very much appreciated.

Windows Temp - Multiple TMP_Z folders

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 12:32 PM PST

I've been seeing multiple TMP_Z folders lately that contains xml files regarding vnd.openxmlformats which consumes most of the C: drive. Would like to know what application dumps it in the temp folder, and how to lessen/stop it.

If the server hosts a FTP site, does the dump folders come from it regarding failed uploading?

Desktop is in OneDrive, How Can I Remove it?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 04:49 PM PST

Ok, so my desktop is in my OneDrive folder, which makes all the icons on my desktop have the annoying little green check, also I just don't want my desktop in the cloud. I can delete it but if I do it will get rid of all my icons, and some might say, well why don't you just re-add them? I would but then they are also saved by OneDrive. Not an issue I need to be fixed but one that would be nice to be fixed.

PSA: Installing Spectre/Meltdown security roll-up on Windows Server without Antivirus

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 04:36 PM PST

It looks like if you are not running an antivirus product on Windows Server, you need to manually add the AV registry key before the security roll-up will be offered through Windows Update.

    Long login authentication failure

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 02:56 AM PST

Oh, hi there! Having "Service_Administrator" login which is 21 symbols long and which Windows 2012 fails to authenticate. If I use "Service_Administrato" (20 symbols) auth passes. I know that there is 20 symbols limit for SamAccountName, but why Windows fails to authenticate me with login > 20 symbols?

Assistance with Acronis True Image Backup

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 03:15 PM PST

    Hello there!

I want to do an Image Recovery backup of my PC to reinstall Windows 10 and recover it, but since the Windows integrated version doesn't work (always gives an error), I downloaded Acronis True Image. To test it, I did a full backup (OS, apps, etc.) and tried to recover it to the third drive I have - installed Windows and downloaded Acronis there for this. I don't see any recovery options, the 'Recovery' tab doesn't even see the backup that's on my external HDD.

Am I missing something here? Should I have used a different kind of backup? Or does it only work if I reinstall Windows on the same exact drive with the same exact configs?

    Thanks!

Samsung NP350EC7 bluetooth disappeared when new patch was applied.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 03:11 PM PST

This morning, I was logging onto my laptop when I noticed that I didn't hear the familiar 'beep' that happens when my bluetooth speaker connects. As I played around a but more, I discovered the the bluetooth icon is gone from my action center as well. I restarted and it's still gone. Even in the device manager nothing is working. Am I the only who is experiencing this or is it widespread.

Big "DeliveryOptimization" folder, can I delete it?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 04:26 AM PST

Hello everyone, so I have a small SSD for my OS, 120gb. For that reason, saving space is important, and I recently noticed that I lost a big amount of space, without knowing why.

With the use of WinDirStat, I found out that it's the OptimizationDelivery folder that is taking almost 20gb. I tried using system files cleaning option from windows but it is saying that the Delivery optimization files are at 0, so it's not cleaning anything when running it.

Is it safe to delete this folder manually? Thanks.

    New keyboard wont install properly

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:58 AM PST

I just received a Ducky One DKON1608 mechanical keyboard and used it once successfully. It worked just fine, but now when i plug it in nothing happens, i hear Windows making a sound but the keyboard doesnt get power. There is no light on the keyboard. When the laptop is booting i do see the light for Numlock appear for a bit, and it all works fine in the BIOS, until Windows starts.

I've tried a new cable, removing the driver in device manager and updating it. I've also tried plugging it in different ports, none of them work. I've disabled power saving options on all the USB hubs. None of it works on my machine. I'm using Windows 10 Home Version 1709, on a Gigabyte P35X V6 laptop.

Using USBDview i can see the device, but it seems to keep unplugging and plugging back in until i disable it. https://streamable.com/cgx4r Any thoughts?

Make only certain programs visible to other users.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 01:02 AM PST

So I have my main account on my PC (Windows 10) that I've been using for a while, I've installed plenty of programs for various things like gaming etc. I now want to create a work account so that I can install software specific to my job.

I've created the work account and set it as a standard user, however I can still see most of the programs I installed on my personal account. Is there an easy way of retroactively changing whether or not a program is available for all users? I know it's possible to restrict programs but I'd rather they weren't visible at all.

On all of my servers I get only the "Security Monthly Quality Rollup (KB4056894)"

Do I need to install KB4056897 also? or is it included in the KB4056894?
