Looking to get a new laptop to game with Posted: 14 Jan 2018 09:54 AM PST Hello, everyone! I recently went back to college and decided not to bring my PC with me, but to instead get a gaming laptop (figured it would be easier to transport around). Unfortunately, the laptop I picked out (Acer Predator Helios 300) has had some very bad thermal issues, and has caused me to return it entirely. For this reason, I am looking to get a new laptop for some gaming while at college and was hoping you might help me out! :)
$2000 and United States
Best specs for the money, the other two don't really matter to me. A detachable battery would be nice, though.
Not important at all.
Windows (unless Ubuntu has come a long way with Wine)
N/A
Gaming, such as Overwatch, Destiny 2, Borderlands 2, etc.
Destiny 2/Overwatch mainly. I would like to get high/ultra setting at ~120 FPS or max settings on a higher resolution at around 60 FPS
I would like something that has a SSD for boot and a hard drive for mass storage of games/movies/etc. If the hard drive could be upgraded it would be be great. I would personally like ~3-4 TB.
I have a PC I built with a GTX 1080 TI and was interested in using an eGPU with my laptop. I was wondering if it might be cheaper/more efficient to use it with an eGPU and get a laptop that doesn't have discrete graphics. Were this the case, I would have to get a computer with Thunderbolt 3, though. What do you think? The eGPU case I was thinking about getting is listed below, with the list of compatible computers: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/egfx-breakaway-box.html The problem I was seeing is that even after looking through most all of the ones listed there, I couldn't find any that had both a SSD and HDD. Thanks for all the help! Edit: just realized I forgot to put budget and country in the post. Sorry! Is there a way to edit the title? [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:36 AM PST Hi Guys! So I basically need some help here, my friend ended up getting a few deals for me on Black Friday (he picked up 2 laptops), one of which I can get, I am having a hard time picking between the two. (I obviously have to pay him back, so I want to know the better deal) The first laptop is this: It costs around $700 * 1.13 = $791 (with tax) Major things it has are:
Now the other one my friend bought from the US for around $530 converted. Main Specs are:
I am having a hard time choosing between these two, HP one seems cheaper and seems to have better specs, but the Acer one has a bit better quality (but a bit rough on the specs). Which one would you choose? Which deal is better? Thank you. [link] [comments]
New here, need advice with SSDs Posted: 14 Jan 2018 02:31 PM PST Hi all, I'm new here and I apologize if my post doesn't follow a specific rule, but I recently purchased a new gaming laptop (Lenovo Y700 14 inch) and was told that I could upgrade it with an SSD. I do not know much about SSDs other than that they confer significant enhancements to a PC/Laptop's performance, and was wondering how I could go about picking one that was perfect for my machine. So far I have heard about the Samsung 850 EVO, but I am confused by a lot of the terms like m.2 and what not. Would really appreciate any insight! [link] [comments]
Irregular power supply in my laptop Posted: 14 Jan 2018 02:06 PM PST While i am trying to boot my laptop i can observe that power supply is available for only 5 to 7 seconds and the it gets off for 2 to 3 seconds and again power supply is there for 5 to 7 seconds, this is happening in loop. I can observe the blue black screen and can hear the fan rotating too. Anyone have any idea what may be causing the issue ??? [link] [comments]

