How to Clean brushed metal chassis?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 10:01 AM PST

    Question in the title.

Just recently got an Acer Predator Helios 300. BadAss laptop and looks great but the Brushed Metal chassis is a finger/handprint magnet. I want to know how I can go about regularly cleaning it without potentially degrading the chassis or discoloring it. Should I use some sort of wipe or a soap solution or just a polishing rag?

My laptop doesn’t boot anymore from my SSD. My settings are OK and my SSD isn’t broken.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:59 PM PST

    Hello,

First off English isn't my native language, i'll try te keep it short.

Like the title stated my laptop doesn't boot anymore from my SSD. First i thought it was a faulty drive, so i bought a SATA cable and took the drive out off my laptop and connected it toanother laptop, it connected and all my files are safe (happy).

I tried everything to try and boot my laptop from my SSD. Is it possible my laptops internal connector for my harddrive is broken? Or should i try something else?

PS my laptop is 5 years old it is a Toshiba Satellite (NB10-A-11U)

    Thanks in advance

Why does Coil Whine still exist in today's laptops?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:48 AM PST

Every year we get incremental updates with CPU and GPU, along with faster SSDs, in lighter and thinner form factors. Wonderful.

And yet coil whine still exists even in flagship lines such as Dell XPS.

With the significant advancements since the ultrabook form factor was first introduced, why has coil whine still not been eliminated as a problem from an engineering or manufacturing perspective? Anyone have any thoughts on the matter.

External batteries for laptops. Worth the money?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 11:26 AM PST

I was looking into external batteries that can provide AC power sufficient for a laptop and came across an issue, which is most of them are rated for 5A and below and have a pretty low/weak output in general. My Lenovo laptop happens to be 6.75A I think and maybe 120W. Some users said they used the 5A rated chargers perfectly fine aside from only getting 2-3 hours max on it.

Is there an alternative solution that can handle >5A/120W adapters? Or am I stuck taking the risk of overloading a 5A charger and potentially hampering its effectiveness in the process?

Looking to have some laptop time in an RV on road trips without falling prey to plugging into the vehicle's battery. Nothing major. Some video editing here, some light gaming there, etc.

Brand New - Dell XPS 9360 - £650 - Deal or no Deal?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 10:59 AM PST

Hi ladies and gentlemen of the Reddit verse.

Hoping to get some advice on a potential laptop deal in the UK. I have the opportunity to purchase a brand new Dell XPS 13" 9360 (Late 2016 model) for £650.

    Specs are as follows: CPU (Intel Core i5-7200U @ 2.50GHz) - RAM (8.00GB) - SSD (256GB) - GPU (Intel(R) HD Graphics 620) - Display (13.3" Full HD)

Requirements: Bit of everything - General purpose. Web browsing. Streaming - Music + Video. Desktop publishing. Spreadsheets. Photo editing. Coding. Light gaming. Experimenting with Unity 3D.

How does this deal stack up spec and price wise to the competition in 2018? Is it a bargain? Looking to get an idea of value for money. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you :)

Looking for a laptop, USA, max of $2,000

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 10:53 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, max of around $2,000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Must be a 2 in 1 convertible, not one with a removable keyboard. good battery life preferred. Best CPU and GPU for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, wanting something very mobile

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 - 15.6

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming. light esports titles, ( League of Legends, Paladins, Overwatch, PubG, perhaps some games in the future)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 1080P, 60fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Must have a touchscreen, good build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am sick of lugging around my computer when I go places for gaming. Looking for something portable I can take with me, while also using it as a tablet to doodle on, or playing some games with the touchscreen.

Have also thought about buying something like the AORUS gaming box in the future, so having the thunderbolt 3 ports, with the needed lanes would be a plus. (the $2,000 limit not including any kind of EGPU) Looking at the new Specterx360 they just announced at CES with the AMD graphics as the front runner right now, but would love some recommendations.

How can I check if my Laptop has 2 RAM sockets?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 10:33 AM PST

I have 4gb RAM on my laptop, this is too basic for my needs so I must upgrade. Now, I can buy one 8gb stick or I can buy one 4gb stick and just add it so would have 4 + 4, which is better than 8gb (or so I've heard). The problem is, idk if my laptop supports it.

[Question] How capable and powerful is my laptop in reality?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 06:32 AM PST

    Acer Aspire ES1-572-35HJ

    i3 7100u @ 2.3ghz, 12gb DDR4, 256gb SSD, 1366x768 display

Obviously, compared to stock the 1tb HDD was replaced with a 256gb SSD and it has 4gb more RAM.

Game wise is mostly what I'm interested in, but just what exactly can I do with this? It's snappy and responsive, and all I really use it for is when I'm on the couch and want to watch YouTube videos or stream movies, anime, or TV shows.

Coming from a desktop, so I'm not really sure.