Lenovo Yoga 520 I7-8550u - surprisingly low Cinebench score Posted: 14 Jan 2018 12:46 PM PST Hi, Just bought the aformentioned laptop, after reading some reviews about different machines with this CPU, i understood that each laptop will give a slightly different performance due to different tuning by the laptop manufacturer, but Iv'e never imagined there can be such a margin. I ran Cinebench R15, and the best I got was 399 at multicore, and 98 with a single core, which looks extremely low to me. The reviews Iv'e read had laptops with the same processor tested getting scores in the range of 530-580 for multi, which is considrably higher than mine - more than that, even laptops with th i5-8250u are getting much better results than mine with a i7-8550u! I'm very disappointed and not sure what to do about it, and if It's a defect or It's just the way it is. At first I thought that's because of thermal limitations of the thin structure of this model, but from the same manufacturer, a lighter and thinner model (Ideapad 320s), with the i5-8250u, is getting a mariginally better score (multi) of 516. Here is some info about my configuration, I would love to hear some insight from you guys: http://i63.tinypic.com/9zqcmr.jpg Thank you fo your help [link] [comments]
Laptop shuts down whilst booting ASUS ROG G751JL Posted: 14 Jan 2018 12:27 PM PST Hey guys, I just flashed the BIOS of my G751jl with an unlocked version, and now when I press the power button, the laptop turns on, keyboard lights up and the fans are on as well. The screen is completely off though even when the laptop boots. Also after it boots for about 10 seconds it turns off again. Kinda panicking here, any suggestions on what to do? SPECS: CPU: Intel I7 - 4720hq GPU: Nvidia gtx 965m RAM: 12gb@1600mhz Boot drive: sata ssd 128gb Mass storage: 1 TB 5200rpm drive [link] [comments]
Laptop Turns off when slightly moved Posted: 14 Jan 2018 12:04 PM PST I have a pretty old ASUS laptop that I've been using without a battery for a couple months so it's always plugged into a charger. Beginning a few days ago I haven't been able to turn on the laptop without finagling with the position of the tip of the charger first, and when the laptop is actually on, if I move it even slightly it will shut off. The charger is relatively new and the power light never shuts off, so the problem is probably the computer itself and I'm wondering if spending $60 on a battery is worth it (will it still stop charging if I move the laptop?), or is this type of problem indicative that it's time to get a new laptop? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 10:42 AM PST I'm in the market for a new computer, my current MacBook Pro is over 5 years old. I'm planning on doing more photo editing and work in Unity3D this year so I want something that can handle that and is more or less future proof for the next few years. Right now the Surface Book 2 is at the top of my list. I'm curious to hear thoughts from those who have it today - what are you using it for primarily, and do you feel it was worth the cost? (Specifically, I'm considering the 13.5", i7, 16gb RAM, 512gb version) [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:32 AM PST Recently I have purchased an Acer Nitro 5 Spin (model NP515-51-56DL), and while I'm waiting for it to arrive I wanted to buy the compatible stylus for its touchscreen. My own research on what stylus is compatible hasn't yielded a straight answer however. Acer's UK store lists the Active Stylus (NP.STY1A.009) as compatible with the NP-515-51 model, but in other country page's this is not the case (in fact, nothing shows my laptop model as working with any of the listed styluses). I contacted Acer's Customer Support to get clarification, but was told that the only stylus that would work was "PEN ACTIVE STYLUS WALTOP ASA630 NC.23811.040" (a direct copy-paste from the conversation). Looking up the model number online shows almost no information on the pen except for websites in Europe selling it. All I can assume at this point is that the UK store's listing is correct, as the model number (NP.STY1A.009) on the US store names the product "Acer Active Stylus ASA630". No compatibility listing for the Nitro 5 Spin, but the inclusion of ASA630 suggests that it should be similar (however the product images don't match exactly). I'd like to find out for sure which stylus is compatible, given the lack of consistency and little information on the Nitro 5 Spin's stylus support. [link] [comments]

What are some good options for a budget laptop for programing and everyday use? Posted: 13 Jan 2018 07:34 PM PST Hey everyone I'm looking for a laptop that's for programing and everyday use I'm currently on a budget of around $200 or close to that price maybe a bit above it, so I can't really go above and beyond, but I'm going to be a college student soon (this Fall of 2018) so any ideas on a good laptop for me, and when I upgrade what should I be aiming for specs wise? Gigabyte Aero 14 and Slow C4d Viewport Posted: 13 Jan 2018 05:19 PM PST I recently purchased a Gigabyte Aero 14 with i7-7700HQ Intel Core Processor 2.80GHz, 16GB Installed Ram, with Windows 10. It was suggested that I do a clean reinstallation of Windows, but I didn't because I didn't want to remove all the programs that initially came with the laptop. I am running Cinema 4D Studio version RC19. The performance is pretty laggy, the Viewport only matches my navigational movements after a second or two and always very choppy. When I am playing an animation that I keyframed my objects become cubes and load frame by frame one second at a time. What can I do to solve this slow performance? I disabled OpenGL but didn't notice a difference. Is there anything I can change in C4D Preferences, or should I do a complete reinstallation of Windows 10 as initially suggested? Thank you for all your help. [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2018 07:04 PM PST G'day, I've decided it's high time to update the 7yr old tombstone of a laptop to something more usable in this day and age. Being somewhat of a tech noob I'm hoping for some advice or suggestions. My wants/needs are pretty simple. About a 14 inch (+/- 1") screen w/decent resolution. (Anything will be an upgrade from the current unit.) No touch screen. Long battery life. 8hrs plus if possible. A bit future proof. Don't want something that will be junk in 2years if I can help it. Usage is very basic. Web browsing with multiple tabs at once. (10-20 at a time), YouTube, emails and word/excell work. No photo/video editing, gaming etc. Budget of $1000 AUD. The Acer swift 3 has come up on my radar, but I keep hearing the screen in a bit average? Zenbook UX330A. This looks great, not sure if it will blow the budget or there is a better option out there perhaps? Any input welcome. Cheers. [link] [comments]

Dell E6420 Good for graphic and game design? Posted: 13 Jan 2018 06:11 PM PST Hello, I am looking at a second-hand laptop for school (graphic and game design) I found a good deal on a Dell Latitude E6420 with: Intel Core i7-2760QM @2.4GHz 8GB Ram 64-bit operating system Intel HD Graphics 3000 and Nvidia NVS 4200M I would like to know how this may compare to today's i7 laptops and if the graphics are enough to meet my needs. I need to run the Adobe Suite such as Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, and AfterEffects. I'm not sure what we'll be using for game design but if it can run the Unity and Unreal engines fine that should work. Any information on this would help. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