I have a Acer Aspire V15 Nitro and like to play games on it but i have absolutely terrible FPS in games i should be able run easely. for example in overwatch i have about 12-18 FPS my GPU usage is always at 100% and it also is constaltly at about 65 C my CPU is always at 80-90 C

Edit: i have tried: making sure my laptop is using my GPU not intigrated graphics, making sure all drivers are up to date, reinstalling drivers, resetting PC, reinstalling windows, reinstalling games

    GTX 1060 6GB VRAM I7 7700HQ 16GB DDR4 RAM (i got it upgraded from 8GB to 16GB) Windows 10 64bit

Does Dell still make Laptops that use the e-port docking station?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 06:52 AM PST

I'm trying to buy 2 new laptops for my office. My coworkers want to be able to use their old E-Port docking stations. They are not a fan of the USB ones. Granted they haven't used the Type-C ones. Does anyone know if Dell sells any laptops that still have the docking station port on the bottom of the laptop? I've tried talking with one of their support representatives and it's been a nightmare. Thanks.

Any kind person able to help answer some quick questions for this newb please?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 05:44 AM PST

Anyone roadmap in an eli5 fashion what to do where and when and how for this newb? Looking to get into cryptocurrencies and want added privacy from the gummit (just a principled AnCap, not doing anything shady/immoral, not a chairperson of the DNC). This user has been told to get some form of Linux and the portability of a laptop is sweet, but the modability of a desktop is a plus if the laptop is at least somewhat moddable. This user was suggested to get T A I L S or Ubunt, and this user looked up a YT guide how to put T A I L S on a USB and another USB stick and to use that as the harddrive for the laptop and do sensitive browsing on that with T O R built-in, which is cool because that's one less thing to download. This user is a newb at such things aside from going to a frend's house years ago and seeing what DNMarkets and torenting looked like (didn't buy anything just marveled at a world unknown to this user at the time) and never ran anything like that on computers this user owned. Across multiple subredits in cryptocurrencies, vpns, and OS's, this user has a somewhat clearer picture but not quite done yet. Is there a kind person out there/here that can detail a roadmap of a step-by-step of what to do? This user is also anti-INTEL monopoly and DELL (being that they're both tentacles of the n W o and there was some breaking news anything INTEL is going to go down in several areas in the 17% to 35% ish range the other day/week, yes?).

Thanks very much. PeaceLuvandAnrchy because there's a(n Info)Wahr on for yuh mind!

TL;DR LF an AMD/non-intel/non-dell moddable laptop that runs Linux this user could put T A I L S or Ubunt on and buy some cryptocurrencies and HODL for a year or so. Also play some M M Os well enough without being at 3-18 fps. What do what how when where from either the start of going on a computer site or walking into retail store?

I recently bought a "HP ENVY 13t Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 2GB NVIDIA Graphics - 4K Ultra HD" for $1165 but was wondering if the base model of the macbook pro (2.3GHz Processor i5 128GB SSD) ~$1249. I will just be using the laptop for normal web browsing but would like to have a laptop that can last me a while.

Has anyone ever heard of the Medion Erazer X7851 laptop?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:15 PM PST

So, I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this, but has anyone ever heard of the Medion Erazer X7851 laptop?

    17.3", i7, GTX 1060 16GB RAM, 1TB and a Windows 10 laptop.

Currently looking for a decent gaming laptop up to around £1300 and I stumbled across this one online. Literally perfect, has everything I wanted and more. However, there are legit no reviews on this laptop. I've looked on YouTube and just Google, but I can't find any at all. It's a German brand, but I can't even find any videos of that specific laptop in German! I can find similar ones, but not that specific number.

I can't tell if this laptop is brand new or if it just doesn't exist in some way. It's on the Tesco website (similar to Target or Walmart, for my US friends) so it should be legit, but I just don't know. Emailed them to ask about it.

    Has anyone heard of it?!

HP Envy x360 vs Lenovo yoga 720

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 04:59 PM PST

Hello folks. I'm in the market for a new computer and as of now I've narrowed it down to the HP envy x360 15" and Lenovo Yoga 720 13". The HP I've found has the following specs: Intel i7, 12 Gb RAM, 128 Gb SSD + 1 Tb Disk drive. The Lenovo: Intel i5, 8 Gb RAM, 256 SSD Both are the same price (essentially), so naturally I would gravitate towards the HP which has better specs across the board. However, after reading a bunch of reviews, I've found that the Yoga seems to have overall better reviews than the Envy, and a lot of people claim that Lenovo is a more reliable company than HP in the case of malfunctions/other problems.

So my tradeoff is between build quality/reliability and speed/memory capabilities. I am a college student studying computer science, so I might at some points have 30 tabs open, a compiler/ program running, a text editor open, microsoft word, and itunes. My current computer (old macbook) lags terribly and sometimes freezes with this kind of workload so I'm looking for something that can handle this basic level of activity with high speed and no crashes.

    I'd appreciate any advice. thanks

    Samsung Notebook 9 Pro $800

    http://www.microcenter.com/product/481564/Notebook_9_Pro_156_Laptop_Computer_-_Black

What do people think of this deal? My understanding is that this is one of the false resolution 4k displays. But I am not exactly sure what that means, as it is 3840x2160. And I realize that both the cpu and gpu are both older, the cpu being an i7 6700hq and the gpu being a 950m. But is this a good deal at $800?

    Thanks for your input.
